The smaller Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (Baneasa) is used mainly by business, charter and low‐cost airlines. City Transfer • The train service is called Henri Coandă Expres. Train tickets can be bought inside the airport at CFR ticket counter. The train station is, however, 2 km away from the airport, but there is a shuttle bus that transfers the passengers to it. The shuttle bus transfer IS INCLUDED in the train ticket. Once you reach the train station, there is another 30 minutes until your reach the main train station Gara de Nord. (ticket price is about €2) • There are two bus lines to the city, bus 780 which goes to the main train station Gara de Nord and express bus 783 which heads to downtown; they run daily (including on weekends and holidays) from 5:15 – 5:30 AM till 11:00PM (ticket price is about €2 for two trips) •

During the night, only taxis are available from Henri Coandă Airport. Aurel Vlaicu (Baneasa) airport is more easily accessible, either by taxi or public transport. There are several taxi companies. You can find a list with rates and phone numbers at www.ataxi.ro. The price varies between 1,4 to 3,5 Lei per kilometer (0,3 to 0,8 €). A trip from the Henri Coandă Airport to the city centre or university should cost around 15€. Accomodation On the 9th of May 2012 the final match of UEFA Europe League will take place in Bucharest. As a result the hotels may get crowded and we recommend to make the reservations well in advance. Then you take a train on M3 line in direction “Preciziei”. You get out at “Politehnica” station and then follow the Map 2. For the subway you can acquire a two way ticket for 4 Lei (less than €1) or a "Daily pass" for 6 Lei. More details and a map here. The ticketing system for ground transportation uses contact‐less smart‐cards, called ‘Activ card’. Once bought (the price is about €1,0Eur), the cards can be loaded with various ticketing options, including some that allow usage on both the subway and surface networks and also for the express lines to the airport. Depending on the accommodation you choose (distance from the venue), it might be a better choice to take a taxi. Just make sure you get the rate mentioned in “Arrival” section. Climate: The climate is continental. Spring is usually glorious with abundant sunshine and scattered showers. The temperature starts to rise markedly in April, highs usually reach the 25°C mark at the end of the month, though short cold spells with lows in the 0‐5°C zone and ground frost may strike even in mid‐May. Statistics in May: average high 25°C, average low 10°C, precipitation 64.5 mm. Time zone: Bucharest clocks are in GMT+2 time zone. Electricity: Two‐pin electric outlets (230 V, 50 Hz) Currency: The official currency in Romania is ‘Leu’ (RON). You can exchange your currency (usually only EUR, USD and GBP are accepted) at the currency exchange offices or in banks, the last is recommended. The official exchange rate can be obtained from the Romanian National Bank. The current exchange rate (as of 21/01/2012) for EURO is: 1 Euro = 4.35 RON Banking: In Romania banks are usually open between 9.00 ‐ 17.00 on weekdays. With the exception of some shopping mall bank branches, Romanian banks are not open on Saturdays. ATM machines and currency exchange machines are available throughout the country. The credit cards used most often ‐ Euro/MasterCard and VISA ‐ can be used to withdraw cash from banks and ATM machines and to pay bills in hotels, restaurants and shops. Emblems at the entrance mark the shops where credit cards are accepted. Traveler's checks may be cashed in banks, but are not accepted in shops.
