Winter Training by Dave King
For most of us the river paddling season is over. There may be a few hearty souls who will
brave freezing temperatures to paddle or the few lucky ones who will have the opportunity to
find warmer waters; for the rest of us there are swimming pools and dreams.
I’m sure we all want to be as ready as possible for the first opportunities to paddle next
year. So for those who want to be as fit and ready as possible I have the following ideas.

First, when it comes to sports I consider there to be five measures of fitness; strength,
endurance, balance, flexibility and skill. To be ready for next year it would be good to pay
attention to training in all five areas.
Strength does not necessarily mean lifting weights. Those of you who have taken more advanced lessons have heard your instructors repeat the idea of using your trunk muscles for
paddling and for initiating play moves. Many of these same muscles can come into play in every
day life by providing trunk stability and ultimately protecting your back. In the pool, rolling
uses some of these muscles and multiple rolls can begin to strengthen many of these muscles.
I have also found initiation strokes and sweeps to be very useful in exercising the trunk.
Those of you who are spending time in the rock gym use many of these muscles keeping your
body close to the wall or especially while climbing anything inverted.
I’m afraid that in my opinion our sport is not very good for building endurance. Before you
burn my likeness in effigy think about how you paddle. Laze down the river to a play spot,
work very hard briefly on a wave and then sit in an eddy for a while until it’s your turn to play
again. Whitewater kayaking really does not provide aerobic training. But being aerobically fit
can aid you in recovery after exercise. The mitochondria you build in your muscles recharge
the metabolic pathways that recover your muscles for the next turn on the wave. Long paddles, bike riding, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and swimming are all great activities to
build endurance for next season.
Balance in a kayak is a bit different from what you may traditionally think of as balance. Having good edge control, learning to keep your weight over the boat and paddle in the water can
all assist you in remaining upright next season. Additionally, getting a better sense of what
your edges can do will help you develop play moves that use the water to move the boat as
opposed to you having to “muscle” everything. Sure I’ve seen lots of boaters push the water
hard to get a squirt but a good boater senses their edge and the current and uses the water
to lift their bow. I will gladly show folks some edging and balance drills during pool sessions.
Flexibility is key to avoiding injuries. Although you don’t need to be a contortionist to get a
roll or initiate play strokes, having a lack of motion can prove to be a hindrance on the water.
I see very few pool session boaters warming up and stretching before starting their rolls and
next to none doing so on the river. The trunk, the shoulders and the hips are the most important muscles to stretch but a total program can make you so much more comfortable and
safer in your boat and on the wave.
While it may be hard to develop some of the skill required for paddling in current and on
waves, there is a lot more to do in a pool than roll. Again edging drills and balance drills can
work on techniques to be applied next year. But perfecting your stroke, flat water stalls,
squirts and cartwheels can get you started on running rivers and playing more smoothly when
the water is warm again. After warming up with paddling several laps of the pool and then
stretching, I have a series of drills that I perform periodically throughout the pool session.
Over the course of the coming sessions I will be happy to share them.

Annual Meeting & Dinner 2004
The 2004 Annual Meeting and Dinner were well attended. Held again at the Saddle Brook, NJ Holiday Inn it was enjoyable
to see so many familiar faces. Club officers for 2005 were elected and the new bylaws ratified by the membership. Laura
Kirsch presented a detailed review of the new bylaws and the changes were discussed before the vote.
The Dinner was hosted by Gloria Silva, who presided over the many evening events: door prizes won by Rhonda O. Laura K.,
and Karen W. The LiquidLogic Kayak Raffle was Dan Roberto. Jack and Ellen Moskowitz continued the Challenge Grant and
raise over $1000 for Conservation to be matched. “Thanks to the many KCCNY members who donated to the conservation
drive at the meeting last night. With your contributions and our matching grant we will be sending over $2000 to NYRU
and AW. “
Special feature of the Dinner was Wayne Gulmantovicz’s action-packed video of members paddling difficult CL4-5 creeks.
Roger Gocking was our Goldstein Award winner. To our surprise and delight Pete Skinner (last year’s Goldstein winner)
showed up just as Ed Hanrahan was celebrating Roger’s many achievements and contributed. Roger was not able to attend
the event due to a prior engagement. Roger has served in many aspects of the club from refurbishing the slalom gates to
participating on various committees and is the current and newly elected Vice-Chairperson. Congratulations of this well
deserved award Roger!
The William Nealy Esopus Slalom artwork was displayed and the winner of the on-line auction with was Ed Hanrahan .
Very special thank you to our prize sponsors, who made the Annual Dinner so rewarding:

Keystone Canoeing Ed Gertler
The new (4th edition) of Keystone Canoeing is finally off the press. Though hidden behind the same ugly
cover (picture of Charlie Walbridge paddling the only flatwater he has done in the last 20 years), everything
in between has been updated, from the introduction to the maps to the text. It hopefully documents all the
current road names, dams removed and dams built, new accesses and accesses lost, new roads and bridges,
roads and bridges abandoned, gauges added and gone, and so on. It interprets many of the new gauges available
online and reinterprets old recommendations. There are even a few new creeks described. I think it will again
be
a
guidebook
that
you
can
depend
on.
Hope
you
like
it.

