We are discussing F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby”
(Call No.: FIT), probably his greatest novel - a book that
offers damning and insightful views of the American
nouveau riche in the 1920s. Fitzgerald seems to have had
a brilliant understanding of lives that are corrupted by greed
and incredibly sad and unfulfilled. The character Jay Gatsby
is really nothing more than a man desperate for love.

Letters from the Founder: Raffles’
Letters from The Bute Collection &
The National Library
28 January – 28 February, Woodlands Regional Library
For nearly 200 years, a collection of over 20
letters written by Singapore’s founder Sir Stamford
Raffles has been in the private custody of The Bute
Archives at Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute, Scotland.
These letters reveal many important insights
into the events and decisions that preceded the
Founding of Singapore in 1819.
The collection, together with Raffles’ letters from
the National Library, will be presented to the world
for the first time through a landmark exhibition by
the National Library of Singapore in collaboration
with the Singapore Heritage Society and Dr John
Bastin, the world’s leading scholar on Raffles.

Cultural Medallion for Literature in 1980. His

The Art of Chinese Paper Cutting
31 January – 28 February, library@chinatown
Paper-cutting is one of the oldest Chinese folk arts. It is a hollowart created with paper, foil, bark, leaves, cloth, leather and other
materials. The origin of paper-cutting can be traced back to the
sixth century AD. However, people believe that the actual period
should be dated hundreds of years earlier.
In the past, paper-cuttings were used as offerings to ancestors
and the Gods. Today, paper-cuttings are mostly used as gifts and
decoration. Through the skilful hands of paper cutting artists,
members of the public will get to experience the past and present
of Chinatown through their artworks at the newly opened library@
chinatown.
This exhibition is a collaboration between library@chinatown and
Golden Travel Services Pte Ltd. English and Chinese information is
available for this exhibition.
2D Art Extravaganza
1 February – 28 February, Tampines Regional Library
“Remittance letters”, also known as yin xin, are
letters or notes that overseas Chinese sent to
their families back in China, along with cash
and other goods. These letters and remittance
records offer a glimpse into the private lives of
Singapore’s immigrant workers from the late
1800s to 1970s – they are actual testimonies of
what life was like in Singapore. The letters are
a rich source of family history documentation.
As they, as they record the exchange between
our nation’s forefathers and their relatives – true
stories now unearthed and revealed for the first
time. The exhibition also details the role of the
Chinese remittance agencies back then: their
mode of operation and routes of delivery.

The Singapore
Cooperation Programme
4 February – 4 March, Bedok
Public Library
Everyone should be given
a chance to realise their full
potential, be it countries or
people. When Singapore
became independent, we
received technical assistance
from developed countries and
international organisations
such as the UN, which helped
us achieve our current level
of development. Today, we
try to give something back to
the international community
by sharing our development
experience through the
Singapore Cooperation
Programme (SCP). In this way,
we hope to help other countries
attain their development goals
and to make the lives of their
people better in our own small
way. Find out more about
this lesser known aspect of
Singapore’s diplomacy in this
exhibition.
Sumbangsih MAS: a Muhammad Ariff Ahmad
exhibition
4 February – 3 March, Jurong Regional Library
“Sumbangsih MAS” honours the life and works of Singapore’s
literary pioneer, Muhammad Ariff Ahmad. Affectionately known
by his pen name, MAS, award-winning writer, poet and novelist
Muhammad Ariff Ahmad has made significant contributions to
the development of the Malay literature, language and culture in
Singapore and the region. This exhibition will also showcase, for
the first time, some of his earlier writings and manuscripts, for
example, Taman Puspa, written in 1947 and his correspondences
with other prominent writers.

