The Montessori School of Raleigh
2013-2014 Annual Report
Mission Statement
The Montessori School of Raleigh is the Triangle’s modern embodiment and
mindful practice of the time-proven Montessori philosophy, developing agile
thinkers, poised communicators and gracious collaborators—engineers of
authentic and fulfilling lives.
Dear MSR Families...
The past year was a fantastic one for MSR, and we could not be more pleased to be entering our third year with
Nancy Errichetti as our Head of School. In her very first year, our Board engaged in a process we called “Design
Thinking”. Over 40 representatives of our faculty, staff and parent communities joined with the Board over four
months to clarify our school’s long-term strategic vision and to identify the work of the next 2-3 years that would
move us towards that vision. Now, after two years and a tremendous amount of work by our faculty and staff, we
can proudly say that the vast majority of our stated goals and objectives have been accomplished. As a result, we
have a lot to celebrate as a community: a complete scope and sequence for and benchmarking of our Montessori
curriculum, a fantastic new professional development tool called Folio, an exciting new marketing strategy, countless
enhancements to our program, and the construction of wonderful new facilities including a performance stage and
a brand new soccer field. In the coming year, the focus of our faculty and staff will be on “settling in” with the new
systems and tools that have been implemented, using them to ensure MSR is delivering on its Mission and Promise Statement as one of the
very finest Montessori schools in the nation.
BJ Stolz, President, Board of Trustees
Happy Birthday, MSR! In 2013-2014, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary in spectacular fashion. Our
community came together at our Spring Event, “There is No Place Like MSR,” and through Fund A Need
and other generous donations raised $62,335 to help build our new stage. That amount, coupled with other
generous donations from our families and monies allocated by MSR’s Board of Trustees, helped to fund the
construction of our new soccer field on the Andrews Chapel Campus and our new stage on the Lead Mine
Campus. The Spring Event also raised $46,324 towards Professional Development Endowment to support our
faculty and staff on their continued learning journey. Role modeling a love of learning for our students is a
high priority at MSR, and we are so grateful to our families who strongly support our wonderful school.
Nancy B. Errichetti, Head of School
There is a palpable sense of community and belonging at MSR. Throughout last year, I saw happy parents
engaging with fellow parents on the sidewalks, volunteering in classrooms and making the magic happen for
our large events, too. We had the “best ever” Fall Festival, Festival of the Arts and Grandparents and Special
Friends Day due, in part, to record numbers of families participating in these events. I believe that families at
MSR share a common goal. We are united in our desire to raise independent children who are able to think
critically, who are intrinsically motivated and who see all that is possible in the world. We come together to
celebrate the great community at MSR that makes it so.
Candace Covington-Olander, Secretary, Board of Trustees

I am your alumni
Congratulations on your 40th Anniversary Celebration! How proud you can be of your accomplishments!
Nostalgia takes me back to those early beginnings. The vision, the challenges, and the joy when we
witnessed those first students gain confidence, integrity, and the choice to care for and help one another
while having fun. Watching them blossom while they absorbed Montessori teaching through play was pure
joy. What a blessing for them to be a part of the first Montessori School of Raleigh.
Those extraordinary teachers went far beyond the requirements to provide
unforgettable learning opportunities for every child. All of this served to
provide a superior background for Kimberly’s growth and development
through high school and college. She excelled in both academics and the
performing arts because of those early beginnings.
Jean Thornton Johnson
After ten years as a successful performer in New York and Florida,
motherhood helped her choose to learn even more about Montessori
teachings. She is certified as a Montessori teacher, however, presently she
Kimberly Thornton Johnson
is using those skills as a Montessori Mom and as the wife of a professor at
Wake Forest University in Winston Salem.
What Kimberly learned at The Montessori School of Raleigh has been a valuable asset and one of the
experiences in life of which she is proudest.
You have accomplished far more than our vision in 1974 foresaw!! Congratulations!! You have earned
that honor!! Be proud!!
Jean Thornton Johnson
Parent and Founder
Kimberly Thornton Johnson (now Scholl) has moved to Winston Salem where her
husband is an Associate Professor at Wake Forest University. Kimberly’s parents, Jean
and Raymond Johnson, were one of MSR’s founding families, with Kimberly in the
school’s very first class in 1974. Kimberly enjoyed a successful career in the performing
arts in New York and Florida, and she is also a certified Montessori teacher. She and
Mark have a 10-year old son, Wyatt.
Johanna Stark Goodman received her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Georgia
Institute of Technology. Johanna, the daughter of Marion (MSR Elementary Resource
since 2002) and Hartmut Stark, graduated from the MSR Middle School in 2002. At
MSR she was in UE-1 with Donna Boyd, and in the Middle School charter class with
Mary Marino. Johanna married David Goodman, an architect, in 2013 and they reside
in Atlanta. She has two MSR Alumni brothers: Simon, who graduated from UNCCharlotte and works in Michigan for IAV Automotive Engineering; and Alexander, who
will graduate from NC State University with a BA in Physics in 2015.

