Connecting Artists & Communities
The Manitoba Arts Network is a non-profit organization that connects Manitobans with a
wide variety of arts and cultural programming. Representing over 35 member organizations
throughout the province, the Manitoba Arts Network is the hub of a vibrant community
including performing arts and visual arts presenters, artists, industry partners, and cultural
organizations.
Published annually in October and available in both print and electronic format, the
Network’s Artist Directory is an essential resource for arts and cultural programmers from
across Manitoba who look to it to fulfill a variety of needs ranging from booking musical
and theatrical performances to identifying artists available to teach workshops and specialty
programs.
Printed copies of the Artist Directory are provided to all member organizations attending
the Network’s annual Manitoba Showcase conference held each fall in a different Manitoba
community. An electronic version of the Artist Directory is also available for free download
from the Network’s website.

Elizabeth Shepherd is a singer/songwriter and pianist, combining elements
of jazz, pop, soul and urban rhythms. Her musical training was split
between the Salvation Army (where both parents were ministers), and the
Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada and Paris. She completed a degree
in jazz piano at McGill University in Montreal in 2004 where she currently
lives. With four critically acclaimed albums, Elizabeth Shepherd has created
a body of work that resonates with music fans the world over. Credited as
one of the young forces pushing the boundaries of jazz, Shepherd further
carves an artful, soulful and hip brand of music all her own with her
upcoming release, The Signal. Highlights include her collaborations with
celebrated guitarist Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock) which are sublime and
funky. Her trademark rhythmic groove is always at the core of her writing,
while her fluid, sensual, breathy voice is as compelling as ever. Comprised
of ten original songs, it is a seamlessly crafted audio journey that begs to
be revisited. This innovative and new project is the indelible work of an
artist in full flight.

Focused and enthralling, Find The Others takes chamber-pop arrangements,
delicate vocals, found sound and other quelling quirks and turns it all into
one of Canada’s most spellbinding live shows. The band isn’t afraid to get

“A potent, quietly mind-blowing

- Direct Current Music
Find The Others is the music project of composer, singer/songwriter,
and visual artist Andy Sheppard. The project began as an experiment
in combining visual elements with live music, but has grown into a
crowd-pleasing international touring act. Each piece is accompanied by
synchronized video, making for a unique and immersive concert experience.
“Tremendous”
Songs from Find The Others have been featured as theme and background

After generating impressive energy on his own, Andrew James O Brien
found the perfect accelerant to add to his musical fire in vocalist/
instrumentalist, Catherine Allan. Together, they are Fortunate Ones.
Catherine and Andrew’s earnest blend of acoustic folk/pop and roots
has been gaining them significant critical and popular praise. Bare-bones
arrangements and delicate, assured harmony allows for the intimate
musical conversations that have made their live shows so endearing and
memorable. They perform with the openheartedness of two people that
live the songs they sing; this relationship between the pair extends beyond
the stage and is one of the many elements that makes their performances
so special. They have shared stages with Great Big Sea, Buffy Sainte-Marie,
Corb Lund, Sarah Harmer, Gord Downie, Dan Mangan, Ruth Moody and
many others and the duo continues to carve out their place in Canada’s
musical landscape.

Fubuki Daiko’s core members have traditional apprenticeship training in
San Francisco. They have toured extensively, performing at a wide range of
venues for audiences of varying ages and backgrounds. The nature of their
almost exclusively original repertoire differentiates them from other North
American and Japanese taiko groups. While their performances reflect
formal training, their compositions also reflect their North American roots
and musical influences. After nineteen years of performing and teaching,
they are still passionate about expanding audience’s expectations of music
in general, and of Japanese taiko music in particular. Their repertoire is a
mixture of traditional sounding songs and songs influenced by a variety
of artists-from Benny Goodman to Led Zeppelin. Hard driving percussion
alternates with gentle bamboo flute melodies to draw in audiences
energetically and spiritually. The sheer physical stamina and full body
nature of the movements add a compelling visual component to the aural
experience.

