President’s MEssage
W
elcome to the 2009 CSC Awards Gala, our annual tribute to the
outstanding achievements of our members and their peers. The
talents of Canadian cinematographers continue to place them
among the finest in the world. Despite the vagaries of a rough economic
downturn around the globe, cameras rolled on Canadian features such as
Passchendaele and immensely popular home-grown television productions like
Corner Gas, Little Mosque on the Prairie, The Guard, The Border, Degrassi: The Next
Generation, Flashpoint, Being Erica and many more.
All but one of the above shows are shot by CSC members. The exception
is Being Erica, but I mention this bold and distinctive program because it
demonstrates the CSC’s new policy of inviting member and non-member
cinematographers residing in Canada and Canadian cinematographers living
outside the country to participate in the awards competition. A committee of
prominent Canadian cinematographers decided to amend the regulations
governing the Society’s annual awards. This is the first time in its 50-year
history that the CSC is including cinematographers outside of the membership
in all categories.
“We want to make sure that the works of all cinematographers in this
country have the opportunity to compete in the CSC Awards,” said committee
member Albert Dunk, csc, asc. “We want the best competing with the best.
No exclusions.” Student and News categories were already open to nonmembers.
Over this past year, a global economic crisis has spread to Canada, reducing
vital financial resources for our film and television industry, and the CSC, like
many other players in the business, has had to tighten its belt. However, the
show must go on, and the Society is not curtailing its efforts to find, revise and
renew activities that support our members. We are continuing our popular
lighting workshops and planning a 2009/2010 (season 2) schedule of screenings of current films, with lectures by the directors of photography who shot
them. We are also looking at closer collaboration with the Directors’ Guild of
Canada and the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. Our magazine,
under Editor Wyndham Wise, has undergone a transformation of style, format
and even its name has been changed to Canadian Cinematographer from CSC
News. Wyndham, working closely with Editor Emeritus Don Angus, has several
other ideas for upgrading the publication and widening its distribution. Canadian
Cinematographer harks back to an earlier CSC magazine of the same name, and
the executive felt it better described the readership focus than CSC News.

The CSC has never strayed from its
original objective, “to promote and
foster the art of cinematography in
Canada,” and that’s why we are here
tonight, presenting awards to the
best of the best.We did not, however,
get here by luck, and every year we
take great pride in presenting special awards to men and women who
have gone that extra mile to make
the CSC and the industry in general
stronger and brighter.
We are here tonight to honour the
gifted practitioners of our craft, and
there are many people to thank for the
continuing success of this special event.
That success is directed by a working
executive with whom I am proud to be
associated. My thanks to all for another great year, with special thanks to
Susan Saranchuk for staging this wonderful show. We are grateful for the time
and expertise of the awards juries, co-chaired so ably by Robert Bocking csc
and John Hodgson in Toronto. A huge thanks, too, to our corporate sponsors
whose generosity makes this festive occasion possible. And last but not least,
congratulations to this year’s nominees.

THE BILL HILSON AWARD
Frieder Hochheim
Oscar®-winning Frieder Hochheim, a native of Winnipeg who became a Toronto
gaffer, invented a portable lighting system which has revolutionized lighting in
the motion picture industry. He called his flicker-free, colour-correct fluorescent lighting system Kino Flo, which since 1987 is considered the standard of the
industry. In 1995, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences honoured
Hochheim and his team with an Academy Award® for Technical Achievement.

THE PRESIDENT’S AWARD
Nikos Evdemon csc
For Nikos Evdemon csc, entertainment has been part of his soul since his
childhood in northern Greece. He discovered early that acting was not for
him and he turned his creative eye to the art of cinematography. His work has
graced Canadian film and television for nearly 40 years, including a remarkable
28-year career with the CBC. An abundance of awards has followed, including two CSC Awards and four Geminis. In recent years, he has volunteered
his considerable computer and web-building skills to the CSC, beautifully
redesigning the look and functionality of the Society web site www.csc.ca.
The CSC is proud to present the inaugural President’s Award to Nikos.

THE KODAK NEW CENTURY AWARD
Pierre Letarte csc
Pierre Letarte csc grew up in Montreal where his early interest in film was
sparked by movies screened in church basements. He joined the National Film
Board in 1965 and through the 1970s shot documentaries with directors like
Denys Arcand, Gilles Carle and Paul Cowan, whose Going the Distance received
an Oscar® nomination for feature documentary in 1979. Jean Beaudin’s feature,
J.A. Martin, photographe, was a winner at Cannes and Letarte lensed the controversial NFB film Not a Love Story: A Film about Pornography (1981), directed by
Bonnie Sheer Klein. Perhaps his most famous film, John N. Smith’s The Boys of St.
Vincent, was shot in 1990. Letarte and Smith left the Film Board after The Boys
and the film became their calling card in Hollywood. It led Letarte and Smith
to make Dangerous Minds starring Michelle Pfeiffer in 1995, Sugartime (1995)
with Mary-Louise Parker and Jane Austen’s Mafia! (1998) with Lloyd Bridges.
Back home, the pair made the Canadian television miniseries Random Passage
(2002), Prairie Giant (2006) and The Englishman’s Boy (2008). Letarte won the
Gemini Award for best cinematography for Random Passage and was nominated
for the other two. His most recent film with Smith, Love & Savagery, is in postproduction.

THE ROY TASH AWARD
The Roy Tash News Film Award is presented for outstanding cinematography
in television news by a Canadian cameraperson. The trophy is named for
veteran news cameraman Roy Tash csc, who spent more than 50 years
shooting news events across Canada and throughout the world. The award
features one of Roy’s cameras, a 35mm Bell and Howell Eyemo, which has been
gold-plated. With great pride, Roy personally presented this award until his
death in 1988 at the age of 90.

THE STAN CLINTON AWARD
The Stan Clinton Award is presented for best news essay where cinematographic distinction is the prime consideration. The award is presented in
memory of the late Stan Clinton csc. Stan was the first contract cameraperson
at the CBC. He devoted his life not only to filming superb pictures, but also to
teaching new cameramen. This award will long commemorate Stan’s insistence
on excellence even under the pressures of news photography.

THE BILL HILSON AWARD
The Bill Hilson Award is named after the man who generated and regulated
the procedures for film quality control in the early days of CBC Television. This

We are here tonight to honour the best in cinematography. This annual
celebration is the highlight of the CSC year. It has become an industry tradition
which recognizes not only the art and expertise of cinematographers, but also
their essential role in the collaborative process of filmmaking.
The Awards Committee is proud to announce the addition of a new category,
Lifestyle/Reality Cinematography, and the reinstatement of Corporate/Educational Cinematography. The addition of Educational Cinematography to this
category provides a broader perspective of the fields of visual skills which we
have in the past called “Corporate,” “Unique” or “Industrial.”
