A Message From the Principal
T
his time of year is a time of celebration as we send our Class of 2014 off to their next
adventures in greatness! Wekiva’s sixth graduating class continues to set the foundation of
academic and personal success that exemplify our Mustangs, and we are proud of them.
Next year our Laser Photonic Magnet and our Scholar Academy will continue to offer our
Mustangs unique academic opportunities to excel through Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement,
while our Industry Certification programs in Culinary Arts, Electronics, Agriculture, TV Production,
Health Occupations, Digital Art, Drafting and Business courses provide our students with ready
career certifications. With the additions of AP Environmental Science, AP European History and AP
Computer Science next year, our students have more rigorous choices than ever.
This summer a wide range of summer opportunities help our Mustangs get ready for this
rigor as well as to remediate. High School Summer School is from June 11- July 16; Algebra I EoC
and PERT Remediation is from July7-17; High School Success Camp is from July 7-17. Additionally,
we are offering AP Prep as we have before and something new: CLEP for those students who did
not pass AP tests from July 21-July 24. This CLEP opportunity allows AP students a chance to earn
direct college credit and should not be missed! Contact your AP teacher or Ms. Kim Santana at
407.297. 4102 with questions.
ALL Parents and students are encouraged to make an appointment on Mondays through
Thursdays throughout the summer to meet with their guidance counselors (guidance:
407.297.4903) before school begins on August 18 to assure that their schedule is accurate – every
Mustang received a list of 2014-2015 courses prior to leaving for the summer. This will allow us to
make full use of the school year from the very beginning. I hope, too, that our Mustangs are working
on their summer reading assignment which is the locally written novel Lay that Trumpet in Our Hands.
OCPS schools are open Monday–Thursday during the summer, and closed the week of
June 30.
Some key dates for next year will set the pace for a successful school year.
Freshman Orientation is on August 7 or August 8 from 9:00-Noon. You
may register on line. There will a separate, shorter meeting for parents
from 9-10 which includes a tour. All our Mustangs can pick up their
new schedules at Mustang Charge on Tuesday August 12, from
2:00 – 7:00 PM. This is your chance to meet teachers, visit
classrooms and get school materials. Please bring cash in order
to purchase spirit items. Attending this event is an important
way that, together, we Prepare for Greatness at Wekiva
High School.

The Wekiva PTSA will launch its Annual Membership Drive at the 9th Grade
Orientation. Look for PTSA board members at schedule pick up and other open events.
You may also send your membership to school with your child. 2014-2015 fees are
$10.00 for parents and $5.00 for students. Membership in the PTSA at the high school
level is completely different from the elementary and middle school. High School PTA’s
are supportive of the students and staff. However, the Wekiva High PTSA has chosen to
engage in several other very meaning ways:
1. The Wekiva High PTSA Scholarship valued $1,000.00 is given to one student PTSA
member who engages in community service efforts to support Wekiva students,
community, and or the community at large during the Awards Ceremony at the end
of each school year. Two fundraisers are held to support our scholarship.
2. Provide staffing for the College Career Resource located in the Guidance Office
3. Provides support for the Staff Welcome Back Luncheon and Staff Appreciation Breakfast
• Our board holds monthly meetings which are open to all members.
• Parents are asked to attend two meetings a school year one in the fall and one in the spring.
• We look forward to another successful school year with increased membership and
participation.

Guidance News
2014 Summer School Registration: Summer School Forms are now available. Students
who are in need to make up classes in Math, English, Science or Social Studies, sign up for
summer school today. Summer School forms are available in Student Services and are due
to Student Services by May 22, 2014. Students should see their guidance counselors if they
are unsure of what classes they need to take.
Summer Volunteer: Project Readiness
Project Readiness is an eight(8) week Summer Literacy Enrichment Program designed
to prevent “Summer Learning Loss.” This Program services elementary youth ages 6-11
years old while our newly designed VPK preparation program, Reading Readiness 2,
provides early literacy services to youth ages 3 to 5 years old.
We offer high school students the opportunity to earn community service hours
while also providing mentorship to younger students by performing as Reading Buddies,
Classroom Assistants to Certified OCPS teachers who partner with us each summer or
Recreational Specialists to youth 3 to 5 and 6 to 11 years old.

