Scouting The Musketeers
Despite a bevy of returning veterans, Sioux City hasn’t gotten off to the
start they envisioned, dropping their first two regular season contests to
Fargo and Dubuque. Since leading returning scorer and captain Trevor
Olson has been out with an injury, it has been up to forwards Jared
Thomas, Kyle Schmidt, Jake Montgomery and Nikolas Olsson to produce
offense. Thomas and newcomer Brandon Hawkins have the only two goals
for the Muskies. An experienced defensive core includes Ryan Mantha,
Blake Heinrich, and Neal Pionk, while the goaltending duo of Kyle Hayton
and Connor Girard includes over 70 games of USHL experience. The Storm
and Musketeers split their eight contests last season, each team winning
four games. Friday night will be the first of six meetings between the two
during the 2013-14 campaign.
Johansson Shines In Opening Night Win
Swedish goaltender Jacob Johansson didn’t disappoint in his first game
for the Tri-City Storm, making 37 saves and coming up big late in the
contest, a 2-1 shootout win at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday
night. Newcomers Robbie Payne and Chris Wilkie scored for the Storm
in the shootout, sending the Kearney fans home happy with a win in
their first game of the season. Chase Berger also tallied his first USHL
goal in the second period, which tied the game and served as the first
Storm goal of the 2013-14 season.

TRI-CITY STORM HOCKEY
STORM IN BRIEF
Season Opening Homestand
The Storm begin their season with six of their first seven contests
at the friendly confines of the Viaero Event Center. The homestand
will keep the team in their own beds without any overnight travel
until the end of October. After defeating Lincoln at home on
opening night, the Storm have just one road game at Des Moines
on Oct. 5 before a four-game stretch in Kearney where they’ll face
Iowa foes Sioux City, Waterloo, Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. After
the lone road game in Des Moines, Tri-City will not leave the state
of Nebraska until Nov. 2 when they head to Sioux City.

Welcome To Good Berger
Storm forward Chase Berger scored the first goal of the regular
season for Tri-City in their win over Lincoln last Saturday night.
The tally, which was his first career USHL goal, tied the game in the
second period and gave the Storm momentum. The Penn State
commit excelled last season with St. Louis AAA, scoring 33 goals and
adding 28 assists in 36 games. A St. Louis native, Berger centered a
line with other first-year forwards Dan Labosky and Chris Wilkie that
worked well together during the victory.
Starting With Success
After a win over Lincoln in their season opener Saturday night, TriCity has now gone 5-0-1 in their last six home openers. Storm head
coach Josh Hauge is 2-0 in his first game of the season at home
in his head coaching career in Tri-City, defeating Sioux City 4-3 in
last year’s home opener. The Storm finished with a 13-17-2 record
in front of their fans at the Viaero Event Center last season. For the
second consecutive year, Tri-City had an attendance of over 3,000 on
opening night.
Wilkie Makes It Count
Known around town as the first Nebraska native to wear a Storm
sweater, Omaha ‘s Chris Wilkie didn’t disappoint in his first game
in Kearney. He registered three shots on goal and gelled with his
linemates before converting on a shootout attempt that helped
secure a victory for Tri-City. Wilkie was the second Storm shooter to
beat Lincoln netminder Michael Bitzer in the shootout before TriCity goalie Jacob Johansson stopped Magnus Hoff in the third round
to clinch the win.
Suspensions Served
The weekend’s games will mark the return for two Storm veterans
who were missing during Tri-City’s opening night victory. Forward
Ryan McMurphy and defenseman Nolan Gluchowski were
suspended three games apiece for their role in a penalty-filled
preseason contest with Des Moines last month. Both returners
should play a large role for the Storm this season. Gluchowski is the
leading returning scorer among the defensive corps, after potting
8 goals and assisting on 11 others last season. McMurphy eats up
minutes on the penalty kill while using his speed to help on the TriCity forecheck.

TRI-CITY STORM COACHING STAFF
Head Coach: Josh Hauge
Josh Hauge is entering his second full season as head coach of the Storm. After taking over the duties midway through the 2011-12 season, Hauge led Tri-City on a lateseason run to the USHL Playoffs.
Before the Storm, Hauge, 34, was the head coach of the Alaska Ice Dogs (NAHL) for
three seasons, compiling a regular-season record of 111-49-15 and a postseason
record of 20-9-0. He spent a total of six seasons in Alaska, and won the Robertson
Cup with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in 2011. Hauge was promoted on December 7, 2011,
becoming the sixth General Manager and Head Coach of the Storm.
A native of Rosemount, Minn., Hauge began his coaching career as the head coach
of the Twin Cities Northern Lights (MJHL) in 2002-03. In his only season behind the
bench, Hauge won the league championship. He then coached the Dubuque Thunderbirds for two seasons.
Overall, he comprised a regular-season record of 93-27-7 in three seasons coaching in the Tier III – MNJHL.
In seven seasons as a head coach in junior hockey, he has coached teams to one national championship, two
national championship runner-ups, two regular season titles and four divisional championships.
Assistant Coach: JB Bittner
Assistant Coach: Erik Largen
JB Bittner joins the Storm coaching staff
for his first year in 2013-14.
Erik Largen joins the Storm coaching

The 26-year old was a goaltender for
his hometown team, the University of
Alaska-Fairbanks before beginning his coaching career as an assistant to Hauge with the Fairbanks Ice

Before the Stingrays, Bittner spent three seasons as an
assistant coach and video coordinator with his alma

2003-04 Anderson Cup Champions
The 2013-14 Tri-City Storm season marks the 14th year of
hockey in the heartland. Since the Storm kicked off its inaugural season in 2000 there has been plenty of drama and excitement. But the 2003-04 season will forever be remembered in
Kearney.
In just their fourth season, the Storm had the perfect mix of
skill and toughness to delight their fans with 43 wins, a franchise record.
Tri-City racked up 91 total points and brought home the Anderson Cup, the trophy awarded to the USHL franchise with
the most points during the regular season. The Storm also
recieved recognition as the USHL Organization of the Year for
the second time in their history.
It was just the first full season for Head Coach Bliss Littler, who
had taken the reigns midway through the 2002-03 season. Littler remained in control of the coaching duties
until the end of the 2007-08 season.
Five players from the Anderson Cup winning team went on to play professionally in the National Hockey
League including Bill Thomas, Steve Wagner, Jack Hillen, Peter Mannino and Christian Hanson. Hillen is still
active in the NHL and represented the Washington Capitals in the 2013 NHL Playoffs. Hanson signed a twoway contract with the St. Louis Blues in advance of the 2013-14 season and is steps away from returning to
the NHL, starting the season with the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League.
All throughout the 2013-14 season the Storm will be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their success in
2003-04, culminating in Anderson Cup Tribute Night against the Lincoln Stars on April 5.
