DeGroot to Pass on Crown
Mr. NDA XVIII Kieran
DeGroot, now a freshman
soccer player at Carroll
University in Waukesha, will
return home to crown his
successor. “I am really excited to
come back, not only for the
show and the talent acts ,
but also just to be home and
get to see all the friends,”
DeGroot said.
Like most former winners,
DeGroot will perform
during the show. He hints,
however, that he will not
be doing magic acts like
he did last year to win the
crown. “My plans for this
year’s show. . . .it’s going to
History of Mr. NDA
By Tritonian Staff
Every year the Mr. NDA
contest seems to add a new
wrinkle, a new dimension
to the show. However,
from its inception in 1996
as a feature of the first Fall
Festival Week, the show has
remained true to its original
intent: entertainment for
the students.
“When Sr. Pat hired me
and told me I was Student
Government coordinator,
she said we were to have a
Fall Festival Week instead
of homecoming,” said Mrs.
Carolyn Brown. “‘Do anything you want to make the
students have a fun week
and forget about homecoming,’ she told me.”
That week included something “fun” every day with
Mr. NDA the final feature
of the week on Saturday
night.
“Kids today are astounded
when we tell them the first
contestants had talent acts
like lip syncing or eating
goldfish, and their entrance
was merely a strut on the
ramp in a tuxedo,” said Mrs.
Brown.
“A few years ago we
invited previous Mr. NDA
winners to come back
for a show, and they were
amazed at all the technology, creativity and talent
that’s now standard for the
show.”
Mrs. Andrea Gilson, English teacher, was a student
who saw the first Mr. NDA
and recalled the winner’s
“’Heal the World’ routine
that got the entire audience
involved.”
That first Mr. NDA was
Jeff Lutsy.
“The creativity, enthusiasm and energy made it one
of the high school events I
will always remember,” she
said, “but I have heard that
the current show will surpass my expectations, that
the acts are more intricate
and on a larger scale than
the first show.”
Substitute teacher Miranda Paul served as emcee
in 1999.
She believes the show is
so popular because of all
the student involvement,
“not just the individuals
who are contestants.” She
also sees it as “a chance for
the students to let loose and
be silly—something different from the everyday
academic role they usually
play during the school day.”
Another emcee was Miss
Holly Strong, who now
teaches American Experience. She recalls the 2006
winner, Steven Schumacher,
dancing with former students studying at St. Norbert College.
She has watched videos
of shows since then and
says “what has changed the
most has been the talent
and dedication of every
contestant. They really take
it seriously and want to be
the best.”
Miss Strong calls this
year’s field of fifteen a “most
dedicated and talented
bunch. It was so much fun
to be a part of, and I love
the tradition of the event,”
she said.
Mr. NDA is December 6
at 7 p.m. in the auditorium
followed by a reception in
the Commons. afterwards.

be big, but don’t get your
expectations up too high.”
The “magician” gives credit
for last year’s win to all those
who helped him out in the
show. “Chris, Sean, Eliza,
Bert, Liz, Gus, Emily, the
Weinkers—they are the ones
who really won the crowd
and won the crown,” he said.
His favorite part of the
Mr. NDA production
was “watching everything
come together for all the
contestants.” He regrets that not
everyone gets the full effect
of being part of the show.
“I wish the audience got
a chance to see how things
go on backstage. I think it
takes a very special group of
guys to be able to coordinate
all that they do for the show- being able to shake off
stress and anxiety and just
have a blast doing it.”
Is he living out his Mr.
NDA legacy? Kieran
laughed and said, “I have yet
to run around campus in a
green sweatshirt and tights
serenading girls, making
people disappear and then
reappear, or give any killer
thank-you speeches, but we
are only halfway through the
school year.”
Then in typical Kieran
fashion, he added, “But I
am trying to represent the
Academy the best I can. I
just have to keep reminding
myself, ‘Kieran, remember
who you are and where you
come from.’”

