Safeguarding
The Future
Mary & Ryan Schneider’s
story
For close to a decade, nationally recognized
Cryo-Cell Cord Blood Educator Mary Schneider
has been championing the benefits of storing
umbilical cord blood. But when she gave birth
to her son, Ryan 12 years ago, she had no idea
the turn her life would take.
Although Mary’s pregnancy and Ryan’s birth
were both completely normal, she began
to notice that Ryan was experiencing some
developmental challenges. Then, when Ryan
was just a year old, she received the diagnosis
that no parent ever wants to hear—he had a
mild to moderate case of cerebral palsy. It’s
not hard to imagine how this changed Mary’s
world. However, she had had the foresight to
store Ryan’s umbilical cord blood, and after
extensive research, Mary found that cord blood
could be used to treat cerebral palsy.
In fact, in 2005 when Ryan was 3, he became
the first child to receive his own cord blood at
Duke University, in what is now an ongoing
study for children with cerebral palsy that have
access to their own cord blood. Ryan was
cleared of all his symptoms shortly after his
transplant and is a happy, healthy, 12 year-old
today.
“A brighter future is ahead for Ryan because I
made the decision to bank his precious cord
blood stem cells. Now many other children
could also have the opportunity to live fuller
lives when their parents make the same wise
choice. Banking your child’s stem cells is the
best insurance.”

Regarding umbilical cord tissue, all private blood banks’ activities for New York State residents are limited to collection,
processing, and long-term storage of umbilical cord tissue stem cells. The possession of a New York State license for
such collection, processing and long-term storage does not indicate approval or endorsement of possible future uses
or future suitability of these cells. In order to preserve more types and quantity of umbilical cord stem cells and to
maximize possible future health options, Cryo-Cell’s umbilical cord tissue service provides expectant families with the
opportunity to cryogenically store their newborn’s umbilical cord tissue cells contained within substantially intact cord
tissue. Should umbilical cord tissue cells be considered for potential utilization in a future therapeutic application, further
laboratory processing may be necessary. ©2015 Cryo-Cell International, Inc. All rights reserved. COT0198_0515D

Why banking your baby’s cord
blood is important
The Cryo-Cell Difference
Founded in 1989, Cryo-Cell International was the
world’s first private cord blood bank to separate
and store stem cells in 1992. Today, over 500,000
parents from 87 countries have entrusted Cryo-Cell
International to help safeguard their families’ future
health. Cryo-Cell International is the world’s leading
cord blood bank for the following reasons:
Once considered medical waste, the umbilical
cord is now helping families safeguard their
future health. Cord blood is rich in hematopoietic
stem cells, the building blocks of our blood and
immune systems. Therapeutic uses for these cells
are increasing.

What Does Cord tissue

Cryo-Cell International also offers the storage
of umbilical cord tissue, which is rich in
mesenchymal stem cells. These cells give rise
to structural tissues such as bone, cartilage and
muscle and are currently being used in many
clinical trials.
•Cryo-Cell International’s $75,000 payment

best in the industry.

by stem cells has been increasing. The current
odds of undergoing any stem cell transplant by
age 70 is 1 in 2171.

•Compared to bone marrow, cord blood stem
cells are immunologically immature and less
prone to produce graft versus host disease,
have less risk of transmitting infection, are
more easily matched to a recipient, have a
potent graft versus tumor effect, and are more
readily available in a shorter time period.
