The Cumberland Trail State Park is a linear park that cuts through 11
Tennessee counties. Plans are in place to have it extend 282 miles

voted the “Best Town Ever” by readers of Outside magazine in
2011 and again in 2015. Matador Network, the world’s largest
independent travel publisher, ranked Chattanooga among
the top 20 “Coolest Outdoor Towns” in America. National
Geographic Adventure named Chattanooga as one of the top
50 Next Great Adventure Towns in America for its miles of
mountain hiking, running, and biking trails. Bicycling magazine
named Chattanooga among America’s Top 50 Bike-Friendly
Cities. Wired2Fish.com, a freshwater fishing website, selected
Chickamauga Lake as one of the 2015 Top 20 largemouth
bass fisheries in the country.
With 50,000 acres of state parks, and hundreds of miles
of walking, hiking, and biking trails, Chattanooga offers an
abundance of space for outdoor activities. Hikers, cyclists,
and runners enjoy miles of greenways that run through and
around the Chattanooga area. Among the most popular is
the Tennessee Riverwalk, which stretches 13 miles along the

Tennessee River, connecting parks throughout
downtown Chattanooga. Near downtown
Chattanooga is the South Chickamauga
Creek Greenway. Currently in two separate
sections – 4.5 miles and 5.5 miles – plans are
in place to connect the full 14-mile greenway
with the Tennessee Riverwalk. Located one
mile east of Highway 153 in Hixson, outdoor
enthusiasts enjoy Greenway Farm at the
North Chickamauga Creek Greenway. The
220-acre conservancy features walking,
running, hiking, and biking trails. Located
in Collegedale, Wolftever Creek Greenway
is a paved walking and exercise trail that
stretches along Wolftever Creek connecting
parks, playgrounds, an amphitheater, and
more. A short drive from Collegedale and
just off I-75, Enterprise South Nature Park is
home to 2,800 wooded acres, which includes
miles of walking paths, bicycle paths, off-road
biking trails, and picnic areas.
State parks offer residents beautiful outdoor
areas. Among the most notable are the Booker
T. Washington State Park, a 353-acre space
located on scenic Chickamauga Lake, and
Harrison Bay State Park, a 1,200-acre park that
also borders the Chickamauga Lake shoreline.
Located near Apison is Red Clay State Historic
Park. The 263-acre park is popular for its beautiful narrow valleys, streams, and mountains.
On the western edge of Lookout Mountain is
Cloudland Canyon State Park, a 3,500-acre
park with miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Just a short drive from Chattanooga
is the nearly 25,000-acre Prentice Cooper State
Forest. Situated on the awe-inspiring Tennessee River Gorge, the forest has 35 miles
of hiking trails, camping areas, rock climbing,
mountain biking, horseback riding, and more.
Crossing four Tennessee counties – Grundy,
Franklin, Marion, and Sequatchie – is South
Cumberland State Park, which has 23,386 acres
of the best hiking and backcountry camping in
the region. North of Chattanooga is Fall Creek
Falls State Park, Tennessee’s largest and most
visited state park. With more than 26,000 acres
sprawled across the eastern top of the Cumberland Plateau, the park features 34 miles of trails,
cabins, campsites, an Olympic-sized pool, and
more.
Just as beautiful are miles of hiking and
biking trails that wind above and around the
Chattanooga area. Just minutes from North
Chattanooga is Stringers Ridge, a 92-acre urban
wilderness park with hiking, running, and biking
trails that overlook the Tennessee River and

Mountain is home to spectacular hiking and
biking mountain trails. Among the most
notable are the Bluff Trail, Cravens House

and Lula Lake. Resting on Waldens’ Ridge and
the southern end of the Cumberland Plateau,
Signal Mountain is home to the Cumberland
Trail, which starts at Signal Mountain’s Signal
Point and extends for miles to Prentice Cooper
State Forest, Rainbow Falls, Edwards Point,
and other Tennessee River Gorge trails. Just
minutes west from Soddy-Daisy and part of
the Cumberland Trail is North Chickamauga
Creek Gorge State Natural Area, which offers
hiking, camping, sport climbing, and worldclass bouldering. On the fringe of Soddy-Daisy
is Big Soddy Creek Gulf Area and 285 acres
of hiking trails, exceptional views, waterfalls,

In addition to the thrill of hiking or biking
through greenways and beautiful wilderness
trails, the Chattanooga area boasts other
world-class outdoor adventures. Risk-takers
enjoy hang gliding at Lookout Mountain Flight
Park, the largest full-time hang gliding school
and resort in the United States. Adventurers
can also go rock climbing and bouldering at
Foster Falls, Leda, Stone Fort, Sunset Rock,
and the Tennessee Wall. Cavers are also in
luck—just 10 minutes from downtown, Raccoon
Mountain offers one of the 10 most popular
cave systems in the country.
With the Tennessee River in the middle of
it all, and many creeks, lakes, and tributaries
nearby, water activities are at the top of the list
for outdoor enthusiasts. The Tennessee River
Blueway, a 50-mile section of the Tennessee
River that flows through Chattanooga and the
Tennessee River Gorge, is easily accessible by
boat launches located along the river. Fishing,
rowing, water skiing, and paddleboarding are
all popular pastimes for residents and visitors.