No school June 30 to July 3, Classes will resume July 7
*Summer School will be held Monday through Thursday with an added day on Friday, June 13.
Summer School Registration is due to Counselor by May 22, 2014, pick up forms in
student services.
Hours: 7:30am to 3:50pm.
Important Summer School Information
• No more than one day’s absence is permitted per session of summer school. Students
absent beyond that will be removed from summer school course and receive no credit.
• Four tardies equal one absence.
• OCPS dress code and code of conduct are applicable to all summer school programs.
• Students will be removed from summer school for any and all disciplinary issues and will
not receive credit.
• Parents must provide student transportation – no buses are provided for summer school.
• A morning snack and lunch will be available.
• Current Seniors and Freshman (Freshman with less than 4.5 credits) have first priority.
However, all Juniors and Sophomores should fill out the form and come the first day of
summer school (June 11) and will be admitted if space is available.
• Only core academics (English, Social Studies, Science, and Math) will be offered. No electives.
Must have received a D or F in core academic class to take it over in summer school.
Social Studies Update
The Social Studies Department welcomed Buchenwald Memorial educator Jan
Malecha on May 1. A select group of World History students were able to attend the
seminar where they learned about one of the more significant concentration camps in
Germany during World War II. Students analyzed primary source drawings and photographs
as well as artifacts found at the camp. The presentation was made possible through the The
Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida.
Skills USA Competition
Our congratulations are extended to the following dual-enrollment students:
Takiedria Thomas, Wekiva HS; Model - Dametra Presley, Wekiva HS; Bronze 3rd Place
-Halee Riche, Wekiva HS; Model. These students are a credit to the image of Westside
Tech, Wekiva High School, and Orange County Public Schools. We are very proud of their
accomplishment. As a result of their placement in this competition, they qualified for the
State Championship in April. Kudos to Takiedria, Dametra, and Halee!

News for Parents of ESOL Students
As you know, our ESOL program here at Wekiva has two levels, the sheltered and the mainstreamed strands. The
students are scheduled appropriately based on their scores on both FCAT and CELLA tests, both administered this spring.
When the results are received by the school, I check them and make the recommendations accordingly. This way they are
transitioned from sheltered to mainstreamed and eventually exited when they are ready. I invite you to call my office and
arrange a conference if you wish to discuss your child’s progress and placement for next year.

Wekiva Speech & Debate Headed to
Nationals & Accolades for a Successful Season
The award winning season closed in April for the Speech and Debate team. This has been a historic year for the team
as individuals are going to not one national tournament, but two national tournaments! Senior Jessica Jagdeo will attend
the National Speech & Debate tournament in Overland Park, KS; and juniors Sean Duncan and Katherine Ruckstuhl will
attend the Grand National tournament in Chicago sponsored by the NCFL. The team also welcomed new members into
the NSDA honor society, the National Forensic League, at the annual induction as well as honored graduating seniors who
contributed to the team over the course of their four year careers. The end of the year is always a time of bittersweet
moments as we celebrate success and prepare to say goodbye to fellow teammates.
Senior Jessica Jagdeo ended her four year career as a trail blazer being the first Wekiva student to qualify for the
National Speech & Debate Association national tournament. She was one of three students from public schools who
qualified in our region. The National Speech & Debate Tournament marks the capstone of high school speech and debate
activities for nearly 130,000 students around the country. To attend, students must place among the top competitors at
one of 110 District Tournaments. Qualifiers compete for more than $200,000 in college scholarships in a variety of speech,
debate, and performance events.
At the Grand Final national qualifier tournament in February, the varsity team set some new records. In Debate,
Cameron Davis was a semi-finalist in Lincoln Douglas debate. Student Congress had two outstanding legislators with semifinalists Jarai Njai and Jessica Jagdeo. We are also very proud of Sean Duncan and Katherine Ruckstuhl for qualifying for the
Grand National tournament in Chicago. Duncan will compete in Dramatic Performance, and Ruckstuhl will compete in Oral
Interpretation. They will travel to Chicago on Memorial Day weekend in hopes of earning a national title. This was our most
successful national qualifier tournament with seven students advancing to semi-finals and ultimately two becoming finalists.
Wekiva also served as the host of the Florida Novice State tournament where students from all across the state
battle it out for a state title. The novice tournament was for students in their first year of competition. There were over 550
competitors in attendance. Sophomore Kamarr Le’Vere brought home a 5th place trophy in Oral Interpretation. The team
also attended a regional tournament, the Griffin Growl Invitational, in which Le’Vere brought home a 1st place trophy in
Poetry Interpretation, and Sean Duncan earned a 1st place trophy in Dramatic Performance.
The culmination of this successful season saw many new faces in the program as well as the success of the varsity
competitors. On April 29th nine students were inducted into the National Forensic League which is the honor society for
the National Speech & Debate Association. We would like to commend the following students for their accomplishments
in competition earning a place in the prestigious organization.

Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States, 1492-Present” is a moving history of the
American people from “the point of view and in the words of-American women, factory workers, African
Americans, Native Americans, working poor and immigrant laborers.”

the important events and supporting detail. Your focus should be on what happen? (was it political,
economic, social/cultural) Where? (was it in the U.S? was it urban/rural) Why? (causes) And its

2. Is this book written from a traditional, revisionist or post revisionist perspective? (Explain).

What are we Reading this Summer?
Our Summer Book is Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands
by Apopka native Susan Carol McCarthy!
Students, Teachers, and Staff Members at Wekiva High School and Apopka High
School are reading a book together! Our high schools will host their first One Book, One
Community initiative in 2014. One Book, One Community is a reading and discussion
program that encourages all community members to read the same book at the same time to create
schoolwide and communitywide book clubs.
The author Susan McCarthy was born and raised in the rolling grovelands of pre-Disney Apopka,
Florida. The daughter of independent citrus growers, she recalls “picking fruit, packing bushel baskets and
pouring fresh-squeezed orange juice for the tourists” beside busy Route 441.
A graduate of University of South Florida (BA in English Literature), McCarthy wrote advertising for
newly-opened Walt Disney World in Orlando. Later, after successful stints at McCann Erickson Advertising in
Atlanta and San Francisco, McCarthy married a Californian and settled in San Diego as a full-time freelancer.
In 1991, McCarthy’s writing life took a dramatic turn. A batch of news clippings from the Orlando
Sentinel and a startling letter from her father detailed a series of shocking race crimes that occurred in Florida
in 1951-1952. (Records of an FBI investigation, a Grand Jury hearing, and KKK indictments had been sealed
for 40 years.) Her father’s account of his daring cooperation with the FBI became the basis for McCarthy’s
award-winning novel Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands.
Students, teachers, parents, and the entire Apopka community are invited to read the book, join book
discussions and attend special events during September and October, 2014. One Book, One Community
highlights include an evening program at Apopka High School on September 30 and school visits by the
author to Wekiva and Apopka High Schools. Other scheduled events include:
• Book discussions for students at the individual schools
• Book discussion groups with Wekiva and Apopka students via Skype/ Safari Montage Live web
conferencing
• Opportunities for interdisciplinary studies between English and Social Studies classes.

Excellent and Superior respectively.

Wekiva Band Earns Straight Superiors
in State Music Performance Assessment!
We are very proud of the Wekiva High School Wind
Ensemble for an amazing and memorable performance at the Florida
Bandmasters Association State Music Performance Assessment. The
band earned the highest rating possible, receiving Straight Superiors
from every single judge(who are all university level band directors from
around the country).
This is the first time in Wekiva’s history that the band has ever
achieved at this high of a level. This is also some of the most difficult
literature the band has ever performed. We are so incredibly proud
of these students for their hard work and dedication (many of whom
got right off the bus to play in the dress rehearsal for the musical). We
are also very grateful for the faculty, staff, and the community who
continue to support these students and show appreciation for the arts.
This is truly an amazing accomplishment for our students.
They represented Wekiva extremely well not only through their
musicianship, but through their display of character, dignity, and
respect. We should all be very proud of what these talented young
adults have accomplished!

