THE PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear Members and Subscribers:
Welcome to the New Year 1975. "Ansearchin' News" has now been in our homes and
libraries for 21 years. Perhaps this year's Vol. 22 will give you an even
greater success in locating your Tennessee Ancestors.
In addition to information in the four issues of 1975, you may receive help
from another person who is working on the same line. This contact may come
from one or more of the services offered you by the Tennessee Genealogical Society.
Each subscriber may submit one free query of 50 words or less.
queries will be printed as space permits.
Your additional
You may receive information from our Master Surname Index. Send a request for
no more than four surnames, accompanied by S.A.S.E., to our Research Director.
This information will include names and addresses of those persons who are working
on your lines.
For $1.00 you may purchase the INDEX OF SURNAMES registered by guests of our
1969 Seminar. This index includes the lines each is working on.
(
You may send in your five generation charts, which are then bound. in book form
and placed in our library. Perhaps someone searching there will contact you.
And finally, you may also request a copy of the TABLES OF CONTENTS of all back
issues of "Ansearchin' News". This is sent free upon request with Self-Addressed,
Stamped Envelope.
For any more information about the Society, please refer to President's Letters
in the 1974 volume.

-2NOTES FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
For the past three months the editor and staff have been conferring with each other,
with printers and suppliers, trying to make good our promise to give you the same
high quality magazine as always without increasing the price. With the rise in cost
of every expense involved, the only solution is to either increase sales volume or
leave off the binder cover. I am happy to say that you loyal subscribers have
renewed subscriptions promptly and ordered enough back issues for us to feel confident of another successful year. This first issue comes without the binder, but
your SECOND ISSUE WILL INCLUDE THE COVER. In the event that you do not want the
binder, please drop us a card. This will save us some money and will help cut
postage, another promised increase.
We appreciate your requests for material on specific counties; the choic~ of some
of the contents of this issue was dictated by your requests. I would like to remind
you, however, that we have been printing for 21 years, and articles on your county
may have been printed earlier. Our Table of Contents for all of these years will
tell you which issues will interest you particularly. Also, there are other organizations and individuals printing in Tennessee, and we try not to duplicate material.
"Family Findings" is published by Mid-West Tennessee Genealogical
Society in Jackson, Tennessee; it contains records of Madison
County and the counties nearby. The Montgomery County Genealogical Journal is published by Ann Evans Alley of Adams, Tenn. I t
is an excellent source for records of that county. The River
Counties~ published by Jill K. Garrett of ,Columbia, Tenn.
concentrates on Wayne, Lewis, Perry, Hickman, Dickson, Humphreys,
Houston, Montgomery and Stewart Counties. Historic Maury~ the
publication of the Maury County Historical Society, Columbia,
Tenn., carries more genealogical data than most quarterlies which
are primarily concerned with history in general. The Bulletin~
published by the Watauga Association of Genealogists, Johnson City,
Tenn., is concerned mainly with the early East Tennessee counties.
Perhaps one of these periodicals has printed something from your county of orlgln.
This does not mean that we will not print anything from the above-named counties,
only that we will try not to duplicate something they have already printed. So, if
you can't find what you need, send in your request. We will do our best to help you.

