CT BAKER GROUP, CHARITY PRESENTATION
On Friday 6th February, a cheque presentation was held at Bakers & Larners of Holt for the CT Baker Group’s chosen charities of 2014.
Managing Director Mr Michael Baker was delighted to present cheques to representatives of The East Anglian Air Ambulance, The Holt Youth
Project and The Norfolk Hospice,
Tapping House.
Budgens of Holt raised a total of
£7423.70 for the East Anglian
Air Ambulance, a fantastic effort
from all of the staff who organised
raffles, tombolas and cake sales
throughout the year. The chosen
charity for Bakers and Larners was
the Norfolk Hospice, who received
a cheque for £1902.91 raised
through raffles, donations from
sales and fundraising events. In
addition, the sum of £1891.20 was
raised through the sponsorship and
sale of the Tapping House Holt
Christmas card, collection boxes
in store and Mr Baker’s ‘arrest’ for
crimes against fashion in March
2014!
A cheque was also presented to the
Holt Youth Project for £1735.76 in
respect of monies raised through
carrier bag sales in Bakers and
Larners Food Hall and Budgens
of Holt.
The charities selected for 2015
have been named as RNLI, Holt
Branch for Bakers and Larners,
and Dogs for the Disabled for Budgens of Holt. Carrier bag sales this year will be donated to the North Norfolk branch of the MS Society. The
CT Baker Group would like to thank all employees for a fantastic effort throughout the year and above all want to recognise the dedication and
vital work of these three local charities.

BRISTON DAY CENTRE NEWS
Despite the cold weather this last month we have still enjoyed our
trips out for some ʻretail therapyʼ. We drove down to Sheringham and
went to the Craft Shop and bought lots of wool and other useful bits
and pieces, followed by a drive along the coast. On another day
we went to the Factory Shop at Fakenham and then last week we
enjoyed a visit to Fakenham Garden Centre.
We have been entertained by Mick Leary on his Yamaha keyboard
and some of our clients even got up and danced! Derek and Margaret
Cattermull showed us a film about their holiday in Scotland and
Heather had us bouncing in our seats with her exercises, which are
always a source of great amusement, as well as helping us to keep fit!

In an effort to encourage the use of nuclear energy, the United

Homing pigeons use roads where possible to help find their way
home. In fact, some pigeons followed roads so closely that they
actually flew around traffic circles before choosing the exit that led

North Norfolk District Council has sent letters to 55,000
households across the district to encourage voters to check
the electoral registration information held for them is correct ahead of
the May elections.
The letter lists every member of the household registered to vote.
If all of the information is correct, no action is required.
The Council is urging those not included and who are eligible to vote
to register now.
Registering to vote can now be completed online at www.gov.uk/
register-to-vote Eligible voters are strongly reminded that to vote
in the forthcoming District, Parish and UK Parliamentary General
Election on 7th May, they must be registered by Monday 20th April.
Paper applications can be issued on request.
Equally, if information list on the letter is incorrect, residents are
urged to visit www.registerbyinternet.co.uk/northnorfolk or call
Electoral Services on 01263 516046 or 516317 so that the Register
can be updated.

AID AFRICA UPDATE
from Lynda Mills
Thank you all for the wonderful response to our
appeal for help following the violent storms that
devastated Malawi last month. The death toll is still rising and it’s
estimated that one million people have been affected nationally by the
disaster.
By the time you read this, we’ll be back in
Africa, carefully assessing the damage in
our local area. It’s been reported that 439
families have been displaced, that’s about
1500 whose homes have been destroyed
and are left with nothing. Helping to rehome will be a huge logistical and financial
exercise, but we’ll do all we can with the
resources you’ve kindly donated. Hunger
is still the most pressing need so last month
Aid Africa managed to give out 7½ tonnes
of maize (30,000 meals), 7500 dried soya
meals, plastic sheeting for shelter and soap.
Another maize distribution followed this
month, supplying a further 20,000 meals,
plus soya and soap - but this is just the
beginning!
So, if you missed the opportunity to give,
don’t worry, any donations that go into
the ‘Disaster Bucket’ in the Shop, or are
marked ‘Disaster’ will be forwarded on to
us in Malawi . Every penny donated for this
purpose will be spent to help those whose
lives have been so devastated.

