Rhythms of the East
Many of the countries of Southeast Asia are
known for their distinctive styles of dance. Among
the most recognizable is traditional Thai dance,
which includes elaborate costumes and smooth
movements. These dances were often exclusively
for the entertainment of the court, and only in
modern times were performed for the public.

On the cover: Fishing boats create a scene of beauty on the coast of Thailand’s Phuket; (clockwise from top left) finding a perfect accessory in the Princess boutiques; a
traditional Thai dancer weaves a story in movement.

The Thai isle of Phuket, known as the “Pearl of
the Andaman Sea,” is one of the world’s great
beach and resort destinations. Here you will find
some of Southeast Asia’s most beautiful beaches,
surrounded by jungle wildlife and incredible
scenery, including the dramatic limestone cliffs
and islets of Phang Nga Bay National Park.
When you’re not beach bathing, try snorkeling
or going on an elephant trek through a local
rubber plantation.

Crossroads of the World
The island-state of Singapore is a study in
contrasts. This ultra-modern metropolis
is home to four million people hailing
from across the globe. Traditional Chinese
shophouses can be found alongside Buddhist
temples, Arab bazaars and Victorian colonial
mansions. In the shadow of the city’s
trademark skyscrapers, you’ll find beautiful
gardens, ethnic neighborhoods and one of the
world’s best zoos. And don’t miss some of the
finest duty-free shopping on earth.
