2015 Canadian Junior / U25 Championship
There are many fantastic opportunities available at the 2015 Canadian Junior and
Under 25 Championships.
The male and female winners of the 2015 Canadian Under 25 Championships will
be nominated as a Canadian entry to the 2016 World Junior Championships
hosted in Queensland, Australia.
The inaugural Youth Development Squad will be determined during these
Championships. The top four young men and women placing at the Under 25
Championships and the top four male and female Juniors placing at the Junior
Championships will be named to the Youth Development Squad for a one year
term. These athletes will be eligible for selection to national development events that
may be run over the course of the year and may also be eligible for funding
opportunities within their individual provinces.

2015 Canadian Championship
The 2015 Canadian Lawn Bowls Championships will be held this year in beautiful
North York, Ontario. The host club will be the Willowdale Lawn Bowling Club, which
features three greens, one being artificial. It will be a great venue for this prestigious
event.
The greens will be available for practice on Sunday, August 16th, 2015 from 9:30am
to 3:30pm, to be followed by a welcoming banquet for participants in the evening at
the host hotel. Bowl and shoe inspection will take place on the greens on Sunday.
Opening Ceremonies will commence at 8:30am on Monday, August 17th, 2015.
Round robin play will be from August 17th to 21st, 2015 and medal games will be on
Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 with medal presentations and Closing Ceremonies to
follow.
The host hotel is Novotel North York Hotel, which is only a short walk away from the
host club. This will allow for the athletes, umpires and guests to travel to and from
the host club at their own convenience.

2015 Winter / Spring International Events
Tiger Bowls World Invitation and Bowls China Tour
Canadian fours champions competed in Hong Kong and Shenzhen China in March. The
women’s team consisted of Jean Roney, Clem Grant, Jordan Kos and Carolyn Jones and
won a silver medal at the Bowls China Tour. The men’s team consisted of Vince Mai, Kin
On Lau, Clement Law and Keith Roney.
2015 World Cup
Kelly McKerihen and John Bjornson represented Canada in Warilla, Australia at the 2015
World Cup. The indoor singles tournament was played at the Warilla Bowls and Recreation
Club. McKerihen finished with a 5-2 record and placed second in her section.Bjornson had
many close matches, but in the end finished with a 2-7 record and placed eighth in his
section.
2015 World Junior Championships
Pricilla Westlake (Delta, BC) and Jake Schuknecht (Chesley,
Ontario)
made
Canada
proud
at
the
World
junior
Championships in Queensland Australia.
There was a combination of Singles and Mixed Pairs and
both Jake and Pricilla had their fair share of wins and losses.
The due saw improvements throughout the competition and
ended the week strongly with many lessons learned.
Pricilla’s thoughts on the championship:
“I think as the week went on I got better and better and my last three games were my best of the
tournament. I played a tight game against Australia only losing 21-17, then I went on to win my final
two games against Scotland and New Zealand. It felt really good to end the tournament on such a
high note.”
Jake’s take away from the competition:
“My biggest takeaway was how different the game is on fast greens. In Ontario, I enjoy playing a
yard through to rest out a bowl and sit for shot or a small trail of the jack. On fast greens those are
the hardest shots imaginable. Playing against the best in the world, you need to be on the jack.”
Pricilla is a member of the High Performance National Squad and Jake is a member of High
Performance Development Squad.

On May 20, Vancouver South LBC
hosted the Canadian Women’s Field
Hockey Team as they hit the greens for
some team bonding and to learn about
the sport of Lawn Bowls. With over 30
girls participating, it was a great
opportunity to bring two very different
sports and put them together to learn
about the rules, techniques and finer
points of the sport.
We will be working with our Head
Umpire, Nick Watkins to respond to
all inquiries.
Stephanie Andrews, the assistant coach
of the Women’s field hockey team
thought it was a great day for the
women; “Its great that we can get the
girls out here and learn something new,
do a bit of team bonding and meet some
new people”.
Bowls Canada Boulingrin is excited to
announce that National Chief Umpire,
Nick Watkins, has been accredited as
the first International Technical Official
(ITO) Assessor in North America.
Prizes were given out to some target
Champions and of course the ever
popular “Spyder” finished off the day
with some lucky winners walking away
with some t-shirts.
“I am very privileged to be the first ITO
Assessor in North America,” said
Watkins, “I am looking forward to
bringing my experiences to Canada and
excited for the next few years to certify
many level 2 umpires as ITOs and have
them represent Canada and bowls on
the world stage”.