THE CANNON FAMILY, 1734-1974 by Edward Pugh Cannon. Soft covers. Over 108 pages.
Not indexed. Order from the Author, 462 North Main St., Poplar Bluff, Mo. 63901.
$5.00.
Many people named Cannon came to America - to New England, to the Middle Atlantic
and Southern Colonies. They were Scotch-Irish from County Antrim, Ireland, a rugged
breed which settled and conquered the Southland. This genealogy is of Cannons from
South Carolina. The first census of the United States listed 148 Cannon families.
South Carolina reported 34 families, the largest number from any of the states. The
descendants of John and Samuel Cannon, and their records, are the subjects of this
genealogy. The Author has divided the book into chapters which define the South
Carolina Cannons, the Alabama Cannons, the Tennessee Cannons and the Missouri Cannons.
DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM CAPERS AND RICHARD CAPERS AND RELATED FAMILIES by Dorothy
K. MacDowell (Mrs. McNeely DuBose MacDowell) 1973. Hard covers. Over 160 pages.
Indexed. Order from Mrs. M. DuBose MacDowell, 113 Gregg Ave., Aiken, South Carolina 29801. $12.00
(
According to the author's records, brothers William, Richard and Gabriel Capers,
came to America and South Carolina about 1680. William had land grants from the
Lord Proprietors and owned lands on the islands off the coast of South Carolina and
lots in the City of Charleston. A planter and a dealer in hides and leather goods,
he had connections with the firm of James Capers and Co. of Liverpool, England.
Capt. William and his family served as vestrymen of Christ Church in the Parish of
the same name in, or before, 1708. Richard, also a planter, and Gabriel, a school
teacher, and their descendants established their lines of descent (the "Sea Island
Capers") around Beaufort, S. Carolina. As did all families of the thirteen colonies, the Capers descendants went west into the interior. They are still found
throughout the South and from the Southwest to the West.
RIDGWAY-RIDGEWAY FAMILY HISTORY by Lelah/Ridgway Vought 1973. Hard backs. Over
103 pages. Indexed. Order from the Author, 3900 Northhampton Rd., Amherst,
Mass. 01002. Hardback $20.00, paperback $10.00.
The Author gives two theories for the origin of the Ridgeway families. One (from
Mary Racy Ridgway, Bronxville, N. Y. and by George C. Ridgway in his book, Descent
of the Ridgway-Ridgeway Family in England and America), holds Richard Ridgeway,
the emigrant, to be the grandson of the second Earl of Londonderry. Another theory,
based principally on research done by Sir William Ridgway of Cambridge University,
holds Richard Ridgway, the emigrant, to be the son of William, a yeoman, and Rebecca Ridgway, of Wickham, Welford Parish, England. This book pictures the background of historical facts in which the American emigrants lived, as well as giving
five coats of arms, photographs, and information on related families. Also included
are Revolutionary War Records, 49 family charts, 6 pages of maps, much census information, 604 names and 109 bibliographic sources.
.
AMELIA COUNTY, Virginia Marriage Bonds, Consents and Minister's Returns 1816-1852.
Compiled and Indexed by Thomas P. Hughes, Jr., 1974. Soft covers. Over 75 pages.
Order from the Author, 4140 Chanwil Avenue, Memphis, Tenn. 38117 $10.00
-4The Marriage Register of Amelia Co., Va., shows the names of only seven ministers
who filed returns from 1816 to 1852. However, there are over 800 bonds listed
alphabetically under the groom's surname. The remaining surnames are indexed.
The register contains a few marriages as late as 1854. These have been included
here. In many cases a family relatioriship is given such as father of the bride,
mother of the groom, etc. Capitalized surnames and large print make this handy
reference book easy to use.
TENNESSEE CRAGONS AND THEIR KINFOLKS by Col. Henry D. Cragon 1974. Soft covers.
Over 100 pages. Indexed. Order from the Author, 217 Rockway Road, Birmingham,
Alabama 35209. $8.00.
The Cragons were from Smith and Macon Counties, Tennessee, and their forebearers
were from Virginia. Harvey Allen Cragon reared his family in Nashville, and their
story vividly depicts the life of their times. Related families were: Durham,
Miller, Pittman, Parrish, Cotton, White, Bond, Lofgren, Banister, Turnage, Banks,
Daugherty, Sherer, Cox and Reeves. This is a very interesting family history which
reflects the times and history of the areas in which they lived and died.
DUBOSE GENEALOGY compiled by Dorothy Kelly MacDowell (Mrs. McNeely DuBose MacDowell)
1972. Hard covers. Over 550 pages. Indexed. Order from Mrs. M. DuBose MacDowell,
113 Greg Ave., Aiken, South Carolina 29801. $20.00.
The DuBose family were French Huguenot refugees who settled on the Santee River in
South Carolina about 1689. The coat of arms and a chart showing the DuBose ancestry in France from 1300 to 1685 is given. Over 17,000 names of the descendants of
the emigrant Isaac DuBose are listed. The descendants of his children, Elizabeth,
Isaac, Andrew, John, Peter, and Stephen are treated in individual chapters. A list
of some related families and their genealogy is included.
FUQUA, A FIGHT FOR FREEDOM compiled by Alya Dean (Smith) Irwin 1974. Hard backs.
Over 470 pages. Indexed. Order from the compiler, 1300 Wood Hollow Dr., Apt.
5003, Houston, Texas 77027. $35.00.
The Fuqua family is of Huguenot descent. The emigrant was Guillaume Fouquet who
came to Virginia prior to 1687. He was married to Jane Eyre. His sons were
William, Joseph, Giles and Ralph. The,William Fuqua line is traced to 1974. The
book is encyclopedic in its scope and covers over 300 years in America. Many
persons of French, English, Irish, Scottish, Italian and German origins make up
the family. Some 99 family names are involved. A remarkable compilation that
shows much work and excellent form.
HISTORY OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY, INDIANA Together With Historic Notes On The Wabash
Valley by H. W. Beckwith 1881. Hard backs. Over 710 pages. Indexed. Order from
Unigraphic, Inc., 1401 North Fares Ave., [vansvi11e, Indiana 47711. $15.00.
The present book is a reproduction by Unigraphic, Inc., 1974. The publication is
a store house of pioneer information, names of persons and families gleaned from
early authors, old maps and manuscripts, private and official correspondence, and
other authentic material from out-of-the-way sources. The story of the settlement
of the Wabash Valley is interesting and full of names. This is a genealogical
source book.

