PEOPLE
DECEMBER 2005
Thank you for your valuable contribution and participation
that has helped CANSA grow during 2005.
DIRECTOR'S
FESTIVE SEASON WISH
As 2005 draws to a close I sit back with a thankful sigh of appreciation for our Council and
all our managers, staff and volunteers for their creativity, constant effort and wisdom.
Each year brings new challenges and yet we seem to take them in our stride
as we try to raise cancer awareness in our communities.
I wish you all an enjoyable Festive Season and a prosperous New Year. May this time be
spent with your loved ones and allow you to show them your love and appreciation for their
support during the year. Try to use this quality time to make up for the hours sacrificed in
service to CANSA. I hope you will return to work in 2006 feeling positive and re-energised
for the challenges that the New Year will undoubtedly hold. Please drive safely and enjoy
the rest.
Warm regards,
Stephanie van Deventer

DOING IT BY THE BOOK
To celebrate their 25th anniversary,
Leserskring/Leisure Books donated a
range of books to the Western Cape
Resource Centre. Two copies of each
book are kept in the Resource Centre
Library, whilst a number were allocated
to the four CANSA regional offices in the
Western Cape and the Eikehof Interim
Home. Some of the donated books will
be used as prizes for competitions in the
Resource Centre's monthly electronic
newsletter and for prizes at schools for
the Healthy Living educational project.
The Resource Centre provides
information to the public in the Western
Cape; provincial and regional staff;
health professionals; cancer patients
and their families; the media and
Government departments to reduce the
impact of cancer, focusing mainly on
prevention and early detection.

KOPPIE VIR KANSA OP WELLINGTON
CANCER
SURVIVORS
REMEMBERED
IN KHAYELITSHA
In a joint venture between CANSA
and the Khayelitsha Ministers
Association, the Reverend
D. Mtsolo and his congregation
graciously opened their doors
for a remembrance get-together
on 4 September 2005.
With people from all over attending,
the focus was not only on those who
have survived cancer but also those
lost to the disease. Three survivors
shared their cancer experience
with guests. Mr. Nokulila, a prostate
cancer survivor, urged men to go for
PSA testing. The Red Cross Society
Choir from Khayelitsha provided
excellent music to conclude the
day's activities.
werk gespring. Voorleggings is aan
potensiële borge gestuur en kaartjies is
ontwerp. Die Stokkiesdraai-komitee het vir
gassprekers gesorg en dinge het sommer
gou-gou netjies in plek begin val.
Gretha van Niekerk van “dit”-tydskrif het 'n
praatjie oor mode en skoonheid gegee
terwyl Paul van Platinum Hair and Beauty
en Nicci van Professional Make-up een
gelukkige dame in 'n 'nuwe mens'
omskep het! Borgskappe het dit moontlik
gemaak om 'n heerlike sjampanje-ontbyt
aan gaste voor te sit. Sommige van die
borge wat as sprekers opgetree het, het
ook geskenkbewyse en geskenke vir
gelukkige trekkings verskaf.