During the weekend of January 31,
2014, our choral students participated in
the District Solo and Ensemble Festival,
sponsored by the Florida Vocal Association.
These students took on the challenge of
preparing solos and small ensembles to
perform for a judge, who scored them
according to a rubric set by the state. It is
truly a courageous and time-consuming
task to take on, and they certainly faced the
challenge. ALL of our students received either
a score of Superior or Excellent (the 2 highest

We are very proud of our student a cappella group, Wekiva Voices, who have
been selected to perform at the Downtown Disney Waterside Stage! This group, our
most elite vocal group at Wekiva, auditioned for Disney, and as a result of their selection,
they have the fabulous opportunity to perform a 30-minute set of their own repertoire
at the #1 tourist destination in the world on May 28. The ensemble members consist of

When: May 29th from 5PM – 7PM
Where: Wekiva High School in the Gymnasium (Building 3)
The cost is $15.00- If you are paying by check, please make checks out to
Wekiva High School.
We will start giving numbers out at 5 p.m. We will be using the first come, first
serve process, so be sure to get their early. To get a physical you MUST be in line no
later than 7!
Physical packets can be picked up in the front office or room 315 in the gym
hallway. They are also available online at wekivamustangs.com in the forms tab in the
Sports Medicine section. Print out all required forms. If the paperwork is to be filled
out on-site, students must have a parent present.
This will be the only school physical given by Wekiva High for the 2014-2015
school year, so make sure you don’t miss it!
Special Olympics
Results – February 2014
We had several athletes compete in the
Special Olympics competition held at Lake
Highland on Saturday, February 22, 2014. We
are very proud of the following placements:

Girls’ Weightlifting Excel Again and Again!
The Girls Weightlifting team are the 2014 Metro Champions. They are also the 2014 District Champions with three individual
champions. Seven of the girls qualified for the State Championship. At the state championship, the Lady Mustangs came in 5th place with
Alexis Pollock placing 3rd in the 154 weight class. Jarae Bargaineer is two-time State Champion! Jarae won the 101 weight class with a
300 total. Congratulations to these young ladies who performed outstanding all season!

Lady Mustangs Honored in Tallahassee; Boys Track travels to Jacksonville for State Meet; Cheerleading
Tryouts begin May 19
Basketball: On May 1st the Lady Mustang Basketball team, along with the girls team from Edgewater HS and
the boys team from Winter Park HS were honored at the Capital in Tallahassee. This event recognized all of the state
championship teams from Orange County. Congratulations again to these young ladies on a great season!!!
Track: The Boys Track team had seven athletes that competed for state titles on Saturday, May 3rd at the
University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Darrion Williams competed in the 100m and on the 4x400m relay team.
Naki Edwards competed in the 110m hurdles. The 4x400m team consisting of Darrion Williams, Willie Carmichael,
Jarod Bargaineer, and Daniel Winters aimed to shock everyone!
Cheerleading: Cheerleading tryouts will be held on May- 19th -23rd from 6-8pm each day. Tryout packets and
physical forms are still available on our website and in the Athletic office (room 402). If you have questions, please

Bowlers
Our Mustang Varsity Bowling
Team kicks off with tryouts starting
August 20th at 3PM with a parent
and student meeting at Brunswick
Wekiva Lanes. Following the meeting,
the students will bowl three games.
Tryouts will continue the next two
afternoons at the same time bowling
three games each day. At that time I
will cut both the boys and girls rosters
to the top eight bowlers.
The season will start the first
week in September and go until the
first week in November. We will
have approximately 15 matches with
practices in between. Our routine has
been to bowl (practice or match) on
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
from about 3PM till 5:30 PM. A schedule
will be provided at the meeting. The
cost to the student will be $35.00 for
the shirt. Most of my veteran bowlers
have their own equipment. So if you are
new you may eventually buy your own
equipment. The bowling fees are paid
by our team account.