RICHARD AND PENELOPE STOUT, A Critical Analysis,Of An Important Period In American
History by Claude D. Stout 1974. Soft covers. Over 52 pages. Not indexed.
Order from the Author, 104 Main St., Palmyra, Wisconsin 53156. No price given.
This is a remarkable little book concerning the Stout Family in America. The
Stouts, of Norse origin, came to America as seamen from Jamaica and settled in New
York City. From there the family moved to New Jersey and produced the famous
"Penelope". The author has vividly extolled the Stout hame from England to whereever the English settled and left records. It is of interest that the author was
94 years of age when he wrote the book.
COL. WILLIAM A. THARPE OF TENNESSEE, ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS by Mildred Tharpe
Hope 1973. Soft covers. Over 98 pages. Not indexed. Order from the Author, 106
Enden Ave., Shelbyville, Tenn. 37160. $7.20.
The name Tharpe is frequently found in the southeastern states, especially in
Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia. Alinthorp, Alenthrop, Allentharpe, Thorp,
Thorpe, Tharp and Tharpe are listed as variations of the same name. The author
traces the Tharpe family of Henry County, Tenn. to Benjamin Allentharpe and his
father, John, a Revolutionary soldier of North Carolina. John received a land
grant of 640 acres in Davidson County, Tenn., which was surveyed May 17th, 1793.
Much valuable information is recorded in the allied lines, some of which are:
Cooper, Hamilton, Green, Blount, Alston, Crockett, Finsley, Kennedy, Hawkins,
Miller and Caldwell.
(
TENNESSEE HISTORY, a Bibliography. Sam B. Smith, Editor and compiler. Luke H.
Banker, Ass't. Editor 1974. Hard backs. Over 498 pages. Indexed. Order from
the University of Tennessee Press, Communications Bldg., Knoxville, Tenn. 37916.
$17.50.
This book is extensive and comprehensive in its scope. It lists publications
which cover every facet, fact and historical event of Tennessee from its beginning
through every stage of Tennessee history. Very little seems to be left out. For
each county there is listed an appointed historian and a bibliography. Researchers
will find this a valuable reference. book fpr Tennessee source material.