SHERINGHAM WOODFIELDS
SCHOOL ARE GO!
Sheringham Woodfields School, a complex needs school educating
99 pupils, have finally reach its fundraising target of £40,000 to allow
work to start on a brand new Sensory Room.
The final donation, £500, came courtesy of the Shipden Lodge of
Royal Ark Mariners (No 717) and was presented to the school by
Chris Wright (photograph below); Worshipful Commander. During
the weekly
whole school
assembly on 6th
February, Chris
explained to
pupils and staff
about the work
carried out by
the lodge in and
around the local
community.
This was
followed by
Chris presenting
the cheque to
the school.
Work on the new Sensory Room is due to start during half term, with
the new room ready by the middle of March 2015.
Once complete, the new Sensory Room will allow for both individual
and group work to be undertaken using state of the art equipment.
Sensory Rooms help develop children’s senses using specialist
lighting, music and objects whilst at the same time allow therapy to
be given to those children with limited communication, sight and
mobility.
All pupils and staff wish to thank the Shipden Lodge of Royal Ark
Mariners for their kind donation.

Occasionally, airline attendants make an effort to make the inflight safety lecture and their other announcements a bit more
entertaining. Here are some real examples:

As the plane landed and was coming to a stop at Washington National,
a lone voice came over the loudspeaker: “Whoa, big fellas. WHOA!”
After a particularly rough landing during thunderstorms in Memphis,

when opening the overhead compartments because, after a landing
like that, sure as hell everything has shifted.”

HOLT - MY KIND OF TOWN
2 Main Courses for only £12
As part of The Holt Society’s 50th anniversary celebrations, there will
be two creative writing projects in the community, one involving the
primary school, exploring ‘Holt 1965, 2015 and 2065’, and the other
an attempt to create what we might loosely call a ‘Community Poem’.
This will be displayed in the library and will reflect what Holt means
to the people who visit, work and live in our town.
Obviously, a poem is made up of words, and this is where the Holt
community comes in - to supply the words and feelings which convey
what makes Holt special.
On Thursday 12th March at Budgen’s and Friday 13th March in the
library, there will be a table, a supply of paper and pens and volunteers
to chat to, if you’d rather talk than write, who will note down what
you say.
We’ll be asking you to complete the sentence, “I love Holt because...”
in any way you wish. Just a few words will be enough - and you can
be anonymous! Forget for a while the frustrations of car parking and
the concerns about developments, think about all the positives, helpful
shops, friendly people, welcoming churches, the wonderful winter
lights, Spout Hills, the owls ....
Maybe you’ve lived here most of your life or maybe you have chosen
to live in Holt on retirement, you could think of what brought you
here and what the place means to you. And if you live in one of the
surrounding villages, you can say why you like to visit Holt and what
you like most about coming here.
Everyone is welcome to make a contribution
and we hope the end result will show why
Holt is ‘our kind of town’.

Our February meeting started with the A.G.M.
followed by a demonstration by Heather Shaw from
Boston. Heather took us ‘Around The World In 90
Minutes’ and gave us some beautifully colourful
arrangements with gorgeous exotic flowers, feathers and woolly
sticks. The Club competition prizes were presented and everyone who
had entered throughout the year received a lovely plant.
The next Club Meeting will be on Monday 16th March 7.00pm for
7.30pm and the members competition will be ‘Spring Miscellany. This
compliments the demonstrator’s title ‘Spring Fantasy’, brought to us
by Vicki Hease from Stowmarket’. Annual subscriptions (still only
£22.00) will be due. Or come along as a visitor for just £5.00.
Our thoughts at the moment are geared towards the Flower Festival
planned for St. Andrew’s Church from the 1st to the 4th of May this
year. We are writing to all the businesses in Holt asking for sponsors
and very much hope some generous souls will come forward to help
with the cost of the flowers. The Junior Church will be involved and
we also plan a competition for the children. Any profits from the
Festival will be shared between the Church Fabric Fund and Holt &
District Dementia Support Group.

