Paul Albrechtsen Donation Betters the Lives
of those with Dementia
A
s an immigrant from Denmark in 1954 with $50
in his pocket, Paul Albrechtsen bought a truck and
started servicing the oil industry in Western Manitoba.
Today, that one truck has grown into the huge fleet of
rigs that makes up Paul’s Hauling, one of the leading
trucking companies in the country.
Albrechtsen has done well in life. So well, in fact,
that 20 years ago he set up a foundation in his name
through which he could give some of his money away.
Riverview Health Centre is very fortunate to have
become one of the recipients of this self-made man’s
generosity.
Albrechtsen’s ongoing support of Riverview started
several years ago when he contributed to the Gala
dinner. As he became more familiar with Riverview’s
vital services to those in need, he decided to increase
his support. The Palliative Care Refurbishment project
caught his interest; he came on board as a contributor,
kick starting the project with a substantial donation of
$250,000. This enabled the renovation of 10 of the
30 rooms on the unit.
“I sincerely believe that Paul’s contribution gave this
important project credibility, which encouraged others
to come forward,”
says Sheldon
Mindell, Executive
Director of the
Riverview Health
Centre Foundation.
“Many others did
come forward,
and the refurbishment on
the unit is now complete.”
Paul Albrechtsen
$1 Million for Alzheimer’s/Dementia/
Special Behaviours Units
Albrechtsen, it seems, was just getting started;
adding to his already substantial and ongoing support,
he recently made a commitment of $1 million, which
will be the catalyst for a new direction in care for the
60 residents on the Alzheimer’s/Dementia/Special
Behaviours units.
“We are thrilled that Paul sees our Centre as a leader
in providing services to people in this area of care,”
says Mindell. “His financial commitment will allow
Riverview to move forward in providing the best
possible environment within the province of Manitoba.”
With its $1 million commitment, the Paul Albrechtsen
Foundation recognizes that Riverview Health Centre
strives to be on the cutting edge of the best possible
services available for people with Dementia and their
families.
When the Alzheimer’s/Dementia/Special Behaviours
units opened in 1997, they exceeded even the highest
standards of care and accommodation at that time.
Today, research shows that adjustments need to be
made to better meet the needs of these individuals.
These research findings are a prime consideration for
Riverview’s design team members as they plan the
redevelopment of the units. More recreational and
socialization areas, as well as programming
opportunities for residents, will be made available,
as will easier access to the outdoor environment. The
design will also allow for less restrictive movement for
residents while keeping safety a high priority.
Albrechtsen is, plain and simple, happy
to help. A man with a compassionate
heart, he wants to give back to the
community that has provided him with so
much over his many years in business.
“I have been very fortunate in my life
and in my business, and I can’t take it
with me,” he says, jokingly adding that
he’d rather give with a warm hand than
a cold one.
Albrechtsen shares his good fortune
with several charities that are close to his
heart. He hopes his contributions will help
in two areas: finding a cure for some of
the devastating illnesses with which
people must contend and providing a
way to better the lives of those currently
affected.
Albrechtsen says that he wants to
give to organizations that will make a
difference in people’s lives. Riverview
Health Centre is proud to be counted as
one that is doing just that.

2014 Cycle On Life
Most Successful Yet!
S
unday June 8th was Riverview Health Centre Foundation’s 16th annual
Cycle on Life, and it was the most successful ever in terms of both
participation and fundraising! Over 260 cyclists, all dressed in yellow t-shirts
– except for the Blue Bomber Alumni – scared off most of the rain as they
took off from Riverview Health Centre on either the 65 km “Olympia Cycle on
St. Mary’s Ride” or the 25 km “Riverview Street Ride.” No matter which route
chosen, all riders had a great time while successfully raising in excess of
$140,000 for the Riverview Health Centre Foundation.
The day started with minor bike tune-ups by CAA and/or Olympia Cycle
on St. Mary’s, coffee from Tim Horton’s and stretching led by the Blue
Brigade. The lead cyclists were Blue Bomber Alumni. Riders returned to
Riverview for a massage, a barbecue lunch, prize draws and the assurance
that their fundraising efforts would make a difference in the lives of the
patients and residents of Riverview Health Centre.