I HAVE A SIGNED AND STAMPED
EMT CARD FROM THE ATHLETIC
TRAINER! The good news is that any
athlete can get a physical for $15.00
in about 30 minutes by attending our
physical night at the Wekiva Gym on
Thursday evening, 29 May from 5 to 7
PM. Once you do this you are covered
for the entire next school year for any
sport. If you wait until the first week of
school to do this you may not get to
participate in bowling.
Wekiva Lanes has an excellent
junior program from which most of
my team comes from, but I can teach
the game, and would love to help you
learn. The men’s team has gone to
state four years in a row with 3 district
championships. We have had 3 men
and 2 women go to state as singles
and last year one of our seniors, Ray
Repaci, finished second in the state.
The Mustang bowlers have a good
legacy and would like you to join their
future successes.

Mr. Steve John Receives Well-Deserved Recognition
We congratulate Inaugural Team Wekiva Team Member Steve John for being selected as the District’s Student Services Advocate of
the Year! As our SAFE Coordinator, Steve is at the heart of our school in many ways. As a part of guidance he supports counselors, holds
special student groups and teaches Peer Mediation. As a part of our leadership team, he supervises students in a proactive manner that keeps
our school safe. He works with our community and coordinates emotional, physical and medical needs as well as such basics as food, clothing
and school supply needs for many of our students. Steve always knows what is happening among our students, understands our students and
seeks to make them stronger! We are so very proud to have him as a part of our Wekiva school community!
Deja Miller is Our Girl!
Congratulations to Mid Florida Tech’s Hospitality team who won 2nd Place in the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s International
Competition. The competition was held April 9 – 11, 2014 at the Buena Vista Palace with high schools competing from 10 states and the
Bahamas. High school dual enrollment students – Agne Grunskyte (Lake Nona HS), Autumn Butler (University HS), Deja Miller (Wekiva HS)
and Sasha Gatti (Cypress Creek HS) won first place in the Florida State Competition which enabled them to continue on to the International
Competition. They each won scholarships totaling over $20,000 to various colleges, including San Diego University, Johnson & Wales
University, and Sullivan University. The team also brought home a first place medal in the challenging Knowledge Bowl competition, granting
an additional $1,000 Sullivan University scholarship to each team member. Way to go, Deja!
What’s Growing with Agriscience?
Coming up is FFA State Convention June29-July 4 at the Caribe Resort Hotel in Orlando. Being recognized are FFA members that
have competed in Career Development Events throughout the year such as Safe Tractor Operation and Extemporaneous speaking. Our
community service project; “Harvesting Change” has brought in hundreds of dollars, and we hope to place top 10 in the state and be
recognized on stage.
Come and visit during Mustang Charge August 12 and see our facilities, learn more about FFA, and pick up a livestock lease application
if you plan on keeping either poultry, sheep, cattle, rabbits, or swine on campus. We will have our first Central Florida Fair parent meeting
September 30 at 6:00 p.m.
Our Vegetable judging team of Amber Bryant, Caylah Farley, Carissa Vose, and Gabi Ius competed in Gainesville April 29. This CDE
tests them on kinds and varieties, disease, insects, weeds, and general knowledge. They placed in the 26th out of 80 teams and both Gabi
and Amber earned silver and bronze seals for placing in the top 100.
Industry Certification is available through the AGriscience class; next years’ offerings will include industry certification in Animal
Science, Agriculture Technician, and FNGLA horticulture. Students taking a Career Themed Course, such as Agriscience, for three years and
maintain a “B” average can qualify for Gold Seal scholarship, which is a branch of the state funded Bright Futures Scholarship program.

performance on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Junior Classical League District
IX Regionals at Winter Springs High School. Our prize-winning students
competed against the 350 students attending from Timber Creek, Winter
Springs, Olympia, Lake Brantley, Trinity Prep, Geneva Classical, Lake
Highland Prep,Windermere Prep, Lakeland High School, and Bishop Moore.