Jaron Freeman-Fox is a violinist infatuated with the vast diversity his
instrument has to offer. Having extensively studied a variety of traditions
from Canadian old-time fiddle, to Indian Classical music to Jazz to Baroque,
to Indonesian gamelan, Jaron’s virtuosic ensemble Jaron Freeman-Fox &
The Opposite of Everything is dedicated to manifesting the mosaic of the
Canadian musical community, while bringing ambitious, instrumentalfocused music to as wide an audience as possible.
Having produced or played on over 40 albums (Teresa Doyle, Jayme
Stone, Autorickshaw) and toured the world many times over as a solo
artist, bandleader or collaborator with bands such as Delhi 2 Dublin, Ben
Caplan, and Sam Lee, Freeman-Fox fuses his roots of fiddling with his study
of Indian classical music and jazz, while playing the 5-string violins of his
late mentor, fiddle pioneer Oliver Schroer. Contorting the violin into new
traditions, violinist/composer Freeman-Fox dances down the fine line
between the beautiful and the ridiculous, while redefining what the violin
can do.
Community Educational Outreach: Experienced educators, the band will happily offer
demonstrations and educational performances about the band and various cultural
influences at play, as well as the basics of improvisation and composition. The band will
also offer hands-on participatory workshops to young musicians.

“His voice is old-school smooth
and soulful — and his sonic
arrangements are supple and
intricate without being too busy.”
- Sandra Sperounes,
Edmonton Journal
Jesse Peters is a singer/pianist creating an inclusive environment that
invites listeners into the musical experience, making retro-influenced pop
music with a big, old-school sound. On Jesse’s latest album, Swing Time, he
is not afraid to explore jazz as pop music, balancing the past and present
effortlessly. He moves from hand clapping jive to heartfelt ballads and on to
foot-stomping gospel-inspired soul with confidence. He is a master vocalist
and energetic, virtuosic pianist. Whether on a concert stage in China or in
a school auditorium in rural Canada, it’s about accessibility to the music
according to Jesse.
In concert, Jesse and his trio traverse a musical path of originals written
over the past ten years and classics that give wing to his vocal range.
Community Educational Outreach:
Jesse and his band offer school concerts about current trends in hip hop & Electronic
Dance Music and how these have their base in older material (ex. Flo Rida sampling Etta
James, Kanye West sampling Ray Charles.) Jesse and trio use this to introduce students
to the source material. Additionally, Jesse offers one-on-ones, songwriting critiques, and
performance coaching master classes. Jesse’s bassist Travis Switzer offers bass coaching
and Matthew Atkins offers clinics/lessons on drums.
“Peters’ gifted vocals and virtuosity
on the piano was the real draw of
the evening, a point proved song
after song in a set that built to
a rewarding and soulful apex at
night’s end.”
- Chriss Marchand,
Dryden Observer
“The style and flair of this young
cat, coupled with a polished songwriting sense, ensures that we’ll be
hearing an awful lot about Jesse
Peters if there’s any justice in the
world.”

The wildly isolated nature of Manitoba, Canada is a big influence on Keri
and Devin Latimer’s latest musical project, Leaf Rapids. The lyrical themes
explore the inner workings of people left too long inside their cabins in
the dead of winter, but where spring explodes. Recently signed to Black
Hen Music, Leaf Rapids is excited to record in Nashville, TN with producer/
musician Steve Dawson, who’s accolades include a long list of music industry
awards, including JUNO’s, Western Canadian Music Awards, and Canadian
Folk Music Awards. Keri and Devin have been performing together since
1996 in the band Nathan, whom they have toured internationally and
appreciated various forms of recognition with, most notably a JUNO Award
and a Times Changed High and Lonesome Club Whiskey Award.
Together, Keri & Devin
Latimer have earned a JUNO
award for Best Album, 3
Western Canadian Music
Awards, 3 Canadian Folk
Music Awards, a Prairie Music
Award and a SOCAN Echo
Songwriting Prize.
Community Educational Outreach:
Keri Latimer offers workshops in songwriting in addition to theremin workshops. The
theremin is an instrument invented by the Russian scientist, Leon Theremin in the
early 1900’s. It is one of the first electronic instruments, preceding keyboards, and the
player does not touch the instrument at all. By moving ones hands around in the air
and interrupting electromagnetic frequencies, the player can control the pitch and create
melodies. It sounds like an eerie voice. The workshop would describe the inventor and
the interesting history around the instrument, including a performance by Keri Latimer,
and finish up with students individually trying the instrument themselves.