the Centre Stage Gala hosted by the Riverview Health Centre
Foundation and held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
Clowns, jugglers, musicians and comedian Andrew Grose kept
the crowd of over 450 amused for the evening. Everyone had a
chance to bid on great silent auction items, and Bill Knight
auctioned off four grand prizes during a live auction. After the
gourmet meal, Dal McCloy, long time
member and Chair of the Riverview
Health Centre Board, received the Friends of

ristie Pearson is happy to announce that she
once used the gift of song to show her support
for Riverview Health Centre.
The singing occurred because Pearson, who
accepted an invitation to become a Riverview Health
Centre Foundation Board member last January,
grew up in the neighbourhood and went to
Riverview School. “Our school’s choir used to come
and sing to the residents and patients on several of
the units,” she recalls. “I feel a real connection to the
Centre that stems back to those early days.”
hris Bachinski is at a time in his career when
he is able to give back to the community. When
he started contemplating a volunteer opportunity,
Riverview Health Centre came to mind.
A few years ago, Bachinski had the chance to
witness the Centre’s great care in action when his
father spent some time on the Rehabilitation unit
after suffering a stroke. “Our whole family thought
that Riverview was an incredible place that provides
incredible care,” he says.
More recently, he heard many compliments about
In recent years, Pearson learned more about
the Centre from his colleague, David Baker, who is a
Riverview from a personal situation. Her grandmother past Riverview Health Centre Board member. “David
passed away on the Palliative Care unit, and Pearson is passionate about Riverview – he has nothing but
became familiar with the home-like rooms and the
good things to say about it,” says Bachinski.
exceptional care provided by staff who, she says, did
a wonderful job of making her grandmother’s last
The Riverview Health Centre
days as comfortable as they could be.
With these positive experiences in mind, Pearson’s
answer was a definite “yes!” when Foundation Board
member Greg Thompson asked her to join and
become involved with a new fundraising initiative
currently in the planning stages.
With her background in marketing, Pearson is a
good fit: she has worked for two well-known
organizations in a fundraising and marketing role,
and she has had plenty of experience with other
volunteer boards, including Community Living
Winnipeg, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation and the
Winter Club. She is eager to put her skills to work to
benefit Riverview Health Centre.
Along with her husband, Doug Pollard, Pearson
is raising three young children. What parent gets
through the child-rearing years without singing to
their offspring? We hope Kristie is getting her vocal
cords tuned up for another song at Riverview!
Foundation attracts Board
members from all walks of life.
These profiles reveal the unique
reasons that drive individuals to
become involved.
His own personal experiences, coupled with Baker’s
sentiments, were enough to steer Bachinski towards
the Centre. He became a member of the Riverview
Health Centre Foundation Board last spring.
So far in his new volunteer role, Bachinski has
assisted with the development of a new fundraising
event, and he looks forward to future involvement
wherever he is needed. There is no doubt he’ll be kept
busy – his career with Think Shift (an agency that
helps client companies with branding, culture and
leadership) has provided him with skills that make him
an invaluable addition to the Foundation Board.
f you asked Michael Erlanger what first brought
Riverview Health Centre to his attention, he would
say it was his love of cycling.
When Erlanger was new to Winnipeg a few years
ago, a family friend introduced him to fellow cyclist,
Sheldon Mindell. The two hit it off, and it wasn’t long
before Mindell, the Executive Director of the
Riverview Health Centre Foundation, talked him into
participating in the annual Cycle on Life.
“For two years, my wife Wendy, my two kids
and I took part in this event as a family,” says
Erlanger. “That was my introduction, and it lead to
an invitation to become a Cycle on Life committee
member.”
Since then, Erlanger has co-chaired the
committee with Foundation Board member
Greg Ward. With such dedicated involvement in
a Foundation event, it was only natural for Mindell
to ask his newfound cycling buddy to also become
a Foundation Board member. Erlanger accepted
and came “on board” this past spring.
An architect by profession, Erlanger had the
opportunity to learn more about Riverview’s vision
and values when he was asked to work on the
design, as well as lead a team of stakeholders,
contractors and suppliers, for the now completed
Palliative Care Refurbishment Project. “The intent
of the design was to stay as far away as possible
from an institutional look and instead make the
rooms feel like home. That is what Riverview is all
about,” he says.
As a Board member, Erlanger’s skills as an
organizer and facilitator are being put to excellent
use as he becomes familiar with more of the
Foundation’s activities. “A Board is all about sharing
experiences to ensure continued success.”

