The Past and Present of Pálházi State Forest Railway
Surrounded by touristic attractions:
Originally, the railway line of the Pálházi State Forest Railway
(hence: PÁEV, from the abbreviation of its Hungarian name) was
designed for the conveyance of industrial materials. It was built in
1888, so this is one of the oldest narrow-gauge railways in
Hungary. Scheduled passenger transport on this railroad began
only in 1958, but nowadays it is one of the most often visited
touristic attractions in this mountainous region.
Many cultural values and natural phenomena can be seen in the wider
environment of PÁEV. Tourists can roam a lot in order to find out
about this region. Thus, Pálháza is extremely suitable for being the
centre where tourists can relax after hiking.
Its track can be found in the valley of Kemence-brook, from the
settlement of Pálháza to Rostalló, so tourists can get to know the
most beautiful parts of the Zempléni Landscape Protection Area.
A Forestry- and Hunting Collection can be seen on the station
which is at an industrial site. Kőkapu, one of the stations of the
narrow-gauge railway, is a popular destination of the region. Here,
a hunting-castle provides accommodation, and there is a lake
suitable for boating near this castle, too. Kőkapu is the starting
point of several footpaths leading to the romantic landscape of
Zemplén.
- Sátoraljaújhely: Alpine Sports Centre and Leisure Park: The longest
chair-lift course in our country can be found here. This carries tourists
to the alpine look-out tower and the ski courses. The length of this
chair-lift course is 1350 metres, and the height-difference is 374
metres. A rail-bound summer bob-track runs near this ski-lift (Alpine
Coaster).
- Telkibánya: The region of this settlement had gold and silver
mines once famous in Europe. These mines made Telkibánya
so rich that it was given the name “Golden-Buttoned Telkibánya”
which is used even nowadays. Its past is displayed in the
Museum of Ore- and Mineral Mining. The historical sights of
Telkibánya are the ruins of St. Catherine's Chapel which was
built in the Romanesque age, and also the unique cemetery in
which one can see carved wooden headboards. The natural
sights are the little Ice Cave, and the perlite flow on the surface
of a hillside which reminds us to the volcanic past of the area.
- Fűzér: The Castle of Füzér: The castle was built in the centre of
the settlement, at a height of 552 metres, before the Tartarinvasion. It stands on the top of a beautiful, steep-sided mountain.
From the tower of the castle, one of the most wonderful scenes in
Hungary unfolds before the visitors.
- Fűzérradvány: Károlyi-Castle and Castle Park: The KárolyiCastle was built in a romantic - eclectic style, and nowadays it is a
museum. This is one of the biggest castles in Hungary, and is
surrounded by a nearly 100-hectare arboretum.
- Hollóháza: Porcelain Factory and Porcelain Museum: Hollóházi
Porcelain is a company in Hungary that has an illustrious past. Its
china products are gently formed and tastefully decorated. These
products are designed for everyday use, and symbolize high
standards and elegance.