THE PRIDE OF THE WESTERN CAPE
Tannie Martie receiving her
award from Dalene Slabbert, HPC,
Beaufort West at the AGM.
Martha Pienaar
Martha Pienaar or Tannie Martie as she is
known in Beaufort West, has been
involved with cancer patients for more
than fifteen years - twelve of those with
CANSA as a member of the Volunteer
Liaison Committee of Beaufort West.
Although not a cancer survivor, Tannie
Martie's loyalty and commitment to
CANSA is truly gratifying given that she is
86 years old, crippled in one leg and
suffers from a heart ailment. She has
never used her age or physical condition
as an excuse for not working as a
volunteer. She is community orientated
and committed to her patients whom she
provides with care and emotional support.
Her passion for children has resulted in her
doing an enormous amount of
fundraising, especially during the annual
Toktokkie campaign at schools in her area.
At the same time she promotes healthy
living amongst the young by talking to
them about health issues. She is also
active in other fundraising events such as
Cuppa for CANSA and Breast Cancer
Awareness walks to raise funds for the
organisation.
Martha is currently caring for seven cancer
patients in her area. She visits regularly to
care for them and shows great empathy
towards her patients and their families.
Tannie Martie does this and a whole lot
more quietly and without expecting
recognition from her peers or from CANSA.
She believes all cancer patients should be
treated with dignity and respect and has
become a role model in her community.
Martha Pienaar is synonymous with CANSA
in Beaufort West. She is an inspiration in the
lives of people living with cancer in her
community. If ever there was a custodian of
the CANSA cause Tannie Martie is that
person. We are grateful and honoured to
have her on our team.
This married volunteer is currently the
Patient Care Coordinator in Stilbaai where
she coordinates the activities of all the
patient care volunteers in the area. She
has made a huge impact on the lives of
cancer patients and their families in her
community. Her medical knowledge and
personal experience with cancer and its
treatment is of great value to patients,
their families and other volunteers
involved with patient care and support.
She is a strong advocate for promoting
healthy living amongst the youth; hence
her interest and active participation in
health promotion. Christine believes early
detection of cancer is vital for successful
treatment and actively promotes this
belief in the community. Her vision is to
make all Stilbaai residents Cancer Smart
and since joining CANSA as a volunteer
she has made great strides towards
achieving this goal.
Christine Page
This registered nurse was diagnosed with
breast cancer in 1997 while residing in
Johannesburg. Reach for Recovery
provided her with excellent support after a
radical mastectomy following her
diagnosis. She relocated to Stilbaai in 1998
and soon realised that there was a great
need for support and her services as a
volunteer from cancer patients living in the
area. A Volunteer Liaison Committee
established in Stilbaai in 2001 spurred
Christine on to become a patient care
volunteer; later on she became involved in
health promotion.

Old Age Home where she does practical
demonstrations such as crochet; knitting;
fabric painting; making dried flowers for
cards and gifts. She makes knee blankets

entertains them with stories and poetry.
Marie is a Liaison Committee member and
recently assisted with a breast information
tea in the Ceres community. By reaching
out to those in need, this dedicated
Champion for CANSA has made an
enormous difference in the lives of many
in need.
Jeanne Olivier, HPC, Boland
and Marie Viljoen at the AGM.
Marie Viljoen
“After 17 years as a CANSA volunteer
the word “cancer” somehow grows in
and on you, with the result that one is
100% motivated regarding cancer.”
These are the words of a dedicated
volunteer for whom no task or situation
takes too much time or effort. To Marie
Viljoen the patient is her first and ultimate
priority - she works tirelessly to meet the
needs of patients; attends meetings
regularly and makes any contribution,
including financial, whenever needed.
Marie is president of the Provincial
Hospital; is involved with distributing food
to the elderly; helps with transporting
them to the shops and library, as well as to
and from pension and disability payout
points. She does hospital visitation and
serves on the Women's Council of her
church. For more than 11 years she has
been involved with organising skills
Marlene Louw
Marlene has been involved with CANSA as
a volunteer for more than 10 years and is
the coordinator of the Patient Services
Volunteer group in the Bredasdorp/Napier
area. Apart from playing a vital role in giving
care to caregivers and volunteers and
helping them to support cancer patients and
their families, she is also involved in the
emotional and social wellbeing of patients
and their loved ones.
Marlene is a social worker at the Overberg
Municipality, working in towns and areas
where CANSA is active. She gives support
and input in health matters concerning
clinics and communities. The training of
community health workers on farms is a
project dear to her heart. She links this
with training them to do health promotion
for CANSA in order to provide healthy
lifestyle choices.
Marlene is well-known as a participant in
community activities; involvement with
organisations and programmes to meet
the needs of the elderly, battered women
and traumatised children in local
communities.
With financial assistance from the Lions
Club, Marlene and her patient care
volunteers established a facility at the
Otto du Plessis Hospital to accommodate
cancer patients needing palliative care
and pain control. She is also on the Red
Cross management team.
Marlene is an inspiration to many people
and in particular cancer patients and their
families. She is an enthusiastic volunteer,
committed to making a difference in the
lives of people and helping them to uplift
themselves for a better quality of life.
These dedicated women are all worthy
winners of the Mariette Loots Cancer
Merit Award. They are Champions for
CANSA in the true sense of the word.
We thank them for bringing hope,
comfort and strength to people living
with cancer in their time of need.
CANSA ACKNOWLEDGES
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT
Tersia Fourie, Health Programmes
Cooordinator (HPC) in the Southern
Cape/Karoo region was the recipient
of the CANSA Floating Trophy for
Outstanding Achievement in the
field of Patient Care for 2005. She
received her award from CANSA CEO
Niamaat Gamildien at the Western Cape
AGM in September.
Currently employed as an HPC in Zone 3 in
the Southern Cape, Tersia has worked in
this capacity in the Klein Karoo and
Southern Cape for the past five years. One
of her tasks is to facilitate volunteers
involved with patient care in ten towns in
her zone. She is strong in volunteer
management and has empowered many
patient care volunteers to successfully
manage patients in their own towns and
surrounding areas.
She has a reputation of being a person with
strong values and leadership abilities;
exceptional organisational skills and a
supportive management style. As a trained
nurse Tersia has endeared herself to
volunteers involved with patient care and
consequently receives strong support in
her zone.
She is a worthy recipient of this prestigious
floating trophy for outstanding achievement
in this category. Tersia, we congratulate and
thank you for your energy and commitment
to patients and to CANSA.