Susan’s MS Research Fund: Helping Families Cope with the Disease
Long Service and
Retiring Employees
W
Each year, Riverview Health Centre honours
its long service and retiring employees with a
recognition ceremony, awards presentation and
dinner. Congratulations to the following who, in
2013, reached their milestones.
hen someone in the family has Multiple
Sclerosis (MS), everyone is affected.
As a parent of a daughter who had the disease,
Ian Blicq is well aware of the difficulties families
endure during the course of a loved one’s illness. “It’s
very hard for family members to manage and cope
with the challenges of MS, and it’s not uncommon
for family breakdown to occur,” he explains.
Blicq, a long-time past Board member at
Riverview Health Centre, recognized that these
social implications of MS were not being addressed
in research. He decided to do something to change
that: he established Susan’s MS Research Fund two
years ago at Riverview Health Centre Foundation in
honour of his daughter, Susan Blicq, a teacher and
mother of two young children. Susan passed away
at the Centre on June 6, 2012, after an eight-year
battle with the disease.
Finding a cure for MS has proven to be elusive,
but Blicq is convinced that research into the social
issues is key to helping individuals living with this
disease and their families. He explains that the fund
will support research that strives to improve quality
of life, rehabilitation and symptomatic therapy
outcomes for MS patients. It will also help
researchers studying ways to improve whole life
Projects Funded to Date
Four projects are now approved
for support from Susan’s MS Research
Fund. Investigations include:
• determining MS impact on
caregivers, family and children
• improving mobility by electric
stimulation
• gaining ways to understand the
impact of MS on women’s needs
• reducing hard-to-cope-with
excruciating skin surface pain
support at home and in the health care system
for those affected.
It’s not just the adults that Ian is concerned about.
Children have to bear a troubled environment at
home, along with separation anxiety when a parent
is admitted to a health care centre. “An important
priority is to find fresh ways to foster early support
to help maintain and strengthen the whole shaken
family when parents are overwhelmed by the
disease,” he says.
Familiar with Riverview’s commitment to research
– especially in the areas of rehabilitation and long
term care – Blicq considered the Centre to be an
ideal site for fostering and conducting MS research.
To that end, he approached Riverview’s
Foundation with the MS Research Fund concept. He
had a substantial start-up contribution, to which the
Foundation added strong financial support. As well,
over 80 personal contributors are playing a key role
in helping to strengthen the base. To date, over
$80,000 has been raised, enabling the
establishment of four research projects that are
currently underway. Continuing and new ongoing
donations will help build on current success.

Help to Grow Susan’s MS Research Fund!
The fund will sponsor new MS research for Manitobans, by Manitobans, in Manitoba. Topic areas
include improving patient, family and caregiver support, tailoring outpatient assistance and finding
ways to improve symptomatic support at home. Discussions are being held with the MS Society of
Canada and the Manitoba Health Research Council to foster mutual cooperation and support.

FURRY FACES
R
iverview Health Centre is going to the dogs…and everyone loves it! On most days,
somewhere in the Centre a dog can be found visiting with patients and residents.
Most of these furry friends are looking for attention – maybe a pat on the head or scratch
behind the ear. In return, these friendly visitors give lots of love with nuzzles and licks.
We’d like to introduce you to a few of these furry faces. If you see any of these
happy-go-lucky animals, go ahead and give them a pat - you won’t regret it!
M
y name is Callie and
I was born on the
mean streets of Winnipeg.
Luckily, my adoptive father,
Sheldon Mindell, rescued
me – he lets me live at his
house and he brings me to
Riverview so I can visit with
all his friends here. Because
I’m a Miniature Poodle/
Bichon, it’s easy for me to
sit on people’s laps.
I
’m a Miniature Pinscher/
Pug and my name is
Brixton. I lived life on the
edge and got caught, but
my grandpa, Sheldon
Mindell, broke me loose
from the pound. I was once
called “Lilly,” but I don’t
look like a Lilly, do I? I’m
glad gramps changed my
name, and I’ll come to
anyone at Riverview who
calls me “Brixton.”
W
e’re a brother-sister
team, and you can’t
hold us back. Our names
are Ceasar and Tiffany, and
we’re five-year-old Bichon
Frises. Our owner, Norman
Kasian, has been bringing
us to Riverview since we
were puppies. We love it
here! We go for walks to
the units and we’ll play with
anyone who’s interested.
Are you?
W
e hope you like this family picture. The only one missing
is our owner, Kim Glowachuk – she’s behind the camera.
We take turns going to Riverview Health Centre to visit people.
I’m Sydney, the black Cocker Spaniel (middle right). I’m 15
years old and will soon retire after a long career as a furry
friend at Riverview. The French Bulldog on the left is Lucy –
she’s only four and she loves going 90 miles an hour. Roxy is
the little gray Pekingese Maltese in front of me. She has it easy
– Kim carries her around in a baby sling because she needs to
reserve her energy for all the visiting she does on the units.
Behind me in the photo is Willow; she’s a 10-year-old Golden
Retriever who loves doing “meet and greets” with the residents.
Her favourite treat is ice cream. See you soon at Riverview!
Woof!!! Meeeooow!!! Calling all furry friends at Riverview! If you would like to be featured in an upcoming issue of Health Views, please ask your owner to contact the Foundation office at 204-478-6271.
Riverview’s Communication Strategy: Getting the Word Out
R
iverview Health Centre
is located off the
beaten track. It’s on the
Red River in a quiet
residential neighbourhood
a few blocks off of the
main drag of Osborne
Street South. Turn east at
any one of the avenues
between Arnold and
Oakwood, and you’ll run
into Riverview’s large,
treed campus – you’ll be
amazed!
The thing is, unless
you have encountered a
situation in which a family
member or friend needed
care, or unless you live in
the neighbourhood, you
might not think to make
that east turn off of
Osborne to go and check
out the facility.
With that reality in mind, Riverview wants to raise
consciousness about all the programs and services
available at this premier health care centre. As
mentioned in the samples above, the Centre treats
people with long-term and palliative care needs,
as well as medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s
disease and other forms dementia, brain injury
and stroke.
Take note when you see messages similar to these
in the media – we hope they will get people thinking
about us. While we designed these ads as part of a
communication campaign rather than an advertising
blitz, we do want you to consider Riverview in your
philanthropic plans. As our campaign acknowledges,
chances are high that you or someone you know
and love will one day require care at our facility.