NORFOLK DEAF ASSOCIATION APPEALS
FOR BEFRIENDING AND HEARING
SUPPORT SERVICE VOLUNTEERS
Osteopathy in Holt
Mr John Davis BSc Hons
Norfolk Deaf Association (NDA) is appealing for volunteers for its
Befriending and Hearing Support Services, particularly in North
Norfolk.
NDA’s Hearing Support Service offers home visits, as well as a
mobile clinic, which visits 28 towns and villages throughout Norfolk.
There are also nearly 100 community clinics most of which are for
residents at nursing homes and sheltered schemes, but some are open
to the general public. Volunteers are the life-blood of the service,
looking after more than 6,000 service users a year.
The Befriending Service offers support and friendship to members
of the community who experience any degree of hearing loss, as
well as being by affected by, for example, loneliness, isolation and
disability. Whatever the reason, NDA’s aim is to help the befriendee
overcome their problems by offering the special support of a volunteer
befriender.
Pam Spicer, Co-ordinator of the Hearing Support Service explained:
“We are very busy with lots of referrals and demand for new
community clinics. We would like to add to our very dedicated
group of volunteers. For both services we offer three days extensive
initial training and then ongoing training and support. We also have
social gatherings where volunteers can get to know each other. Both
volunteers and the people they are helping find their involvement with
NDA very rewarding.”

ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH
CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE
On Sunday 15th February, as near to St. Valentine’s Day as possible,
St. Andrew’s Church, Holt, held a service of celebration of marriage.
In a Church decorated with wedding dresses, flowers and frills,
couples gave thanks for the sacrament of marriage, the joy of a fruitful
and blessed union between man and woman.

Widows, widowers and single people were also able to give thanks
for past relationships and happy memories. Candles were lit in
thanksgiving and as a sign of couples’ commitment to each other.
After the service wedding cake and bubbly were served in the Meeting
Room and there was an opportunity to study the wedding dresses and
to look at all the photographs and albums and try to guess who was
who! Everyone looked so young! The cake was cut by Victor and Rita
Stephenson, a couple who were celebrating 65 years of married life.
Thanks are due to all those who lent their precious and beautiful
wedding dresses and to all the shops who so kindly lent mannequins
on which to display the dresses.
It was a joyful, inspiring and memorable occasion.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust is opening a brand new
education facility at Cley Marshes: the Simon
Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre. Our vision for
the centre is to help visitors explore, discover and be inspired by
fantastic wildlife and wild places along the North Norfolk coast.
Visitors can enjoy new interactive interpretation and a striking
observation deck, with breath-taking views of the marshes.
The centre provides a welcoming multifunctional space for schools,
universities, community groups and general visitors. We have an
extensive programme of events including walks, family events, adult
learning workshops, exhibitions, talks and performances. With a
diverse range of events, we cater for all ages and abilities and cover
areas such as wildlife, the arts, conservation, photography, history and
landscape.
The centre is named in memory of local naturalist, Simon Aspinall
(1958- 2011), in recognition of his contribution to ornithology and
nature conservation.
This project, which included a land purchase and its conservation,
was made possible thanks to a Heritage Grant of £1.5million from
the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and more
than £900,000 donated by members of NWT, the public,
businesses and charitable trusts.

