Series launched Tuesday, August 4 with
"Annie" (2014). This
beloved second film
remake of the Tony
awarding winning
theatrical production
features the adorable
Quvenzhané Wallis,
Jamie Foxx, and a
Brooklyn resident,
Eden Duncan-Smith
who portrays Isabella,
the oldest of Annie's foster sisters. Ms. DuncanSmith received a proclamation from Council
Member Jumaane D.
Williams.
Tuesday, August 11
was Old School Night
and featured the 1985

martial arts musical “The
Last Dragon” with a special guest appearance by
The Last Dragon’s star
Taimak Guarriello in
honor of the film’s 30th
anniversary. Prior to the
screening, Council Member Williams presented
Taimak with a special
honor, and Canarsie’s own
Pierre Family- martial
artists Brandon, Aniesha
and Woodlyn Pierre provided a self-defense
demonstration.
Tuesday, August 18 was
Caribbean Night and the
movie shown was "Pan!
Our Musical Odyssey," a
docudrama by Kim Johnson. Children made colorful headpieces with representatives from the West
Indian American Day
Carnival Association. A
performance by the Soca
artist RemBunction made
the night special.

It’s an Urban Forest Out There, Folks!
YC Parks has taken on the formidable task of counting and mapping every street tree in our fair city.
This inventory or census of New York City trees, formally known as TreesCount! has taken place every
decade for the past 30 years. Since trees are the lungs of our planet the importance of their health cannot be stressed enough. Trees help keep the city cooler and the air cleaner, not to mention looking fetching
on well-maintained blocks. As this census includes trees in Brooklyn that means your help is needed in mapping the trees on your street. Sign up to become a voluntreer (get it?J)
You don’t need a course in landscape surveying, either. The website for TreesCount 2015 states that voluntreers are trained on how to identify and assess
street trees using simple site surveying tools and software to map them block by
block. I can attest to this being true, as I was trained and empowered within the
hour to get started right away on this rewarding work. Voluntreers are paired up
and are usually given two square blocks to survey at a time. I surveyed Eastern
Parkway and Classon and was amazed that there were 25 trees of about three
varieties on that one block alone. It was rewarding to upload the data and see
our information represented on the website digitally.
I would love to survey the trees that surround Amersfort Park. Perhaps, if we
get enough volunteers we can do the nearby streets as well. I would like to
make this a community project. Time is of the essence. We would have to do
this before the leaves begin to fall off the trees, as that is the easy way to deterTHE BEAUTIFUL TREES

East 43rd Street Community Garden Opens
T
he East 43rd Street
Community Garden,
located at 1087
East 43rd Street (between
Avenue I and Avenue J)
opened on June 27th after a
three-years long
process spearheaded by Council Member Jumaane D.
Williams. The space
is 8,000 square feet
and has a dozen
raised beds for rent,
a designated children’s garden, picnic tables, and garden benches.
The garden was built in
partnership with BrooklynQueens Land Trust and the
East 43rd Street Block Association Community Garden.
At the opening, Williams
said that the garden is to be
a “place for neighbors to
meet and cooperatively
work together, as well as
engage in invaluable educational, cultural and arts ac-
