National Library Week
is April 10-16. The
library will be holding a
food drive during this
week. Please consider
donating
nonperishable food items or
personal care products.
April 12 is National
Library Workers’ Day,
so don’t forget to show
the library staff your
appreciation for all they
do. Have you lost your
library card? You can
replace it free of charge
on April 13. Please
bring your photo id and
proof of address.
April is National Poetry
Month. The library is
holding a meeting for
any patrons interested in
joining a contemporary
poetry book club on
April 20 at 7pm. April 28
is Great Poetry Reading
Day. The library is partnering with UND to offer
two poetry-related events
to our patrons. There
will be a poetry workshop at 4pm. Space is
limited, so please register at the Reference desk
if you would like to attend. We will also have a
poetry reading at 7pm.

We’ve taken your suggestions and
ordered some new magazines. We
will soon begin to receive Knitting Today, Living Without, Scrapbooks Etc.,
Threads, and Yoga Journal. While
some of the titles are fairly selfexplanatory, others are not.

Teens at the Grand Forks Public
Library celebrated Teen Tech
Week by taking part in Framed,
a digital photo contest. Contestants used their imagination to
illustrate how nature and technology can come together. Our
first place winner was Rachel
Perry with a photo titled, Communication Between Technology
& Nature. Second place went to
Andrew Godon with his photo,
Perfect Start to a Fishing Day and
winning third place was Angela
Vrolyk with a photo titled,
Unchanging Love. The Friends of
the Grand Forks Library contributed the prizes, two Flip cameras
and an iTunes card. The winning photos are on display in the
library.

Several Grand Forks area teens
will be attired in new dresses at
their proms this spring courtesy
of the Grand Forks Public
Library’s An Enchanted Exchange, a prom dress swap. The
library collected dresses during
February and early March and
successfully obtained 56 gowns.
Girls were invited for a four hour
event and were able to try on
dresses, snack on food, and win
prizes. Overall, fourteen area
businesses contributed coupons
for meals, flowers, tanning, nails,
hair, henna tattoos, and massages. K-Mart graciously allowed us
to borrow a clothing rack for the

grades 7-12. If you want to perform your original poems for a
chance to win a prize, please register at the Reference desk.
Judges will be chosen at random
from the audience, so bring your
own audience. If you don’t want
to perform, you can still come
and cheer for your favorite poet.

In My Abandonment by
Peter Rock (F Rock),
Caroline lives in Forest
Park, a nature preserve, with her father. They live off of
the land, off of the
grid, in a little makeshift house
hidden from view by pine tree
branches. Caroline doesn't realize
how strange her life is.
She
doesn't go to school, doesn't have
friends her own age, and doesn't
know how illegally she and her
father are living. Until one day, a
runner sees Caroline high in the
trees and reports it to the police. Within a week, their home
is invaded by strange men with
strange dogs who are intent upon
separating Caroline and her father from each other and from
their home in nature. I was mesmerized by Peter Rock's flowing,
poetic narrative about Caroline, a
haunting girl who "in the midst of
a crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude."
