Brandon Miller-Davis
Dana Beeler
Growing up in a musical family, Brandon was destined to catch the “music
bug”at a young age. Steadily releasing new material since his debut in July 2013,
Brandon released his first full-length album “Stories From The Living Room” in
April 2014 and just released a self-titled EP this August.
This Halifax-based, country-tinged songstress is the total package: powerful,
down-home vocals, impassioned lyrics, touching melodies and a great sense of
comfort and redemption. Long-lasting songs sung by a strong woman who can
teach you a thing or two.
Breagh MacKinnon
Dave Sampson
An award-winning vocalist, pianist and songwriter, Breagh Mackinnon released
her ECMA nominated “Where the Days Went” in 2012. In late 2014, Breagh formed
East Coast Roots/Pop power trio Port Cities with Dylan Guthro and Carleton Stone.
The band is set to release their debut record, produced by Gordie Sampson in
early 2016.
Dave Sampson writes heart-on-your-sleeve folk/pop songs, delivered with a
captivating and authentic voice that could blow down a brick house. His knack
for crafting simple ear-worms and his high-energy shows have been winning him
fans across Canada over the past 5 years.
Carleton Stone
Elijah Wohlmuth
After releasing his third successful solo album, the award-winning “Draws Blood”
in 2014, Carleton joined his friends and collaborators Breagh Mackinnon and
Dylan Guthro in forming East Coast Roots-Pop power trio Port Cities. The band is
set to release their debut record, produced by Gordie Sampson in early 2016.
Elijah Wohlmuth oozes soul. With a voice reminiscent of old style RnB mixed with
the modern approach of Frank Ocean and Chris Brown, Elijah’s smooth voice was
featured on Classified’s hit 2013 self-titled album and Mike Boyd’s “Note The
Sarcasm”. Elijah is a talented songwriter and performer. Keep an ear peeled for
new music from this promising young talent.
Christopher Brown
Christopher Brown is a singer/songwriter from Springhill, Nova Scotia. Brown experienced success with his first solo release “Found in the Woulds”, with his song

Eric Stephen Martin
Seamus Erskine
Eric Stephen Martin lives and breathes many different sounds. Within the past
few years Eric has gained experience by playing with many different artists
in the industry. Eric gained a following after releasing his “Light Of Day” EP in
2012. In 2014 he released his self-titled EP, recorded at The New Scotland Yard in
Dartmouth, NS.
Seamus Erskine is the lead vocalist and guitarist in Halifax-based Psychedelic
Rock band, The Brood. Despite only being a couple of years old, they’ve already
been nominated for two Music Nova Scotia Awards: (New Recording Artist of the
Year, and Alternative Recording Artist of the Year), and won the first ever Casino
NS Artist In Residence Program.
Jodi Guthro
Dylan Guthro
Jodi comes from an extremely musical background. Over the past few years she’s
shared the stage with country music heavy hitters such as (her father) Bruce
Guthro, Johnny Reid, Dean Brody and more! Jodi has been busy writing songs for
her debut and recently attended the 2015 Gordie Sampson Songcamp where she
wrote, performed and recorded songs with Nova Scotian artists like Laura Roy,
Kyle Mischiek, her brother: Dylan Guthro, and Gordie Sampson himself.
Laura Roy
Laura Roy is a pop powerhouse with songwriting chops to match. She spent
the last year in Toronto writing and collaborating with many of Canada’s finest
songwriters and working on her upcoming self-titled debut. An attendee of The
Gordie Sampson Songcamp and multiple SAC songwriting camps from Toronto to
Montreal, this is only the beginning for Laura as both a songwriter and performer.
Over the last three years, Dylan Guthro has released an award winning debut cd,
co-produced his first recording, worked alongside Gordie Sampson in his studio
in Nashville, written with David Myles, recorded a song with Classified, and toured
internationally. Most recently, Dylan formed a band with close friends Carleton
Stone and Breagh Mackinnon. Port Cities will release their much anticipated
Gordie Sampson produced debut early in 2016.
Willie Stratton
Willie Stratton is a force to be reckoned with. Conjuring up a whirlwind of early
jazz, blues, and folk styles, the stomping troubadour comes to the stage with a
banjo in one hand and a guitar in the other and channels the spirits of long dead
old timers like Dock Boggs, Charley Patton, and Fats Waller to name a few; bringing with him technical prowess and musical whit of a bygone era.
Natalie Lynn
Nicole Ariana Curry
An attendee of The Gordie Sampon Songcamp and Songwriting Association of
Canada camp in Toronto, Nicole recently signed with indie electronic/hiphop
label Dream Sequence Records in Austin, TX. 2015 has seen the release of two
singles featuring Nicole’s vocals via DSR as well as features in several of Dingus’
online mixes including his OVO Radio debut show on Apple Music 1. Nicole is set
to release an EP produced by Eric Dingus in early 2016.
Since the release of debut single and music video “Runaway”, Natalie Lynn has
been winning over audiences with her pop rock aesthetic and electrifying live
performances. With her four-piece band in tow, Natalie delivers hook-heavy
earworms that intricately meld high energy riff rock, soaring pop choruses and a

