Home to dozens of family-friendly attractions, activities, and events, Chattanooga is
perfect for a family getaway. In 2012, the New
York Times named Chattanooga to its Intergalactic Places to Visit list. Travel + Leisure
and Southern Living list Chattanooga among
their Best Civil War Sites and Easy Road Trips,
and have touted it as a charming and great
river town.
mals and 130 different species. The Tennessee
Riverpark features miles of walkable greenways, as well as boat ramps, fishing piers,
picnic facilities, art, and playgrounds. Tours
on a double-decker bus, horse carriage, or
boat offer great views and stories about the
city, and the nine-day Riverbend Festival,
Nightfall music series, and Riverfront Nights
provide live music outdoors.
The Tennessee Aquarium, one of the largest
freshwater aquariums in the world, features
a broad range of interactive, family-friendly exibits and the IMAX theatre. In 2013,
Family Fun magazine ranked the Tennessee
Aquarium 10th best among top museums,
aquariums, and zoos in the U.S.
For sports fans, Chattanooga is home to the
UTC Mocs athletic teams, the Chattanooga
Lookouts AA minor league baseball team, and
the semi-professional Chattanooga Football
Club. A number of golf courses and tennis
courts are open to the public.
The historic Chattanooga Choo Choo and
the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum are
also popular attractions. At the Creative Discovery Museum, hands-on exhibits encourage
creativity and learning.
Located on nearby Lookout Mountain,
Rock City features a 100-foot waterfall, panoramic views of seven states, and more than
400 species of plants. The Incline Railway,
one of the steepest passenger railways in the
world, is a scenic way to the peak of Lookout
Mountain. Ruby Falls is the largest and deepest underground waterfall open to the public
in the U.S. In 2012, it was named to Travel +
Leisure’s list of Beautiful Waterfalls Around
the World.
Did you know?
Chattanooga is the fourth largest tourism market in Tennessee,
having passed Knoxville in 2011.
Seasonal events in Chattanooga include
4th of July Fireworks, Oktoberfest, Ruby
Red Christmas, and the Enchanted Garden
of Lights.
Each year, Chattanooga continues to add
new attractions and improve existing ones.
SOAKya Water Park at Lake Winnepesaukah
opened in May 2013, and The Block, offering indoor retail, public art, and High Point
Climbing and Fitness, opened downtown in
late 2013.
A mild climate year round allows outdoor
attractions to thrive. Lake Winnepesaukah
features over 40 rides, food, and games. The
Chattanooga Zoo houses more than 300 ani-
