Shifa Foundation has been registered since 1991 as
a not-for-profit charitable organization with an aim
to provide a helping hand to our under privileged
brethren in the fields of Healthcare and Education.
Since its inception its activities have been focused on
improving health and education status of the
population of Pakistan, particularly the lower socioeconomic group.

Message from the Chairman
In the last one year Shifa Foundation has covered milestones that we could not even
dream of achieving. Shifa Foundation Annual Report 2013 is an attempt to share our
journey and our accomplishments with you.
Shifa Foundation has been registered as a not-for-profit charitable organization
since 1991 in Islamabad, Pakistan. It has been providing free services to patients
including but not limited to OPD (All Specialities), IPD (All Specialities), Diagnostics,
Medications, Surgeries, etc. We are also providing free medications to Lukemia
patients and working towards cure and prevention of Thalassemia.
Shifa Foundation in response to the urgent needs of fellow citizens extended its
support to the most vulnerable population of Sindh, Punjab, KPK and Gilgit-Baltistan
through its Humanitarian Assistance Program. Our project staff not only offered
their medical expertise but also extended a much needed moral support to the
victims of various disasters. Through its various projects, Shifa Foundation has
surpassed the benchmarks set by other organizations in this sector.
All this was made possible by our hardworking staff and the support extended by our
donor agencies. I wish to express sincere appreciation to the entire team of Shifa
Foundation for their commitment and active participation in making this program a
success and introducing sustainable solutions.

Healthcare services in Baltistan, even at the
primary healthcare level have always had much Partners:

Gilgit-Baltistan is one of the remotest regions in Pakistan. The
area and its conditions are harsh and healthcare facilities are

For a good part of the year, the whole region is cut-off due to
landslides blocking the roads that lead out of the region. Air
travel, while inaccessible to the local poor population, also holds the same uncertainty factor
due to weather conditions.

To combat the fostering healthcare issues especially those requiring specialized tertiary level
services, Shifa Foundation devised an elaborate and innovative strategy using state of the art
high-tech equipment. Through the “telemedicine” project, Shifa Foundation catered to the
needs of thousands of patients, providing them with readily available healthcare services
while minimizing any hindrances. It is no coincidence that this project earned the title of “the
most innovative project” during UNOCHA's internal global workshop. The project was
nominated out 1,346 pooled fund projects around the world.
Apart from this, Shifa Foundation renovated and re-equipped 3 health facilities and trained
healthcare providers. Base stations were established at DHQ Khaplu and Civil Hospital Astore.
Mobile health teams were sent to the community from these base stations for screening,
health education and health promotion sessions to highlight issues of public health
importance.
In addition, Shifa Foundation has also improved
maternal, neonatal and child health services by
improving the system of availability of lady health
workers (LHVs) and ensuring safe deliveries.
Furthermore,

communication (IEC) materials, village health
committees and public health awareness
methodologies were developed in order to educate
the local population on various aspects of health.

Shifa Foundation also established the DEWS
system in collaboration with WHO in order to
rapidly detect and control outbreaks through
adequate preparedness and focused utilization of
technical staff and rapid response.
The project catered to the needs of more than 200,000 individuals and almost 1100
patients were provided specialized healthcare facilities through telemedicine.

TELEMEDICINE: AN AWARD WINNING INNOVATIVE
APPROACH TO HEALTHCARE
Telemedicine is an IT based approach to
providing healthcare from a distance. It
combines technologically advanced tools in
health and IT services to materialize the
concept. The basic concept is that in remote
areas where access is difcult for specialized
medical professionals, telemedicine units are
mobilized. These units enable consultants of
different specialty to reach out to needy and
deserving population in far flung areas of
Pakistan.

system with diagnostic equipment ranging from
stethoscope; eye, ear, throat and skin cameras
to ultrasound equipment etc. It connects the
two ends of the telemedicine system i.e.
patient's end and the doctor's end. Only a
trained technician is required in the eld to use
this equipment to provide real time images to a
consultant in another facility.

the telecom sector, wireless
internet facility is now available in
most of the country including
Gilgit-Baltistan. The people of
Gilgit-Baltistan welcomed this idea
and greatly appreciated the facility
that provided this service. With
great coordination from the GilgitBaltistan government, Shifa
Foundation was able to deliver the
project's objectives while
simultaneously assessing the
prospects of expansion of this
facility to a much wider audience in
Gilgit-Baltistan and Sindh.

