WATERBRIDGE SCHOOL AGE PROGRAM
NEWSLETTER
May 2012
KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM
As the school year is slowly coming to an end, so is our
special half-hour group time. This was a time that allowed
the educators to really get to know the children and provide
activities and experiences for them based on their interests
as a group.
The Blue Butterflies worked really
hard to develop our printing and
reading skills this year using the
Sight Word Stories reading booklets.
These booklets have provided the
children with the opportunity to read
frequently used words, thereby
building a strong base for reading success. We have also
enjoyed creating art projects and science experiments. With
the weather warming up, the children have been involved in
many outdoor activities: T-Ball, parachute games, soccer,
throwing, and tag. I enjoyed getting to know the children in
my group. It was a wonderful experience! Jennifer
The Orange Orangutans have done a
lot this year. We have travelled to the
Prince of Wales Manor twice to sing
for the seniors. We have taken the bus
to Canadian Tire to get the seeds for
our garden and we have been
swimming at Walter Baker Pool. We
have become Yoga Masters (sort of)
and have learned many Aboriginal
drumming songs. We have learned
about lions and tigers and Orangutans (Oh My), and
practiced our reading and writing skills by becoming authors
of our very own book. A big thank you to all of the amazing
Orangutan parents for your support with all of our projects
and trips this year and I hope you have a great summer.
Theresa
The Green Martians have been
busying practicing very important skill
sets. We started by trying to get
dressed within five minutes and I am
proud to say that, although we worked
on this in April when we still had
snowsuits, all the children were able to
beat the clock. As a reward, we went
swimming and had a pizza lunch. Next
we worked on our listening skills. For that reward, we had a
picnic lunch at the Hippo Park. Our next skill will be working
on our manners. I know they’re there but I don’t get to hear
them all that much. Sabrina
Jennifer, Theresa, Sabrina and Vandana
money for the Canadian Cancer Society, BARK Rescue
and now CHEO. Thanks to contributions from our
Waterbridge families, we made seven
baskets for the Barrhaven Christmas
Hamper Program. We have cooked
and baked from many different
countries from around the world. We
have run many, many kilometers,
put out a newsletter and will soon “publish” a cook
book. We baked a lot for Mother’s Day and will be
baking again for MayFair and
possibly the Father’s Day Tea.
It has been a wonderful year and we
are really looking forward to the
summer.

RASPBERRY WHITE CHOCOLATE SCONES
2 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons butter, cold or even frozen
1/3 cup white chocolate chunks
3/4 cup raspberries, fresh or frozen
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 egg
icing sugar
Preheat oven to 375℉.
Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut in cold butter; another option is to grate the frozen butter which works really well. The mixture should be
very crumbly. Stir in chocolate chunks and raspberries. If working with frozen raspberries, don’t add them straight away; you don’t want them to thaw in the dough.
Mix together yogurt, lemon zest, vanilla and egg. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Be careful not to over mix.
At this point, the recipe said to knead the dough, but with the raspberries, I found this very difficult and it started to turn the entire dough fuchsia - so I didn’t. They turned
out beautifully anyways. Plus the dough was far too moist, an additional cup or so of flour would have been needed for any proper kneading to be done.
Cut rounds of dough - or scoop and shape - place on a baking sheet. Brush lightly with any remaining yogurt and milk combined, or an egg wash. I didn’t want to waste an
entire egg, and I had left-over yogurt which worked nicely.
Bake for 18 - 20 minutes, or until golden, fluffy and when a toothpick is inserted, it comes out clean.
Ok, this is the fancy part - which I just love!
Remove scones from the oven, turn on the broiler and move the oven rack up to the top. Sprinkle icing sugar on the tops of each scone and place them under the broiler to
melt the sugar. Only a few seconds is needed; rotate the pan when needed.
Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
Makes 8 scones.
Theresa’s recipe.
CRANBERRY BANANA LOAF
2 cups flour (1/2 all-purpose; ½ whole wheat)
¼ cup shortening
1 ½ cups coarsely chopped fresh or frozen
cranberries
2 tsp baking powder
1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
¾ tsp salt
1 egg
½ tsp baking soda
1 cup mashed banana (about 2 bananas)
(1/2 cup chopped walnuts, if desired)
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease 9”x5” (2L) loaf pan with shortening.
Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
Cream shortening, sugar and egg together until smooth. Add banana; mix well. Add dry ingredients, mixing just until blended. Fold in cranberries (and nuts
if using). Pour into greased pan.
Bake at 350°F for 70-80 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool 15 minutes; remove from pan; cool completely.
Hint: prepare quick breads the day before to allow the flavours to mellow.
Preparation time: 15 mintues. Baking time: 80 minutes. Makes: 1 loaf. Freezing: Excellent