combination makes for the lively style of playing Gillian is all about.
Making music reminiscent of the best of The Civil Wars, Fleetwood Mac and Crosby
Stills Nash, Port Cities offers a harbour for lovers of great music with heart. An
exciting new group, this rootsy-pop trio brings together the award winning
talents of Carleton Stone, Breagh Mackinnon, and Dylan Guthro.
9:45 PM - 10:15 PM Ben Miller & Anita MacDonald
12:15 AM - 1:00 AM The Town Heroes
Combining the fiery edge of the Scottish Border pipes with the rich sounds of
the Cape Breton fiddle, Ben Miller and Anita MacDonald join together, merging
traditional influences from Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island, as well as the
Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
The Town Heroes are a Halifax based alt-rock power duo crafting catchy,
hard-hitting and anthemic songs that sound like a party you wish you were at.
Self-described as “the most noise two Cape Bretoners can make,” that noise is a
cascade of passion, urgency and belief in their songs.
10:30 PM - 11:00 PM Jordan Musycsyn
1:15 AM - 1:45 AM Pretty Archie
Jordan Musycsyn is a Folk singer songwriter performer. He tells stories thru

relatable to a large demographic singing ballads or fast tunes that are witty and
smart.
Pretty Archie is a Country/Folk band from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Their honest,
fun loving and at times heartbreaking music, finds a unique common ground in
the blurred genres of Country, Folk, Bluegrass and Blues. Pretty Archie’s entertaining, high energy, foot stomping live shows leave the listener wanting more.

9:00 PM - 9:30 PM Owen Meany’s Batting Stance
11:15 PM - 11:45 PM Walrus
Engaged, electrically charged acoustic guitar, teeming with emotive energy
rounded by percussion and bass. As Owen Meany’s Batting Stance, each
performance is a contract to burst the bubble between audience and performer
through relatable, punching songs. Lyrically oriented, using songs to cradle
narratives with conventional chords and unconventional structure.
The band somehow mix gentle, Brian Wilson vocal melodies and orchestrations
with out-of-the-blue punk thrash parts that keep listeners guessing. The high,
winsome vocals and chiming 12-string Rickenbacker certainly conjured late ‘60s
cloudy folk-pop, but the rest of the band infused the songs with sharp edges.
12:00 AM - 1:00 AM Wintersleep
9:45 PM - 10:15 PM Dance Movie
Dance Movie’s second album was produced by John Goodmanson, after he
finished the Sleater-Kinney reunion album. It is a big catchy rock record in the
vein of Wild Flag, its sister band Ex Hex and early Rilo Kiley. Dance Movie is Tara
Thorne, Trevor Murphy and Rebecca Zolkower.
10:30 PM - 11:00 PM Floodland
Ten years ago, members of Wintersleep began writing songs in a small apartment in Halifax. A decade and five albums later, Wintersleep – who can now
be referred to as ‘JUNO Award winners’ -have performed for audiences across
North America, Europe, Asia and The Late Show with David Letterman. They’ve
toured with Frightened Rabbit, Wolf Parade, The Hold Steady and Editors. After an
extended break, new music can soon be expected with the pending release of
their 6th album.
Astute and adept, this four piece take their sound and its delivery as seriously as
audiences allow. Fluctuating through lyrically thoughtful ballads, furious noises- 1:15 AM - 1:45 AM The Brood

