PIG CITY GARDEN CALENDAR
By Daniel Marvin
WEEK of 6-12 feb., 2012
Knowing some of us will soon be ordering
seeds from catalogs.. We should understand
that the precise meaning of the term “___days
to maturity” or “____ days” shown in seed catalogs may vary
with the catalog.
If there is any confusion - call and find out exactly what
they mean.
As an example, one seed company may state very clearly
that it means the period of time that elapses from the time
seed is sown directly in the garden until the first of the crop
is ready to harvest. Another might mean from the time of
transplant (assuming you started the seed indoors) until the

and hardy tomato plant will produce fruit over a four to eight
week period.
Knowing that we would want a mature plant to have the
first ripe tomatoes for picking at least six weeks prior to the
first killing frost date - or - by 1 August, we should calculate
all the time segments involved.
For example: If we were to choose a tomato that would
require 75 days from transplant to first harvest, we would have
to have the plants in the garden by the day after Father’s Day,
having “hardened” them off in a cold frame or garden house
beginning on Flag Day (14 June). Then, taking in account
that the seeds take about two weeks to germinate and another
six or seven weeks before they are ready to “harden off” it
is imperative we start those seeds no later than 12-19 April.
I did just that.
Happy Gardening!

“It’s a quick, easy meal that is very
filling. Some people will also top it
with regular taco toppings, i.e. lettuce,
tomatoes, black olives, etc. It also is
great as leftovers for lunches! Serve
with taco sauce.”
Prep Time: 20 Min. Cook Time: 10 Min. Ready In: 30 Min.
Ingredients
1 (8 ounce) package refrigerated crescent rolls
1 pound ground beef
1 (1 ounce) package taco seasoning mix
1 (16 ounce) container sour cream
8 ounces shredded Mexican-style cheese blend
1 (14 ounce) bag tortilla chips, crushed
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Lay crescent dough flat on the bottom of a square cake

Artist Elizabeth Munroe
Showcased At The Cazenovia
Public Library
Until March 31, 2012, visitors to the Cazenovia Public
Library Art Gallery can enjoy “Keeping Up Appearances,”
the latest collection by local artist Elizabeth Cummings
Monroe. There will be an artist’s reception on the evening
of Friday, February 10th from 7-8:30 pm at the Cazenovia
Public Library Art Gallery.
Monroe uses watercolor, inks, and acrylic paint
interchangeably. She begins a painting with transparent
watercolor in order to achieve a luminous quality and then
moves to ink and acrylic for opacity and contrast.
She explains, “My current body of work features my usual
unconventional abstract style in which I have now incorporated
the human figure. I am constantly mesmerized by the human
body, and in the past I painted people in a more realistic style,
a style that I do not particularly enjoy. Now, I have found a
way to incorporate a hidden world into my abstractions. The
addition of a figure or groups of figures in my painting gives
an immediate focal point for my viewer, and the painting
becomes a mystery, story, or puzzle to solve.”
The Cazenovia Public Library is open from 9 A.M. to 9
P.M. weekdays and from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. Saturdays. And
don’t forget that free transportation through CRIS-CAT is
provided for Cazenovia, Fenner, and Nelson residents over
55 and ambulatory. Just call 655-0612 between 7 A.M. and
6 P.M. three to five days in advance.

A Valentine Story
For Lovers Everywhere
John Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened
his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making
their way through Grand Central Station. He looked for the
girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl
with the rose.
His interest in her had begun thirteen months before in a
Florida library. Taking a book off the shelf he found himself
intrigued, not with the words of the book, but with the notes
penciled in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a
thoughtful soul and insightful mind. In the front of the book,
he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell.
With time and effort he located her address. She lived in
New York City. He wrote her a letter introducing himself
and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped
overseas for service in World War II. During the next year and
one month the two grew to know each other through the mail.
Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart. A romance was
budding. Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused.
She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she
looked like. When the day finally came for him to return from
Europe, they scheduled their first meeting - 7:00 PM at the
Grand Central Station in New York. “You’ll recognize me,”
she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel.”
So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose
heart he loved, but whose face he’d never seen. I’ll let Mr.
Blanchard tell you what happened:
A young woman was coming toward me, her figure long
and slim. Her blonde hair lay back in curls from her delicate
ears; her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had
a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like
springtime come alive. I started toward her, entirely forgetting
to notice that she was not wearing a rose. As I moved, a small
provocative smile curved her lips. “Going my way, sailor?”
she murmured.

