Explanation of the tiebreaker arrangements (Criteria C and D) – see also the Parents’ Guide to Secondary School
Admissions
The first map (below) shows the location of all four schools within the shared designated area.
A boy or girl living within this area has designated area priority for three schools - a single sex school and the two co-educational
schools.
If there are more applications from within the designated area than places available, radial distance will be used as a tiebreaker for
The Emmbrook and St Crispin’s Schools. For The Holt and The Forest Schools, the tiebreaker will be the radial distance to BOTH
of the schools (i.e. the two distances added together, as explained in the Admissions Guide (The Forest School - page 23 and The
Holt School – page 67).
The second map shows (approximately) the relative priority across the area which would apply using this tiebreaker. Note that the
coloured banding on the map is given purely to illustrate the general effect of this tiebreaker. When processing applications, the
actual distances between the individual applicant’s address and the two schools will be used.
The map shows that families living in the designated area closest to either school or between the two schools will have highest
priority – for example, the Woosehill and Winnersh areas previously served by the schools, and also the area of Wokingham Town
immediately around and to the north and north-west of The Holt School.
In the case of The Holt, the school is usually heavily oversubscribed and it is possible that pupils living towards the extremities of its
former designated area (Hurst and Arborfield for example) may not have sufficient priority to gain places. As there tends to be a
lower demand for single sex education for boys, it is anticipated that Forest School will continue to be available to families across
the shared area. However, it is not possible to predict where the tiebreaker will take effect, as this will depend on factors such as
the total number of applications and patterns of parental preference between the different schools in a particular application year.
For non-designated area oversubscription criteria, the tiebreaker of simple radial distance will apply to all four schools.