Pictured: Vince Hribernik (right) and Christian Zimonick (left).
Christian will be taking over Vince’s role as light and sound director next year.
How many hours would
you say you put into helping with Mr. NDA?
If you include the afterschool meetings, the set
up during the week of,
and editing videos for the
contestants, it is too many
to count.
What is your favorite part
about being involved in
Mr. NDA?
I think my favorite part
is definitely the rehearsals during the week of.
I really like seeing how
people’s talents/entrances
start off shaky and then
they end up amazing by
the end of the week. It’s
really cool seeing the
overall show evolve into
something amazing.
Is it different working
with your classmates now
as a senior?
I don’t think it is. I
worked with Greg Young
and Sam Liegel last year.
I think working with
the juniors seems a little
different. I don’t know a
whole lot of them!
Is there anything special
planned for this year’s
show?
I don’t want to give
everything away, but we
have a few surprises. The
intro for this year is pretty
awesome, could be better
than last year’s. Also, we
might have a few surprise
guests, but I can’t say a
whole lot!
What is your pet peeve
about working with the
guys?
Most of the guys are
fine, and I get along with
them real well. Sometimes when they hand me
things such as videos or
beachwear pictures last
minute, that gets on my
nerves. But for the most
part, they’re all good
guys.

2014 Mr. NDA Emcees
script writing together
will be a fun and interesting way to get to
know each other.
Q. What would be
YOUR definition of a
successful Mr. NDA
competition?
Q. What prompted you to
try out for the emcee role?
Olivia: Since freshman
year, I’ve wanted in on the
emceeing action. I had a
few people approach me
and ask if I was going to
try out to be an emcee. I
thought, “Geez. . . it’s that
time of year again? You
better believe I’ll try out.”
Senior year only comes
once in a lifetime!
Grace: I was prompted to
try out for the role of emcee
because I know how much
Anna (her sister) loved it
last year, and she is such a
role model for me. Plus,
I look rockin’ in a black
dress!
Q. What do you think is
your primary challenge as
far as the role?
Olivia: I think the hardest thing is going to be the
recovery. The day after the
big night is going to be very
bittersweet as emceeing for
Mr. NDA was a role I have
aspired to since freshman
year. It’s another step to the
end of life as a high school
senior. I will have to soak
up every minute of it while
it is happening!
Grace: I think the biggest
challenge will be writing a
script. Out of all the girls
who tried out for the role
of emcee, Olivia is the one I
probably know the least, so
Olivia: If the contestants
can relate to the audience in
a way that reflects who they
are, whether it is musically
or magically or just flat-out
hilariously. That’s what
makes a show—uniqueness
is a necessity. The contestants were picked by their
peers for a reason; the types
of people they are make
them entertaining. They
can wear their tuxes, but
what’s the point if they put
on a mask?
Grace: My definition of a
successful Mr. NDA involves good sportsmanship,
lots of laughing, and seeing
proof that the guys worked
hard and had fun.
Robinson.”
Akasha Berg, Junior: “When
Cayman Berg was at KFC during his
Fat Albert scene.”
Morgan McKeefry, Junior: “When
my cousin, Austin Watzka, did the
evolution to dance because I never saw
it coming.”
Robert Petitjean, Junior: “When
Ryan O’Connell forgot his lines and
made a fool of himself, but I still love
him.”

Schmidt’s ‘Okay Go’ dance his junior
year.”

impersonation of the Dance Team.”
Olivia Moran, Junior: “SNL
cheerleaders.”
Faith Hicks, Junior: “Seeing Mason
Appleton and Brett Gruber do the
figure-skating routine from Blades of
Glory in roller blades and in spandex.”
Ella Hunt, Sophomore: “Being stuck
in the middle of the Robinson family
drama as Kevin’s escort freshman
year.”

to be an escort freshman year (shoutout to John Strutt).”

Luke Davison did the Bohemian
Rhapsody scene from Wayne’s World
last year.”

sync) wearing a dress in Mr. NDA
2013.”
