When Mike Wagner steps into the business world, he sees people working
inside organizations who have more insight, innovation and energy to offer
than they realize. That’s why he started White Rabbit Group – to unleash
that potential! There’s nothing more satisfying than to see leaders and
employees take their company’s performance to a new level.

creativity and organizational brand building. He has spoken to and worked
with clients ranging from small and medium-sized businesses to Fortune
500 companies.
On May 18, come hear Mike and take time to recognize small businesses

Connect With Iowa Leadership
The Greater Burlington Partnership welcomes Roger Lande, Director of the Iowa
Department of Natural Resources, for Connect With Iowa Leadership luncheon series.
The Department of Natural Resources is one of the state’s most controversial.
Its operations affect farmers, park users, hunters, fishing enthusiasts and many
businesses. DNR regulates pollution, hunting and fishing, livestock confinements and
landfills, for example. It also runs energy efficiency and waste reduction programs.
Lande has long been active in protecting and preserving Iowa’s natural resources as a
hunter and fisherman. Roger was an Eagle Scout and as a youth was active in Scout
and Izaak Walton league projects to protect the soil, air, woods and water.
The luncheon will be April 20 from 11:30 am - 1 pm in the Winegard Board Room at
the Greater Burlington Partnership. Cost to attend the luncheon is $15.
RSVP to Brenda Levitt at [email protected] or 319-208-0047 by April 17.
No cancellations or refunds after April 17.

Southeast Iowa Regional Job Fair Supports Area Veterans
Greater Burlington Partnership is proud to be one of the
sponsors for the 2012 Southeast Iowa Regional Job Fair. Just
a few months ago, help wanted ads were scarce, as were job
offers. However, with over 75 help wanted ads in last Sunday’s
newspaper, the April job fair is perfectly timed to help area
employers fill their growing need for more employees.
The new Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown has
offered its facility to provide this much needed service.
With that generous offer, IowaWorks and all sponsors are
proud to dedicate the first hour of this job fair to our Veterans.
America has the strongest, most capable and professional
military in the world. Unfortunately, even though many of
our veterans have the training to perform a wide variety of
occupations, some of them are struggling to find employment
when they return from duty.
While Iowa’s January unemployment rate was 5.4%, our regional
unemployment rate was 7.8% and the unemployment rate among
Iowa veterans is even higher.
Approximately 150 members of the 832nd Engineer Battalion
Army National Guard from Mt. Pleasant and Keokuk and 85
members of the 389th Engineer Company U.S. Army Reserves
from Middletown have returned in the last 7 months. The
Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown is encouraging all
of the soldiers in their battalions who are seeking employment
to come to the Southeast Iowa Regional Job Fair. This is your
opportunity to support and hire some of the most professional
and dedicated employees you will find.

Just a
Burlington is a wonderful community, and I look forward
to working with you to make it even better.”
Embrace New Leadership
This message needs to come from every corner of
our community. It is hoped that leaders from West
Burlington, surrounding communities and Des Moines
County, as well as representatives from the business
community, educational entities and citizens from every
walk of life will say in one voice, “We are glad you are here,
our community is poised and ready for growth, and we
want to work with you to make this the best time in the
history of Greater Burlington.”
Later this month James Ferneau will begin his duties
as the City Manager of Burlington. I want to take this
opportunity to thank the Burlington City Council for the
excellent process that was used in identifying candidates
and selecting the new City Manager. The decision to
use a consulting firm was a good one, the vetting process

