THE MESSENGER The Weekly Newsletter of the Mountain Home Church of Christ August 16, 2015 FROM FROMKEN’S KEN’SPEN PEN Eddie Cloer of Searcy, Arkansas, who is the editor of the commentary series Truth for Today, has recently announced the beginning of an online Bible study program called “Truth for Today World Mission School.” This program is designed to encourage church members to study the Bible in a systematic fashion. I have offered to serve as the “Dean” for the program here at College and North, and will be taking many of the classes myself for the purpose of seeing exactly what students are seeing online and being able to answer questions as they arise, as well as send positive feedback to the school on areas of improvement. Under the title “Through the Scriptures,” the courses will eventually cover every book of the Bible. When the school begins September 1, the following courses will be offered: THE NEW TESTAMENT COURSES—The Life of Christ, 1; The Life of Christ, 2; Matthew, 1; Matthew, 2; Mark; Luke, 1; Luke, 2; John, 1; John, 2; Acts, 1; Acts, 2; Romans, 1; Romans, 2; 1 Corinthians; 2 Corinthians; Galatians; Ephesians & Philippians; Colossians & Philemon; 1 & 2 Thessalonians; 1 & 2 Timothy & Titus; Hebrews; James; 1 & 2 Peter & Jude; 1, 2, & 3 John; Revelation 1;Revelation 2. THE OLD TESTAMENT COURSES—Genesis, 1; Genesis, 2; Exodus; Numbers; 1 & 2 Samuel; 1 & 2 Kings; Ezra, Nehemiah, & Esther; Job; Isaiah; Jeremiah, 1; Jeremiah, 2 & Lamentations; Ezekiel; Daniel; The Minor Prophets, 1; The Minor Prophets, 2;The Minor Prophets, 2. There will be a modest fee to cover the materials used in the course (the student will receive a copy of the Truth for Today Commentary that covers the book of the Bible he/she is studying), and the student will need to commit to setting aside some time each week to complete the assignments. However, that can be done on your own schedule. Since our Sunday morning auditorium class has focused on “How to Study the Bible,” the announcement of this opportunity is timely for those who have the desire to increase their knowledge of the Bible under a systematic method. SHEPHERD’S CORNER….David Pitchford Created in God’s Image “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him…” (Genesis1:27). Many have attempted to define this perplexing phrase. What is “the image of God,” and what does it mean that humanity was created in that image? Does it mean, as some have suggested, that we are similar in spiritual orientation? Or is it that, as others have proposed, we share the special image of God’s moral discretion? Or perhaps mankind bears the divine image in the sense that we have been given a place of authority and dominion over his creation? While each of the previous interpretations are reasonable, there is a deeper explanation of what God’s image is that easily supersedes all other attempts. As is often the case, we must only allow the inspired text to interpret itself. How does Scripture define the image of God in which man was created? Only one word is needed: Christ. “...Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). “He (Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” (Colossians1:15). “He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:2-3). “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16). The New Testament writers firmly believed that Jesus Christ was the definition of God’s image. Humanity was created in and through Christ. He is Creation’s beginning and end; our blueprint and our completion; our aim and our potential; our source and our destination; our start and our goal. He is the Alpha and Omega. “So God created man in Christ, in Christ he created him…” ...Are you bearing his image? Alan Pitchford Eastridge Messenger ARTICLES......ACTIVITIES..... A student sent this to me and asked me for my response. "Jesus was a radical, nonviolent, revolutionary who hung around with lepers, hookers and crooks, wasn't American and never spoke English; was anti-wealth, anti-death penalty, anti-public prayer (M 6:5); but was never anti-gay, never mentioned abortion or birth control, never called the poor lazy, never justified torture, never fought for tax cuts for the wealthiest Nazarenes, never asked a leper for a copay; and was a long-haired brown skinned homeless community-organizing middle eastern Jew." My response: "Really?" My longer response: Jesus fulfilled the law and NEVER broke it. His correct interpretation of a relationship with God and man was a radical departure from the status quo of superficially religious and self appointed experts. (These guys would have written about Him on FB too and not been able to back it up either. They called him a glutton and a wine bibber and accused Him of being demon possessed or using the power of Satan...they were wrong too.) When confronted with this kind of sham religion He cleared the temple using a whip. He visited the poor, the rich, the synagogue and the Samaritans. He spent time with liars, cheats, thieves, and prostitutes and CHANGED their lives. He did not become like them to fit in with them. He spoke Greek and Aramaic and when He quoted scripture He often used the modern speech translation of His times....so if He lived now he would also speak English in America. He said riches could be dangerous to our souls; but He did have rich associations if not friends. He saved a woman from the death penalty but yielded to it Himself. He told her to go her way and SIN no more. He read scripture in public and prayed in public but condemned public performance for the praise of men. He took a strong stance against immorality and taught plainly against lust and adultery. He said if you hurt a "little one" it would be better if you went swimming with a millstone tied around your neck. When He taught about bad stewards...people who didn't do their jobs with opportunities entrusted to them and ended up poor and unemployed they were called wicked and lazy. When He healed a group of lepers and only one returned to thank Him He was appreciative and seems to indicate that it would have been appropriate for the others to have done the same...not actually a copay but a payment of gratitude. In the parable of the unforgiving servant the man was delivered to the tormentors. (An approved ending for one without mercy). He paid HIS taxes. When He had dinner with a tax collector the man gave a rebate because he had been cheating. He lived at home until he started his personal ministry. He accepted appropriate hospitality (food, lodging) commiserate with the accepted customs of a traveling teacher. One of his disciples wrote that even nature itself teaches it is a shame for a man to have long hair...so I doubt he had it. It can't be proved. But this view is much more accurate than the Italian images of the Anglo Saxon Jesus. He did not organize the community, He called them to the Father and when His words offended people and they walked away He asked His closest friends, "Will you go away too?" He taught plainly that people who had sex without being rightfully married were guilty of adultery (no shame just truth). He didn't meet anybody's expectations except God's.