-10"GONE WEST"
Tennessee Men in California, 1856
Effingham P. Humphrey, Jr.
A phrase that occurs all too often in genealogies, especially before the
Civil War period, is "Left home when a young man and was never heard from again."
These men often went to sea, to the "big city", and in the 1849-60 period, to
California as part of the Gold Rush.
Some of this latter group can be identified in the Index to the 1850 Census
This
~% the State of California, compiled by Alan P. Bowman (Baltimore, 1972).
census (the count was taken in 1850 and into the Spring of 1851) gave not only
the name of the individual, but also his age and state of origin.
Equally helpful, though for a limited area, is the later Miners & Business
Men's Directory. For the Year Commencing January 1st, 1856. Embracing a General
Directory of the Citizens of Tuolumne, and portions of Calaveras, Stanislaus and
San Joaquin Counties. Together with the Mining Laws of Each District, A
Description of the Different Camps, and Other Interesting Statistical Matter.,
by Heckendorn & Wilson (Columbia: Printed at the Clipper Office, Fulton St.,
Near Main. 1856).
This small pamphlet, in the Rare Book Room of the New York Public Library,
consists of 104 pages, plus paper covers, four pages of advertising, a title
page, and a view of Columbia, one of the richest and most important settlements
in the Mother Lode. The brief preface disclaims completeness and accuracy,
because of the lack of cooperation in certain mining camps, and states, "we
have not given over one-eight [sic] part of the population."
Nonetheless, several thousand names, with occupations and states of origin,
are included, listed by town, mining camp or district. The names of the men
from Tennessee (either born there or previous residents) are here presented as
shown in the original, with possible errors in spelling.
Tuolumne County, one of the original 27 counties of California, was
organized on 18 February 1850, and the County Seat in 1856 was Sonora. It lies
at the southern end of the gold mining area, and the three other counties
mentioned are neighboring areas to the west and north.
Grateful acknowledgement for valuable assistance is made to Carlo M.
De Ferrari, Tuolumne County Historian, Sonora.

Mrs. J. W. Corzine of Memphis, Tennessee, has a number of letters written during
the Civil War by her STOCKDALE ancestors who were serving in the Confederacy. Two of
them,(written by a son of James A. Stockdale, a minister in Ala.) are quoted b~low:
(
Dear Brother
Abbeville, Miss., Nov. 29,1862
Yours of the 22nd and Ellen's of the 18th was received yesterday. Found me in good
health with the exception of the toothache now and then. I will go to Oxford (Miss)
in a day or two and have them looked over. The 42nd is now being paid off for two
months only. General Maury has cited the 42nd Ala. Sharpshooters for good di~ci
pline, soldierly appearance, and noble conduct on the battlefield at Corinth. Old
Thad is about to kill the Regt. to death in skirmish drills.
The troops are expecting an engagement daily but you know how this is. General
Pemberton was at Abbeville yesterday. We have moved our camp closer to the railroad nearer to the bridge. There are two cases of smallpox in the 37th Ala. Regt.,
disease contracted while prisones at Iuka. They have been placed to themselves and
the whole Regt. moved over the river to prevent its spread. I have been vaccinated,
but there is no danger at all. The men that have it are nearly well. We are looking for Lt. Richy daily and hope also you will be back soon.
Jeff be certain to bring me a pair of boots or shoes and tell Ma to send me two
pair of socks but don't forget the shoes or boots. If you can get me boots at $20
get them and I will pay you. We have just received orders to cook three days rations and keep them on hand. I don't know what is up now nor do I pretend to try to
say. We have fittened up the regt. with accoutrements ani are now receiving the guns.
If they keep three days' rations on hand it will be impossible for me to go to Oxford. I think they are expecting a fight. Tell Ellen I will write her in a few
days. My respects to all friends. Write me the news.
Your brother and son
A. B. Stockdale
P. S. Twelve hours later. Excitement high in camp. I have been busy all day
issuing arms and ammunition. I am now through. Orders are for all knapsacks
and baggage to be sent to depot at Abbeville commanding heard all day. You can
guess the state of affairs. You will hear from me again soon. Write me still at
Abbeville.
-20The following letter is from another son, A. (Asbury) S. Stockdale:
My Dear Mother,
Dalton, Georgie, Dec. 13, 1863
I wrote Ellen yesterday but since then I have learned from Lt. A. J. Richey that
his father, Col. W. M. Richey, will leave home on the 20th of this month to visit
the regiment and bring clothing. I would like for Pa to see him and see if he
could bring a box for me and if he will I want you to send me a box of eatibles ...
say dried fruit, butter, a joint of meat, some more pepper and a bottle of good
vinegar ... anything to eat. Col. Richey will reach camp about the 24th of the month
the reason I wish you would send by him.
Ma don't think I am starving because I ask you for these things for I live as long
as money lasts but that is nearly out. We draw one and one/fourth pounds of meal,
three/fourths pound of beef, rice, potatoes, salt, etc. May I have no news to
write to you, only as you hear every day from the papers. We are still building
quarters and expect to remain here this winter.
Write to your affectionate son,
<
A. S. Stockdal e
Ma since writing the above I have received a letter from Jeff (another brother) on
the 24th of November, 18 days on the way~ One also from Charley H. All well. My
love to all.

