Brubacher Excavating, Inc.
Bowmansville, Pennsylvania
Brubacher Excavating offers a full range of
excavating, pipe and utility installation, roadway
construction and general earth moving to
residential developers, municipal and industrial
customers, large commercial contractors, landfills
and golf courses in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
The Challenge
All aspects of Brubacher Excavating’s business are
affected by weather. Rain or cold temperatures
affect their paving and concrete operations.
Excavation projects must be shut down if heavy
rainfall occurs, and sensitive GPS equipment used
in surveying can be damaged by rain. ”We have
10 to 15 trucks hauling asphalt on any given day,”
says Jon Keller, Brubacher Dispatcher. “We don’t
want to load the trucks and have them sit at a job
site, unable to place the material due to rain or cold
temperatures. Plus we don’t want to lose a costly,
time-consuming pour due to unexpected rain.”
In addition, Brubacher Excavating has several
snow removal contracts in the winter months. The
equipment they use is pulled from the field. The
field crews are unable to work while their equipment
is being used for snow removal, so it’s imperative to
know when a storm is coming, how much snowfall is
anticipated, and how long it will last.
WARNINGS
The DTN/Meteorlogix Solution
Brubacher Excavating’s dispatch office utilizes MxVision
WeatherSentry®, DTN/Meteorlogix’ newest generation of
business weather display systems which incorporates the
latest in display technology with nationally regarded forecasts.
MxVision WeatherSentry allows Brubacher Excavating to
schedule daily projects more strategically, avoiding costly
weather-related setbacks. Using the high-resolution, local radar
maps, which are updated every five minutes, and visual storm
tracking, dispatchers can determine when storms will arrive at
each job site.
Concrete and paving is especially vulnerable to rainfall and
temperature conditions. Job site crews are in frequent touch
with the dispatch office when threatening weather is in the
forecast to keep informed of where storms are, where they’re
headed and how intense they’ll be. “A crew can pour up to
2000 feet of concrete curb a day, and it needs to set for an hour
to avoid rain damage,” says Keller. “Crews can pave up to the
last minute if they know when storms will arrive, and not get
caught with blacktop they cannot place.”

Results
“We have about 250 employees on our earth crews, doing site
improvements and utility installation,” adds Keller. “With the
MxVision WeatherSentry radar and storm tracking information,
we can know when to shut down for half an hour for just a
passing shower so we don’t lose the entire day, or when to pack
up because it’s going to last all day. Crews can also prepare
job sites for inclement weather, avoiding erosion and other
problems due to heavy rain. This saves us time and money
because we’re able to button up job sites before storms arrive.”
The Client’s View
“The DTN/Meteorlogix MxVision WeatherSentry has proven very accurate in pinpointing
the time of arrival of storms and rainfall at job locations. When we first got the system, the
DTN/Meteorlogix technician was very helpful in teaching us to read and understand the
information. In addition, the customer service staff is always professional and courteous
when we have questions. In fact, when we have a problem they always follow up with a
phone call to be sure we’ve resolved it.”