5-A-DAY WILL KEEP
THE DOCTOR AWAY
In September 2005 the first 5-A-Day for
Better Health International Symposium
was held in Durban prior to the prestigious
International Congress on Nutrition. The
South African 5-A-Day initiative hosted the
symposium that was co-sponsored by the
World Health Organisation (WHO) and
financially supported by the Land Bank.
The International Cancer Institute
estimates that 35% of all cancers are dietrelated and that by eating at least five
portions of vegetables and fruit daily,
cancer rates could drop by as much as
20%. The 5-A-Day generic fresh produce
campaign aims to encourage all South
Africans to include plenty of fresh
vegetables and fruit in their daily diet and
is endorsed by CANSA.
The symposium provided the ideal
opportunity to relaunch the 5-A-Day
concept in South Africa. The International
5-A-Day Federation will be launched in
due course.
Charlotte Picane, HPC of Cape Metro
represented CANSA Western Cape at
the symposium.

'N DRAFSTAP
Op Vrouedag (9 Augustus) het meer as
6 000 vrouens deelgeneem aan die
Totalsports-vrouewedloop 2005 in Bellville
wat deur Asics aangebied is. Meer as
R30 000 is ingesamel vir drie
liefdadigheidsorganisasies, KANSA;
Reik na Herstel en die Wes-Kaapse
Netwerk vir Geweld teen Vroue.
Moorreesburg, Hopefield and Velddrif.
CANSA is most grateful to communities
along the route who opened their
hearts and wallets by participating in the
auctions and feeding hungry participants.
The fact that a home-made bread fetched
R500 at one of the auctions is indicative of
how well-received the event was!
Captain Etienne Marais from SAPS
brought joy to children living in
communities along the route by handing
out gift parcels. He also led a service
of thanksgiving at the end of the event
at Laaiplek.
Despite the severe drought in the region,
the men were able to raise a record
amount of R150 000, bringing the total
raised during the past 14 years of the
event to an impressive R900 000.
CANSA is most grateful to each
and every person associated with this
event. Apart from the generosity of
Metropolitan and Rola Motors, farmers
often donated items which they later
bought back at the auctions; countless
individuals also supported the project all contributing to an enormously
successful event.
A special word of thanks to the wives
and partners of the participants who
made it possible for them to participate.
There is great excitement amongst
those involved in the race about next

enough money to take the total amount
raised past the R1 million mark for the
15 years they have been on the river.

