area of Special Scientific Interest.
Why? Well the answer lies in
the soil. If you take a few steps
along the footpath that runs
behind the workshop, you’ll
notice a sandy outcrop over to
Falling as it does on the
‘central’ weekend of the
country’s Golden Jubilee
celebrations, the 5th Port of
Felixstowe Regatta promises
to be better than ever.

John is now in his 19th year
at Suffolk Yacht Harbour and is, for
sure, one of its greatest assets.
Apart from being a superb
craftsman (pictured above putting
the finishing touches to a fabulous
new teak deck on the Swan 44
Avista) he has the unflappable
temperament which ensures the
relentless smooth running of the
yacht harbour, year after year.
He’s had his own boat continuously from the age of ten and
built this Yachting

The enlargement of the West Harbour, starting in July, will cost
us precious hardstanding space - but we have a neat solution.

Nowadays, John can be found
cruising the East Coast with his
wife on their Seamaster 29
Juniper.
The redevelopment of the
West Harbour is still set to
begin this summer and, when
complete, will provide fifty
new big-boat berths.
The downside of this much
needed expansion will be the
loss of hardstanding space.
And after studying the ‘sardine
can’ appearance in the aerial
photo, there does not appear to
be an obvious solution.
But we’ve found one.
If you wander around the
site, there are many examples
of smaller boats arranged with
lots of space between them.
This is because the Travel Lift is
20’ wide and cannot put them
any closer together.
Now we are taking delivery
of a very clever Dutch Roodberg
boat mover that can adjust its
width to place boats in a row
with minimum waste of space.
This does not mean that you
won’t have room to work on
your topsides. We’ll still be
keeping a minimum separation
between boats. But the overall
layout will be more efficient.

We are streamlining the
‘processing’ of visiting craft by
re-locating Harbour Control

geologist) than it may at first
appear. It’s actually the southern
end of a seam which runs north
and next sees the light of day at
the Rocks on the River Deben.

last year is unlikely to have

the States specially - thanks

sailmakers had a busy and successful 2001
and all the indications are that this year
will be even more labour intensive.
Memorable Classics
Anyone involved in yachting
will look back on 2001 as a
classic year. The America’s Cup
Jubilee at Cowes must rank as
the most spectacular sailing
event since the heady days of
the 1930s, a time when sails
were made of cotton, flax and
silk. Sail technology has made
huge advances since then and
the Quantum Sail Design
Group is at the leading edge
of this revolution.

Other interesting projects this
past winter have included the
Southerly 105 Hoopla which has
had its Bukh DV36 completely
reconditioned, installation of new
stainless steel tanks and a bow
thruster for prettier parking around
the marina.

The Earls Court Boat Show
in January produced results far
in excess of the previous year
with a good number of yachts
sold by us.
Jeanneau were our market
leaders – they offer tremendous value for money with the
package of equipment that is
included in the standard price.
We believe that Jeanneau
build their yachts to a very
different quality to many of
their competition – they do not
rely on internal mouldings to
form part of the structure of
the boat - which enables them to
produce a more traditionally
wooden interior which is very stiff
and easy to repair.
The X-Yachts dealership is new
to us and we are pleased to say
that we have sold a number of
X-332s to the East Coast from the
show. We have taken delivery of
our new IMX-40 and look forward
to seeing you behind us on the
race course! The X-99 National
Championships with be held at
Levington later in the year and we
look forward to meeting lots of
converts!
Moody are steadily going up in
their product range with the launch
of the new 64 scheduled for the
summer. Currently the range
comprises the 38, 42, 47, 54 & 64.

To illustrate the extreme
importance of regular
expert spar and rigging
checks, just look at this

rivets needing attention.

intense growth for Rig Magic and the start
of a third season with more personnel, more
resources - and the biggest order book yet.

1977-2002
R & J Celebrate Silver Jubilee
The year 2002 is a big
landmark for celebrations.
Fifty years ago, Her
Majesty The Queen
ascended the throne and
celebrates her Golden
Jubilee this year. However,
what many people may not
know is that 25 years ago, R & J
Marine Electronics started trading and
this year we celebrate our Silver Jubilee!
To mark the occasion R & J are holding a weekend of special
celebrations on the18th and 19th May based at our newest
office and electronics showroom situated in the heart of Ipswich
at Ipswich Haven Marina. If you haven’t visited us there before,
this will be a golden opportunity to see a wide range of electronic
equipment on display. And if you have become one of the many
regular visitors to our new showroom, there will be even more
reason to visit as we will have even more on display!
The weekend will be supported by many of the top marine
electronics manufacturers such as Raymarine, Simrad, Icom etc
who will be on hand to show their latest equipment and technology
and available to talk to you about any specific problems or
queries that you may have. There will be competitions, prizes and
also some mini seminars covering various topics on electronics,
navigation and electrics. This event, being part of the Ipswich
Haven Marina open weekend will give the visitor to the marina
plenty to see and do. Please come along and bring your friends –
it promises to be an excellent weekend!
The R & J story
In 1977 Roy, Ron, John and John – hence the R&J – won the
local agency contract for Kelvin Hughes, a well known maker of
ship-born radar and communication equipment. Setting up their
office and workshops at Dovercourt in Essex, using a combination
of knowledge and experience of naval electronics systems.

A 13” colour liquid crystal screen television and a 15” colour
liquid crystal monitor give clear, bright and high definition picture
images. The wafer thin profile of each unit makes them ideal for
an installation where space is tight – they can even be mounted
on a bulkhead, so there will be no need to be bored next time
you are weather bound. Just tune in to your favourite programme.
Also on display is a Nakamichi sound system which certainly
puts other CD/radios in the shade. Come in and have a look for
yourselves.

C-Map chart cartridges
Those of you with electronic chart plotters that take C-map
NT cartridges may like to know that we have the facility at R&J to
produce new cartridges or update your existing ones.
The programming facility that we have enables the usual
C-map NT style of cartridges - although the previous style, CF85
format can still be ordered from C-map for you. Further more,
the C-map cartridges to suit Furuno products can also be
programmed on site. Generally programming new or updating
existing cartridges can be carried out while you wait.

Instructors’ Dunking
On a particularly unpleasant
day in March, we took 18 of
our instructors out to sea in a
Force 7 on ‘unspecified’ preseason training. Off Walton
we dumped them into three
liferafts and headed home having arranged collection for
them much later by Coastguard
Sea-King helicopter. Great fun!
The East Anglian Sailing Trust is organising
special ‘Taster Events’ at Suffolk Yacht Harbour to
attract more adults onto the water this Spring.

EAST has its own fleet of five National Squib dayboats. The first,
Easternairs, was launched in 1996 by Suffolk-based writer, broadcaster and
yachtswoman Libby Purves.
Successful fund-raising has enabled EAST to continue adding to the
fleet and the fifth, Royal Spirit, was launched by the Princess Royal who
visited EAST at Suffolk Yacht Harbour last year to open its purpose
equipped training room.
We are actively looking for new disabled members and their carers who
would like to get involved in sailing. So EAST is holding a “taster day” on
Saturday, May 11, when interested people will be able to have a half-hour
trial sailing session on the River Orwell. Pre-booking is essential and people
should call Ian Bliss at Rethink Disability on 01449 770154.
The established EAST cruising for blind and visually impaired sailors has
run from Levington since 1993. Audio compasses are used to enable visually
impaired helmsmen to steer the required course.
This year EAST are also running two taster cruising weekends for blind
and visually impaired sailors. The first is on June 7-9 with the annual VI

experienced sailors with disabilities from July 26 to August 3. Subject to
conditions, this cruise will aim to cross the North Sea to Holland.
