Topic: “Reflection on 40 years of Skin Science; Where we have been, where are
we now, and where we are going”
Our knowledge of the skin has improved dramatically since I joined Procter and
Gamble to carry out skin research 40 years ago. In my opinion progress has been
most dramatic in two areas; understanding of the nature of the stratum corneum
(SC) barrier and evolution of methods for non-invasive measurement of skin
function. This talk will briefly review progress in both fields and discuss some of the
key academic and industry players responsible for that progress.
We have gone from considering the SC to be a “plastic wrap” of dead cells, to
understanding the dynamic nature of the SC, including metabolic events that occur
as the barrier is formed and maintained. Forty years ago we couldn’t even image
the intracellular lipids of the SC and didn’t really know they existed. Now we debate
details of their structure, formation and role in such conditions as ichthyosis and
atopic dermatitis. Similar progress has been made in understanding the role of
filaggrin, another molecule that was not known 40 years ago.
The first meeting of the group that is now the International Society for
Biophysics and Imagine of the Skin took place in 1976. At that time most
instruments for non-invasive measurement of skin function were “home-built”,
leading to many arguments about proper interpretation of the data. Now we have
bewildering array of commercial instruments. Naturally we still argue about data
interpretation.
While it is hard to predict where we will go in the next 40 years, I can at least
speculate on the next few years based on current trends in skin research.

Spring has officially sprung, but it seems like Mother Nature did not get the
memo.
The only saving grace is NCAA March Madness Tournament and looking
forward to the start of the baseball season.
I am sure that you, as well as the rest our members, are tired of this winter-like weather,
and would like to get out and enjoy some good company, an adult beverage and a good
meal.
I would like to invite all of our members to attend our April 23rd meeting. Our guest speaker
will be our own Dr. Randy Wickett. As most of you know Randy has a vast scope of
knowledge, as it relates to the Personal Care Industry, and his presentations are always very
interesting and informative.
As an additional bonus, there will be several different prizes that will be raffled off. The only
thing that is required is that you have to be present at the April meeting to participate.
So leave your winter blues at the door and enjoy the meeting!
See you all at the meeting!

NYSCC : COSMETICS IN CONTEMPORARY BRAZIL
May 12, 2014 – 8:00am to 5:15pm
Description
A member of the rising economic powers, otherwise known as the BRIC
nations and a significant emerging market, Brazil is Latin America's
largest economy and the fifth largest country in the world with a
population estimated to be about 200 million. Demographically, Brazil is
one of the most ethnically diverse countries and a major consumer of
personal care products and fragrances. Brazil’s biological diversity is the
largest in the world. It is blessed with abundant raw materials which can
have use in personal care.
As more companies are embracing globalization to reach new
customers in new markets, a greater understanding of consumer
preferences, important product types, and regulatory issues in this vast
and growing market is essential.
The NYSCC, in conjunction with its world renowned Suppliers Day event,
has assembled a program of experts to further explore this land of
immense opportunities.

THE TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE RUNS FOR TWO DAYS
Our members have a continual need to maintain their current awareness of new materials, emerging
technologies, innovative services, and state-of-the-art equipment in their pursuit of developing
tomorrow's cosmetic and OTC products. The "Technology Showcase" was begun to provide a forum for
the chemists and scientists of suppliers and contract laboratories serving the personal care industry to
present their most recent developments in a poster format. This "Showcase" combines the details of a
scientific poster session with the pragmatic directness of a commercial exhibit (trade names,
demonstration prototypes, and supportive literature presented). This venue as a part of the Society's
Annual Scientific Meeting enables it to be an effective information medium for cosmetic scientists.
Participants are invited to present their information in a poster format (4' x 8') to include experimental
data, graphs, illustrations/photos, and prototypes on the technical attributes of the featured product or
technology. Complete trade names as well as the INCI nomenclature is requested for ingredients.
Companies wishing to participate are to submit an abstract of approximately 150-200 words of their
intended presentation to the Committee on Scientific Affairs (COSA) on or before September 15,
2014. Abstract Cover Sheets can be printed from our website www.scconline.org. The abstract and
cover sheet should be emailed to [email protected]. Abstracts must be in a Word
Document format only. Abstracts will be reviewed on a “first come-first served” basis as the
"Technology Showcase" is limited to the number of posters allowed. There is a flat fee is $1,200.00 per
poster. The fee does not include any Meeting Registrations per poster. Company representatives will be
required to register for the Annual Meeting. Notification of acceptance will be made by October 20, 2014 and
payment must be made in full by November 26, 2014.
