J. Mr. Hill’s family was looking
forward to the picnic. The
children’s eyes danced as they
planned for the next day. Next
morning the car was loaded and
off they went! Mr Hill’s eyes were
on the road but Mrs Hill’s attention
was on the group of children sitting
at the back. The girls’ giggles gave
her the indication that something
was up. A complaint from the boys’
group threw some light on the
matter. The boys’ water bottles had
been hidden by the girls.

Robin Hood Meets Frair Tuck
One day Robin Hood was about to
cross a forest stream. He saw a very
fat man on the opposite side of the
stream. Robin could see from his
clothes that he was a friar. His head
was almost bald and just a narrow
fringe of hair circled his shiny head.
“Good morning,” said Robin.
“I want to cross the stream.”
“Then cross it, as I did,” said the
friar. “Wade across it.”
“I don‘t think I can do that,”
replied Robin.
”Well, then fly across,” said the
friar humorously.
Robin took out his bow and aimed
an arrow at the friar.
“My friend carry me across the
stream,” ordered Robin.
TH–Learning Grammar & Composition–5
“Is that the way you usually ask
for a favour? Why didn’t you ask
me in a polite manner?” asked the
friar. He stood up, removed his
sword and kept it on the bank, and
then waded up to Robin.
“Climb on my back,” he told
Robin.
Robin climbed on his back and
the friar waded slowly across the
stream.
As soon as they reached the bank,
the friar picked up his sword and
pointed it at Robin.
“Now it is my turn,” he said.
“You take me across the stream.”
Robin could not point his arrow
at the friar and he had to carry him
across! The friar was very heavy
and Robin had great difficulty
carrying him across.
When they reached the shore,
this time Robin forced the friar to
take him across! While carrying
Robin, the friar slipped and both
fell in the stream. This made them
angry and they started fighting
with their fists. After a few minutes
they both stopped. They realised it
was quite silly to fight like this!
“You are a brave man,” said
Robin. ”Let us be friends.”
Since then Friar Tuck (that was his
name) became a member of Robin
Hood‘s gang.
A.1. Robin Hood was about to
cross a forest stream.
2. Robin Hood took his bow
and aimed an arrow at the
friar and ordered him to
carry him across the stream.
15
3. The friar asked Robin Hood
if that was the way that he
asked for a favour.
4. The reasons why Robin Hood
and the friar decided to be
friends are as follows:
Firstly, both realised that it
was quite silly to fight like
that.
Secondly, Robin Hood found
him to be a brave man. Hence
he could join Robin Hood’s
gang.
Listening Comprehension-2
Yosaku and The Old Man
A young man, named Yosaku, lived
in a small village in Japan. He came
to know about a big fair to be held
in the next town. He packed his
bag with beautiful hand fans and
left for the fair. Night fell before
he reached the town and he began
to feel weary and hungry. Then he
saw a cottage on the roadside with
lights shining inside. He knocked
at the door and pushed it slightly
open. Inside he saw a very old man
with a long white beard.
The old man asked Yosaku to
come in. A chair in the kitchen
moved on its own towards the fire.
The old man invited Yosaku to sit
on it.
“Now,” said the old man,
“Yosaku and I will have our
dinner.”
Immediately, the things began
to move in the kitchen on their
own. A knife jumped up and cut
the meat lying in a dish. A pot
16
came out from the cupboard and
the meat dropped in it. A jug of
water rose up and the meat and the
potatoes washed themselves in the
jug and went into the pot. A fire lit
up and a pot jumped on to the fire.
Meanwhile a cloth was spread on
the table and two plates were put
with chopsticks laid neatly. Then
the food was served.
”Come,” said the old man, “let
us eat.”
When Yosaku was full, he
thanked the old man.
“Now,” said the old man, “tell
me a story.”
“I have never told a story in my
life,” said Yosaku.
“Well, if you cannot tell a story,
then leave at once,” said the old
man and he pushed poor Yosaku
out.
Poor Yosaku, he collected his
bag and walked out sadly. He
saw a man sitting on the roadside,
roasting a piece of meat on a
burning log.
“Come Yosaku,” said the man,
“you turn this meat on the fire.
Do not burn it.” Handing over the
meat to Yosaku, the man vanished.
“Don‘t let me burn,” suddenly
shouted the piece of meat.
Yosaku was so frightened that he
ran as fast as he could, throwing
the meat in the fire. He found
himself in front of the old man’s
cottage. The old man opened the
door and said, “Welcome back,
come in and rest.”
TH–Learning Grammar & Composition–5
“Oh, I cannot — I cannot tell you
a story,” said Yosaku. “Besides,
I am very frightened.”
“What happened?” asked the old
man. Yosaku told him about the
man on the road who gave a piece
of meat to roast on the fire and then
vanished, how the piece of meat
requested Yosaku not to burn it and
the way Yosaku threw the meat in
the fire and ran for his life.
“Ah, Yosaku,” laughed the old
man, “you have told me a story
after all. Sleep for the rest of the
night.”
Yosaku fell into a deep sleep
in the soft comfortable bed, but
when he woke up in the morning
he found himself on the roadside,
with his bag of fans under his head.
There was no sign of the cottage or
the old man with the long white
beard.
1. Yosaku came to know about a
big fair to be held in the next
town. So he left for the next
town.
2. He stopped at a cottage on
the roadside at night. He
stopped there because night
had fallen and he had begun

3. As soon as the old man said,
“ Osaka and I will have our
dinner,” things began to
move on their own in the
kitchen. A knife jumped
up and cut the meal lying
in a dish. A pot came out
from the cupboard and the

up and a pot jumped on to
the fire. Meanwhile a clothe
was spread on the table and
two plates were put with
chopsticks laid neatly, and
the food was served.
4. Yosaka was pushed out of the
house by the old man for he
denied to tell a story.
5. As Yosaka walked out of the
house, he saw a man sitting
on the roadside, roasting a
piece of meat on a burning
log. The man asked Yosaka to
turn the meat on the fire but
not burn it and handing over
the meat he vanished. Then
suddenly the piece of meat
shouted, “Don’t let me burn!”
Yosaka was so frightened that
he ran as fast as he could,
throwing the meat in the fire.
He found himself in front of
the old man’s cottage. The
old man opened the door and
welcomed him back and also
asked him to take rest.