Title: Garden of Evening Mists
Author: Tan Twan Eng
Published Year & Publisher:
Newcastle upon Tyne : Myrmidon, 2011
When Teoh Yun Ling took early retirement from
the Supreme Court of Malaya, she was a widely
respected judge known for her clear and precise
judgments. Her colleagues did not know why she
chose to retire and return to the Majuba Tea Estate
in the Cameron Highlands. Tucked in the huge
estate was a Japanese garden that was called
Yugiri. It was created by Nakamura Aritomo, onetime gardener to Emperor Hirohito. He went to live
in the Majuba estate in the Cameron Highlands of
Malaya from 1938. He remained in Malaya even
after World War II ended. Yun Ling was met by
Fredrick Pretorius, whose uncle, Magnus, owned
the estate. Magnus was killed by communist
insurgents during the Malayan Emergency. Yun
Ling had been a Public Prosecutor in the early
days of the Emergency and had prosecuted many
communists. Many, including one woman insurgent,
Chan Liu Foong, were executed. Midway through
her career as a prosecutor, Yun Ling was dismissed
from service and she went to live in the Majuba
estate. Liu Foong’s sister was to take part in a raid
by the insurgents on the Majuba estate later on, and
nearly killing Yun Ling. Magnus died in a subsequent
raid. After that, Yun Ling left for Kuala Lumpur
to continue her career in law and was eventually
elevated to the Supreme Court Bench.
In her absence, Fredrick who despised the
Japanese garden, replanted many parts and
replaced the plants with very English plants.
This was to be a significant act in the story,
and will become clear when the reader pieces
together the disparate parts of the story.
When Yun Ling arrives at Majuba, she invited a
Japanese historian named Yoshikawa Tatsuji to
help her assess Aritomo’s artwork. In the course
of which, it transpired that Aritomo was not only
a skilled Royal gardener, but also an artist who
specializes in woodcuts. Tatsuji informs Yun Ling
that in Japan, such artists were also often experts
in a highly specialised form of tattoo known as
“horimono”. Yun Ling told Tatsuji that Aritomo had
done a “horimono” on her back and she wanted to
know what story that told. Yun Ling was suffering
from the onset of a mental dementia known as
“primary progressive aphasia”, and she gradually
began to lose the ability to recognize words. She
feared that her memory would be erased entirely:
“Once I lose all ability to communicate with the
world outside myself, nothing will be left but what I
remember. My memories will be like a sandbar, cut
off from the shore by the incoming tide. In time they
will become submerged, inaccessible to me. The
prospect terrifies me. For what is a person without
memories? A ghost, trapped between worlds,
without an identity, with no future, no past.”
Yet what she was able to recollect during the time
she spent with Tatsuji unveiled a past that was as
dramatic as it was mysterious. Her relationships
with Aritomo as well as Fredrick, and her experience
in a Japanese internment camp in the jungles of
Malaya during the war were interlocked aspects
of the plot. Tan Twan Eng forged two outstanding
characters in Yun Ling and Aritomo, yet both
seemed to be weighed down by a personal guilt.
Aritomo’s father built the warplanes that young
kamikaze pilots flew to their deaths. Aritomo was
scheduled to fly one but by a twist of fate his flight
was delayed and before he knew it, his good friend
Teruzen took his place. Yun Ling’s sister, Yun Hong,
was interned in the same camp and was used
as a comfort-woman by the Japanese soldiers,
sometimes five to six would be queuing up for her.
Yun Ling was spared for reasons she did not know,
but she was threatened that if her sister escaped, or
died, she would take her (Yun Hong’s) place.
When the war ended and in the midst of the
Malayan Emergency, Aritomo took Yun Ling as his
apprentice and proceeded to develop and create a
new Yugiri. The story at this point toggled between
the drama of the World War II and the Emergency.
Things became more mysterious and complicated
when an old friend of Aritomo arrived after the war
as the head of a project called “The Golden Lily”.
What was this project? Did it succeed, and what
part did Yun Ling and Aritomo play in it? Tan leaves
his readers gasping to the end.

Title: The Revenge of Geography
Author: Robert D. Kaplan
Published Year & Publisher:
2012 Random House
Kaplan’s book is a historical study of geography
with light shed by past historians such as Halford
Mackinder and Nicholas Spykman. It might also
be described as geographical history of peoples.
His thesis aims to discredit the view that the
modern world is flat, easily traversed, and that
therefore distinctions between the inhabitants
of different places are no longer relevant.
National borders are, in his view, artificial and
misleading. The forces of unity will ultimately
triumph, in an unplanned, sometimes violent,
and fast-moving fashion. On the subject of unity,
he sees convergence and not contradiction
between Mackinder and Spykman in that those
who control land mass from the “Heartland”
(Mackinder’s view) will have the power to move
to the coastal “Rimland” (Spykman) and from
there onwards to domination elsewhere.
This is a fascinating book although questions
might be asked as to whether Kaplan was
being fatalistic or exuberant when he finds
significance in events that occur where
they occur. For example, he first refers to
the demarcation boundary ditch dug by
the Roman general Scipio after defeating
Hannibal, then to the town of Sidi Bouzid
where a fruit vendor immolated himself and
thus started the flames of the Arab Spring,
emphasizing that Sidi Bouzid lay outside the
Scipio line, implying that the areas outside
that line are historically, if not inherently,
weak. This is not the only indication of the
stability and rationality of Kaplan’s judgment and
analysis. His views regarding Taiwan seem to
be based on an inevitable hostile confrontation
between China and Taiwan, dragging the USA
into the fray. Not many today shares that view.
China seems to know that it has time and –
using Kaplan’s toy idea – geography, on its side.
It has also economy on its side. With these,
China knows that there is no need to take Taiwan
by force.
Although this book is replete with interesting
historical accounts of how geographical
boundaries change over time, the reader should
scrutinise Kaplan’s motives and analysis with
care. It may be helpful to know, from Kaplan’s
own admissions in the book, that he advocated
the Bush administration’s attack on Iraq. He tries
to justify his position on the righteous stand that
he has seen how much worse Saddam Hussein
was than Syria’s Assad that he “became intent
on Saddam’s removal”. Almost immediately
after that admission, he conceded that with the
thousands of deaths and the expenditure of
trillions of dollars in Iraq, “It is candidly difficult
to see the ethical value in the achievement” (of
removing Saddam). But by the time reaches
the end of the book, Kaplan’s thesis (in his own
opinion) became a vacillation between restoring
America’s position, and finding a graceful exit
from its position of dominance. So far as the
latter is concerned, Kaplan turns inwards to
the demographic circumstances that America
has been thrust upon by the influx of Mexicans.
Like Samuel Huntington, he thinks that the
mass immigration of Mexicans into America is
a subject of great concern, so much so that he
devoted a large part at the end of his book to
it. Unlike Huntington, Kaplan believes that the
immigration of the Catholic Mexicans can be
countered by immigrants from the rest of the
world. Seeing America as the new Rome, he
wrote: “In the tradition of Rome, [America] will
continue to use its immigration laws to asset
strip the world of its best and its brightest, and
to further diversify an immigrant population that,
as Huntington fears, is defined too much by
Mexicans.”

