Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Statement from Bishop R. Daniel Conlon concerning the U.S. Supreme Court’s
decision on same-sex marriage:
The Supreme Court has decided that every state must make provision for same-sex marriage. This is a
legal decision. It is not a decision about morality or religious belief. Thus, it has no impact on what the Catholic
Church understands to be the mind of God about marriage, nor does it affect how the Church will teach and act
with regard to marriage.
Although the Church cannot accept the concept of two men or two women being married, we
nevertheless respect those persons who experience same-sex attraction. Like everyone else, they are children of
God whom Jesus came to lead to eternal life. Following Christ is a source of great joy; it is also, for all of His
disciples, a call to sacrifice.
Buildings and Properties Committee Update
2015-06-30 Bulletin Parking Lot Update:
The Building & Properties updates are being added to the Digital Signage Displays at the Church, Parish Offices,
and Education Center on a weekly basis covering Springboard, parking lot, and other facilities related projects. A page on
the St. Petronille website (www.stpetschurch.org) is under constructions to also provide project updates. A group of school
families organized an informational meeting on the parking lot on June 22. Thirty to forty school parents attended the
meeting along with members of the Parish Council, Building & Properties Committee and Fr. Jim. Issues discussed
included children drop off/pickup safety and benefits of the parking lot to St. Petronille previously communicated in the June
21 bulletin update.
Father Jim and members from the Building & Properties Committee and with a member of Parish Council met with
Village of Glen Ellyn Staff on Friday, June 26. Fr. Jim had informed the Village Staff that the parish and the Diocese want
to continue proposal discussions involving our parking lot should Opus formally submit an application for the
development. The Village Staff Members indicated that they expect Opus to present updated proposals some time in
July. During the Friday meeting, there was discussion of the Village and Opus tentatively meeting with the joint Parish
Council, Finance Committee and School Board late in July with a meeting open to all parishioners to be held at a later date.

Support
St. Petronille YM
Sept. 7, 2015
To develop leadership skills and a heart for justice and
compassion, to serve God and each other, and to work
together toward a common goal: This is the “mission” of
St. Petronille Youth Ministry. We “leave the building”
several times a year to serve people who have been affected by natural disasters, poverty or other hardships.
Our first trip this year will be to Detroit, MI to work with
older people whose homes were flooded. Following that
we will travel to Browning, MT to work in a small Catholic School on the struggling Blackfeet Reservation. As
funding for these trips becomes increasingly difficult we
turn to the community to support young people as they
build the foundation for a future focused on making the
world a better place.

Youth Ministry
St. Petronille Parish
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The LPAC (Local Partnerships in Adolescent Catechesis) group is currently looking at the Foundational
Elements of Adolescent Catechesis. Based on the survey data and comments from our youth, parents
and parish leaders we are discerning what effective practices our parish engages in and what gaps need to
be filled. The foundation of good catechesis for our youth includes strong partnerships between parents
and parish staff, a welcoming environment for our youth and their families, and a commitment of the
whole church to an intentional and innovative approach to exciting our young people about their faith.
While this all sounds good, we need to devise a plan for going forward that meets the needs of our teens
and their families and is doable for our parish.
The goal of Catholic Youth Ministry is to empower our young people to grow in spirituality and to take on the very difficult
task of living as disciples of Jesus in the world today. In order to achieve that, they need knowledge of the faith and
liturgical education, moral formation, a strong prayer life, and opportunities to experience their faith in action. While we feel
that in many ways our parish youth ministry does offer opportunities for this, we know need to do more!
Keep praying for us as we work through this long process and know that we will be keeping you informed along the way.
Would you like
to invest in the
faith life of St.
Petronille teens who are embarking on a pilgrimage to World
Youth Day Krakow, Poland in July of 2016?
Pope John
Paul II instituted this international event following the 1984
Year of Redemption. As he observed over 300,000 youth
from all around the world in St. Peter’s Square he said:
“What a fantastic spectacle is presented on this stage by
your gathering here today! Who claimed that today’s youth
has lost their sense of values? Is it really true that they
cannot be counted on?” It was at this gathering that the Holy
Father invested in the youth of the Catholic Church and
instituted what is now known as World Youth Day. The first
official World Youth Day took place in summer of 1986.
Crowding hundreds of thousands of youth together in one
place may terrify the average person, but to witness this
gathering is to witness joy, singing, dancing, young people
proudly holding their own flags high and exchanging
greetings and tokens. Every few years they come together
sharing one faith and learn to appreciate how very different
that looks in different cultures! St. Petronille has participated
in WYDs in Rome, Toronto, Cologne and Sydney and we are
looking forward to Poland!
So about investing:
 Pray for us as we prepare, that we grow in love and faith
during our pilgrimage.
 Support us financially by purchasing “Stock” in our
young people attending WYD or by participating in
fundraising events/opportunities we have.
 Follow us as we prepare and travel in July of 2016 via
Facebook and Instagram (to be set up this fall)
 Attend the “Stockholder’s” dinner where we will share
pictures and stories.

Pilgrims” contact Mary at: [email protected]

Please consider offering
your gifts and your voice
so that others may hear God speaking to them through the
Sacred Scriptures at Mass. Serving as a lector will help to
deepen your own relationship with the Lord, as you let his
word dwell in you. Lectors receive training, a lector's
handbook and an annual workbook with the weekend Mass
readings, commentary and tips for proclaiming with
understanding and clarity. We have a particular need for
lectors at our 11:30am and 5pm. Sunday Masses. To learn
more about the lector ministry or to schedule a time for
training, please contact Lisa Ayres at [email protected],
or 630-267-2428.
Being a lector has brought me closer to the Word, to
the Mass, and to the Lord. I am also glad that I am
setting an example for my family by stepping up to
serve.

Calling all St. Petronille School Alumni!
All School Alumni Group Meeting
Wednesday, July 22 at 7pm
Parish Life Center
Mary Foley, Diocesan expert consultant in all things
relating to alumni issues will be our featured speaker. We
will begin planning for a major All-School reunion in
September of 2016 to mark the 90th anniversary of our
school’s opening day. One of our main goals will be
reaching out to the thousands of St. Petronille alumni from
the past nine decades. Who do you know? Please join us
that evening to help get the ball rolling! Refreshments will
be served.
Jim Anderson, Director of Development
The SERRA CLUB OF DUPAGE, a national organization supporting vocations to the priesthood and religious life, invites you to
join them on Monday, July 20.The evening will begin at 6:00PM with Rosary and Mass in the Church. Dinner will follow in the Parish
Life Center.
Guest speaker at the dinner, Brother Alan Parham, FSC, will share his vocation story. As a young man, trying to decide his
future, Brother Alam tried many things including an acting career, teaching in Barranquillaa, Colunbia and working in an African
American parish in St Louis. There, Brother Alan began to be concerned about the struggles of young people and began to believe that
Catholic Schools were a more viable option for them than public schools. At the same time, he met the Christian Brothers and felt at
home each time he visited them, and because the Brothers were reaching out to minority teenagers and others, he decided to apply. That
was 25 years go, and he has never regretted joining them. Today, Brother Alan serves as Vocations Director for the Christian Brothers