you into realms of subconscious memories of another world. Vintage synth,
hypnotizing percussion, swirling guitar riffs, haunting vocals and bass notes that
oscillate from the bottom of your feet and settle deep within your chest.
Glory Glory’s live shows induce mass euphoria. A four-piece indie rock band who
dance and sweat as much as their audience, Glory Glory fits on your playlist
between Tame Impala and Caribou. With new music produced by Justin Gerrish
(Vampire Weekend, The Strokes), Glory Glory is your new favourite pick-me-up.
9:45 PM - 10:15 PM Arsoniste
12:00 AM - 12:30 AM Vogue Dots
In this Halifax-based synth-pop duo, classically trained Rachel Sunter uses vocal
effects and layered synth parts to create hypnotic soundscapes full of eery
harmonies and gorgeous chord progressions. Into this, guitarist/producer Alex
Meade weaves his sometimes gritty, sometimes ethereal guitar tones over a bed
of hip-hop-flavoured electronic beats.
Vogue Dots is a collaboration between producers Babette Hayward and Tynan
Dunfield. Their songs juxtapose pastoral sensibilities with busy, precise pop.
Producing electronic fixations with surrealistic edges, the result of Vogue Dots’
dynamic is nocturnal; filled with swooning emotion and throbbing with meticulous layers of dark, beautiful noise.
10:30 PM - 11:00 PM JonahMeltWave
12:45 AM - 1:15 AM Scientists of Sound
THIS ARTIST PRESENTED BY
JonahMeltWave is a 19 year old sample-based
electronic producer from La Baie St-Marie NS. He mixes
together eclectic bits of sound and 90s pop into nostalgic chillwave tunes from
the future. JonahMeltWave can pump you up or chill you out, it all depends on
who YOU is.
Scientists of Sound is rapidly establishing itself as one of the most innovative
electro-dance acts in Canada. Their signature anthemic electro sound unites
raging guitar hooks, heavy club grooves, complex loops, eclectic polyrhythms
and gang vocal melodies, all executed with topnotch musicianship.
1:30 AM - 2:00 AM JOYFULTALK
JOYFULTALK is a curious dialogue modified to make a little universe of itself;
wordless rivers of analogue tongue, glitching fields of electric grass, an orbit of
junked vocabulary.

10:15 PM - 10:45 PM Alana Yorke
Morgan MacDonald writes lyrically driven songs about the messy
parts of life. He has triumphant songs about death, hesitant
songs about love, and fearless, wide eyed songs observing the
world around us. His songs have a diversity of influences and
arrangements with his honest voice always resonating through.
With dream-like vocals and a minimalist piano style, Alana Yorke
combines irresistible hooks and captivating rhythms to draw
listeners into her hypnotic, beautiful world. Armed with a strong
musical vision, Yorke steers her music between sparkly synthpop, grand cinematic gestures, and stripped-down intimacy on
her debut release, Dream Magic.
8:45 PM - 9:15 PM Gianna Lauren
Originally calling Alberta and Ontario home, this Halifax songstress has manufactured a sound that is anything but “just”
singer-songwriter. Lush arrangements and restrained vocals
create a haunting ambience.
9:30 PM - 10:00 PM MAUNO
11:00 PM - 11:30 PM In-Flight Safety
Halifax, Nova Scotia is a coastal city – a Canadian indie music
hub since the 1990’s, nestled among ragged shorelines of the
Atlantic Ocean. From this home base, In-Flight Safety has been
crafting thoughtful, melodic indie rock that’s made its way across
North America and Europe.
From all over eastern Canada, Mauno came together in Halifax in
the fall of 2014 to carry out mutual weirdness in the context of a
three-piece experimental pop band.

For nearly four decades Morgan Davis has been on the road travelling across
Canada, the United States and Europe. His performances draw from a rich tradition of country blues, as well as his own contemporary songs infused with wit
and a large dose of humour.
John Campbelljohn’s sophisticated and progressive approach to song writing
gives him a distinctive edge, mixing rock, blues, reggae, celtic & country into his
signature style. The result is a sound that can pummel the audience into submission one moment, while captivating them with its subtlety the next.
3:00 PM - 3:30 PM Dan Doiron
A blazing spitfire guitarist with a six-string wall of sound who combines modern
blues and rock influences to create his unique sound. This Cape Bretoner, addicted to the raw emotion of the electric guitar, plays it full of energy, moving in
and out of funk, rock, and scorching ballads.
3:45 PM - 4:15 PM Mojo Martin
For the last decade, guitarist Chris Martin has been hard at work ensuring that
the spirit of blues, swing and rockabilly is alive and well in eastern Canada.
Martin is known as a front man, producer and record label owner, winning MNS
2014 “Blues Recording of the Year” for “Young Blood”.
4:30 PM - 5:00 PM Catahoula Brown
Catahoula Brown is the old blues spirit inside South Shore musician, Chris Weagle.
Raised on a diet of true roots music from Hank Snow and Hank Williams to Son
House and Sonny Boy Williamson, Brown has a real feel for dusty back road balladry and from the gut soul.