Are you aware of the symptoms of anxiety? Examples of physical
symptoms include headaches, trembling and sweating. Some people exhibit behaviours
such as biting their fingernails or other repetitive actions when they are anxious.
Emotional responses such as anger, shame or surprise may also surface when reacting
to anxiety.
This book describes the signs and symptoms of anxiety and how mindfulness can
be used as a technique to calm down and relax. Being mindful involves paying close
attention to one’s thoughts, feelings and physical sensations so that one can respond
to any situation logically with a clear mind instead of reacting to anxiety-provoked signs
and symptoms.
By following the exercises in this book, readers can embark on a journey of selfdiscovery and develop a strategy against anxiety attacks.

Author: Adriana Trigiani
Publisher & Published Year:
New York: New York: HarperCollins, c2012
Call No.: English TRI
The Shoemaker’s Wife: A Novel is an enchanting novel about the
uncertainty, hard work, devotion and spirit of adventure that life entails.
It follows the lives of Enza and Ciro who lived in the mountains of Italy, met in the most
unusual circumstances, fell in love but separated abruptly only to meet again in New
York City. By then, however, the two characters are busy settling into their new lives with
their own different set of priorities, putting into question whether they can resume their
romance.
The novel is beautifully written and Trigiani creates a riveting tale that blends the ups and
downs of the lives of Enza and Ciro with vivid descriptions of the life, food and culture of
Italians immigrants in New York City during the Progressive Era and the First World War.
Readers will be mesmerised by the bonds that hold families, the hardships faced by new
immigrants, the luxurious life of the rich and the painful consequences faced by World
War I veterans. But above all, the reader will be reminded of the amount of hard work
and commitment that give meaning to life.

Title: Balik Kampung: Stories of Connection and
Disconnection with Different Parts of Singapore
Author: Verena Tay
Publisher & Published Year:
Singapore: Math Paper Press, 2012
Call No.: SING BAL
Balik Kampung – to return home – is exactly what it means. Comprising
of eight short stories by local authors, Balik Kampung is a powerful reminder of how
our sense of identity is irrevocably anchored to the places we grow up in. A museum
curator clings stubbornly to his painstakingly handmade replica of Changi village as
he remembers it. A girl returns, after a hit-and-run accident along Holland Road, to
narrate her story from the point of view of a ghost, and, in so doing, recalls her youthful
misconceptions about the grandiosity of death, tragedy and love. For a family of seven,
Redhill is a place of separate togetherness as each member offers differing accounts of
a home filled with love, hate, anger, dreams, bitterness, delight and melancholy.
While the tales are fictive and sometimes whimsical, the settings are nostalgically real.
Each story is a tribute to the forgotten alcoves of Singapore and they come together
to symbolise not the physical landscape of Singapore, but the one that exists in our
memories. The mix of speculative fiction elements with real settings makes Balik
Kampung a compelling read – each story lingers, leaving a profound poignancy that
invites us to look inward, to perambulate in our own reminiscences of place, home and
Singapore.

Some acts of generosity, however small, can have a huge impact. Chris Mburu, while
growing up in Kenya, is sponsored by a Swedish woman, to go to secondary school as
his family is much too poor to afford it. He later goes on to university and even secures
a scholarship to the prestigious Harvard Law School. Decades later, as a human rights
lawyer working for the United Nations, he pays it forward – establishing the Hilde
Back Education Fund (named after his benefactor) to give impoverished Kenyan children a chance for
higher education. The documentary follows the story of Mburu and Back, a Jewish German refugee in
Sweden in the 1940s who mentions that she donates money to worthy causes because of the kindness
and hospitality she received from strangers despite her status as a refugee. At the same time, the
documentary tells a parallel story of three children and their struggles to achieve good grades in order to

librarians then sieve through the collection, selecting titles and items that will help to enhance, enrich
and fill the gaps in our national collection, which is made up of Singapore-related historical and

One of the significant donors in 2012 is Paul Piollet, a French man who resided in Singapore in 1970s.
He donated 158 slides that depict Singapore in the 70s, 80s and 90s. As an avid photographer, he took
many pictures of street scenes, people and ways of life. These images were used in his publication,
Traditional Singapore, which was published in 1997. These images are a valuable contribution to
our collection, lending more perspective and understanding to Singapore’s early years as a nation,
tracking its transformation over thirty years.