Kimberly Thornton Johnson
Joshua Scott Andrews was recently accepted into North Carolina State
University’s Ph.D. program in Industrial-Organization Psychology. Josh
earned a B.A. in Psychology from NCSU in 2013. He attended MSR from
Children’s House through his 2005 graduation from the Middle School.
Josh is the son of Tanyer (MSR Toddler Encore Directress since 2008)
and Ron Andrews. Joshua’s brother Cole, currently attending Cardinal
Gibbons, also attended MSR from Children’s House through Middle
School.
Kasperi Kapanen, who was in CH 5, was drafted in the first round of the
National Hockey League by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kasperi’s father,
Sami, played for the Carolina Hurricanes and lived in Raleigh with his wife
Petra and their family from 1998-2002. Sami visited CH 5 and delighted
students when he performed tricks with a stick and puck in full hockey
gear. Kasperi played in Finland’s elite league as a teenager, and an NHL
talent scout reported that he “plays a cerebral game with the skills and
speed to allow him to make the proper plays in all situations and make
the players around him better.”
Melissa “Miley” Palahnuk graduated from the inaugural class of
Heritage High School in Wake Forest and will be attending Liberty
University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Upon her high school graduation
last May, Miley visited MSR and presented personal letters to 16 of her
former teachers that touched her life forever.
Joshua Henderson, 15, performed at Carnegie Hall as first violinist in
the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and in the American Protégé
International Concerto Competition winners recital program. Currently
a senior at Andover Phillips Academy in Massachusetts, Joshua is the
son of the much-beloved face and voice of MSR, Stephanie Henderson
(Watson Front Desk), and he has two MSR alum brothers, Jacob and
Luke, who are also gifted violinists. Joshua was a winner in the Arts
Festival of 2009.
Sam Pollan, 21, a senior Environmental Studies major at Dickinson
College, was named a Baird Sustainability Fellow for advancing
sustainability goals through excellence in scholarship, leadership and
service. One of seven students selected for this fellowship, Sam works
as a climate action plan intern at the Center for Sustainability Education,
and for his service project, he will develop a sustainable living guide for
Dickinson employees. The son of Mr. Jim Pollan and Dr. Cheryl Siegel
of Raleigh, Sam has come to define sustainability in a holistic sense
encompassing social, economic, and environmental factors.