then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly
behind the girl. A woman well past 40, she had graying hair
tucked under a worn hat. She was more than plump, her
thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes. The girl in the
green suit was walking quickly away. I felt as though I was
split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so
deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly
companioned me and upheld my own. And there she stood.
Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, her gray eyes
had a warm and kindly twinkle. I did not hesitate. My fingers
gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was
to identify me to her. This would not be love, but it would be
something precious, something perhaps even better than love,
a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful.
I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book
to the woman, even though while I spoke I felt choked by
the bitterness of my disappointment. “I’m Lieutenant John
Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you
could meet me; may I take you to dinner?”

The woman’s face broadened into a tolerant smile. “I don’t
know what this is about, son,” she answered, “but the young
lady in the green suit who just went by, she begged me to
wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask
me out to dinner, I should go and tell you that she is waiting
for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was
some kind of test!”
It’s not difficult to understand and admire Miss Maynell’s
wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to
the unattractive. “Tell me whom you love,” Houssaye wrote,
“And I will tell you who you are.”

“I see a little cottage at the right of us,” he said, “built of
logs and branches. Shall we go there?”
“Yes, indeed,” answered the child. “I am all tired out.”
So the Scarecrow led her through the trees until they
reached the cottage, and Dorothy entered and found a bed of
dried leaves in one corner. She lay down at once, and with
Toto beside her soon fell into a sound sleep. The Scarecrow,
who was never tired, stood up in another corner and waited
patiently until morning came.

One of the big trees had been partly chopped through, and
standing beside it, with an uplifted axe in his hands, was a
man made entirely of tin. His head and arms and legs were
jointed upon his body, but he stood perfectly motionless, as
if he could not stir at all.
Dorothy looked at him in amazement, and so did the
Scarecrow, while Toto barked sharply and made a snap at the
tin legs, which hurt his teeth.
“Did you groan?” asked Dorothy.
“Yes,” answered the tin man, “I did. I’ve been groaning
for more than a year, and no one has ever heard me before or
come to help me.”
“What can I do for you?” she inquired softly, for she was
moved by the sad voice in which the man spoke.

“Get an oil-can and oil my joints,” he answered. “They are
rusted so badly that I cannot move them at all; if I am well
oiled I shall soon be all right again. You will find an oil-can
on a shelf in my cottage.”
Dorothy at once ran back to the cottage and found the oilcan, and then she returned and asked anxiously, “Where are
your joints?” “Oil my neck, first,” replied the Tin Woodman.
So she oiled it, and as it was quite badly rusted the Scarecrow
took hold of the tin head and moved it gently from side to side
until it worked freely, and then the man could turn it himself.
“Now oil the joints in my arms,” he said. And Dorothy
oiled them and the Scarecrow bent them carefully until they
were quite free from rust and as good as new.
The Tin Woodman gave a sigh of satisfaction and lowered
his axe, which he leaned against the tree. “This is a great
comfort,” he said. “I have been holding that axe in the air

ever since I rusted, and I’m glad to be able to put it down at
last. Now, if you will oil the joints of my legs, I shall be all
right once more.”
So they oiled his legs until he could move them freely; and
he thanked them again and again for his release, for he seemed
a very polite creature, and very grateful. “I might have stood
there always if you had not come along,” he said; “so you
have certainly saved my life. How did you happen to be here?”
“We are on our way to the Emerald City to see the Great
Oz,” she answered, “and we stopped at your cottage to pass
the night.”
“Why do you wish to see Oz?” he asked. “I want him to
send me back to Kansas, and the Scarecrow wants him to put
a few brains into his head,” she replied.
The Tin Woodman appeared to think deeply for a moment.
Then he said: “Do you suppose Oz could give me a heart?”
“Why, I guess so,” Dorothy answered. “It would be as easy
as to give the Scarecrow brains.” “True,” the Tin Woodman
returned. “So, if you will allow me to join your party, I will
also go to the Emerald City and ask Oz to help me.”
