In 2009, the world-wide economic crisis touched millions
of families in Kentucky. Many local families saw their jobs
eliminated, hours reduced, and benefits cut. Foreclosures
burdened our courts, left families homeless, and depressed
property values, while vacant and abandoned homes
blighted our neighborhoods. As financial pressures in the
home mounted, domestic violence became more common.
Seniors on fixed incomes could not keep pace with
household expenses. Families lost their health insurance
and found themselves deep in medical debt. Predatory
payday lenders kept many families, already subsisting on
the financial edge, trapped in a cycle of debt. A deepening
economic crisis revealed its human dimension.
For 89 years, the Legal Aid Society has offered a helping
hand to families caught in these crises of unfortunate
circumstance. This past year we worked with families who
never imagined they would need our help. They discovered
what so many former Legal Aid clients experienced: that
by reaching out to us, Legal Aid can help identify options,
negotiate solutions, and bring resolution to problems that
would shake most families’ economic stability. This annual

report chronicles our work with just three of those families in
2009. Thousands more also discovered the promise we make
every day to our donors and to our community of “pursuing
justice and restoring hope” for our most disadvantaged
neighbors.
To extend our work and strengthen the safety net that was so
severely strained by the economic crisis, we forged strategic
partnerships and launched innovative programs in 2009. Our
annual report recognizes those valuable partners who helped
us create lasting change. We also recognize our donors for
their support. In a year in which many could have reduced
charitable giving, our donors were guided by thoughtfulness
and compassion.
On behalf of the board and staff, we thank our many partners
and donors whose support allows us to continue and expand.

mission
The mission of the Legal Aid Society is to pursue justice
for people in poverty.
Founded in 1921, the Legal Aid Society is a public interest
law firm that provides free legal assistance to low-income
individuals in our community. Our clients seek to escape
domestic violence so they can rebuild their lives; they risk
losing their nursing home beds or medical benefits because of a strained Medicaid budget; they live in homeless shelters because of an insufficient supply of affordable
housing; or, they are threatened with losing their home
because of predatory lending practices that have targeted
the one asset they have worked a lifetime to earn.
The Legal Aid Society plays an essential role in our community and has done so for the last 89 years by making
sure the most vulnerable among us are protected by law.

family saved from eviction at the holidays
6
Job furloughs prompted by a depressed economy had ripple effects on
many family budgets last year. The plans “David” and his family made
for a simple Christmas celebration at their home unraveled when the
local factory where David worked announced it would be instituting an
involuntary furlough for its employees. The loss of David’s job income
during the furlough left the family unable to pay the rent. Served with
an eviction notice, David turned to Legal Aid for help.
Legal Aid’s Tenants-In-Crisis counselor worked with David to secure
emergency financial assistance from a local agency. Meanwhile, a Legal
Aid attorney negotiated with David’s landlord. David was able to apply
the emergency financial assistance toward the rent, and his landlord
agreed to dismiss the eviction and allow the family to stay in their home.
Legal Aid helped David and his family bridge the financial gap caused
by the furlough to avoid the eviction. Not only was David able to keep
his family in their home for Christmas, but after the
holidays David resumed his full-time employment
and was able to pay rent and other household
expenses.
former employee secures unemployment
benefits wrongfully denied
For over two years, “Mark” had been a conscientious employee.
Unfortunately, two unavoidable absences from work caused his employer to fire him. Mark tried to explain the circumstances but his
employer remained unconvinced, so Mark filed for unemployment
benefits.
When the employer challenged Mark’s entitlement to unemployment benefits, Mark sought help from Legal Aid. A Legal Aid attorney represented Mark at an administrative agency hearing and
explained the circumstances which contributed to Mark’s absences.
Mark had sustained injuries in an altercation outside the workplace
which required him to be hospitalized. The police then arrested
Mark, charging him with assault. Upon further investigation, however, the police acknowledged Mark was the victim and dismissed
the assault charge. The hearing officer agreed that Mark’s absences
from the job were beyond his control and did not amount to misconduct that would disqualify him from unemployment benefits.
With Legal Aid’s help, Mark was granted unemployment
benefits that helped him until he secured a job with another employer.

foreclosure threatens to take a home and a
lifetime of memories
“Edna” and her husband worked all their lives in anticipation of
retirement together. With their joint income, they purchased a
home and raised a family. However, when her husband died
unexpectedly, Edna, age 69, returned to work. When she was
subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer, she lost her job and
became unable to make the mortgage payments.
Edna came to Legal Aid with paperwork showing the foreclosure sale had already been ordered by the court, although no
date had been set. A Legal Aid attorney negotiated with an outof-town mortgage company and convinced them to offer Edna
a loan modification and another chance. Edna was offered a
new loan with affordable monthly payments.
Edna’s cancer spread to her vocal cords, preventing
her from working. With Legal Aid’s assistance, Edna
was able to obtain disability income. While her
disability application was pending, Edna received
financial assistance from a Legal Aid employees’
fund which applies employees’ personal donations
to help clients in special need.
Today, Edna receives monthly disability income
and is able to make her mortgage payments. She
lives in the home which she and her husband
worked a lifetime to attain and which holds special memories for Edna.

wyatt, tarrant & combs fellowship
The Legal Aid Society is grateful for the generous financial support and
donated services we receive from throughout the community to pursue
justice for our most disadvantaged neighbors. Without our partnerships
with state and local governments, United Way organizations, foundations and bar associations, the Legal Aid Society could not offer the
compassionate and essential services we provide. The legal community
has been particularly generous in its financial support of our mission.
In 2003, Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs made a commitment to Legal Aid
to underwrite the full salary and benefits of an attorney to assist
victims of domestic violence. To date, Wyatt Fellows have assisted over
550 Legal Aid clients. The Fellowship is in addition to Wyatt, Tarrant
& Combs’ annual charitable contribution to Legal Aid’s Justice for
All Campaign and demonstrates the firm’s ongoing commitment to
our mission.
“The Wyatt Fellowship allows me to serve in a position that empowers
clients whose safety and stability have been threatened. My experience in public service has afforded me the insight into the importance of Legal Aid’s work and how critical an advocate can be for
a person in poverty,” said Tracey Darbro, Legal Aid’s current Wyatt
Fellow.
sixth annual brush, bottle
and barrel of the bluegrass
Under the leadership of event co-chairs Deena Ombres and
Loren Prizant and committee chairs Laura Berger, Jamey Elliott, Corey Finn, Stevie Finn, Martha Hasselbacher, Wendy
Hyland, Laurie Mayer, Nora Fitzgerald Meldrum, Katie Raines,
Sara Veeneman and Erica Lee Williams, the Legal Aid Society’s
Sixth Annual Brush, Bottle and Barrel of the Bluegrass was an
evening of fun and a great success.
The event was a preview party for the Cherokee Triangle Art
Fair and offered tastings of Kentucky wine, bourbon, beer
and food from local restaurants. The 2009 event raised over
$45,000, an increase of 12 percent in funds raised from the
previous year.
Legal Aid is grateful for the broad community support for this
special event. More than 425 people attended the event, and
fourteen artists, five distilleries, six wineries, three breweries
and one liqueur participated. Forty-five volunteers from across
the community helped organize and staff the event.
We are especially grateful to our host, Louisville Collegiate
School, and the generosity of our event sponsors.