Burlington
Partnership
In the first few weeks it is critical that relationships
are developed and partnerships formed that will be
foundational for the new City Manager’s tenure. An
examination of every past achievement and every current
successful venture proves that teamwork provides the
only opportunity for significant accomplishment. Mr.
Ferneau seems to possess the skills, past experiences and
personal characteristics to lead the city, and he will need
members of the community to join forces with ideas,
support and enthusiasm.
Thought
Mr. Ferneau has excellent credentials and impressed
the Council, community panel and city staff. There
is every reason for optimism as a new era in city
management begins. With several city department
heads slated to retire in the coming months, the new
City Manager will have a unique opportunity to build a
leadership team for key city operations.
“In the first few weeks it is critical that
relationships are developed and partnerships
formed that will be foundational for the new
City Manager’s tenure.”
Let’s make a commitment to greet our new Burlington
City Manager with receptivity and optimism.
When people start new jobs, frequently they are granted
what is called a honeymoon period. They are given a few
months of understanding, kindness and even forgiveness.
Let’s all make a contract with the new City Manager.
Let the contract emphasize commitment to mission,
excellence, progress, respect, fairness and integrity. The
contract length by mutual agreement will be “as long as
you are our City Manager.” If all key partners and the
citizens of Greater Burlington agree to join hands with
the Mr. Ferneau in the opportunities before us, there is no
limit to what can be achieved!
Dennis Hinkle, President & CEO
Greater Burlington Partnership
It would be my hope that during the critical first weeks,
dozens of Greater Burlington leaders and citizens would
make a point to meet the new City Manager and say,
“I want to do everything in my power to help you be
successful. If you ever need an ear or want a perspective
on something, do not hesitate to call me. Greater
Alliant Energy
Executive Visit
Members of the Executive
Management Team from
Alliant Energy spent the day
in Greater Burlington on
February 29.
Alliant Energy was a major
investor in the organization’s
Partnering for the Future
campaign and has been a
strong partner on economic
development projects.
There were several goals for
the visit:
1. Demonstrate the economic
momentum building within
the community and showcase
the opportunity for future
development.
2. Provide an opportunity
for area business leaders to
interact with the management
team.
3. Illustrate the return on
investment and lay the
groundwork for future
partnerships.
Gregg Lawry, Vice President
of Customer Service, was
the keynote at an investor
luncheon and spoke about
the future of energy demand
and generation. The visit was
deemed a great success.

Great River Region D.C. Summit
On April 23 – 24 the Great River Region will make their annual trip to our nation’s
capital. Approximately 15 delegates from southeast Iowa will attend, informing
Congressman Loebsack, Senator Grassley and Senator Harkin of positions on the
issues affecting business and requesting funding for projects of importance to the
region’s economic development. It is important that Greater Burlington, along
with the Great River Region, communicate in person with our representatives in
Washington, D.C.
Meetings are being scheduled with Congressman Loebsack, Senator Grassley and
Senator Harkin, as well as the U.S. Chamber, Waterways Council, Amtrak, and the
USDA. This year’s trip will inform our congressional delegation on the specific
needs of the region in the following areas: Transportation, Energy Production,
River, Welfare Reform and Defense.

Des Moines County Youth Participate In Career Fairs
More than 640 students from area schools gathered at Southeastern Community
College for the annual Career Fairs hosted by the Future Workforce committee.
The Fifth Grade Career Fair and Eighth Grade Project CAPE (Career Awareness
Partners in Education) lasts about three hours and is open to all Des Moines County
schools. The fairs allow the students to learn about six different career pathways:
Agriscience, Arts/Communication, Family/Human Services, Health Sciences,
Business/Marketing, and Engineering. Eighth grade students attended an additional
session on Entrepreneurship. Over thirty of our local business people volunteered
time out of their day to talk about their careers with these fifth and eighth grade
students. Presenters spoke to the students about the different opportunities these
career pathways have to offer.

Convention & Visitors Bureau Launches Spring Marketing Campaign
Greater Burlington
EXPERIENCE IT!
Spring is upon us, which means the Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau will be launching
many ad campaigns to get Midwesterners thinking about a trip to Greater Burlington.
A mix of print, web, and television advertising will play a role in the spring marketing campaign for 2012.
Look for ads promoting the community in many popular magazines including Midwest Living, AAA
Living, Reader’s Digest, Ladies Home Journal, Better Homes & Gardens and Family Circle. Ads will also be
placed in all of the Iowa metro newspapers.
New for 2012, Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau, will be placing ads in the Journal and
Topics newspapers, which have circulation in all Chicago suburban newspapers.
A 30 second television advertising spot has been produced and will be airing in Dubuque, Waterloo/
Cedar Falls and Quad Cities markets.
Web-based banner ads will be placed on travel related websites throughout the months of April – June.
The Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau will be analyzing web traffic at
www.visitburlingtoniowa.com, Community Guide orders from target markets, increased inquires and
leads from target markets and click-through rates to gauge the success of the campaigns.