12:00 AM - 12:30 AM Rain Over St. Ambrose
A killer guitarist, a classically-trained pianist, a sincere, dynamic songwriter,
and an incomparable singer; Christine Campbell is truly a rare, multi-faceted
talent. Ranging from a raspy, rocking powerhouse to a soft, heartstring-tugging
chanteuse, she brings entire audiences to a hush - and then to their feet.
Drenched in coastal haze, Still Waking Up, the sophomore full-length from Rain
Over St. Ambrose reverberates with anthemic sing-alongs, swampy fuzzed-out riff
rock, and swirling synths. Raw, contemplative, and feverish, the album once again
showcases the band’s commitment to “honest, from-the-gut rock and roll” (The
Chronicle Herald).
9:45 PM - 10:15 PM The Stogies
Thousands of mid-summer nights spent perched in a hazy rural Nova Scotian
shed listening to Zeppelin, the Stones & the rest of rock n’ roll’s pioneers allow
the Stogies’ to command their craft wielding loud guitars, sweeping organ, pulsing bass, thunderous drums and wailing vocals.

Luring you in with her powerful and expressive voice, Jessie Brown is a siren

singing for Queens Of The Stone Age, this Doom Soul trio will entice you to shore,
crush your expectations, and keep your heart as a souvenir.
In direct opposition of hollow corporate hard rock stands Halifax band Old Blood.
Relentless in their pursuit of crafting the soundtrack for the thinking person, Old
Blood delivers a prolific body of work steeped in agony and grace.
11:15 PM - 11:45 PM Lead Mule
Amidst the winding rural roads of Short Beach, Nova Scotia, the echoes of rock
‘n’ roll bounce between the battered asphalt and the sea-soaked spruce trees.
In an area steeped in musical tradition, Lead Mule, a four-piece outfit from these
outskirts of Yarmouth, champions the legacy.

9:00 PM - 9:30 PM Scrapes
11:15 PM - 11:45 PM Quiet Parade
scrapes are a five-piece rock band stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Channelling
a true appreciation of living on the east coast, scrapes specialize in driving pop
songs that speak with a loud and honest voice. The result of lifelong friendships
and a mutual appreciation of cars that aren’t quite vintage, scrapes combine
sturdy rhythms, hot guitars and bossy vocals in a sound that honours rock’s most
modest heroes, dad’s old records, and the more surprising aspects of the 1990’s.
Quiet Parade is a bleeding-heart, indie folk band from Halifax, NS that performs
fog-laden songs about long-standing ghosts, lingering memories, and living
history. In the lines between glimmers of hope and pangs of regret, Quiet Parade
weaves their narrative and introspective rural anthems.
9:45 PM - 10:15 PM The Mike Bochoff Band
In June 2013, singer-songwriter Mike Bochoff teamed up with Mathew Budreski
and Stephen Hare to record Start ‘em Young. Since its release in March 2014, the
band has been performing all over the Maritimes and have shared the stage with
Dave Hause, Royal Wood, Alert The Medic and many more.
10:30 PM - 11:00 PM Beauts
beauts are a Halifax-based rock band that formed in the spring of 2015. The
group’s music can be described loosely as indie-rock, but more specifically
the sound mixes anthemic, punk with slow-building energy. Their debut EP was
release in August 2015 and can be heard here: https://beauts.bandcamp.com/
12:00 AM - 1:00 AM Rich Aucoin
Rich Aucoin takes five years of relentless worldwide touring and distills big ideas
philosophy majors like him have into 10 dance-pop songs and 60 minutes all
pointed toward the same goal: to gather the things that keep us afraid and apart,
and use them to pull us together.
1:15 AM - 1:45 AM Quake Matthews
The 26 year old Nova Scotia native first made a name for himself in the underground battle rap scene in his early teens, triumphantly progressing to his
current breakneck beats and unadulterated lyricism. His raspy voice and raw
emotion have given him a signature sound, creating a captivating listening
experience for his audience. He is currently working on an upcoming Ep with hip
hop superstar Classified.

Party Boots is quickly becoming one of the most entertaining bands in Canada.
Their sound? Upbeat, worldly dance music with an inviting pop sensibility. Tastefully they find a common thread that connects diverse music together and brings
forward a signature live sound of their own.

