Before you starthyperventilating over beach season,
first know that cellulite affects 90 percent of women
of every size. It also has less to do with fat than it
does your body's septae—a fancy word for the fibrous
bands that connect layers of tissue under the skin.
Unfortunately, in women, they pull at unflattering
perpendicular angles. "Fat cells bulge through the
bands, causing skin to look like a dimpled mattress,"
says Joshua Zeichner, a New York City dermatologist. Diet and exercise can help (more on that later),
but the latest bump-blasting technologies are doing
some serious heavy lifting. Follow our three-pronged
approach for fighting cellulite at home, and check
out the most effective in-office options that come
thisclose to eliminating the issue altogether.

ie Reason When fluid and fat
stagnate between those fibrous
bands, the area becomes crowded,
and fat cells bulge and look
bumpy, says Charlotte Prescott,
the spa director at Canyon Ranch
in Miami
The Fix Massage skin smooth
with Bliss's new handheld electric
roller (right), which mimics
Endermologie—a fluid-flushing,
deep-tissue-like treatment
performed by pros.
The Program. Used 10 minutes
daily, it offers results in a month.
Don't want to splurge? Preshower, rub a stiff body brush
(like The Body Shop Round Body
Brush, $12) over problem areas
in circular motions. In-shower,
use a soap with massaging nubs
(like Olay's, here); spend two
minutes on each side. .^^

The Reason When skin is firm,
it holds in fat. "Collagen is like
Spanx—the stronger it is, the
more difficult it is for fat cells to
poke through," says Dr. Zeichner.
The Fix The latest body creams
contain collagen-boosting
ingredients previously found only
in fancy antiaging face creams—
specifically peptides (used in
Skinceuticals' and StriVectin's,
below) and retinol (find
it in Chantecaille Retinol
Body Treatment, $95, and
Murad's.here).
The Program Used twice daily,
you'll smooth dimples in a few
weeks, says Dr. Zeichner. (When
outside, wear SPF: UV rays cause
free radicals to weaken collagen.)

CELLS
The Reason "The bigger your fat
cells, the more likely they are to
bulge through the fibrous bands
and create visible dimpling," says
Dr. Zeichner.
The Fix Scientists have
discovered that certain
ingredients—specifically
camitine, an amino acid that
turns fat into energy (find it in
Nivea, below); celosia cristata, a
tropical flower (in Clarins, here);
and zizyphus, extracted from a
buckthorn shrub (Dermadoctor
Shrinking Beauty, $58, is packed
with it)—can actually increase
your fat cells' metabolism,
making them smaller.
The Program Don't expect to
drop a dress size, but applying one
of these lotions twice a day for two
weeks could result in losing an
inch in the applied area.
NEXT-LEVEL SMOOTH
Beyond the ultraprogressive gadgets and creams, these cutting-edge
treatments are even more effective—and for the super committed.
Noninvasive Treatments
The goal of both Velashape (a combo of infrared light and massage) and
l-lipo (a laser treatment): to make fat cells more porous. "Fatty acids then
leak out of the cells and into the bloodstream, where they're burned off
by the body's natural metabolism," says NYC dermatologist Anne Chapas.
(Think of yourfat cells as grapes, which turn into raisins.) Both cost
between $300 and $800 and require twice weekly visits for a month.
Maintaining a steady weight is key—if you get bigger, so do fat cells.
The Ultimate
Cellulaze, a minimally invasive, onetime procedure, can deliver major
results: some people saw a 90-percent clearance years after surgery.
The doc slides a small fiber through a tiny incision that fires a laser,
which shrinks fat cells, loosens the septae's perpendicular pull, and
stimulates collagen growth, explains Barry DiBernardo, MD, medical
director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery, in Montclair, New Jersey.
(Post-op, expect three weeks of swelling, bruising, and compression
garments.) The procedure starts at $5,000.