2015 Updated Domestic Regulations
1. Use of Groundsheet
o For outdoors play, portable groundsheets do not need to be fastened to the
green, and may be temporarily removed upon completion of an end.
o The groundsheet may be placed at a different position at the start of each
end, unless otherwise directed by the Controlling Body or greenkeeper, but
always at least 2 metres from the rear ditch and at least 23 metres from the
front ditch.
o The groundsheets must remain in use until the end of the game or until the
Controlling Body decides that they are no longer needed.
2. Skip Duties Regarding Score Card
o Skips can transfer the duties of marking the score card described in law
40.1.7 to another member of the team.
o They must make sure that these duties are transferred to players whose
positions, in order of play, are the same in each team.
o If the skips cannot agree on who should keep the score card, then the skips
in both teams must keep the score card as described in law 40.1.7.
3. Use of Approved Footwear
o Shoes must be flat-soled with no separation between the front sole and heel
(i.e. flat from toe to heel). Walking shoes and sports shoes are acceptable;
sandals with a heel strap are also acceptable, as long as the back strap is
firmly fitted when worn. Flat-soled wedge shoes (i.e. shoes that increase in
height from toe to heel) are not acceptable. The width of any heel must be at
least 50% of the widest part of the sole.
o The sole may possess a shallow tread pattern or indented grooves to
improve traction, without damaging the green. A channel in the centre of the
sole is acceptable; protuberances that extend out from the sole are not
acceptable. Edges around the sole, and around any channel, need to be
rounded.
o Brand name bowling shoes that are listed as approved on a current list,
published by a member national authority, are generally acceptable. Shoes
that have been re-soled to ensure that they comply with the laws of the sport
are also generally acceptable.
o Umpires must use their best judgment and not unduly eliminate members
from play unless they have a shoe that would clearly damage the green.
Common sense must prevail.

Consolidated Conditions of Play Update
The Conditions of Play have been updated to reflect the 2015 Laws of the Sport of
Bowls Crystal Mark 3rd Edition and also revised to align with international
standards where events serve as a Canadian qualifier. All revisions are marked
with a “[4/15]”.
Significant changes include:
1. A “win” will now be worth 3 points as per the 2015 Laws of the Sport.
2. The Juniors and Under 25’s format of play has been aligned with the
international standard found at the World Junior Championships. This
includes playing to 21 shots instead of sets play and revisions regarding the
respot of the jack.
3. In order to align with other national bowls authorities, a “deliberate delay of
play” clause has been included.
4. An increased age limit for the Senior Triples (effective 2016) to reflect the
changing demographic of aging Canadian seniors and to provide more
opportunities for senior Canadians to compete.
Macky Singh Joins Bowls Canada as Performance Director
On April 1, 2015 Macky Singh became the new Performance
Director at Bowls Canada Boulingrin.
Macky was the National Technical Director and National Team
head coach for the New Zealand Universities Women’s National
Team for ten years. During this time, Macky led the women to
three World Universiade Games in Korea 2003, Turkey 2005 and
Thailand 2007 and has coached in 71 international
matches. Macky also spent one year as the High Performance
Director Women’s Soccer and Head Coach for the Malaysia
Women’s National Team and U19 where he was responsible for
developing a 4-year National team Technical Plan, establishing
centralized training camps in addition to educating and mentoring
future national team coaches.
“I am excited to join the team at Bowls Canada!” said Macky, “my goal as Performance
Director is to provide administrative support to the National Team coaches to create a
culture of excellence for the national team athletes to gain podium success at international
events. I look forward to establishing platforms and pathways for up and coming athletes to
embrace high performance culture through all levels from club to national.”
