Walk for Wishes
The 9th Annual Walk for Wishes took place this year with
a start and finish at the Turner Field Grand Entry Plaza in
Atlanta. This new location for our signature fundraiser helped
to bring nearly 2,000 walkers together to complete the two
mile course. Walk Chairman, John J. Inhouse, III, along with
Wish Kid Ambassadors Shuron, Jayden and Gracie led
corporate and community team walkers in raising over
$285,000 to help grant the wishes of local children with
life-threatening medical conditions. Key sponsorship support
from Novelis (Presenting Sponsor), Merrill Lynch, MYCOM,
Wilson Parker Homes, AT&T and Accenture helped to make
this event possible.
Many thanks to everyone for your participation and
partnership! YOU helped to make wishes come true!

of Wishes
The 17th Annual Tournament of Wishes, presented by Novelis,
brought nearly 200 golfers to the Golf Club of Georgia in May. This
corporate entertainment outing gave golfers an opportunity to play
on the site of the 2011 PGA Championship while interacting with
past wish recipients. Wish child, Tommy, shared his experience in
having his most heartfelt wish—golf lessons and custom-made golf
clubs—come true. Special thanks to Tournament Chairman, George
Georgiou and Sponsorship Chairman, Robert Watson, for their
support and leadership in raising over $270,000 at this event.

Local Partner Highlight:
This Fall marked the 10th year that Golden Pantry locations have come
together to raise funds for Make-A-Wish® Georgia. Since 2005, for the
months of October through January, Golden Pantry’s Season of Wishes
Campaign remains in full swing, helping to raise money and awareness
for Make-A-Wish. By selling paper stars to customers and collecting
spare change at all 45 locations across the state, this signature
fundraiser brought in over $20,000 this year. Since the initial campaign
ten years ago, the convenience store chain has raised over $136,000
to help grant wishes for local children with life-threatening
medical conditions!

also hosted wish celebrations for wish families over the years. In 2011,
Zaxby’s embarked on its first company-wide sponsorship program and

ANNUAL AWARDS
Each year, Make-A-Wish® Georgia honors a select group of individuals and/or companies who exemplify commitment to the mission of Make-A-Wish. We are incredibly
excited to honor these outstanding leaders and want to shine a spotlight on them to recognize their incredible commitment to our wish kids. The extraordinary dedication
of these award winners can inspire others to step up and join them in making a life-changing difference for children and families right here in Georgia. This year, award
recipients were honored at the inaugural Wish Ball Patron Party, which was hosted at the Buckhead home of Susan and Jonathan Been.

The Power of a Wish Award is
presented to an individual or group
that has exhibited outstanding
leadership over an extended period
of time to help Make-A-Wish® Georgia
expand its ability to deliver its mission
of granting wishes to children with
life-threatening medical conditions.
This year, Jay McCann, Partner and
Co-founder of J. Christopher’s
Restaurants, is the recipient of this
award. Since 2009, J. Christopher’s
restaurants have participated in an
annual fundraiser benefiting
Make-A-Wish, raising over $80,000.
Their commitment to the Make-A-Wish
mission has been phenomenal as
they continue to promote
opportunities for their patrons and
employees to become engaged
with our organization.
The Debbie Tillman Award was
created in honor of Debbie Tillman, an
incredible leader, who, through tireless
efforts, helped to launch Make-A-Wish
Georgia in 1995 and served as the
organization’s first Board Chairperson.
This award is presented to an
outstanding member of the Board of
Directors, as voted on by the staff of
Make-A-Wish Georgia. Ned Allen is the
recipient of the award this year. Ned
has served on the Board of Directors
for three years, during which time he
has provided immeasurable counsel,
been a significant financial contributor
and served as a liaison and advocate
between the local and national offices
of the Make-A-Wish organization.
The Hope, Strength and Joy Award is
presented to an outstanding volunteer
who has helped to deliver hope
through granting wishes, strength
through their fundraising initiatives,
and joy through their commitment
to the mission of the organization.
This year, The Founding and Current
W.I.S.H. Society Board Members
are the recipients of the award.
The W.I.S.H. Society is the women’s
philanthropic leadership council of
Make-A-Wish Georgia. With their name
representing an acronym for Women
Inspiring Strength and Hope, the
recipient group of this award includes
Jane Hennessy, Jennifer Helfman,
Cathy Lefar, Hilary Hill, Carol Martens
and Leslie Flynn. Through their
dedication and passion for our mission,
these female leaders have chartered
the path for women throughout our
state to engage with Make-A-Wish in
meaningful ways through fundraising,
wish-granting and relationship building.
The William Blake Kuller “Indomitable
Spirit” Award was established in honor
of wish child, Blake Kuller. This award
is intended to honor an individual
who embodies the essence of an
“indomitable” spirit and possesses
the qualities of persistence, bravery,
compassion, integrity, dedication and
humor, as Blake did. Tracy Howk,
a licensed clinical social worker
with the Aflac Cancer Center of
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is the
recipient of this award this year. Her
amazing work connecting children
with our mission has earned her this
recognition. She serves as one of our
top referral sources in the state of
Georgia, assisting our organization in
achieving our vision of granting the
wish of every eligible child.