STELLENBOSCH GEE DIE PAS AAN
KANSA Stellenbosch, in samewerking
met die Stellenbosch Studenteraad
en Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic het op
24 September 'n Kankerslim Voorkomingspretstap aangebied as deel van KANSA se
nasionale Kanker Slim-bewusmakingsveldtog.
Dié stap is gereël om soveel as moontlik
van die 22 000 studente op die dorp met
die KANSA-boodskap te bereik. Een in elke
vier Suid-Afrikaners loop die gevaar om 'n
kankerstatistiek te word, daarom is dit
noodsaaklik dat ons almal na ons
gesondheid omsien om kanker te
voorkom. Met die ondersteuning van die
Studenteraad en 833 studente het ons
bewusmaking van 'n gesonder leefstyl van
stapel gestuur.
Van stappers is verwag om die volgende
uit te beeld: gesond eet; meer aktief te
wees; om SonSlim te wees; te streef na 'n
rookvrye omgewing; en 'n gunsteling
onder studente, bewusmaking van
borskanker.
Die beoordelaars was dit eens dat die
uitbeeldings en baniere briljant was. Die
studente het almal verras met hulle
skeppende, humoristiese baniere,
slagspreuke en krete. Die baniere word
tans by die Neelsie uitgestal en sal later
aan KANSA geskenk word.
'n Gesonde R8 930 is tydens dié pretstap
ingesamel.
Baie dankie aan die Studenteraadbestuurslede, KANSA-vrywilligers en die
studente vir die bobaas reëlings en
wonderlike ondersteuning. Ons sê ook
baie dankie aan ons borge, Stellenbosch
Medi-Clinic en die Munisipaliteit.
Did you know?
Redheads with fair skin often have the highest risk
of skin cancer and other sun-related medical problems like
premature ageing. Now researchers from Duke University
in the USA have found out why.
Apparently, people with red hair have pigment that
is different to people with darker hair.
Red melanosomes (structures in the skin which
contain pigment) are much more reactive to trigger-like
UV rays than black melanosomes. This suggests that
it takes less UV rays to make potentially harmful cellular
changes in people with red hair. Longevity.
A TIME
OF GIVING
Giving means extending one's love
with no conditions, no expectations
and no boundaries.
Peace of mind occurs, therefore when
we put all our attention into giving and
have no desire to get anything from, or
to change, another person.
The giving motivation leads to a sense
of inner peace and joy that is unrelated
to time.

CITY OF CAPE TOWN CANCER REGISTRY
Patsy de Lora
The City of Cape Town Cancer Registry - a
Population-Based Cancer Registry (PBCR),
was established in 2003 under the
auspices of CANSA, in collaboration with
the Medical Research Council (MRC);
University of Cape Town (UCT); GVI
Oncology and the International Agency for
Research on Cancer (IARC).
The primary function of the PBCR is to
keep a register of all cancer cases
reported in the city of Cape Town. Personal
particulars of cancer patients as well as
clinical and pathological characteristics of
the cancers are collected systematically
and continuously from various cancer data
sources and documented using a
specialised computer programme
developed by IARC.
The information collected for this registry
will help CANSA and the Government to
track trends in the incidence of cancers
specific to this locality as a strategy for
cancer surveillance. This would include
links between cancer trends; lifestyle;
environment and other causative factors
that may arise and will provide significant
input for the planning of programmes and
interventions, identification of partners and
monitoring and evaluation of outcomes.
With the data we are currently receiving
from the National Cancer Registry (NCR)
such surveillance is not possible, although
this approach has been international best
practice for years. The reason for this is that
the data collection and reporting by
the NCR is limited and compromised. The
Population-Based Registry System of data
collection is most appropriate for South
Africa with its varied population groups and
their lifestyles that present different disease
incidence and trends.
The project will be fully implemented
along the strict and thorough guidelines
on confidentiality of the World Health
Organisation (WHO). These include the
collection of data; the storing of data and
issuing of information, to name but a few.
Information captured as reports from the
Registry is anonymous.
Having previously used a labour intensive
approach to data capture that has proven
to be unsustainable, the Registry is
now embarking on a systems approach
whereby data sources submit information
electronically to the Registry in a predetermined format.
This pilot project has great significance as
it will herald a new level in public health
practice in South Africa and will enable
CANSA to produce the work that the
public expects.
TOTSIENS
DAMES BENUT BORSGESONDHEIDSMAANDKLINIEKE
AAN 'N
STAATMAKER
Vrydag, 22 Julie was 'n hartseerdag vir
KANSA Boland wat totsiens moes sê
aan Tannie Alta Bosenberg wat na
bykans 25 jaar se diens aan KANSA
afgetree het om by haar kinders en
kleinkinders te gaan bly. Tannie Alta
Tannie Seittie Roothman (KANSA
Koördineerder: Pasiëntesorg en
Gesondheidsbevordering);
Sr. Jeanne Olivier en Hema Shaw
(Gesondheidsbevorderingskoördineerders, Boland); Tannie Alta
en Tannie Madeline Naudé
(afgetrede KANSA-vrywillger).
In Oktober was dit behoorlik 'n geskarrel in
die Boland om 19 borsondersoekklinieke
in Stellenbosch en 10 in die Drakenstein
Munisipale areas te reël. Vrywilligers
het verpleegkundiges gewerf en
ondersoeklokale gereël. By Stellenbosch
Universiteit is daar by 10 koshuise
borsondersoeke gedoen en altesaam 234
studente het van dié geleentheid gebruik
gemaak. By Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic het
26 dames ondersoeke laat doen en by
Paarl Medi-Clinic is 20 van die 83 dames
wat ondersoek is, vir verdere ondersoeke
verwys. Vrywilligers was byderhand by die
klinieke om borskankerpamflette uit te
deel en vrae te beantwoord.

