As they transition into college life and the adult world, some
of our local high school graduates open up to share their high
school experiences as well as what their future plans hold.
KAITLYN OLDENBURG
Linden grad
The trip costs around $12,000. Oldenburg has raised about
$3,000 from support from family, friends and the community.
“Family and friends have donated, the community has donated.
I’m having a garage sale and all the funds are going toward the
trip, along with the money from my open house,” Oldenburg said.
Finishing high school was bittersweet, she said. “You leave
all your friends behind and I’m literally leaving the country.
It’s going to be a lot, doing the open house and graduating.”
She was a flag girl in marching band. While in school, Oldenburg went to Haiti twice on mission trips, once
her sophomore year and again this past
spring break.
“It was eye-opening seeing a
different culture besides Linden. Eye-opening and lifechanging,” Oldenburg
said. After her ninemonth mission trip,
Oldenburg plans on
going to college to
become a nurse.
“If I had a dollar for every time
someone asked me about what I
was doing after high school,
I’d have a million dollars,”
said Kaitlyn Oldenburg,
18, senior at Linden
High School who’s
enjoying her first

Along with school, he was involved in marching band from
eighth- to 12th-grade, playing the tenor saxophone and acting as
drum major his junior and senior year. Walker was involved in
National Honor Society, Key Club, his church youth group, and
has coordinated his school’s American Red Cross Blood Drive.
Before going to college, Walker plans on going to Guatemala
for a week this summer to work in an orphanage. “It’ll be cool
to be a part of a different culture and something bigger than
me,” Walker said.

Many people have plans to travel after they finish school.
However, Nadine Bahlqe, 17, is graduating from Lake Fenton
High School this spring and has already been to Spain, Italy,
France, London, China, South Korea, India, Japan, Singapore,
Germany, and Paris.
“I definitely enjoyed high school. People say it’s the ‘best
four years of your life’ but it’s really not. It was fun,” Bahlqe
said. She will attend Florida State University going into the
medical field to become at Veterinarian.
Bahlqe chose Florida State University because it’s “basically
Michigan State but with better weather.” People were friendly
when she visited back in November, she said. After college and
graduate school, Bahlqe wants to settle down south, mainly
because of the weather.
“Hopefully, if everything goes right, I want to open my own
veterinarian practice in Georgia,” Bahlqe said.
Bahlqe has also been to school in Japan, where she attended
an international school for first- through third-grade. The biggest cultural difference was the attendance policy. Bahlqe’s
school in Japan didn’t enforce attendance because they wanted
to encourage kids to travel.
Bahlqe’s family is originally from Germany and she goes to
visit every year. The main cultural difference between Germany
and the U.S. is “things that are insulting here would be normal
there,” Bahlqe said. She didn’t like Paris because the people
were rude and it was dirty, but she loved Spain.
Traveling has made her more open-minded than her peers.
“They don’t want to go see Asia and I think that’s weird,”
Bahlqe said, adding that she’ll miss high school for “the first
two weeks of college, but not really.”