Dear Father and Mother,
Braxton Battery, March 4, 1862
I pen this hasty letter to you that you may know of our sudden removal from this
point. Tomorrow at 8 o'clock the 1st Ala. Regiment leaves Pensacola and we suppose will go directly to MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE. I think it is the intention of the War
Department to sacrifice Pensacola to save Mobile, as we are shipping all our ammunitions to that point, dismounting all the guns on Barrancus McKee and batteries
and taking them off to Mobile. The most of the troops here will stop at Mobile,
but it is supposed that the 1st Ala. will go to General Bragg who is at Memphis
fortifying that place.
The boys are in high spirits at the prospect of a removal and consequently every
thing is in confusion tonight. The remainder of the "Rifles" will only be in
service sixteen days more, yet will go with the regiment till our time is out, then
come home if alive, which I HOPE will be so.
I am well. "As" has been sick with billious fever, but is now up and will go with
us if he gets sick again I will stop with him at Aunt Betsy Raifords, as we will
go nearly by there. I will write as soon as I can again. Tell my friends that
I can't write them now. You will do so Ma.
Yours in haste, etc.
(Signed) Jeff K. Stockdale
P.S. If ALIVE and well I will be home in less than 3 weeks.

TENNESSEE SENATORS by Kenneth McKellar (Southern Publishers, Inc., Kingsport,
Tennessee, 1942) has been cited by one of our friends as an excellent source
of Tennessee biographical history. Senator McKellar was before his death a
member of the House of Representative for six years and a member of the U. S.
Senate for 26 years. His papers are on file in the main library of the Memphis
Public Library and contain much material of interest to genealogists.
-21ABSTRACTS OF KENTUCKY BIOGRAPHIES
Submitted by Grace Hall Upshaw (Mrs. J. D.)
In 1885, W. H. Perrin, J. H. Battle and G. C. Kniffen published their first edition
of KENTUCKY: A HISTORY OF THE STATE. In 1972 the Kentucky Reprint Company published
a facsimile reprint of Part II which contains histories and biographies of the Jackson Purchase area. The abstracted biographies which follow show some connection
with Tennessee in the life of the subject. Because these are abstracts and are not
complete quotes, the researcher should refer to the original book for complete information. Abbreviations used are as follows:

NOTE TO READERS - A number of corrections and additions have been
received from several readers in connection with the publication of
the index to the 1850 Memphis and Shelby County census, publication
of which was begun in 1973. This is an index only, and all names
appearing in the census are not shown. Due to the difficulty in reading
the old-style and sometimes poor handwriting of the enumerators, it is often
necessary to be familiar with the old family names in the area listed in
order to decipher the writing properly, not to mention some misspelling by
the census taker or even by the family enumerated. It is advisable, therefore,
for the reader, if he finds a name similar to the one he is seeking, to refer
to the microfilm to verify the name. The index in "ANSEARCHIN'" NEWS has been
read and rechecked as accurately as possible without resolving the different
readings of the names in question, which were brought to our attention. - Ed.

ATTORNEY GENERAL TYLER McLAIN'S WILL
Contributed by Augusta Brough
This will was found on an undated scrap of newspaper on the floor of an antique shop,
along with other scraps dated in the 1930's. An advertisement on the reverse side of
the clipping shows the name of Bry's, a Memphis department store no longer in existence.
The item urges people to make wills, and the Attorney General's will was printed to show
the legality of a handwritten will.
"This is my last will and testament. I do hereby revoke all former wills. At my
death, I request all my just debts be paid out of my estate.
"Everything that I possess at the time of my death I bequeath to my wife, Edwina G.
McLain. I appoint her executrix without the necessity of making bond, and making any
reports or settlements with the courts."