2012, Growing Pains
Lucas Chaisson first built a following as a celebrated guitar player and
singer known for his roots/blues take on pop songs and catchy original
material, often jumping between blues, roots, pop and country. He was
well received on stages across Canada, and earned himself invitations to
the Canmore, Central, Edmonton and Winnipeg Folk Festivals, making new
friends and fans with every chord he strummed. His 2012 release Growing
Pains was acclaimed critically, and earned him a Canadian Folk Music
Award. Newly graduated from high school, the attention that Growing
Pains garnered offered Lucas the opportunity to tour country-wide and
perform at prestigious venues including the Calgary Folk Music Festival,
Big Valley Jamboree and the Vancouver Island Music Festival. Two years
removed from Lucas’ last release, he has matured into one of the country’s
most exciting young talents. Fans who have heard songs penned for his
upcoming release Ghost Stories can attest that Chaisson has blossomed
into an incredible young tunesmith. With only his voice and guitar, Lucas
Chaisson can break your heart and put the pieces back together.
CFMA Nominee
2010, No Loitering
“Chaisson’s voice -- a soulful, Jack
Johnson-like lilt that bounces nicely
off his percussive guitar picking
-- shows impressive nuance for an
artist his age, or any age for that
matter.”
- Calgary Herald
Community Educational Outreach:
Lucas has taught guitar in the past and is a prolific songwriter - both would be possible in
an outreach or educational situation.

Laura Enns | MB
Cassidy Mann has been writing for as
long as she can remember, her lyrics
are heartfelt and honest, telling tales
of young love and lessons learned.
Her songs are reminiscent to those
of Ingrid Michaelson and Taylor
Swift; hooky vocal melodies, a strong
voice and a tinge of nostalgia. Fresh
off the release of her second EP, Blue
Skies and Bright Eyes, Mann has
showcased at JUNOFest 2014 and
performed at this year’s Winnipeg
Folk Festival.
French Press is seriously twisted
indie-pop gold. This female fronted
trio is armed with striking vocals,
catchy hooks, and a driving rhythm
section. The band plays pop music
with grunge and surf influences
exploring themes of repression,
rebellion,
empowerment,
and
desire. French Press is the musical
project of Chantel Emond who has
toured the country with Torontobased orchestral alt-pop band The
O’darling to much buzz and critical
acclaim.
Laura is a Winnipeg-based singer/
songwriter who performs and
records with acoustic guitar and
voice. She sings in a soulful, unique,
and emotional style. Laura uses her
music and lyrics as a way to fully
express herself and reflect on the
world around her, relationships, selfdiscovery/exploration, and day-today experiences that resonate deeply
with the listener. Laura recorded her
first EP at Private Ear Studios, which
was released on August 26, 2014.

- The Winnipeg Free Press
Pianist Derek Yaple-Schobert performs a varied program suited for
even those who think they “don’t usually like classical music.” Giving
introductions and demonstrations on the piano while recounting a few
humorous happenings in his life, Yaple-Schobert starts out with pieces
many will recognize, such as “Für Elise” by Beethoven, “Rondo alla Turca”
by Mozart, “Military Polonaise” by Chopin and “The Entertainer” by Scott
Joplin. Derek then plays music that strongly inspired him to become a
pianist, including knuckle-busting, crowd pleasing works. A fun and lively
“Audience Talk Back” completes the show.
“The audience showed its appreciation with a standing ovation.”
BRAVO! Television featured pianist Derek Yaple-Schobert as “one of the
best of the next generation of classical musicians.” Yaple-Schobert won
prizes, received grants, recorded two CDs, performed recitals in seven
countries from private homes to large venues and he holds a Doctorate in
Piano Performance. Praised by the press for his engaging performances,
he is also known for his easy and entertaining way of speaking with any
audience, proving Derek to be a true classical piano music ambassador.

THE MASK MESSENGER is physical theatre/comedy in the guise of a lecture
and demonstration about masks. The show brims with wisdom and insight,
even though audiences are at times laughing too hard to notice. Spoken
word and body language combine seamlessly to make this show fly.
A menagerie of characters unmasks the folly humans encounter when they
act as if life were simple and appearances were not deceiving. In vignettes
ranging from comic to poignant to bizarre, the show includes expressive
silent masks brought to life with outrageous physicality; comic characters
who speak from behind half-masks; and exotic creatures created by masks
worn other parts of the body.
“Inventive, magical, never less than completely absorbing.”

