“Winter Flower Medicine”

1. Save your poinsettia in the house to plant outdoors in the spring.
a. Make sure your plant has lots of light. Inside, plants need about 10 hours of light
on each leaf surface. West or south exposure is generally the best light available.
b. Leave it in the pot, and put it in the ground for better removal next fall when
bringing your plant back inside.
c. Trim back the foliage when planting outside. Trim again in the fall when
bringing your poinsettia back inside.
2. Bring home flowers for yourself.
a. Cut off about an inch of stem length to get the best draft. Take all leaves off
below the water line, keeping some leaves on the top as they help to pull
water up the stem.
b. Put flowers in a very clean vase with a few drops of dish soap. This keeps the
bacteria down in the water which is the main cause of flowers not lasting.
c. Keep flowers away from fruit to avoid ethylene gas which shortens their life.
d. Change the water at least every other day with a fresh cut on the bottom
of the stems.
e. Keep your flowers near lots of light. However, flowers don’t like hot spots
like the kitchen or other heat sources.
f. Use warm water when watering, unless the flower grows in cold weather
(tulips, iris, etc.), then use cold water.

10. Click on every link you get in e-mail and
instant messages, whether you know who
the messages are from or not.
9. Download lots of free applications over file sharing networks like
“Bit Torrent” and “Lime Wire”. The bad guys often put infected codes
on these networks.
8. Don’t use anti-spyware software. The Identity Theft Research Center calls
identity theft America’s fastest growing crime and predicts a boom year for identity thieves in
the coming year.
7. Use Internet Explorer as your default browser, rather than a more secure browser like
Firefox. Internet Explorer has been known to have security issues.
6. Don’t use the Firefox No Script add-on. The No Script add on (for Firefox and Flock) blocks
many of the malicious JavaScript and Flash programs on the Internet.
5. Don’t use a firewall.
4. Don’t use anti-virus software on your computer. The number of malicious programs on the
Internet tripled between 2007 and 2008 to a record 1.5 million. There are plenty of great
anti-virus programs out there like F-Secure, Trend Micro, Kaspersky Labs, Symantec, and
the free AVG.
3. Don’t update your anti-virus software. A recent statistic showed that over 50% of the top 10
infecting viruses reported to Symantec were new within the last 30 days.
2. Never upgrade your software applications. QuickTime, Acrobat Reader, Java, and about
every other software application has security issues identified on a regular basis.

1. Don’t apply Microsoft patches (Updates) to your computer. It’s well worth the trouble to
download these important updates.

Internet safety, and to keep your computer from becoming just another zombie (or bot) under
some hacker’s control.