‘.... THERE IS NEVER
ANYWHERE TO PARK’
Dear Caroline,
As a resident of Holt since 1982, I can
honestly say it is truly heartbreaking to watch
the towns’ recent decline ... and all for the
want of a car park.
Customers who would frequent my shop on
a regular basis, at least once a week, don’t
bother coming into Holt once a month now
because, “there is never anywhere to park.”
Now, I don’t know what the Council has
against Holt but it clearly doesn’t like the
town.
There have been a number of very positive
ideas submitted by residents and traders alike
regarding the parking problems. Has the
Council done anything? No. Oh, yes, apart
from suggesting On Street Permit Parking!
What? Might as well close the town now and
put us all out of our misery.
Holt is special, a pretty Market Town, still
with its own identity - just.
How long will it be until it looks exactly
the same as every other market town up and
down the country with its ‘one way system’
and ‘shopping precinct’?
The Benefits of Mindfulness
Mindfulness can be defined as the intentional focusing of your
attention and awareness on the present moment. Although
Mindfulness as part of spiritual practices dates back 2500 years,
modern mindfulness is a mental skill, which can be taught and
developed.
Our minds normally tend to jump about from one thought to another,
from the past to the future, like a grasshopper - what is called
‘monkey mind’. The quality of our thoughts determines the quality of
our experience of life. When our mind is full of regrets, worries and
negative thoughts, this can lead to chronic anxiety and depression,
and often ill health. Practicing Mindfulness regularly develops more
calmness, clarity and acceptance. This leads to better physical and
mental health, and greater well being.
Physical benefits: relieve tension and stress, lower blood pressure,
reduce chronic pain, improve sleep, reduce digestive problems.
Mindfulness improves Mental health: anxiety and stress, panic
attacks, depression, addictions, eating disorders, relationship
problems.
Mindfulness increases overall Well Being: more calmness and
acceptance, greater contentment and satisfaction, more enjoyment
of the present moment, improved relationships, increased resilience
and self confidence.
A short Mindfulness exercise: Sit comfortably upright, and become
aware of your thoughts, your feelings and your physical sensations.
Simply accept yourself as you are at this moment, without judgement
or criticism. Bring your attention to your breath, the in and the out.
Observe the flow of the breath and the sensations. Let your breath
be an anchor into the present moment, so that the monkey mind
becomes quiet.
Any daily, routine activity, such as brushing your teeth or drinking
a cup of tea, is an opportunity for ‘mundane mindfulness’. Be fully
aware of what you’re doing and how you’re doing it, the thoughts,
feelings and sensations. For just 1 minute, be fully present.

Clinics at the hospital: The next Aortic Aneurysm Assessment
is being held on Tuesday 31st March. This is a simple scan which
can tell if you have an abdominal aortic aneurysm. NHS screening

Better Broadband for Norfolk (BBfN): Due to the £17.9
million deal recently signed by Norfolk County Council and
BT there will be a further major increase in the network of fibre cables
and roadside cabinets installed and planned since the original project
commenced two years ago. This will enable many more households
and businesses in Norfolk to access faster fibre broadband. I am
particularly delighted because we can now reach more of our rural
communities.
To achieve the desired outcome the Director of the BBfN programme
has to carry out a detailed analysis of BT’s proposed design. This is a
complex task to ensure maximum properties receive fibre so it will be
spring before detailed announcements can be made. In the meantime
Blakeney residents and businesses will be delighted that the Cley
cabinets Nos 1 and 2 are live because these also serve Blakeney. I
would advise residents and business to read my piece in the January
edition of the Chronicle and check on what to do next - you will not
be upgraded automatically.
In response to a few recent questions I can tell you that: BBfN is
providing fibre services through local street cabinets which are
connected back to major fibre exchanges, not via local telephone
exchanges.
None of the work being carried out installing BBfN fibre has an
adverse affect on current copper based services.
If you have any problems with your existing broadband you need to
raise the matter with your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
If you have been advised that properties in your area are due under the
existing programme for an upgrade to fibre please access the postcode
checker on www.betterbroadbandnorfolk.co.uk. This is our official
website and is regularly updated and you can access the postcode
checker.
Mobile ‘Phones: As Chair of the Broadband, Mobile ‘Phone &
Digital Working Group I was pleased to attend Vodafone’s reception
at Westminster celebrating the outcome of their competition and the
11 successful Norfolk parishes. Delighted as I am for our successful
communities what, as I keep repeating, we want are good signals
all across the county, so I was pleased to have the opportunity for a
brief conversation with the Minister of State Ed Vaizey to express
my concerns. I keep on emphasising that whilst not over populated,
Norfolk leads in science, agriculture and tourism and therefore
has an ever growing need for good mobile communications. I also
emphasised how poor signals across our rural areas and along our
coastline adversely and dangerously affect communication in times
of emergencies. Since then I have met again with the Minister when
he came to Norwich to announce the latest broadband rollout figures
across the country. I am delighted to say that Norfolk has surpassed
all other counties engaged in BDUK provision of fibre broadband.
Naturally I took the opportunity to further discuss Norfolk’s rural
needs.
Glass Recycling: Since NNDC’s system of recycling glass has
changed a number of parishes have expressed regret at the loss of
income. Whilst bottles can now be placed in the green recycling bins
some parishes have adopted another system similar to that previously
run by NNDC. The current recycling credit in this system is £52.06
per ton (Information displayed on Norfolk County Council website

