Huawei GSM-R Overview
Huawei began the GSM-R technology research and product development since 2002 and was quickly recognized by
the railway market as one of the most important GSM-R suppliers for railway telecommunication solutions.

GSM-R Introduction
GSM-R, Global System for Mobile Communication - Railway or GSM-Railway is an international wireless
standard for railway communication and applications. A sub-system of European Rail Traffic Management
System (ERTMS), it is used for communication between train and railway regulation control centers. The system
is based on GSM and EIRENE - MORANE specifications which guarantee performance at the speed up to 500
km/h (310 mph), without any communication loss.
Why GSM-R
During the course of their work in the period 1985 to 1989, the UIC radio frequency group concluded that
efforts would have to be undertaken to negotiate, with the European Frequency Committee (CEPT), for the
allocation of a certain spectrum of the GSM-band to the railways, due to the permanent increasing needs
to secure frequencies to underpin future railway needs. This request was supported by a pre-study on the
usability of either GSM or TETRA for the future railway mobile communications. Some studies were undertaken
to assess possible frequency needs (Studies to define a traffic model for three representative areas, London,
Paris and Munich, were carried out) and in parallel the advantages and disadvantages of the two potential
systems ( GSM or TETRA) were discussed.
Finally a decision was taken to adopt GSM, which was, at that time, the only system in commercial operation
with products available. This was a very important consideration as one of the main objectives was, to use
a system, which was already proven and where off-the-shelf products were available, with the minimum of
modifications. However, even at that time it was clear, that GSM could not fulfill all the requirements necessary
for an efficient railway service. Therefore it was necessary to identify and specify the above mentioned ASCI
features.
The request for frequencies resulted in a recommendation from CEPT, to provide a spectrum of 4 MHz out
of the GSM-band and to allocate this for railway use only. This recommendation was later modified into a
decision, which required the national frequency authorities to free this spectrum, which was already used (mainly
by military services), by 2005 at the latest.

Considering the important role of GSM-R as a transport layer for ETCS, Huawei GSM-R solution was developed
allowing our customers to select from a large number of reliability options. Huawei offer 3 level reliability strategies
on equipment level, network element level and system level.

Why Reliable
Safety is the most important factor in railway, so during construction of GSM-R network, what we most
concerned is the overall reliability of the network. It needs to ensure a single point failure not affect the
business of the whole network communication service. The reliability is really matters in railway than any other
industry, it is about the lives of tens of millions of people.
For this reason, in railway industry backup program is usually used to improve the reliability of the system.
Huawei launched the whole network elements hot backup solutions which from the core switching side to the
wireless side, each important network equipment has a hot backup mechanism.
This backup mechanism not only ensures the high reliability of each device, but make the improvement of the
whole GSM-R network from the system point of view.

For Equipment Level
1+1 hot backup mode is applied to key board components, and software error tolerance technologies is
applied, e.g. failure isolated, flow control, task monitor, store protection, data verification etc.
For Network Element Level
Huawei GSM-R network elements support different types of node-backup, for example, 1+1 HLR backup,
SGSN/GGSN pool, dual-homing MSC, duo-location BSC, BBU redundancy etc. In order to avoid any single point
of failure in case of major incidents such as natural disasters taking out complete rail telecoms control centers,
the GSM-R core network uses geography redundancy such as dual-homing, Mini-A-Flex, Duo-location and
SGSN/GGSN pool HLR 1+1 redundancy solutions to enhance the network reliability and availability.
For System Level
Huawei GSM-R solution provides co-site double coverage feature offers two independent wireless cells
coexistence within the same site location. Key advantage of this feature is that double coverage can be
promotion network reliability with a minimum of BTS sites.
Huawei GSM-R solution makes redundancy for the access network, core network and transmission, so single
point failure can be avoided.

Why IOT
The application for railway network needed different

With development of wireless technologies, GSM will reach its life-cycle in 2025, and the demand for wideband
service in railway is more and more important. Besides, railway equipments needs long term lifecycle at least for 15
years, which the current GSM-R cannot guarantee. Huawei GSM-R is the only one who is capable to make evolution
to LTE for Railway without hardware replacement.

Why Evolutional
With the development of wireless technology, GSM will disappear from the market till 2025. This is a unavoidable
fact that we need to face sooner or later. Some developed countries, like Japan, have already stopped to use
GSM in the public network and take its place by other technologies. Besides whether it can evolve to new
technology, is a key factor whether can we protest the investment for a long period.
GSM-R is the main stream in railway communication, which has been accepted as the standard and widely
commercially used all over the world. But with the rapid growth of global economics, capacity upgrade for
railway transportation is more and more important. In some regions, service like multi-locomotive traction has
been introduced, which means higher demand for the throughput of wireless communication. That is why LTE,