Highly calibrated team of artists that have achieved a lot in their short time of
being together. Their drive, work ethic, unique style and diversity is what differentiates them from other artists. Not only have they built a name for themselves,

but Keith is open to any performance on the Music Nova Scotia stage.
With an interpretation, style, and energy all her own, Gillian Head delights

11:00 PM - 11:30 PM Gabrielle Papillon
Dan MacCormack is a Halifax-based songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. His
debut solo album, Symphony of Ghosts(October 2014) incorporates themes,
characters, imagery, and language from David Adams Richards’ books, and was
produced by Jason Michael MacIsaac. Dan’s expressive and original guitar playing is a strong compliment to his unique approach to songwriting.
Hailed as “one of the finest new songwriters in Canada,”
(Tom Power, CBC) ECMA and Music Nova Scotia Awardnominated songwriter Gabrielle Papillon sings stories real and imagined. Words,
melancholy melodies, and lush harmonies are her currency. Papillon’s fifth
offering, ‘The Tempest of Old’ is big and dark, orchestral and defiant.
8:45 PM - 9:15 PM Kim Harris
11:45 PM - 12:15 AM Christina Martin
Piano and acoustic guitar driven melodies with elements of pop, folk and soul,
delivered by lush instrumentation and powerful, dynamic vocals.
With her fifth album ‘It’ll Be Alright’ and live show the artist has reached a place
where the ghosts of her musical heroes freely mingle with pop-rock’s modern
architects. A powerful album, a killer band – for Christina Martin, things are
shaping up to be a lot more than alright.

7:00 PM - 7:45 PM Garrett Mason
Garrett Mason has followed in his father’s footsteps, at least where talent is
concerned. Not so much a follower of the blues “lifestyle,” Garrett is a vibrant and
talented guitar player with the makings of a long career ahead of him. His 2005
Juno nod was seen as perhaps a little premature considering Downchild, Jim
Byrnes and Rita Chiarelli were in the running as well. Garrett has since proven
himself more than worthy of the accolade.

Presenter: Claudia Seeber - Trade Commissioner, Embassy of Canada (Berlin)
Germany is one of the most attractive business
locations in the world. It is Europe’s biggest
economy and largest market. As the third largest
music market in the world, Germany holds a
wealth of opportunity for musicians. In 2013, the
country made 1,023.9m ($1,361.1m) in recorded
music revenue and grew 1.1%, according to IFPI
figures. While the recorded music market is still
pretty profitable (73% of Germany’s recorded
music revenues last year came from the physical
market and 21% from digital), the live market is
even bigger. Germany has 80 cities with more
than 100,000 inhabitants and 13 metropolitan
areas with more than 500.000 people. Known for
its diversity, international acts have a decent
chance of gaining traction in the country. And
there are no radio quotas that say stations must
play a certain amount of German artists.

Music Nova Scotia is hosting a town hall to generate
constructive conversation about gender issues in the music
industry. The goal is to work towards collective solutions to
overcome roadblocks and challenges.
In April, the inaugural Women in the Music Business Town Hall
was held in Halifax. The conversation will continue during NS
Music Week, including a panel of local women in the music
industry as well as international voices.
This will not be just about airing grievances, but identifying
and acknowledging common gender issues within the local
music industry, using real-life scenarios to propose action or
change and offering support to each other moving forward.
There will be a break-out session after the panel that will
allow the audience to gather in small groups to discuss
issues. All are welcome, however, this session is directed
towards women working in the music industry and priority will
be given to those from that group to speak.

Dr. Kristin Lieb (Associate Professor of Marketing Communication at Emerson College) provides a rare lens on the rigid
packaging process that transforms female artists of various
genres into female pop stars. Stars — and the industry
power brokers who make their fortunes — have learned to
prioritize sexual attractiveness over talent as they fight a
crowded field for movie deals, magazine covers, and fashion
lines, let alone record deals. This focus on the female pop
star’s body as her core asset has resigned many women to
being “short term brands,” positioned to earn as much money
as possible before burning out or aging ungracefully. Lieb
explores the sociological forces that drive women into these
tired representations, and the ramifications on the greater
social world.

Why, despite the number of high profile female rock musicians, does rock continue to be understood as masculine?
Why is rock generally assumed to be created and performed
by men? Marion Leonard explores different representations
of masculinity offered by, and performed through, rock
music, and examines how female rock performers negotiate
this gendering of rock as masculine. A major concern of the
presentation is not specifically with men or with women
performing rock, but with how notions of gender affect the
everyday experiences of all rock musicians within the context
of the music industry.

Many venues were designed at a time when the technical
demands and cross-semination between artistic disciplines
was less prevalent. This session will explore the challenges
and opportunities of evolving artistic practices, inter-disciplinary work and how to find and expand markets for such
offers from the perspective of the arts presenter.