LUNCH
Dear Friends,
“What have you given up for Lent?” is a question I am often
asked at this time of year. I would like to be able to say “gin” but
giving into temptation would have to be added to the list of sins
committed at my next confession!
Giving up things for Lent has long characterised this holy
season running up to Easter. But is giving up things to prove we
can be self -disciplined or in an attempt to lose weight what it is
really all about? Going without something for the sake of it is not
really what Lent is about. Rather, it should help us to overcome or
change something in our life that needs changing or else help
someone else. Many people give something up and then give away
the money they have saved to a good cause or else use the time they
have saved by spending it with someone else or helping someone
in need. Ideally, giving up something for Lent should lead to
something else and to a renewed dedication to God and to others.
Last year on each Friday during Lent we encouraged
people to share a simple lunch of bread, soup and water at the
parish church and to give a small financial offering to support the
diocesan lent appeal. People were asked to eat less and to give to a
good cause. This year we are doing the same.
Through the Norwich Diocese we are supporting the
suffering church in the Holy Land. Like the majority of Christians
in the Middle East, Christians in the Holy Land find themselves in
a minority. Many of them suffer from restricted ability to travel,
high levels of unemployment, low wages, poverty, lack of food,
limited access to water and the stress of an uncertain future. Any
support the wider church can give them will encourage them to stay
in the birth place of Christianity. This year’s appeal aims to support
the Anglican Diocese in Jerusalem which runs 34 institutions
including hospitals, medical centres and schools, to provide health
care to patients living in difficult circumstances. The appeal has
three specific aims;
1) To enable Christian patients with insufficient resources to
access the medical care services at the Diocesan Medical Centre for
the next 2 – 3 years.
2) To strengthen the presence of the Christians in the Holy
Land by offering them help and lessening the temptation to
emigrate.
3) To provide funds to the Diocese in Jerusalem to continue
offering the Centre to patients of all faiths
Lent provides us with the opportunity to pause and reflect
on what really matters in life. It helps us think about the needs of
others and how we might give and support those whose needs are
greater than our own. As the Bishop of Thetford, the Rt. Revd. Alan
Winton, says, “Lent is a time when we focus on renewing our
dedication to God. For this short period in the year, we try to
renew and deepen our commitment to prayer and studying our
faith. Sometimes we practice a form of self-denial as a way of
living more simply, and many use Lent as a time to give a little each
day in gratitude to God. All of these things we do in Lent, not to
fulfil our duty and get it over with, but to develop habits that will
stay with us throughout the year."

OPEN DAY AT THE OLD SCHOOL

150 years of names on the Old School toilet walls were discovered as
ex-pupils and locals attended the open day on Sunday 8th February to
celebrate the building’s conversion to 10 beautiful affordable homes
for local people and their families.
The old toilets are being made into storage sheds and the walls show
the names and initials of former pupils etched into the red brick. The
School was built on land
donated by Holkham
estate, in about 1836,
and the money raised
by local residents to
provide the first non
private school in Wells.
The open day was
attended by about 170
people, new tenants
mingling with many
former pupils, who came
to see what has become
of the Grade II listed
property which was

was a great day as they
reminisced about the teachers and events which they remembered
from their child hoods.
Former pupil Lorna Kirk said, “The apartments are really lovely:
spacious, light and airy and the building still looks as handsome as
ever!” Churches Together leader and Wells resident, David Saunders
said “Wells has punched above its weight again, a wonderful
opportunity for young people to stay in their home town”.
Lynn Watson, chair of Homes For Wells, said that everyone seemed
very pleased with the transformation and happy that the property is
now providing affordable housing for local key workers and their
families. Grants from North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society
Enabling Fund, the Homes and Communities Agency and lots of local
fundraising has wrought a wonderful transformation at this lovely old
building which will benefit Wells for the
next 150 years.

