Christmas Pageant, bringing together the Church
School students for the performance. As it is
important for all HTC youth to attend services and
Church School every Sunday, parents are asked that
their child/children attend at least 4 SUNDAY
CHURCH SCHOOL CLASSES between now and
Sunday, December 4, in order to be eligible for one of
the primary roles and/or reading parts. Also, this year
the Church School staff is stressing the importance of
all children attending the full pageant rehearsals to
become familiar with THE SONGS, WHERE TO
STAND, and THE OVERALL PROGRAM.

AHEPA NEWS
The local AHEPA chapter will have the privilege of hosting Supreme President Andrew
Zacharides, Past Supreme President Anthony Zouzounis, and Headquarters Director Basil
Mosssaides on Monday, October 24. The guests will address issues regarding Greece,
Cyprus, Greek American affairs, and the role of AHEPA. All brother AHEPANS, as well as
former members and those interested in becoming members, are invited to join the group
for dinner (Dutch treat) on October 24 at 7:00 pm at Andrea's Restaurant in Metairie. If you

SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON CALENDAR—The next Senior Citizens Luncheon is November
10. Once again, seniors, you are invited to mark your calendar and make plans to attend
this luncheon, as well as those scheduled on December 6, January 19, and February 9.
GARAGE SALE—Philoptochos expresses sincere thanks to everyone that supported the
recent Garage Sale fundraiser. Chairperson Elaine Nugent is most grateful to those, who
brought garage sale items, and to all Philoptochos members, who helped with the set up
process, as well as worked at the sale. Your support will benefit Philoptochos
commitments, aid disaster relief, and provide for those in need within the community.
PHILOPTOCHOS STEWARDSHIP DRIVE—Thank you to all, who renewed their Philoptochos
membership for the coming year. New members are always welcome. If you are not
currently a member, please consider joining. It is understandable if you are unable to
attend meetings. Your stewardship supports the numerous worthy projects undertaken
each year by the chapter. The next meeting is November 5 at 10:30 am in the Coffee Room.