Burlington to Host Iowa DOT Commission Tour
Burlington will host the annual Iowa Department of Transportation
Commission tour on April 9 and 10. The annual commission tour
rotates around the State of Iowa annually and gives commissioners the
opportunity to visit completed projects and look at potential project
areas that need to be addressed.
Day two of the event will consist of communities presenting potential
Iowa Department of Transportation projects to the commission. The
local Highway 61 Coalition will be presenting the Burlington to the
Muscatine County line project at this year’s meeting. All members
of the Greater Burlington Partnership are invited to attend the
presentation.

Downtown Partners
Gears Up for Spring
It’s an exciting time to be downtown!
With warm weather arriving, Downtown
Partners is working on a number of great
projects to promote and beautify the city
center. You’re invited to participate!
Farmers Market Vendors Sought
Spring is here, and Downtown Partners is gearing up for the 2012 season of the
Riverfront Farmers Market. The market, supported by First Federal Savings Bank
of Iowa, will take place at the Port of Burlington on Thursdays from 5 - 7:30 pm
beginning May 3. If you are interested in being part of the region’s most successful

Help Beautify Burlington!
Decorate a “County Seat”
On Saturday, April 21, participants of all ages are invited to come
out for the 12th annual Earth Day Clean Up. Volunteers can register
at the Port of Burlington beginning at 8 AM to get t-shirts, trash
bags and gloves. After going out to pick up litter, return to the Port
for a free lunch, music, door prizes, and a group photo. Individuals,
families, businesses, church groups, and organizations are all
encouraged to help out. For more information, call 319-753-8251. In
2011, volunteers picked up more than four tons of trash and collected
more than 3000 tires, making an immediate, positive impact in our
community’s appearance. Join your fellow citizens and lend a hand
in caring for our piece of the earth.
Do you have an artistic flair and a desire to see your work in public?
The Downtown Partners Design Committee is seeking creative
entries for the “County Seat Project” to decorate wooden benches.
The City of Burlington is providing benches to be placed at various
points downtown, and DPI will coordinate the project. “This
has been a popular project the past three years,” said Downtown
Partners Executive Director Steve Frevert. “We receive many
compliments about how the painted benches bring a little more
color to downtown.” Applications may be downloaded at
www.greaterburlington.com or call Downtown Partners at
319-752-6365. The deadline for applications is April 15. The chosen
entries will be unveiled in July.
Picture This! Downtown Photo Project
The Downtown Partners student board representatives are seeking submissions for a
special project entitled “Photography for the Ages.” Shutterbugs are invited to submit
their original photos related to downtown Burlington. The chosen submissions will
be included on a professionally printed poster and sold at the Snake Alley Art Fair
and through other local outlets. This is a great opportunity to share what you like
best about downtown! The submission deadline is May 1. For details about photo
requirements or questions, contact Michelle Randall at [email protected].

West Burlington Athletic Facilities
Upgrade Project
A group of active citizens are in the midst of an ambitious
fundraising project supporting activities and athletics in the West
Burlington School District. The committee is raising funds to
place an all-weather running surface on the track and purchasing
the necessary equipment to host track meets. The committee
is also planning to provide equipment for a new multi-purpose
facility which houses wrestling, weight lifting and batting cages
for off season hitting, as well as improving the football field
playing surface and building a stadium façade.
The committee is looking to raise $250,000 using numerous
events and a capital drive. Watch for flyers on an April 21 Fun
Run and pork barbeque at West Burlington HS. A brand new
Chevy HHR will be raffled, courtesy of Deery Brothers Motors,
at the West Burlington Fourth of July Celebration. Tickets are
only $10. Watch for locations where tickets can be purchased.
Some of our local business partners have already generously
contributed to this project, such as Farmer’s & Merchant’s Bank &
Trust, First Federal Bank, Ideal Ready Mix, USG, and Two Rivers
Bank & Trust. Visit www.wbschools.us for more information and
