Service Award — Kay Berry

This award was named in honor of Sylvania Schools Hall of Fame member and former Sylvania
Schools administrator, Jim Glase. Jim was a 3-sport athlete at Burnham High School in the class
of 1942. After college, Glase returned to Sylvania to teach and coach for what would become a
lengthy and distinguished career. As the Athletic Director at Sylvania High School, he was responsible
for creating the programs that are now called the Sylvania Rec, as well as adding multiple sports
for Sylvania High School athletes including: girls basketball, volleyball, boys wrestling, ice hockey,
swimming and girls gymnastics.
His impact on young people in Sylvania and his commitment to athletics is what prompted the
creation of the Jim Glase Distinguished Service Award. This year’s first-ever beneficiary of this award
is someone who, like Jim, had a lifelong career in the Sylvania Schools.
Kay Berry
Kay Barry is being recognized for her commitment to Sylvania Schools,
its students, and especially its athletic programs. For over 40 years, both
Northview and Southview have benefitted from her talents with the athletic
programs being at the forefront of her efforts. She began her educational
career at Northview where she she actually worked with then Athletic Director,
Jim Glase. Transferring to Southview when it opened, she eventually worked
with every Athletic Director until, and even after, her retirement, sharing with
each the intricacies of the Southview job and helping them feel comfortable
with their duties.
She was the key figure in managing ticket sales for the complete range of
sporting events requiring admission: these included football, basketball,
baseball, soccer, wrestling, and volleyball. It was not uncommon for her to end
her day as records clerk at 3:00 and return at 5:00 for an additional 5 hours
of ticket sales and accounting. Despite the importance of accurate finances,
she saw her most important obligation as that to the students. This required
helping various Athletic Directors in guaranteeing that the athletes qualified
for athletic participation. More importantly she was integral in monitoring the
requirements for athletic scholarships and post-high school play; working
with coaches to guarantee that outstanding Cougars fulfilled whatever was
necessary to qualify them to fulfill their dreams.
This award recognizes that Jim Glase loved Sylvania Schools and left an
indelible mark on our athletic programs. Therefore, it is fitting that the first
recipient of the Jim Glase Distinguished Service Award is Kay Barry who
embodies that same love and legacy.

Ralph Kreidel
SOUthview
Northview
Ron Primeau began his teaching career at Sylvania High School, moved to
Northview High School, and finished his final 26 years at Southview High
School. He was the girls head track coach at Northview for six years before
moving to Southview in 1983.
Coach Ralph Kreidel and his wife Carolyn began the Sylvania area fast-pitch
summer program out of their home, housing uniforms and equipment in their
third floor attic because the area lacked a feeder program for the high school
fast-pitch teams. His knowledge of the game was passed on to coaches
through clinics covering everything from rules, etiquette on and off the field,
strategy and safety.
TRACK COACH
SOFTball coach
From 1986-1995 and then again in 2005, Ron oversaw the program as head
coach of Southview boys track team. Under his leadership, the teams won
8 NLL Championships in 11 years and they were runners-up in the other 3.
They were District Runners-Up in 1995 and Regional Runners-Up in 1991.
Southview won 21 Invitational Championships during his tenure and had an
impressive dual meet record of 128-21. Ron won District Coach of the Year in
1988 and 1995 and NLL Coach of the Year 8 times.
He was nominated for State Coach of the Year in 1988. Ron continues to
help the Southview track program, working each of the home meets and the
league meet each year. He and his wife, Anita, have three children and four
grandchildren.
During the off-season, Ralph taught pitching to players and parents, getting
them ready for the upcoming season which eventually evolved into a feeder
program for both the Northview and Southview High School programs. At its
peak, there were more than 420 Sylvania girls participating each summer and
as a result, the Sylvania fast-pitch program developed into an outstanding,
state recognized program. This eventually led to the Suburban Girls’ Fast-pitch
Program covering nearly all of Northwest Ohio.
Ralph was inducted into the Northwest Ohio Softball Hall of Fame in 2009 and
the Ohio High School Athletic Association and twice received commendations
from the Sylvania Board of Education as an Educator of the Year. He was
President of the Northview Athletic Boosters for 5 years. He was also the
Assistant Coach for the Northview programs of both softball for 15 years, and
basketball for 11 years, under head coach Jerry Sigler.
Multiple athletes have had the opportunities to experience many successful
seasons under the direction of Coach Kreidel. His teams won League
Championships in 5 of his coaching years and District Championships in 3 of
those years. In 1993, his team qualified for the State Final Four.
There were a number of players that went on to college with scholarships in
both softball and basketball. Today, there are a number of these former players
coaching their own children in these sports. Ralph passed away in _____

SOUthview Class of 1997
Kari Barcus made her mark in the sports of Tennis and Basketball, achieving
some of the highest honors in both sports. In tennis, she qualified for the
state tennis tournament. But basketball is where she excelled even more.
It was under fellow Hall of Famer, Coach Kevin Mitchell’s guidance, that
Kari learned the game of basketball, a sport which earned her a full ride to
Hillsdale College. Kari credits basketball for keeping her accountable in and
out of the classroom.
During her tenure at Southview, Jen Nance Williams excelled in both
basketball and volleyball. She was part of a team that went undefeated in
the NLL for 4 years with an 88-8 overall record in basketball. She was allconference in both sports and a 4-year starter in basketball. Her talents in
basketball earned her a scholarship to Baldwin-Wallace.
basketball
She earned a degree in marketing and business from Hillsdale and went on
to the University of Toledo where she earned her MBA. Kari currently resides
in Las Vegas with her husband, Chris, and their two children. She is a Senior
Mortgage Loan Officer for Southern Fidelity Mortgage. She enjoys spending
her free time with her family near home and out-of-state, playing with her
children, as well as traveling to the beach.
High school sports had a true impact on Kari, as she says they taught her many
things including, “leadership, humility, goal setting, hard work, depending on
others and respecting authority. I learned how to handle performing under
pressure and to follow through with my responsibilities.”
basketball
At B-W, she was all-conference in 2000 and 2001 and first team all-american
in 2001. During her college career, her team had a combined record of 10813 over 4 years and earned 2 trips to the Elite 8. In 2010, Jen was inducted
into the B-W Hall of Fame.
She currently lives in Morehead, Kentucky with her husband David and
daughter Adley. Jen serves as an athletic director and community education
director where she earned the honor of Regional AD of the Year in 2014.
Jennifer says,“the fantastic experience I had as a high school athlete not only
taught me valuable life lessons but also got me started on the career path I’m
still on today. I’m very thankful to have played at Southview for tremendous
coaches and with amazing teammates.”
Lauren (Rose) Kucic
SOUthview Class of 1994
TENNIS
Lauren Rose Kucic was best known at Southview High School for her tennis career. During her tenure at Southview, she became the first state champion for the school in her sport. In addition
to being State Champion in 1994, she played in the Junior U.S. Open in 1995 and was ranked in the top 10 nationally from 1992-1996.
Her talents earned her a scholarship to Vanderbilt University where she was a member and co-captain from 1996-2001. Her team finished Second at the NCAA Championships in 2001.
Lauren earned her bachelor’s degree in Human & Organizational Development and she currently works for JPMorgan Chase as a Talent and Learning Executive.
She and her husband, Ed, live in New York City with their child, Taylor, and are expecting a new baby girl in early December. When asked about the role high school sports played in her life,
Lauren says, “Tennis is an individual sport; your success and failure lies solely in your hands as the competitor. High school was the first time I had the opportunity to parlay my individual
skills in tennis to a team sport which in turn taught me many aspects of team camaraderie.”