Shifa Foundation had been working in the region of Gilgit-Baltistan. It had been gathering and
assessing data about the prevalence of various diseases in this region. It assessed the data
gathered from the health facilities in Baltistan and identied the high incidence of diseases
such as cardiovascular diseases, stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes etc. Experts at
Shifa Foundation suspected contamination of water used by people in this region. Water that
was being used in this region for drinking purposes was then tested. It was found that in many
villages it was contaminated with high concentration of metals especially Arsenic.
Arsenic and many of its compounds are potent
poisons. They occur naturally in mineral rich bodies Partners:

called leukonychia may occur. When the poisoning becomes acute, symptoms may include
diarrhea, vomiting, blood in the urine, cramping muscles, hair loss, stomach pain, and more
convulsions. Almost all organs of the body are affected by arsenic poisoning. Arsenic
poisoning at its worst can eventually lead to coma and death.
Arsenic is related to heart disease (hypertension related cardiovascular diseases), cancer,
stroke (cerebrovascular diseases), chronic lower respiratory diseases and diabetes.
Shifa Foundation identied the village of Katpana as worst hit in this regards. The population
displayed signs of severe arsenic poisoning with reported cases of death occurring regularly
due to the contamination. Taking into account the serious health hazards in the village,
including increase in mortality, Shifa Foundation, with help from WHO, established a clean
drinking water supply scheme in this region. Apart from a clean water bore, a total of 21 subtanks and one main water reservoir were constructed, along with required plumbing,
pipelining and primary and alternate water pumps.
The results are extremely positive, with reports of
signicant decline in arsenic related health issues
and mortality in this area.

Being a seasonal disease, diarrhoea / cholera
during its peak, claim thousands of lives each
year, majority of those children. During this time,
the available facilities at government health
centres are unable to cope with the influx of
critical patients in the endemic prone areas.

To lend a hand towards the unied efforts of major
stakeholders in endemic prone areas, Shifa Foundation established its specialized Diarrhoea
Treatment Centres(DTC) within the existing government healthcare facilities. These served as
centres for identication and treatment of
diarrhoea in Rajanpur, Alipur (Muzaffargarh),
Skardu and Ghanche. Apart from providing direct
treatment to the patients, this project aimed to

The series of floods during the 2010 to 2012 period, brought
unprecedented suffering and devastation to the country and
exposed Sindh to one of the most ill-recognized but
nevertheless deadly and morbid killer; malnutrition. In a
country that is already on the top among the list of countries
suffering from malnutrition, province of Sindh takes the title of
the worst hit region.
Recognizing the imminent threat to this region, Shifa
Foundation mobilized its resources to do its part to combat
malnutrition in Umerkot.

This intervention focused on alleviating malnutrition through a
community based model. In this, Shifa Foundation is involved
in developing the communities' capacity of understanding and combatting malnutrition, and
at the same time providing direct therapeutic treatment to those in need. In this way, Shifa
Foundation aims to address both the current crises as well as provide a sustainable solution to
the future generations.
This project is still in progress in Umerkot, where Shifa Foundation is providing these CMAM
services in 24 union councils out of 27. Currently,
more than 1100 villages have been reached where
more than 54,000 children and 36,000 pregnant
and lactating women have been screened for

Malnutrition is considered to be the underlying cause of more
than 50% death in children and pregnant and lactation women
(PLWs) in Pakistan. But even though the dangers of
malnutrition have been identied and documented, the
conditions mainly remain unaddressed especially in the rural
context. The province of Sindh being the worst affected
because of its historic and continuing division between classes
of few extremely rich in comparison to the masses of very poor
has been classied by WHO of having alarming nutritional
indicators normally seen in the state of emergencies. This

After a year-long intervention, Shifa Foundation screened more than 81,000 children and
51,000 pregnant and lactating women for acute malnutrition. It identied and enrolled more
than 15,000 children and 6000 pregnant and lactating women in the treatment regimen. The
recovery ratio among the enrolled was immensely positive. Apart from these, around 119,000
mothers and caregivers were imparted health and hygiene education. Shifa Foundation also
played an instrumental role in polio eradication initiative by the government of Pakistan by
identifying and referring children who missed the campaign and generating awareness on the
matter.