9th February and a new chapter in the life
of this lovely building began.

In our last issue we featured the photograph below of Holt’s prize
winning Fire Brigade.
Most of the faces had been recognised but a few were missing. We
have received several emails and telephone calls from our readers and
can now name them all, together with additional pieces of information
regarding the photograph.

We were also informed that Divisional Officer Gordon Dix lost his life
in service at the RAF Neatishead fire disaster in 1966.

Age UK North Norfolk in Sheringham is starting a new computer
support service for the over 55’s.
We are holding a launch event on Tuesday 10th March from 10.00am
to Noon at our offices at 1 Huntley Crescent in Sheringham. Everyone
is welcome to come along to see how we might be able to help with
their computing needs and aspirations.
Computers, whether they be PCs (personal computers), laptops or
tablets can be a great way to help keep in touch with family and loved
ones. Be it via email, Skype, Facebook or other social media outlets
you could possibly find new friends and rediscover acquaintances of
old.
Whatever you would like to learn, or if you would just like some
advice, every Tuesday and Thursday morning Age UK North Norfolk
will be offering support on any computer issues you may have.
We will aim to show you how to keep yourself safe online and get
the maximum benefit from your time online. The scheme is free to
consumers other than a small charge for any printing costs but any
donations to Age UK North Norfolk would always be gratefully
received.
We do have a small selection of devices to help demonstrate how to
use pcs/laptops etc. but you are welcome to bring your own devices to
the sessions for us to work on beside you.
This is a service run as part of the Age UK North Norfolk Befriending
scheme which is supported by the National Lottery and aims to reduce

