SANDIEGO–February18,2016–SanDiegoCityCollege(SDCC)ispleasedtoannouncethatthe
213thTwo-YearCollegeChemistryConsortium(2YC3)conferencewilltakeplaceoncampuson
March11and12,2016.Thethemeoftheevent,“TeachingChemistryThroughitsSocialImpacts,”
complementsCityCollege’sfocusonsocialjustice.
2YC3isanationalgroupofchemistryeducatorsprimarilyfromcommunitycollegesthatmeetsquarterly
toenhancestudentlearningthroughprofessionaldevelopment.From60-110communitycollege
professionalsareexpectedtoattendtheconferenceatSDCC.
“Weareexcitedtohostthisconferenceformanyreasons,especiallythatitgivesustheopportunityto
engageinanationalexchangeofideasaboutcommunitycollegechemistryrighthereinSanDiego,”said
RobertKojima,Ph.D.,assistantprofessorofchemistryandthelocalarrangementschairforthe
conference.“Thefactthatitprovidesuswithanopportunitytoshowcaseournewstate-of-the-art
sciencebuildingwithmodernlabsisniceaswell.”
KojimanotedthathostingtheconferencealsoprovidesSDCCchemistryprofessorswiththechanceto
learnaboutthegreatertrendsoccurringinthechemistryworld,andexposethenationaldiscourseto
thelocalcommunity.Inaddition,participantswillhavetheuniqueopportunitytohelpshapethefuture
ofchemistrycurriculaattwo-yearcolleges.
Followingthe2YC3ConferenceatCityCollege,theAmericanChemicalSociety(ACS)willholditsannual
conferenceattheSanDiegoConventionCenterMarch13-17,withanexpectedattendanceofaround
14,000.2YC3isaffiliatedwiththeACS’sDivisionofChemistryEducation,thusmanyattendeeswillbe
goingtobothconferences.
“Wearelookingforwardtowelcomingchemistryeducatorsfromacrossthecountrytoourcampus,”
saidAnthonyBeebe,presidentofSDCC.“Ourchemistrygroupispleasedtohavetheopportunityto
collaboratewithcolleaguesonbestpracticesinadvancingthechemistrycurriculum.”