District Mirpurkhas

Mirpurkhas was one of the worst affected districts in the
series of floods that struck Sindh in the 2010 to 2012
period. After the catastrophes, most of the health
facilities became inundated and access to primary
healthcare for the already distressed population of
Mirpurkhas became impossible.

Realizing the need, Shifa Foundation, through a mobilebased health unit setup, initiated the provision of primary
healthcare services including but not limited to:
• Provision of integrated primary healthcare and nutrition services with focus on pregnant
and lactating women and children under 5,
• Taking emergency preventive health measures to reduce risks of epidemic outbreaks,
• Antenatal and postnatal consultations,
• Family planning consultations,
• General OPD services
During the project tenure, more than

In the aftermath of the catastrophic floods, the already
distressed population of Sindh was about to face another peril.
The shelter-less population was at a high risk of being exposed
to acute respiratory infections (ARI). Children under the age of
5 were the most vulnerable. Statistics showed that the major
direct cause of mortality among this age group was pneumonia
and other respiratory infections.
Shifa Foundation began mapping the high risk regions and
identied the districts of Badin, Tando Allah Yar and Matiari in
dire need of support and interventions. Shifa Foundation established specialized ARI centres
in the District Headquarter Hospitals of the identied districts. The units aimed to provide both
inpatient and outpatient services as required.

The government of Pakistan and other national and

to complement their efforts, Shifa Foundation sought to Department of Health
establish a accessible facility for provision of emergency
obstetrics and newborn care (EmONC). Shifa Foundation Staff:
started providing its services in two districts of Sindh i.e. 98 National
Mirpurkhas and Umerkot. It also mapped the health facilities & International
that were partially functional and re-established them by
providing them with adequate staff, medications and other supplies. In areas where all
available health facilities were either damaged or otherwise not functional, Shifa Foundation
instead opted to provide these services through mobile health units.
It was also felt that these areas represented another social dilemma tied with the objectives of
this intervention, i.e. the prevalence of gender based violence among the population. These
cases remained highly unreported due to the social taboos attached to the issue, which is why,
Shifa Foundation sought to create a safe environment for women and establish a safe
pathway for them to report such cases.

Sanghar is one of the most remote districts in Sindh, where
obstetrics, gynecology and newborn health services are
practically non-existent. Apart from most of the health facilities
in the region being run down, some have not been operative for
the last 15-20 years and the local beneciaries have to rely on
expensive private run health facilities. The area has harsh
terrain with scattered population and has grave security
concerns that need to be tackled before any health
interventions could be executed.
Shifa Foundation, in an effort to establish a model district in terms of mother and child health
opted to intervene in the district of Sanghar. It provided 24/7 basic and comprehensive
emergency obstetrics and neonatal and child healthcare services as per the international
protocols.
Despite the hardships that were faced, the intervention led forward by Shifa Foundation was a
success, reaching out to more than 45,000 patients. Shifa Foundation accomplished its
targets specically:

Basic and comprehensive emergency obstetrics, neonatal and child healthcare services
were established in 7 Government health facilities.
•
Through these sites, antenatal, postnatal and family planning consultations were provided
and deliveries were performed by trained birth attendant.
•
In facilities that provided comprehensive EmONC services, skilled gynecologists were
appointed to provide emergency and optional c-section and other advanced Obs/ Gyne
services.
•
Hygiene kits, newborn kits and safe delivery kits were distributed

In conjunction with its research and publications wing in District Nowshera of Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa province, Shifa Foundation has devised and implemented a research project.
The project aims to assess the alignment of community health needs and the health services
that are available in the district. It documents any gaps identied for immediate intervention
or future consideration depending on the severity. It also analyses the various trends
observed in this regard. The project was based on coordination with government health
facilities and on acquiring data from the District Health Information System(DHIS) and
relating it to direct data gathered from the community (based on an exhaustive survey using
statistically valid methodologies).
Prevention of Rabies after Dog-bite Exposure (PRADE)
Recently launched by Shifa Foundation, PRADE aims to educate general public and healthcare
professionals on rabies and its prevention. It aims to help the victims of dog-bite with
immunization when required. The program also aims to create a local registry of dog-bite
cases.

