BIENVENIDOS

our small communities and celebrate our
oneness in Christ. Take a little time to get to know the folks

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
CHANGE IS COMING
Advent is a time to prepare for the Second Coming of Christ
and to prepare for Christmas. While Christmas is barely a
month away, the Second Coming has no fixed date. Regardless,
we need to prepare so that at any day or hour we are ready.
There is a third reason to prepare this Advent. The Vatican
has recently approved a new English translation of the Mass
which will take effect in Advent 2011. The new translation is a
more faithful rendition of the approved Latin text. While a few
may not be happy with this development, others will certainly
be delighted with the more elegant and conducive-to-chanting
language. Regardless, we need to prepare so that when the
appointed date comes, a year from now, we will be ready.
There will be changes in the prayers and in responses. Here
are two examples: in the Creed, the new form will start with
“We believe” instead of “I believe.” The response to the greeting “The Lord be with you” will be, “And with your spirit” instead of “And also with you” which we have now. We will need
to familiarize ourselves with the new texts for the old Mass
prayers and responses that we ably recite from memory would
not work anymore. That is the reason for this one-year preparation.
That being said, the preparation is not solely on text familiarization but on an over-all catechesis of the Mass. We need to
be reminded again of the centrality of the Eucharist, the
“source and summit of Christian life,” as the Second Vatican
Council taught. The Mass is still for us Catholics the place
where we can meet God in a most profound way.
The catechesis takes the form of presenting the structure of
the Mass and in explaining the different parts which will be
serialized in our parish bulletin starting next issue. So even
though the change is only proper to the Masses in English, we
can all benefit from the catechesis. The more we know what
we are doing and why we do them, the more we appreciate
the Holy Mass.
So let us all welcome this recent development in the Liturgy
and get our hearts and minds ready to embrace the changes in
the Mass for a fuller and more active participation.
Uniting the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception with the Feast of
St. Juan Diego
It was on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception,
Patroness of the Americas and the Unborn, that Our Lady of
Guadalupe first appeared to Juan Diego whose feast is December 9. To bridge these two feasts and to safeguard the sanctity
of human life, the parish is holding a solemn “Vigil for the Nascent of Human Life” from 9 PM, December 8 (Wednesday) to
1AM, December 9 (Thursday). The prayer service consists of
exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, 20 decades of the Rosary, prayer to St. Michael, silent prayer and
Marian hymns. Everyone is invited.
Fr. Michael B. Brillantes
He
invitados.

our Latino, Filipino and other communities from our Archdiocese of San Francisco and from other places enjoy honoring
her by participating in a pilgrimage organized by the Guadalupana Crusade. This pilgrimage is now in its 17th year here.
Everyone is invited to join in this Special Event on Saturday,
December 11th, 2010. It consists of walking 12 miles departing
from All Souls Church in South San Francisco at 6:00 a.m. ending at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Solemn Mass follows at 2:00 pm.
