Our Mission Statement
Holy Spirit is a community of believers that aspires to be formed by the
values of the Gospel and finds its strength in coming together to celebrate
Eucharist and to be transformed into the Body of Christ. As a Eucharistic
People, we who are being nourished must share the bread we have with
others, wash the feet of our brothers and sisters and welcome all who
come, as Christ Himself.

Pastor’s Notes
Mary, Undoer of
Knots
“Eve, by her
disobedience, tied the knot of
disgrace for the human race;
whereas Mary, by her
obedience, undid it. What the
virgin Eve bound fast through
unbelief, the Virgin Mary set
free through faith.” (From a
reflection by St. Irenaeus,
Bishop of Lyon, 2nd century)
This is one of the earliest
examples of calling Mary the “New Eve.”
Inspired by this meditation, artist Johann
Georg Schmittdner (c. 1700) created the painting
shown above, depicting the mission granted to the
Virgin Mary by her Son, Jesus. It hangs in the
Church of St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany where hundreds of thousands visit
yearly to pray. Mary is shown with two angels assisting her in untangling and smoothing knots, under
the guidance of the Holy Spirit. She stands crushing
the head of a serpent, the diabolical creator of
knots.
In 1986 Pope Francis – then Father Jorge
Mario Bergoglio – while in Germany studying for his
doctorate, saw the painting. He was intrigued by its
beauty and the story behind it. Upon his return to
South America, he introduced the devotion to Mary
Undoer of Knots in Argentina where it became very
popular, and soon spread to Brazil. As a cardinal, he
had the image engraved on a chalice that he gave
to Pope Benedict XVI.
We all have “knots” in our lives – problems
and struggles we face that keep us from having
peace in our complex lives. They may be such
things as illness, loneliness, unemployment, fears,
deep hurts, worries of all kinds. Pope Francis eloquently stated in one of his Angelus addresses:
“Mary...is the Mother who patiently and lovingly
brings us to God, so that he can untangle the knots
of our soul...” Let us turn to Our Blessed Mother,
Undoer of Knots, and ask for her intercession
through her Son, Jesus Christ.
Father Jorge wrote his own prayer to Our
Lady Undoer of Knots. It was subsequently made a
central part of a novena to Our Lady. You can
search the internet to access a full novena to Mary
Undoer of Knots, or you can use Pope Francis’
prayer reprinted in the box to the right as a standalone novena.

Prayer to Mary Undoer of Knots
Holy Mary, full of the presence of God,
during your life you accepted with great humility the
holy will of the Father and the legacy of your Son
our Lord Jesus Christ, and evil never dared to
entangle you with its confusion. Since then you
have interceded for all of our difficulties as you did
at the wedding feast of Cana. With all simplicity and
patience, you have given us an example of how to
untangle the knots in our complicated lives. By
being our mother forever, you arrange and make
clear the path that unites us to our Lord.
Holy Mary, Mother of God and ours, with
your maternal heart, untie the knots that upset our
lives. We ask you to receive into your hands (here
mention your petition) and deliver us from the
chains and confusion that restrain us.
Blessed Virgin Mary, through your grace,
your intercession, and by your example, deliver us
from evil and untie the knots that keep us from being united to God. So that free of all confusion and
error, we may find Him in all things, keep Him in our
hearts, and serve Him always in our brothers and
sisters. Mother of Good Counsel, pray for us. Amen.

33 Days to Morning Glory:
Consecration to Jesus
Through Mary
Join us Tuesday
afternoons, 1-2:30pm,
beginning February 18th
in the Martha Mary Room.
Groups are forming now for
Consecration on March 25th,
2014. In the evenings, we face
the same problem Mary did:
no room at the inn. I’m looking
for in home hosts. The group
will meet for 90 minutes, once
a week for six weeks. You can
do it on your own, with your family, or in a small group.
Small group weekly meetings involve sharing insights
and watching a 30-minute video by Fr. Michael Gaitley,
MIC, that helps bring individual reflections and group experience into a clear and live able focus.
If you are looking for a simple way to be spiritually renewed, develop a deeper relationship with Our Merciful
Savior, and grow in holiness, join us for 33 Days to Morning Glory. For information on participating in a retreat
group, email Anne Kinskey at this address [email protected]
If you have already made the Consecration, but have not
used the workbook or seen the videos, I encourage you
to prayerfully consider making the retreat again this Lent
in a small group and to invite your family and friends. I
am in need of evening hosts and small group leaders.

Light of the World
“You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel
basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all
in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your
heavenly Father.”
Matthew 5:14-16
Today’s Gospel is one of my favorites! In hearing these
words proclaimed at Mass, the Holy Spirit renews my
mission as a Baptized Catholic. Jesus’ words are so personal that the only way not to be struck by them is if you
aren’t listening! He says, “YOU are the light of the world.”
Not the person next to you, not your mother, not your coworker, not the priest, but YOU! Then Jesus goes on to
say, “Your light must shine before others, that they may
see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”
This isn’t a “if you feel like it” statement. Jesus gives us
our mission very clearly. Our very lives MUST show others the goodness of God!
It can be easy to become discouraged…I haven’t lived
my life this way so far or I don’t know how to be a light to
others. Do not let those temptations get the better of you.
Here’s the good news: Our light comes from Jesus. At
Baptism, we are given a candle that is lit from the Paschal candle and we are told, “Receive the light of Christ.”
We have the light of Christ within us, but that light needs
to be strengthened and rekindled. That is what frequent
reception of the Sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist do. Seek Jesus and His light will shine through
you to others. Remember this is not an option…This is a
MUST!

HOLY SPIRIT CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Mission Statement: To develop independent, life-long learners who can and will live for Christ.
Catholic Schools Week...highlights!
What an exciting week we’ve had at Holy Spirit as we celebrated Catholic Schools
Week! Our STUCO officers delivered treats to our police, fire, and emergency
room partners along with the Mayor and Oak Park-Carpenter School in thanksgiving
for all they do for us throughout the year. Fr. Scott and Sr. Teresa spoke to all
the children about their vocation and the discernment process of listening to God’s
will for our lives. Movies and popcorn were a special part of Tuesday along with the
challenge to add 40 additional prayer minutes for everyone throughout the week.
For our Parent Mass, every student prepared a prayer intention that was then
linked together and placed on the altar. Our basket (pictured left) was overflowing.
Students also made placements to be
shared with those in our community who receive Meals on Wheels and
Valentines for our seminarians and religious. Teachers received many
special treats in honor of all they do for our school each and every day.
They also looked quite sporty in their Catholic Schools Week vests
which were Christmas gifts this year. Finally, the 8th graders persevered and beat the teachers at the annual volleyball challenge Friday
afternoon! Thanks to everyone, especially HSPA, who helped make this
week extra special!
We are proud of our Science Olympiad Team!
Holy Spirit’s Science Olympiad team traveled to Kearney, MO, last weekend to compete among
24 other teams from around the Kansas City area. Laura M. and Abby M. placed 8th in Disease Detectives. Molly M. and Mary K. placed 7th in Heredity. Patrick F. and Brian D. placed
7th in Solar Systems. Abby M. and Annie T. placed 5th in Write-It...Do-It. Trevor M. and