although the incidence of dog bites in the country
is very high. In 2010, more than 97,000 recorded
cases of dog bites were reported by basic health
units alone. Research by WHO has revealed that
most of the population are either unaware of the

Healthy Child Initiative (HCI)
Healthy child is an initiative by Shifa Foundation, which in collaboration with schools,
corporate entities and donor organizations takes measures to ensure the health and wellbeing of children across various schools in Pakistan. The goal of the initiative is to promote a
healthy society by ensuring that every school going child is in good health.
In order to achieve its goals, Healthy Child Initiative adopts a multi-pronged strategy in the
form of: Primary Prevention Initiatives which include measures that limit the incidence of
disease and disability in the population by reducing or eliminating the causes; Secondary
Prevention Initiatives which include measures that reduce the progression of disease through
early detection; and other initiatives, such as nutrition planning, one-sport for every child and

28 year old Nafeesa, mother of ve from
Rawalpindi had been coming to Shifa
Foundation for her antenatal visits for
management of anaemia. At the time of
delivery, her husband, a janitor in CDA
decided for home delivery. After attempting
to deliver at home for approximately 20
hours, she was brought to the Emergency
Room for the delivery of her fth child. By
the time she arrived, her uterus had
ruptured. It was her luck that the doctors in
the Obs/Gyne department were well
trained and well equipped to diagnose her
condition and to operate quickly. Through
their timely interventions they managed to
save her life and that of her baby. Her family
was supported nancially by Shifa

Our Success
Suleman, 24, has 9 siblings and lives in a small village in District Nowshera. He works
with his brothers as a low income laborer to support his family. Two months ago he
started developing recurrent episodes of fever and nose bleeds. He went to a local
hospital in Peshawar where he was diagnosed with Leukemia. His family was unable to
afford the treatment and they began searching and contacting all forms of treatment
facilities available. He was refused treatment by various well renowned cancer centers in
the region. The family sold their home in the village but was still unable to raise money
for his treatment.
Disheartened by the response they heard about the Shifa Foundation from a family
friend. With high hopes, Suleman and his brother Pir Syed visited Shifa Foundation and
asked for their support. Pir Syed says he went into the doctor’s ofce, and said, “I don’t
have much money and my brother has cancer. We have been all over the country looking
for someone who can help us. We have heard good things about this organization. Can
you help us??” The patient was admitted for chemotherapy.
Suleman is currently stable and is on his way to a permanent solution through bone
marrow transplant.

Cardiology department is a comprehensive facility that is equipped to treat patients with
congenital, rheumatic and degenerative heart disease supported by a team of cardiologists
with vast experience from Pakistan and abroad. The spectrum of services ranges from
outpatient consultations to emergency treatment and inpatient admissions. Clinical

Razia Bibi, 42 is from a very remote village of the Jhang district.
She has been a widow for the past 15 years and was supporting
her only child by working as a seamstress, as recently as ve years
ago. That is when she slipped and fell on the stairs in her home;
afterwards she felt extreme pain in her lower back and was unable
to walk. She thought that it must be a temporary side effect of the
fall and as her body healed itself she would start walking. She was
wrong, the fall had caused her vertebrae to collapse and the
condition wasn’t likely to heal on its own.
For 5 long years Razia has been unable to walk unassisted, she
became dependent on her family for performing the most basic
tasks such as going to the bathroom. As a result of lying on her
bed, she developed bed sores on her back which meant that she
was constantly in a state of excruciating pain. Her family took her
to various hospitals but unfortunately they botched up her care,
there was no relief. That was when her family learned about Shifa
Foundation and brought her here. She was admitted and a

success and she is currently undergoing physiotherapy daily so
that she can regain the use of her legs. When we asked her how

Abdul Wahid fell from second floor and injured his right leg. His
leg was broken at multiple places. He was taken to a local
private clinic in Faisalabad where he was told that his leg will be

same. Abdul Wahid and his family refused to accept this
decision bearing in mind this would cause a lifetime disability to

The founding fathers of Shifa Foundation envisioned an
institute of higher learning providing quality education in
the medical arena. This dream became a reality in
December 1998 when Shifa College of Medicine (SCM) was
established.

