The 2010 Census is Coming - Be Counted!
The 2010 Census is just around the corner and it’s vital that you be counted. Beginning in March you’ll
receive a Census form in the mail. It’s easy to fill out and it’s confidential. In fact, it’s a crime for the Census
Bureau to share your information with anyone including the IRS or Immigration. We need everyone counted
to receive our fair share of federal money for schools, roadways and hospitals.
Census facts:
• The U.S. Constitution requires the federal government to count the population every 10 years.
• Everyone residing in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., America Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands is included in the Census.
• The 2010 will mark the 23rd Census of the United States.
• All responses are used for statistical purposes only, and all are strictly confidential.
For more information on the Census, contact Andrew Cohen-Cutler, Associate Planner for the City of
Calabasas at 818.224.1704.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
By Kimberly Bordonaro, ProStyle Image
Do you create your own luck?
I
t’s March, and in going with the St. Patty’s Day theme,
I pose this question to you in regards to your business
relationships.
Building successful relationships does not happen overnight.
It takes time to create trust and demonstrate your professionalism. One chamber venue that allows you to reveal your professional character and competence is by volunteering to serve on
one of our many committees. It is an excellent opportunity to
work hand-in-hand with like-minded professionals – who also
happen to be your prospective customers and referral sources - supporting one another for
the success of a mutual cause.
The key is to find a committee that truly speaks to something you care about and allocating some of your time to actively get involved. Some of the on-going committees to select
from include:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Chamber Deputies Program
Education/Green Task Force
Economic and Governmental Affairs
Monthly Breakfast Programs
Annual Wine Tasting & Silent Auction
Annual Pumpkin Festival
Annual Bowling Tournament
Annual Board Installation Dinner
By being sincere and consistent in your efforts, you will create your own luck in establishing relationships.
The calendar on the back of this newsletter displays the current meetings dates for our
committees. For more information on a specific committee, contact the Chamber Office and
they will put you in touch with the appropriate chairperson.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
By Martin Seda, Economic & Governmental Affairs Committee Chair
At the February 1st meeting, the Chair opened with an update from the last Chamber
Board meeting concerning the League of California Cities’ effort to qualify an initiative for
the November ballot. The purpose of the initiative is to protect municipal revenue sources
by prohibiting the State from taking funds used for transportation or local government
projects and services. The Board will consider the Committee’s recommendation of support
at their February 23rd meeting.
In addition, our public representatives discussed a number of key points affecting their
jurisdictions and stakeholders:
1. Water Conservation – Jeff Reinhardt, from the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD), updated us on a number of developments:
• Despite our recent storms, it will still take about two to three years to refill our
ground water reservoirs
• The Metropolitan Water District and State Senator Fran Pavely held a Community
Leaders’ Briefing on important water issues impacting California and our local
communities on February 12th at the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center.
• The District is opposing recently introduced Assembly Bill 5094 that would require

State Legislature review of the proposal for water conveyance in the
Sacramento Delta. This bill is viewed as a tactic to further delay the
implementation of the compromise solution developed by Governor
and Legislators late last year.
2. Public Safety – Richard Woolard, Calabasas Public Safety Commissioner, discussed the following points:
• The Highway Patrol reported a 10% reduction in collisions over
the past year.
• A 101 Freeway Task Force meeting will take place on February
9th to review key issues along the freeway corridor between the
West Valley and Thousand Oaks.
• The City is promoting a shoe collection for Haiti that is being
publicized on its TV station.
• The Lost Hills Sheriff Station is sponsoring a collection of expired drugs that residents are encouraged to use rather than
their own disposal methods.
3. City Planning - Tom Bartlett, City Planning Director, reported
that the City Council recently approved the updated Development
Code needed to match the City’s Master Development Plan. Several
new ordinances have also been adopted including:
• Green Building Ordinance – The code is an adoption of the State’s
voluntary code that impacts materials to be used in development.
• Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance – A State law that requires compliance by cities for the purpose of improving water
conservation.
• Tobacco Sales – Further restrictions on sales locations with
regards to distance from schools.
The Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for March 1st at Fins
Creekside Restaurant at 12 noon. Please join us to learn about the
