Miami Beach, Florida-The first annual Latin Urban Mix took place
Miami Beach, Florida- The first annual Latin Urban Mix took place Saturday, March 11th 2006 at the Albion Hotel in sunny Miami.
To say the event was a success would be a vast understatement. Urban Latino industry figures and tastemakers from throughout the
United States and Caribbean were in attendance to strengthen the movement that is both reggaeton and Latin Hip-Hop as well as
recognize the efforts of influential DJs who have broken barriers and helped take the genre to the masses. Honored were DJs Camilo,
Kazzanova, Tony Touch, DJ ProStyle and DJ Sama.
The brainchild of Kevin “Pills” Montano (Creative Media Group) and Alan Solis (Urban Icons Marketing) and sponsored by Hennessy
and Sony BMG, the Latin Urban Mix lived up to its name; being transcendent of a simple music event by providing those in attendance
with a cultured display of hip hop elements, including photography and graffiti by Oliver Rios, Melisa Winitzky and Martha Cooper, and
breakdancing by Miami Breakers Entertainment.
One of the most memorable moments of the day was the panel discussion that included the above-mentioned DJs and mun2 VJ Frankie
Needles playing moderator. Never one to bite his tongue, Needles provided the DJs with complex questions covering many key issues
within the industry in which they answered provocatively, yet with an honest report.
Throughout the day, attendees were provided with unique networking opportunities due to an incredibly diverse array of industry
figures including artists, label reps, marketing agency reps, and prominent DJs. Artists in attendance were: Voltio, Don Dinero, LDA, Boy
Wonder, Dynasty y Padrino, Aztek, Taino, Sito, and newcomer Judiny, while DJs in attendance included DJ Dennis Da Menace, DJ
Mingo, DJ Surge, DJ Willie, DJ Non Stop from Chicago, DJ Lobo and many more.
The event lasted into the night, in which guests were wined and dined and played host to a poolside fashionshow by Azzure.
In succession was the main (and most anticipated) of the Latin Urban Mix: the awards ceremony. With a general feeling of esteem and
excitement in the air, the DJs were awarded
justly in front of their industry peers.
The crowd remained vibrant into the night, and was entertained by the sounds of DJ Ed. Then, after a full day of publicity, press and
networking, most left to prepare for the Calle Ocho festivities on Sunday.
A $5000 dollar check was donated to the Jason ‘DJ Threat’ Campbell foundation, a scholarship fund dedicated to Brentwood High
School students in Long Island who wish to study music.
Special thanks again to major sponsors Hennessy and Sony BMG, as well as supporting sponsors Bridgez Magazine, Un Chin Magazine,
red star, Urban Box Office, and Universal Music Latino/Guitian Brothers Music for supporting what was a historical and definitive day
in the Urban Latino industry.