not made a pledge for 2016, that the calendar year is steadily moving to its end. Therefore,
please do not delay to help your Church and make your pledge today.
Message from Father George
YOUTH SUNDAY
So many times when speaking of the youth, people say that they are the future of our
community. This is only partially true. While the youth is indeed made up of the future leaders of
our community, they are very much a part of our present community. This is evident by seeing
all of the programming that is designed for them, whether it be through educational or cultural
endeavors.
Events like today’s Youth Sunday highlight the presence of our youth and encourage
them to grow in the life of the Church, as well as inspire their life in Christ. We have requested
them to sing with our choir, we have encouraged our youth to read the Epistle, and we have
encouraged them to help in the Narthex at the Pangari.
The Church reminds us that if we are older and seasoned in our Church attendance,
leadership, and activities, or if we are among the neophytes as with our youth, we are very
much a part of the present life of the Church.
The children have always enjoyed a special place in Church, even from the time of our
Lord Jesus. In Matthew 18, His disciples asked Jesus: “Who, then, is the greatest in the
kingdom of heaven?” And, His response was given when He had a child brought to Him, and He
said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the
kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in
the kingdom of heaven. And, whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”
One of the characteristics of being a child is the sense of innocence and wonder with
which the world is viewed. This is part of the instruction that we as Orthodox Christians have
received from our Lord and Savior, Who is impressed when we live a life that is focused on
these ideals. In John 1:47: “Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, “Behold, an
Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”
The dictionary definition for the word guile is “insidious cunning in attaining a goal; crafty
or artful deception; duplicity.” Synonyms include the word deceit, hypocrisy, fraud, and trickery.
Clearly, everyone would agree that these characteristics are not productive, helpful, or favorable
for a life of someone who desires to grow in the likeness of God. Living a life of childlike
innocence would reject a life ruled by guile; therefore, we should look to the life of Nathanael
and people like him to imitate.
As Christians we are encouraged to live a life in Christ so that we might one day be
accepted in God’s Heavenly Kingdom, which is Salvation. As we grow in that understanding, let
us look to Scripture to instruct us. Among the many edifying teachings in Scripture, let us
conclude by focusing on this command of the Lord from the Gospel of Luke 18:16,
“Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them;
for to such belongs the kingdom of God.”
YOUTH HYMNOLOGY
EPIPHANY MEETING - OCTOBER 25
Director Viki Moustoukas is pleased that the Youth Hymnology
Program has entered its third year. Weekly sessions take place
during Sunday Church School immediately following Holy
Communion. Students this fall will study Agapiso Se Kyrie - I Love
You Lord, the Cherubic Hymn - "Hymn of Angels," and Eithomen
to Fos - We Have Seen the Light.
SPECIAL NOTE: Last year the Adult Choir graciously invited students in 4th grade and up to
sing with them on Sundays with choir members serving as mentors. Five (5) students
participated—Livy Commagere, Nicholas Marathonitis, George Ramirez, Maria Vennis,
and Danielle Venturatos.
Please encourage your child(ren) to participate in this wonderful opportunity. Students
must arrive by 10:00 am. After Holy Communion they proceed to Sunday Church
School. ALL CHILDREN OF THE COMMUNITY ARE WELCOME to join all Sunday Church
School and Hymnology activities. For more information, please contact Viki Moustoukas,
[email protected]. Thanks to everyone for the tremendous support of this ministry.
Volunteers working on the annual Epiphany event, and those, who wish to help with the
2017 Epiphany Celebration scheduled Sunday, January 8, 2017, are asked to attend a
meeting on Tuesday, October 25, at 7:00 pm in the Coffee Room.
HOLY TRINITY CATHEDRAL
Sunday, October 16, is a special day for Holy Trinity Cathedral as the community
celebrates Youth Sunday. The parish designated today as an opportunity for the
Church School students to reflect on the importance of being involved in the Liturgy,
as well as taking on leadership roles as ushers, readers, and choir.
Church School families are asked to sit in the front right pews of the Cathedral so
that the students can sing and participate in the hymns lead by the choir. The choir
will sit in the front left pews of the Cathedral as they lead the congregation in the
singing during the Liturgy. The congregation is asked to please sing along with the
choir and the students. An Artoclasia will be celebrated for the health of all that are
affiliated with the Religious Education programs in the parish.
Also, the dedication ceremony for the Epiphany Plaque, which recognizes the Cross
Retrievers and Dove Bearers of each year, will take place at the end of the Divine
Liturgy. Moreover, the Coffee Fellowship will be hosted by the Church School
students. Please plan on staying and allow the students to serve you while taking
time for fellowship with each other.

Iconoclast heresy that
had received imperial
support beginning with
the Edict issued in 726
by Emperor Leo the
Isaurian. Many of the
holy Fathers, who
condemned Iconoclasm
at this holy Council later
died as Confessors and
Martyrs for the holy
Icons during the second
assault of Iconoclasm in
the ninth century,
especially during the
reigns of Leo the
Armenian and
Theophilus.

TITUS, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist
on these things, so that those who have believed in God
may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds;
these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid
stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and
quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and
futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing
him once or twice, knowing that such a person is
perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I
send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come
to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the
winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer
and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing.
And let our people learn to apply themselves to good
deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be
unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you.
Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you
all. Amen.

THE GOSPEL
Luke 8:5-15
The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his
seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and
was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air
devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew
up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And
some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it
and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew,
and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples
asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it
has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of
God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing
they may not see, and hearing they may not
understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the
word of God. The ones along the path are those who
have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the
word from their hearts, that they may not believe and
be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who,
when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these
have no root, they believe for a while and in time of
temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the
thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their
way they are choked by the cares and riches and
pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as
for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing
the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and
bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things,
he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