THEN AND NOW
The Scene in the Sixties: A young woman, three months pregnant, died after her car hit a tree in dense fog. The
District Nurse living nearby heard the crash and called me to the scene. The patient was trapped with severe
facial and possible neck injuries, lapsing in and out of consciousness, choking on the vomit of her recent meal.
Having freed her, she had a twelve mile journey to the nearest accident unit. She died as the ambulance neared
the doors and could not be resuscitated. She succumbed to respiratory obstruction, due to food inhalation.
The uncommon thing about this accident was that a doctor was called. Ambulance staff said they often had
wanted a doctor to attend, but had no means of identifying the nearest one, or of contacting him. Radiocommunications were rare on ambulances.
There was no suction equipment in the ambulance, nor did GP’s carry it. Most doctors had sticky plasters,
lint, a bandage or two, injections and metal/glass syringes but no intravenous fluids or transfusion equipment,
airways, or splints. Ambulances were as ill-designed as they were ill-equipped, in some areas manned by only
a driver, with minimal training in first aid and none in CPR.
What might be done?
Many doctors recently trained in hospital techniques were now working in general
practice. Properly equipped, those doctors could prevent shock from blood loss by
setting up a drip before veins had become collapsed. Doctors could treat airway
obstruction or lung collapse which could be fatal
within a very few minutes; they could monitor head
injury and relieve pain - if only they could be got to
the scene in time.
The Norfolk Accident Rescue Service went operational on 1st October 1970, after only five months of planning and
organisation, with 71 General Practitioners participating, covering well over 80% of the County. Its Constitution
read ‘the Service is for the provision in the geographical county of Norfolk and areas contiguous thereto of
immediate medical treatment and care to persons in need by reason of accident or other emergency’.
FORTY-FOUR YEARS LATER the NARS Constitution still contains the same statement. But much else has changed. In the intervening years,
new medical specialists were emerging: doctors with enhanced skills in pre-hospital medicine and immediate care; Critical Care Paramedics paramedics who have undergone significant additional training to deal with the most serious, life-threatening injuries and illnesses. This new
breed of emergency practitioner was able to conduct advanced procedures at the scene, administer specialised pain relieving drugs and sedate
patients when required.
Road traffic collisions continue to occur, with 391 people ‘killed or seriously injured’ on Norfolk’s roads in 2013-14.
Cardiac arrest continues to be the ultimate medical emergency, highly time critical and still fatal for over 70% of victims.
Clearly, there was still a need for a team of highly trained, qualified and experienced emergency medical practitioners, who would be able to
quickly attend the most serious incidents, to support and augment the ambulance crews.
At the same time, the ambulance service recognised the need to be able to identify the most serious cases and dispatch the appropriate resources.
The solution was the Critical Care Desk (CCD). The CCD filters all incoming 999 calls and identify those which might benefit from specialist
skills. The CCD also accepts Crew Requests: a call from an ambulance crew who recognise that the patient(s) would benefit from the enhanced
skills, drugs and equipment that a NARS member would bring.
NARS doctors and Critical Care Paramedics are still dispatched from home, in their own cars, but today their cars are equipped with blue lights
and sirens, paid for by the charity. They have been trained to drive under emergency conditions, have advanced driving qualifications and have
additional ‘blue light’ insurance, again paid for from the charity’s funds. NARS doctors and paramedics still provide their services voluntarily.
But there was recognition that the somewhat random availability of NARS members could be an issue. Frequently, a call would come in which
needed a NARS member to attend, but the person might not be available. What was needed was a unit which would be ‘on call’ at the busiest
times: a vehicle manned by skilled personnel, carrying all the necessary equipment and drugs, ready to go at a moment’s notice.
The concept of a NARS Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) was proposed in early 2014 and a campaign was launched to pay for it. After a period
of intense fund-raising and the receipt of some
generous donations, the charity decided to purchase
a second-hand Audi Allroad - an estate car which is
fast, has four wheel drive and which can negotiate
limited off-road conditions.
The arrival of the RRV represents the beginning of
a new era for NARS. It will extend our capability
and allow our members to work planned shifts.
Because the crew will be at full readiness, response
times will be shortened and patients will be reached
quicker.
The RRV will also help to solve another significant
problem. At present, there is no framework within
the NHS to permit paramedics to acquire the
additional training required to progress towards
Critical Care Paramedic. The RRV will allow
experienced paramedics to be taken out on active
shifts, to acquire vital hands-on experience of
serious medical and trauma emergencies. NARS
currently has a waiting list of over fifty paramedics
who are willing to give up their spare time to gain
these skills.
The arrival of the RRV is not an end in itself: it is the beginning of a continuing process. NARS has identified over £50,000 worth of specialised
medical equipment which needs to be purchased to enable the provision of the highest levels of care to those most in need. Running costs need to
be met, so the charity is in constant need of funds to keep operational. But the goodwill of the people of Norfolk has kept us going for over forty
years and we hope that will continue into the future.

NORTH NORFOLK PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
North Norfolk Photographic Society held 2 major club competitions on 4th February and a particularly distinguished judge presided.
Vic Hainsworth first caught the Photographic bug whilst serving in the forces in Aden in 1965. After leaving the Services, he was
for over 20 years (until he retired) a professional wedding photographer, and has been a member of Colchester Photographic Society
for over 40 years. In February 2013, he was elected to the Executive of the East Anglian Federation of
Photographic Societies as Awards Officer of the Photographic Association of Great Britain, his role being
to promote distinctions around East Anglia.
‘Beatles Lyrics’ was the specified title for one of the contests, and ‘The Fool on the Hill’ kept company
with ‘Sgt Pepper’ in a ‘Yellow Submarine’, and so on. Many of the lyrics seemed unfamiliar - the Beatles
wrote so many!
First was Paul Stearman with ‘Love Me Do’, second Joyce Gilbert with ‘Yesterday’ and third Alan
Dedman with Sgt Pepper. Graham Fulcher’s ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ was Highly Commended.
And the ‘Open’ section - where entries could be on any subject. Over 40 entries were pitted against one
another, and 4 of them were awarded 10 out of
10 marks, and another 3 were given 9½. The
winner was Paul Richard with ‘Kingfisher - Pure
Elegance’ (right), second was Paul again with
’The Surging Tide’ and third Barb Gardner with
‘Anemone’ (left). Nick Akers ‘Silver Birch
Wood’ was Highly Commended.