DECEMBER 2005
THE ART OF A CANSA AUCTION
In August 2005 an auction of artworks
donated by 34 South African artists was
held at the Groenrivier Function Centre in
the picturesque Riebeeck Valley in aid of
CANSA.
Artist Lindy du Toit and her husband - both
CANSA patients - wanted to give
something back to the organisation. Sadly
George du Toit passed away before
Lindy's brainchild became a reality, but
fond memories of him helped her focus on
the task at hand.
The splendid auction team assisted by
Lindy and CANSA Project Facilitator Liezne
Kleinbooi, organised the entire event that
was attended by people from the Valley
and Capetonians who were able to be part
of the Shiraz and Art Weekend that was
held at the same time.
75 of the 80 donated artworks were
sold and included work by Vernon Swart;
Basil Friedlander; Norman Catherine;
Father Frans Claerhout; Christo Coetzee;
Larry Scully; Chris Spies; Nicolaas Maritz
and Larry Norton. A nude by Vernon Swart
fetched the highest bid of R3 400.
At the start of the project we set ourselves
a modest target of R15 000 but thanks to
the overwhelming response from the
artists with their generous donations, we
were able to give art lovers real value for
money and raised an 'artful' R30 000.
CANSA West Coast is most grateful to
everyone involved with the project and
extends its sincere thanks to all
concerned.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR
Each year Spring brings new beginnings,
renewed hope and flowers in bloom.
The Sunflower Support Group in George
celebrated this uplifting seasonal
happening somewhat differently this year.
This CANSA support group of volunteers
under the guidance of Rita Marx was
established specifically to help
cancer patients receiving treatment
at George Hospital.
These 'Sunflowers' usually serve cancer
patients from far and wide with a cup of
tea or coffee and sandwiches whilst they
are at George Hospital for treatment.
On Spring Day Rita and her team filled the
oncology ward with beautiful flowers and
treated patients to assorted cakes and
tarts - all donated by CANSA volunteers -
so that if only for a short while, they could
forget about their worries and delight in the
simple things that a Spring Day brings.
Hillary Bruinders het in Oktober
by die Weskusspan aangesluit
as Gesondheidsbevorderingskoördineerder. Sy was voorheen
verbonde aan Kindersorg op
Stellenbosch.
Hanli van Zyl van die Vredendalkantoor is druk besig met reëlings vir
haar dogter se troue in Desember.