FALL FESTIVAL October 2013
The Fall Festival kicked off this year with the Run for the Honey Alumni Fun Run that
earned MSR a $1,500 challenge gift to help re-swarm the beehives at the Middle School.
Krystin Knox, Sarah Steinberg, Colleen Gross and Kathleen Malik planned an exciting
day for everyone, which included face painting, tattoos, tie dye t-shirts, ring toss, lots of
exciting food vendors and, of course, the famous chili contest.
Fifth Annual Miners Golf Tournament October 2013
What a wonderful day it was at the Heritage Golf Club. Congratulations to the first
place team BJ Stolz, Bryan Guesbeck, John Sook and David Ragone; second place
team Mary Toler, James Flanagan, Chad Chalupa and Daniel Davis; and third place
team Jeff Ammons, Paul Averette, Tom Kilpatrick and Rick Saunders. Your support and
participation in this tournament was greatly appreciated!
Grandparents & Special Friends Day May 2014
Grandparents and special friends began the day witnessing the unveiling of a yearlong art project that our students worked on with world renown artist and MSR
parent James “Dalek” Marshall. They spent time with their students, observing
work cycles and celebrating all their hard work. We are so grateful to everyone
who made this event possible and helped to create wonderful memories for our
students, parents, grandparents and guests.

This year was a tremendous year for MSR as our community worked together to make two dream projects a
reality. There was a definite need for both our athletic and fine arts programs to continue to grow as we needed a
competitive level soccer field and a premiere style stage. The plans were initially revealed at the State of the School
meeting and enthusiastically received. When called upon, our community rose to the challenge to help us fund
these projects. Everyone dug deep and delivered like never before with the fund-a-need auction at the Gala and
other generous donations, raising $62,335 for the stage. Along with grading work donated by the Turner family, the
school contributed funds for the soccer field and our dreams finally became a reality. Both facilities are beautiful
and operational. We are so grateful for the generosity of our community and their dedication to making The
Montessori School of Raleigh the best place for our children and for children yet to come.

Special thanks to MSR Scholarship Benefactors
Anthony Rossi (and the Keown and Conti Families)
The Toni Conti Scholarship for Montessori Education
Established in 2008, this $1,000 scholarship is awarded to one rising 9th year student who demonstrates a passion for serving others both in
his or her immediate community and the larger community beyond our school. Toni Conti (father of Michelle Keown, MSR Parent and former
MSR Faculty) was an avid believer in a Montessori education for shaping independent, lifelong learners. When he passed away, his godson
Anthony Rossi created The Conti Scholarship as a legacy to honor him by helping students attend The Montessori School of Raleigh for their
capstone year.
The Doshi Family (Alumni Parent Usha Doshi, and Alumni Deepti, Neeti & Viraj)
The Doshi Family Scholarship for Leadership in Community Service
Established in 2012, this $1,000 scholarship is awarded to one rising 7th year student. Designed to encourage Upper Elementary students
to enhance and advance their creativity, scope and awareness of community service needs and opportunities and to recognize students for
achievement in these areas as they advance to the MSR Middle School, The Doshi Family Scholarship was created by three MSR alumni
siblings who continue to be inspired by and grateful for their MSR education, and is in honor of their mother, Dr. Usha Doshi.
✪ Gifts of $1,000 and above include membership in The Leadership Circle.

I am a promise
The Montessori School of Raleigh is the Triangle’s modern embodiment
and mindful practice of the time-proven Montessori philosophy for toddler
through ninth grade students.
Through self-directed engagement with MSR’s embracing culture,
inherently interdisciplinary curriculum, and purposefully prepared
environments, students fully inhabit the study of their personal
fascinations.
Implicitly and explicitly guided by expert teachers toward individual
mastery of evolving social, emotional, and academic lessons, they learn
the habits of mind that lead to deep focus, discernment, understanding,
and maturity from their earliest years.
MSR’s multi-age classroom experiences inspire teachers and students
to alternately act as instructor and pupil, leader and follower, ultimately
cultivating students’ ownership of their distinct self-worth and
appreciation of the inherent worth of others.
From this effective and encompassing preparation, Montessori School
of Raleigh graduates advance with serene self-assurance to their next
schools and into adulthood as agile thinkers, poised communicators, and
gracious collaborators— docents of their own learning and engineers of
authentic and fulfilling lives.