Any time of the year is the right time to consider making a tax-deductible contribution to KCCNY. Your gift will be
used for our educational and community service programs.
The club’s 501 (c) 3 status allows donations to be fully tax-deductible from your federal income taxes, for the year
in which they are made.
Send checks payable to KCCNY to our Treasurer - Robin Shultz , 39 Wenonah Avenue, Lake Hiawatha, NJ 07034

Join the Delaware River Greenway Partnership for a PUBLIC open house / DISCUSSION
on the DELAWARE RIVER WATER TRAIL PROJECT
The DRGP invites boaters and other recreational users of the Lower Delaware River, and interested members of the public, to participate
in an open house and discussion of the Delaware River Water Trail project. The open house will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, followed by
a presentation and discussion from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Thursday, January 6, 2005 6:30 ~ 9:00 PM.
Bowman’s Hill Wildlife Preserve Rt. 32 River Road ~ New Hope, PA. For directions: http://www.bhwp.org/visiting/location
If you miss this event, there will be an additional opportunity to participate in a public open house and discussion. The time and format will
be the same for both events. Wednesday, January 12, 2005 Shohola Township Municipal Building. 159 Twin Lakes Road Shohola, PA
The purpose of the Delaware River Water Trail project is to provide recreational users with the tools to more easily plan and enjoy safe,
environmentally responsible day and overnight trips on the river. These tools include a cohesive system of signage, recreational river
maps, a trail guide, and an interactive website.
The key to developing a successful Delaware River Water Trail is to consider the nature of the waterway and needs of its users, managers, and nearby residents. The DRGP and its project partners need help to make the water trail for this much-loved river a reality.
If you are interested in enhancing the livability of your community, addressing recreational and wellness needs, and contributing to the
economic well-being of the region, then you don’t want to miss this meeting!
For more information about the trail project and to RSVP for the public open house / discussion, please contact: John Brunner, DRGP

Jim Bellias Delegate. Morris Plains, NJ. Perception Blaze,. WW 2 years, Flat-water 5 years, Mongaup in October, Married with 3
kids (23, 25,27), enjoy road and mountain biking, snowboarding and skiing. Goals: To help anyway I can, let me know; and to get
more people interested kayaking!
Lauren Cook Conservation Chair. Philadelphia, PA, Pyranha Inazone 232 (mostly), Perception 3D (rarely), Perception Sparky (never,
but it's useful for taking newbies down easy rivers), paddling 2.5 yrs. Last river you ran: Mongaup . Additional info: Will paddle for
food and beer. Goals: continue to support education on conservation and access issues within the club, and education by the club in
the larger world of ideas and regulations.
Connie Farley, Newsletter Editor, East Hanover, NJ, InaZone 222 and recently purchased a very used but never paddled creek
boat—Perception Java, Paddling for 3 years. Tarrifville, CT. Goals: to keep us informed via this publication, and keep us intouch by contacting all listed members and asking “what’s up?”, and to maintain an newsletter online.
Wayne Gulmantovicz Safety Chair. Piscataway, NJ. Big EZ up to class 4. Class 4+, and/or winter paddling I use my Micro 240
creeker. Running rivers for 2.5 years. Last river: Southern river trip early November, Little River Canyon in Alabama (CL5), Tallulah Georgia (5) and Tellico, Tenn (4). Favorite Rivers: Little River Canyon AL, Tallulah GA, Russell Fork VA 450 CFS. Favorite
Local Creek: Tohickon, Beerkill, NY. Favorite Creek period: Hands down the Tellico Tenn. Goals: Over the past 18 months I've
hit 35 new class 4-5 rivers and creeks. I'm interested in running a paddling hazards class. It will focus on swimming with style,
swimming with your boat, how not to screw up your own rescue, boat to boat safety, retrieving boats and paddles, where you run the line in
risking your own personal safety, safety vests, and freeing a pinned boat several ways. Looking to offer in Summer 2005 for
Mongaupers and advanced paddlers.
Ellen Moskowitz Delegate. Flanders NJ. Pyrhanas. How long paddling: 6 years. Last river you ran: Ocoee Married to a paddler
equally addicted to the sport. ACA certified instructor and loves to teach people the sport.
Robin Schulz Treasurer. Lake Hiawatha, NJ....No Lake to be found :( ...... Infared, Dagger. 4 years. Lehigh River. My favorite
river is the Mongaup. I enjoy all outdoor adventures/travels. I'm currently reading the book, “The Seat of the Soul”. I dislike
cooking but that's soon to change. (It's more like being lazy to cook). My plan is to create a new habit; live healthier. I intend
to assist the club in regards to all monetary/budget activities. I also plan on assisting/teaching new paddlers and having lots of
fun with everyone. See you at the pool sessions!
Ken Voytac Chairperson. Denville., NJ. InaZone 230, Prijon Athlete, Dagger King Pin. paddling: 10 years this spring. New River,
West Va. Dislike cliques, overburdensome rules, taxation without representation, "private" paddling trips. Favorite river; The
New at 13.5 feet. Lost 6 pounds since early November..swimming every day.
Goals for KCCNY...Keep It Simple Sam. Try to
get everyone to.....just paddle! Continue to bring new folks into the sport.
Pierre de Rham Membership. Garrison, NY. Paddle a Crossfire. Started paddling in 1983. Last river paddled was the Delaware.

David King Annual Race Chair, & Competition Chair. Wharton, NJ. Inazone, Sub 7. 9 years. Last river you ran: Mongaup. I
hope to return the Annual Esopus Race to a place of prominence among racers and as a major social event for the club. I believe
competition hones one's skills and hope to use it to help fellow paddler's improve in all areas of boating skills while having fun. In
2005 I hope to launch an annual squirt competition for all levels in the club.
Dan Kirsch Delegate. Hackensack, NJ. Liquid Logic L’il Joe, Dagger RPM, Paddling 4 years . Farmington (New Boston), Mongaup.
Additional info: Married, and starting to involve grandchildren in paddling activities. Looking forward to taking formal instruction and moving up a level in my paddling (although I’m afraid that just means I’ll be swimming in a higher class of rivers). Also: to
develop interest in slalom at the club level using our regular boats, and expanding the activities offered at the pool sessions.