Through the Eyes
of a Grandchild
L
en Podheiser does not forget when people treat
him well, and he is quick to report that people
treated him wonderfully well during his two
month stay on Riverview Health Centre’s
Stroke Rehabilitation unit in 2013.
“I found the staff to be amazing,” says
Podheiser. “I will be eternally grateful to the
people there – I got crackerjack treatment!”
To show his appreciation, Podheiser has
become an ongoing contributor to the Riverview
Health Centre Foundation, and he also sponsors
a team for the annual golf tournament.
Podheiser is known by his grandson, Joseph
Michaw, as “Zaida.” Joseph regularly visited during
his Zaida’s stay at Riverview, so he had lots of
opportunity to observe the surroundings and the
care. Joseph agrees with his grandfather’s opinion
about the Centre, and he decided to write a story
about it as a Grade 3 class project.
As they say, there is nothing like seeing something
through the eyes of a child!

LOUIS VE RMETTE
remembered Riverview in his will.
F
or ten years, Louis Vermette called Riverview
Health Centre home. He lived on 2 East, the
Respiratory unit, where he received the care he
needed for a condition he’d had since birth.
Thoughts on Giving
“It takes each of us to make a
difference for all of us.”
– Jackie Mucheson
“No one has ever become poor by giving.”
– Anne Frank
“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” – Mother Teresa
“We only have what we give.”
– Isabel Allende
Louis passed away on December 19, 2013, but before he died,
he made a decision to show his appreciation to the place he called
home by leaving $10,000 in his will for Riverview.
Louis’ wife of 31 years, Karen, is grateful that her husband was
able to stay at Riverview during the last decade of his life. “His
condition causes muscle weakness that slowly worsens over the
years,” she explains. “Throughout his stay, staff assisted Louis as
his mobility declined from being able to walk to requiring a power
wheelchair, and I’m thankful for the support he received.”
Riverview was more than just a facility for Louis to receive care.
He developed friendships with other patients and staff members
and he enjoyed recreational activities such as games of dominos
with Karen and her sister, Monday afternoon Bingo on the unit and
catching either a Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ football game or a
Montreal Canadiens’ hockey game whenever he could.
“He also loved the food at the Centre – he always looked
forward to meal time,” smiles Karen.
For three years in the mid-2000s, Karen worked part time at
Riverview as a Health Care Aide on CD2. After her morning shift,
she would head straight to Louis’ unit. “Those were good years
because I was right there and could easily get to the unit to visit,”
she says.
When Louis made the decision to name Riverview in his will,
he invited his lawyer to come to the Centre, and they sat in the
cafeteria to make the arrangements. According to Karen, it was a
fitting decision because Louis loved Riverview and felt very much
at home there.
“We can choose to be affected
by the world or we can choose
to affect the world.”
– Heidi Wills

You don’t have
to give until it hurts …
just give until it
feels right.
Mindell says that there
are many ways to support
Riverview, and people can give
according to their means. He
says people don’t have to give
until it hurts – just give until it
feels right.
If donors choose to give
through the Foundation’s Circle
of Life Planned Giving Program,
they can make a commitment
and be recognized today for
funds that will be donated later.
No minimum contribution is
needed to be a Circle of Life
member.
“Louis’ foresight will help
us to enhance the day-to-day
lives of Riverview’s patients and
residents now and into the
future,” he says.
Please fill out the form on the reverse
and mail in the enclosed envelope. You can also donate online at rhcf.mb.ca
or call us at 204-478-6271.
"
“Anyone can do what Louis
Vermette did – you simply need
to have the willingness,” says
Sheldon Mindell, Executive
Director of the Riverview Health
Centre Foundation. “We
appreciate patients and families,
such as the Vermettes, who
recognize how important it is to
give back to the Centre.”
Mindell was pleased to make
arrangements to have “Louis
Vermette” inscribed upon the
Centre’s Donor Wall. He’s ready
and willing to make these
arrangements for many more of
our future donors!
Show your support
for the wise words of
these writers.
Please take the time
today to donate to
the Riverview Health
Centre Foundation.
THANK YOU!
DID YOU?
Donor Louis Vermette had the honour of
cutting the ribbon at last year’s Cycle on Life.