The well-developed infrastructure of Shifa College, state of
the art facilities and the new integrated curriculum being
taught by one of the best faculties of the country allows students to grasp the concept of
medicine and health in a more comprehensive way.
The faculty of SCM provides diversity which is the real essence of a good educational institute.
Brilliant doctors, with appropriate high qualifications and exceptional teaching skills provide a
multifaceted academic outlook. Similarly, students hailing from multinational and multicultural backgrounds also bring diversity to the institute.
Shifa College of Medicine has attained nationwide recognition by adopting an integrated
learning approach. The Curriculum is delivered in a system based spiral, modular format
transcending subject boundaries. This is in full conformity with international trends in medical
education and this approach is fully endorsed by the HEC and PM&DC in its new 2005curriculum guiding principles. The curriculum continues to evolve in synchrony with national
and international trends in medical education.
Shifa College of Medicine has been approved by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. It is
also registered with the World Health Organization (WHO) and included in the list of FAIMER
International Medical Education Directory.
Shifa College of Medicine was previously affiliated with Bahria University and is now affiliated
with Shifa T ameer-e-Millat University .

Shifa College of Nursing
Shifa College of Nursing (SCN) is one of the leading nursing educational institutions of
Pakistan. SCN is committed to provide enabling environment and learning opportunities to
nursing students and faculty members to enhance their educational and professional career.
The mission of SCN is to prepare nurses, who are
committed, caring and competent professionals and are
capable of facilitating community in meeting their
healthcare needs. The College will remain dedicated to
provide and improve access to high quality, cost effective
care by preparing nurse leaders and practitioners of
national and international standards.

SCN was established in January 2004 to provide nursing students with professional skills for
the betterment of health conditions in Pakistan. The College has its custom-built premises at
the Shifa International Hospital, courtesy of the hospital, and has fulfilled the requirements of
Pakistan Nursing Council. SCN has 21 fulltime faculty members.

excellence and rigor. Moreover, the latest

integration with state of art Shifa International
Hospital (SIH) and Shifa College of Medicine
(SCM) and well reputed faculty members
blended with national and international
linkages make Shifa College of Nursing the
ideal place for quality education in Nursing.
KPK Government has recognized SCN as a
partner in improving patient care in their province. In this regard, the provincial govt. has
agreed to sponsor 25 students each for both BSN & Post RN programs. This scholarship
program will continue till 2015.
Programs Offered:
BSN Degree Program: College of Nursing offers a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing
(BSN) program which was started in 2004 with the commitment to equip nursing students
with sound knowledge, and competency in providing quality nursing care. The 8 semester
curriculum is in line with the Regulations of the Pakistan Nursing Council and international
standards for B.Sc. degree programs. The College graduated its first batch of BSc. Nursing
Students under Faculty of Health Sciences, Bahria University in December 1997.
Post RN BSN: SCN also offers Post RN BSN Program. The entire course is spread over 4
semesters.
Shifa College of Nursing was previously affiliated with Bahria University and is now affiliated
with Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University.

Ta m e e r- e - M i l l a t Fo u n d a t i o n
(TMF) was established as an NGO
in 1987 with a vision of education promotion
in Pakistan. TMF aims to provide quality
education to every individual in all academic
and professional areas without the
discrimination of gender, race, religion,
socio-economic status and ethnicity.
TMF is committed to providing education with
particular emphasis on character building
through establishing Community Primary
Schools, Model Schools, vocational training
centers, technical institutes, literacy centers,
teachers' training institutes, culminating into
premier higher education institution with the
objective to develop the human resources in

Shifa Foundation is a proud
sponsor of Shifa Tameer-e-millat
University which is jointly sponsored by
Tameer-e-Millat Foundation and Shifa
International Hospital. It is a federally
chartered, multi campus university. The
campuses boast state of the art facilities and
equipment and highly qualied teaching
faculty.

its charter, to create and disseminate