Xiao Nan Wang was born in Beijing, China. He began his study of the Chinese
flute at age 11. He was a very famous instructor, flutist and composer in
China. In 1987, Xiao Nan had his solo concert in Beijing where he played a
big concerto with an orchestra of 100 members. Xiao Nan immigrated to
Canada in 1995.
Xiao Nan’s artistic vision is to explore new musical ideas. He wishes to
combine the old and the new, and fuse the east and the west. Xiao Nan plays
a new instrument that he has transformed from a diatonic Chinese bamboo
flute to a chromatic instrument made of resin compound. The Manitoba Arts
Council awarded a Major Arts Grant to Xiao Nan in 2007, supporting him to
complete the modifications on his flute. Xiao Nan called this new instrument
the “Chromatic Dizi.” He was invited to appear in the The Saddest Music In
the World, produced by Guy Maddin. Xiao Nan has also performed both
contemporary and classical music with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra,
the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir and
many other groups. Xiao Nan can perform many styles of the music from
different cultural backgrounds.

Coffieman now tours the country offering rocking African shows, that
include entertainment for the whole family, from his jungle songs and
animal calls, to his fancifully fast fingers on the drum, there is something

Kimmy Zee brings you the 2014 Winnipeg Fringe hit!
Mittelschmerz (translation: Middle Pain)...Confessions of Motherhood and
Middle Age... ****1/2
“This clever writer-producer-performer…finds both lots to say and truly original
ways to say it in this one-hour, one-woman, high-energy show…Zeglinski has a
hold of (the audience)…with honest revelations that never lose the funny. Much
of the humour stems from Zeglinski’s rapid-fire delivery…the ease with which she
morphs from character to character…keeps things moving forward smoothly.”
–Julie Carl, Winnipeg Free Press.
Jam-packed hour of shoot-from-the-hip replacement truth-telling. It’s stripped
down Kimmy Zee...no feathers, no fluff.

From Toronto to New York, Budapest to Berlin, audiences around the
world are hailing the Lemon Bucket Orkestra as folk music revolutionaries.
Since their birth 4 years ago, the band has grown from its initial quartet
of buskers to a 16-piece guerrilla folk force with an arm of grassroots
followers and mainstream fans at home and abroad.
Their shows are more than concerts: they’re wild, joyful experiences
rarely contained by four walls; they’re celebrations of tradition and culture
expressed with an explosive punk spirit; they’re ecstatic street parades
that erupt from the collision of nostalgia and imagination.
Offer folk dance workshops.
Repertoire includes songs
sung in Ukrainian, Romanian,
Russian, Serbian and

a woman is not an island:
a tour of short films by Manitoban women media artists
In partnership with the Winnipeg Film Group and with generous
support of the Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg Foundation.
Coinciding with Celebrating 30 years of Mentoring Women
for Women’s Art (MAWA), the Manitoba Arts Network is
partnering with the Winnipeg Film Group to tour 12 short
films throughout the province. The works presented are all
told from a woman’s perspective and represent several film
genres, ranging from drama and animation to experimental,
documentary and dance. Our aim in selecting these films for
a tour throughout Manitoba is to showcase the amazing array
of talented women artists who are creating a varied collection
of media art in this province. We hope to inspire Manitoban
women to explore their own perspectives through the visual
medium of film.

I am a professional artist, educated at the University of Manitoba in
Architecture and Fine Arts. (Six years. No actual degree) For forty years I’ve
worked hard to both earn a living, and become more accomplished as a
painter. This has been a balancing act, to say the least. On the one hand, I’ve
done a lot of commissions that some artists would have turned their noses
up at, in that they were offered by businesses and had a lot of restrictions
attached to them. Over the years I’ve come to accept these commissions as
blessings. For one thing they pay the bills and enable me to buy materials.
But also, in a funny way, I stretch myself for these works. How can I turn
them into Art? How can I sign my name without being embarrassed or
feeling like a hooker? In the end these commissions have led me into realms
that I might never have visited if I’d had an ordinary job and painted on the
side, like most artists I know.

Now, on the point of semi-retirement, I finally have the freedom to paint
whatever I like, or whatever moves me. This can be as simple as responding
to the words of a song and imagining a picture that I wanted to illustrate. I
work in my studio in Emerson, Manitoba and maintain a retail studio in the
Arlington Studio Galleries at 618 Arlington. My website can be checked out
at www.sharoncory.com. I churn out 300 to 500 paintings a year and I’m
sure I’ll die with 5000 paintings undone.
