Belgium. November 2008 2. Spain. March 2009 3. Germany. June 2009 4. UK. March 2010 5. Belgium . May 2010 • To give pupils the opportunity to gain awareness and understanding of one another, e.g. language skills, computer skills, social skills: group work, and knowledge of education systems, food, history, socio-economic situation, currency, current energy, alternative resources: tidal, wave, wind, solar, hydro-electric, recycled products (combustion), geo-thermal – advantages + disadvantages) • Application of alternative energy in developing a green classroom: interactive communication, heating, cooling, lighting Visit to a passive house in Eke Place: Nazareth, Eke Street: Aan de Biesten Price: €283.265 Extra cost € 50.000 Type: Semi detached New building: Yes A passive house is a building in which a comfortable interior climate can be maintained without active heating and cooling systems. The house heats and cools itself, hence "passive". For European passive construction an annual heating requirement is less than 15 kWh/(m²a), not to be attained at the cost of an increase in use of energy for other purposes (e.g., electricity). Furthermore, the combined primary energy consumption of living area of a European passive house may not exceed 120 kWh/(m²a) for heat, hot water and household electricity. With this as a starting point, additional energy requirements may be completely covered using renewable energy sources. This means that the combined energy consumption of a passive house is less than the average new European home requires for household electricity and hot water alone. The combined end energy consumed by a passive house is therefore less than a quarter of the energy consumed by the average new construction that complies with applicable national energy regulations. Our project: Scale model house 1.6 billion people have no access to electricity. All of the electricity consumed worldwide multiplied by 10.000 equals the energy the sun provides. So ... the choice is easily made. Sub-Sahara Africa 32% South Asia 50% 35% in India alone East Asia (not including China) 14% 2008 – 2009 : Introduction and Theory • All pupils in all partner schools complete questionnaires on their personal understanding of types of energy production • Pupils plan and make a presentation (video) about their country, school and class for November Project Meeting (Belgium) • Pupils visit energy producer(s) in own locality • Pupils conduct, analyse and prepare results of a survey on school students’ knowledge of types of energy production for dissemination at January Project Meetings (Different Countries for different partners) • Use of e-twinning to introduce themselves and share ideas and knowledge – development of individual language skills • National Situation re degrees of pollution and alternative energies – reasons to consider alternative energy. Examination and then dissemination of results from partner countries • Exchanging, finding & presenting results to own schools and discussion in the classroom 2009 – 2010 : Activities • Project Meeting England (November 2008) • Pupils Research and Produce Real Examples of Production and Use of Alternative Energy: • Solar, Wind Projects to provide energy for heating, cooling, lighting, and interactive communication uses for a green classroom • Repeat of Questionnaire to Measure Effectiveness of Project • Final Project Meeting by Video-Conference – reinforcement of improved language skills • Produce Brochure and Video on the whole project What pupils have learn: Do you know how you can make airconditioning more environmentally friendly? Do you know what biodegradable means? Do you know what materials can biodegrade? Do you know how long coal takes to be formed? Do you know how much is used every year approximately? If something is durable, do you know what it means? If yes, do you know what durability means? Do you know what renewable energy is? Do you understand what causes Global Warming? If yes, do you know how to redress it? Have you heard of a ‘Ground source heat pump’? If yes, do you know what it does? Do you know what a hydro-electric power station is? If yes do you know how it produces electricity? Do you know what insulation is? Do you know what nuclear power is? If yes do you know how it produces electricity? Do you know where oil comes from? If yes, do you think it is a fossil fuel? Do you recycle? Do you know what a solar thermal panel is? If yes, do you know how it works? Do you know what a wind farm is? If yes, do you know where one is?