The W.I.S.H. Society is a Make-A-Wish® Georgia initiative
targeted at inspiring women in our community to partner
with our organization to make a difference in the lives of
local children who have been diagnosed with progressive,
malignant or degenerative diseases. This powerful leadership
network of women inspired to change lives was launched in
metro Atlanta in 2012, and has since developed a signature
annual fundraiser, An Evening of Hearts and Wishes, that has
been a tremendous success. The group has also sparked

Wishes Can’t Wait
Campaign Success!
At the close of FY 2012, Make-A-Wish® Georgia formally
launched the Wishes Can’t Wait Campaign, a special
fundraising campaign established to address accumulated
wishes and reduce the lengthy wait time for our wish children.
An increased referral rate and rising wish costs, coupled with
a weakened economy for several years created a ‘perfect
storm’ during which wish requests exceeded resources.
These circumstances resulted in over 650 children who would
have had to wait up to two years for their wishes to come
true. Make-A-Wish Georgia sought to not only accelerate our
annual fundraising revenue, but also successfully complete
this campaign in order to have the capability to fund both
the currently delayed wishes and the ongoing stream of wish
referrals moving forward.
Chase, age 14
respiratory condition
I wish to go on a Hawaiian cruise!
We are so grateful to the generous donors who contributed to
this campaign, and who have helped us achieve the following
successes!
We raised over $1.1 Million to help accelerate our wish
granting efforts within the state.
100% of Georgia wish children were removed from the
waiting list and are now going through the standard
wish granting cycle.
Carson, age 12
brain tumor
I wish to go to Australia!
The average time for a wish to be completed was reduced
from up to two years, to an average of 7-9 months.*
We were able to grant nearly twice as many wishes in
the state of Georgia this year than in the prior year.
*This falls within our national guidelines.

IMPACT
Wishes By The Numbers
A wish come true helps children feel stronger, more energetic, and more willing and able to battle their life-threatening medical
conditions. For many of them, it marks a turning point in their fight against their illnesses. For their doctors, nurses and other
health professionals, the wish experience works in concert with medicine to make their patients feel better, emotionally and
even physically. Since the start of our organization, we have witnessed that a wish can bring hope, strength and joy to a family.
After completing the final phase of our National Wish Impact Study, we have the numbers to prove it.

CORPORATE GIVING
W.I.S.H. Society
Adopt-A-Wish

The W.I.S.H. Society inspires women in our community
to partner with Make-A-Wish to make a difference in
the lives of local children who have been diagnosed
with progressive, malignant, or degenerative diseases.
To learn more about this exciting new initiative and join
with other dedicated women to help make a meaningful
difference in the lives of the children and families we
serve, please call 888-517-9474 x50.
You can create more heartwarming stories for children
with life-threatening medical conditions through the
Adopt-A-Wish program. This giving option allows
donors to fund a single wish experience in its entirety.
The average cost of granting a wish is $8000, a small
price to pay for the happiness of a child whose life
consists of daily medical challenges. Please call
888-517-9474 x43 for more information.

Makenzie had the best time racing
her pint-sized racecar!
Makenzie couldn’t stop
smiling all day!
FROM THE COVER
Makenzie’s
Wish Story
Four-year-old Makenzie is battling acute lymphoid leukemia
(ALL), a fast-growing cancer of a type of white blood cells
called lymphocytes, that crowds out bone marrow. This
prevents the body from making the normal red blood cells,
white blood cells, and platelets that your body needs. Despite
this being the most common type of leukemia in children, the
cause of ALL remains unknown.
When Makenzie learned that she would be able to receive a
wish experience from Make-A-Wish Georgia, she knew right
away what she wanted. Her sense of adventure and love for
excitement led Makenzie to wish to be a racecar driver! Skip
Barber Racing School, one of the largest racing schools in the
world, and Zaxby’s Restaurant partnered with Make-A-Wish to
help bring her wish to life.
Upon arriving at Skip Barber Racing School, Makenzie
received her very own driving suit and a customized pink
helmet. She and her family received an exclusive tour of the
facility, where they learned about the racecars, racetracks and
all that Makenzie would be able to participate in during her
wish experience. The Skip Barber Racing School crew
custom-made a race track for Makenzie’s pint-sized race car,
which she utilized for her individual race and drag racing
experience. After an adrenaline-filled day, the Braselton
Zaxby’s location provided meals for the family and crew.
Zaxby’s Kidz Club mascot, LZ, was also in attendance to help
entertain the family during Makenzie’s memorable day.
Makenzie and her
family will always
remember her
amazing racecar
driving experience!
Make-A-Wish was thrilled to be able to provide Makenzie and
her family with this experience, which created memories that
they will cherish forever.
Photos credited to Skip Barber Racing School.
Makenzie and her pit
crew won the race!
