Wash, Shine & Dine Gala Event
Sunday, 29 June 2014
Do you like to look at beautiful vintage, classic and modern Mercedes-Benz
automobiles, socialize with the owners and dine on gourmet food? If so Sunday June
29, is a date you will not want to miss. We are gathering on two acres of lush green
grass at 10:00AM for a good old fashion look at my car show. We really enjoy works in
progress automobiles. Bring your pride and joy automobile out, clean or dirty, we don't
care if you don't, for a day of fun. There will be refreshments served and some prizes
awarded. If you have a friend or someone you know who has a Mercedes-Benz, invite
them to come and join us. Who knows they may like us so much they will want to be a
part of our club. Did you know that Smart cars are a part of the Mercedes-Benz family?

Here is a great opportunity to get out, enjoy a nice San Diego afternoon, make some
new friends and have some fun. We will take a scenic drive through picturesque North
County while testing our navigating skills. We will start leaving the B of A parking lot
around 10:30 AM. Cost for this even is $10.00 pp. We will gather for lunch at the finish of

A Day at the Races!
The 3rd annual San Diego Section at the Del Mar Race Track
Saturday, 2 August 2014

Just like last year, this is looking to be a great event! Your buddies at the MercedesBenz Club of America, San Diego Section have obtained a select number of “Reserved
Seats” in the Club House at the beautiful Del Mar Race Track. This is a great
opportunity to meet up with your Mercedes-Benz Club friends in a completely different
environment. (Because there is more to life than just cars!) Just a bunch of MercedesBenz owners getting to know each other better, sharing stories, having a few drinks, a
few laughs, and if you’re lucky… maybe even winning a buck or two. This year will be
even better as we have invited the Orange County Section to join us in the festivities.
We will be meeting for brunch nearby before the races to give you your passes and have
a bit of fun.
Each ticket is $20 and includes Club House admission, reserved seating and an
official Racing Program. Seating is limited so don’t miss out on a great day of horse

Celebrate the 5th Annual Legends of the Autobahn®
15 August 2014
The event MercedesHeritage.com characterized as “… ‘the best kept secret’ of the
Monterey Classic Car week.” This year’s Legends will feature the finest examples of
Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Co-hosted by MBCA, the BMW Car Club of America and the
Audi Club North America, this one-day MBCA national special event will put the spotlight on distinctive German marques.
To keep things fresh, you’ll notice a few new changes to the event. Legends will be
held at a new location in Monterey, California (to be announced soon) and for the first
time, a unified theme will be jointly celebrated by all three car clubs. In addition to
mingling among precision German cars, there will be food and beverage tents,
displays, Club and vendor booths, and more.
Registration opens March 1 on www.motorsportreg.com. Scroll down to “August 15”
then to “MBCA — Legends of the Autobahn” (not BMWCCA or ACNA). You can also
get a link to register on www.legendsoftheautobahn.org (click MBCA or the Mercedes
logo). All event details and information can be found on both websites.
A $75 registration fee will apply for entries in the judged Concours for 1994 and
older vehicles. A $40 registration fee will apply for entries in the “for display-only”
Corral (Mercedes-Benz vehicles of any age). Gourmet buffet lunch, VIP lunch, and
event polo shirts are optional. The discounted “early bird” registration deadline
is August 1, and all registration closes on August 8.

The Christmas/Holiday party this year will be held at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo,
the same place we went to last year. The reviews we received were very positive so we
decided to return. Plans are in the works to make this year’s party much more exciting, so
mark your calendar and we will see you at the club.

Coronado Motorcars on Main Street

It was a perfect day to show off and look at a great selection of makes and models
of cars in Coronado. May 4th was the Motorcars on Main Street car show in Coronado
and we had a few of our members come out and show off their Mercedes-Benz. Gary
Jarvis brought his award winning 1967 250SL, Bob Gunthorp brought his 200D stretch
limousine, Steve Ross brought his 1932 Packard and Brian and I brought our 1961
190SL. Bob Gunthorp served as Chief Judge and was busy all day. There was a variety of cars and it was fun day to spend with fellow car enthusiasts. At noon a group of
us walked over to the Hotel Del for lunch with members of the Packard Club where we
had a wonderful lunch discussing the cars and dining on great food. Other MB members who joined us for lunch were Joanne Barnard and Del and Mary Baumgartner.
Carlsbad Cars & Coffee

On Saturday May 11th, the San Diego Section had an unofficial gathering at The
Carlsbad Cars & Coffee in the Carlsbad Company Stores parking lot. In attendance
were (2) Mercedes-Benz limousines, and nice showing of SL’s spanning from 190SL’s
to 560SL’s, a new sedan or two as well as a lovely SLK350. We took over the back
side of the parking lot and spent the morning drinking coffee, having breakfast, talking
about cars as well as making new friends. It was a nice gathering.
We intend to do this again real soon!
Encinitas Classic Car Cruise Nights

On May 15th Downtown Encinitas held the first Cruise Night of the season. We
gathered at Charlie’s Foreign to enjoy the evening. Niko (the proprietor of Charlie’s
Foreign) pulled out all the stops. He presented us with BBQ braut’s and hot dogs as
well as sodas and an open bar. We enjoyed it all! We had very nice gathering of
Mercedes-Benz vehicles, so much so that they were spilling out of the parking lot and
on to the street. A special thank you to Bob Gunthorp of the Mercedes Club of America, San Diego Section and Jonny B of the W113 Group for getting things organized.
The cars were parked and situated so all attendees and spectators could enjoy them.
I believe a good time was had by all!

Wait a Minute

In 1953 Studebaker decided that the
three-pointed Star would look neat on
their new Starliner model. Although it
was a very nice badge, Daimler-Benz was
not in agreement, even though it is upside
down, and lodged a complaint. These
badges are very rare so if you see one
maybe you should get it if reasonable,
whatever reasonable is. Ironically two
years later, Studebaker became the
distributor of Mercedes-Benz
automobiles.

President’s Message
As always, thank you to all that attended the May events. We hope you all had a great
time. Just to keep everybody up to date, this month many members of the board will be
attending a Presidents Meeting being held in Palm Springs and hosted by Steve Ross, the
Southwest Regional Director. This is a strategy meeting attended by all of the Southwest
Region sections to discuss events, club culture, and the needs of members. The goal here is
to make the club active, valuable and fun for all to enjoy. I sure would like to hear input from
you (San Diego members) on topics such as why you joined the club, what is important to
you, what events you would like to see more of, and what you find valuable. As we look
toward the future, we would like our Section to be fun, relevant, informative and a family of
sorts. If you have a minute, please give me a call at (760) 599-0629.
Okay, enough about the business stuff. We have some fun events planned for you including the Wash & Shine Show on June 29th. Bring your car clean or dirty as awards are given
for both categories. Prizes for Best Project and New Car categories will be awarded as well.
Also please note a venue change for the July Board meeting: Diana & Brian Kruse have
graciously offered to host this meeting (see calendar). We’ll see you soon.