MUSIC FROM THE NORTH!
On Friday 13th February, the capacity audience at the Copeman Centre in Briston were yet again superbly entertained by one of the UK’s top
organists, Brett Wales. Using his Wersi Louvre digital organ (you could buy two good cars for less than the price of this one!), he delighted us
all with a very varied and song-packed two hour performance, including Nancy Sinatra’s ‘These Boots Were Made For Walking’, the Strauss
favourite ‘Roses From The South’, which sounded just like a huge concert orchestra, the Shadow’s ‘Apache’, a very bouncy Rock and Roll
medley, and Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. The evening concluded with a very fast ‘Hillbilly’ medley which had everyone’s toes tapping
furiously, and was followed by the loudest round of applause you could possibly imagine!
The next show will be on Friday 27th March when Mark Thompson (photograph right) will travel the 232 miles
from his home near Durham to play for us. He is a great favourite with our audiences, and again he plays all sorts
of music, so there is definitely something for everyone! Not only is he a great musician, but he has a lovely gentle
Northern humour too. If you like the greatest live music, played on the best digital instruments, you must get your
tickets booked soon. They are just £6.00 each if booked in advance - and the best news is that under 16’s get in
ABSOLUTELY FREE as long as they are accompanied by a ticket-paying adult, and we are pleased to say that
we do now seem to be getting more younger music lovers coming along and enjoying our kind of music. The

EAGLE OWL IN HOLT
Early morning worshippers at St Andrew’s Church on 8th February
were surprised and intrigued to see an Eagle Owl perched on buildings
at the bottom of the church drive and later on Old School House.
June Hulbert had heard a commotion from rooks in the area on the
previous evening so it had probably arrived then.

Tony Hurling commented that the owl had returned to Holt, reference
to the tale that the town’s association with this bird began when a lessthan-bright lad placed an owl in the village pound and was surprised
when, by next day, it had flown off.
That was much more likely to have been a Tawny Owl, a species
which can still frequently be heard around the town at night. Eagle
Owls are not a British species and this one must have escaped from
captivity. Does anyone know from where?

ROCK BODHAM CHEQUE PRESENTATION
A special presentation evening was held at Bodham Red Hart on Saturday 7th February to present the proceeds of the 2014 Rock Bodham
charity music festival. The evening was opened by Chairman John-Paul Ringer, who welcomed guests and thanked all the volunteers, sponsors,
and bands who played free of charge, for their part in making last year’s event such a success.
Charities to benefit from the £3,450 to be given away included the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Norfolk branch of the Cyctic Fibrosis
Trust in memory of Gary Higgs, Gary’s brother Jim is a regular performer at Rock Bodham.
Christine Berwick, collecting the donation on behalf of the trust, thanked the committee,
saying “This money will go towards making the experiences and lives better for some brave
young Norfolk people.”
Also receiving donations were Bodham Playing Field, Church and Village Hall. Mike
Sayer, collecting his cheque on behalf of the Playing Field, showed his appreciation for the
committee’s efforts, commenting “It costs £1,600 per year just to afford the insurance to
keep the playing field open.”
Rock Bodham organisers also asked their two main sponsors for 2014, Sanders Coaches and
East Coast Marquees, to each nominate a charity they wish to receive £250. Sanders Coaches
nominated Sheringham Sports Association, who will use the money towards improving
disabled facilities, whilst East Coast Marquees nominated North Norfolk Radio’s Kids Trust
charity.

SINGING FOR TAPPING HOUSE

The response from singers all over the county and beyond to
Fakenham Choral Society’s Come & Sing Day on 28th February
has been wonderful. Over 200 people have booked to enjoy a day of
singing workshops and to put on an early evening performance of the
Faure Requiem all in aid of the new Tapping House Hospice building
in Hillington, near King’s Lynn.
Come and sing days are always popular and good fun and the
Fakenham Choral Society committee decided to combine this fun
element with helping a good local cause. The idea was not only to
encourage regular singers to come but also those who have sung in the
past and those who only sing a little, to come along and have a go and
to get back to or start singing regularly.
To get such an amazing response from singers shows the support that
Tapping House has around the area and now all this ‘Come & Sing’
choir needs is an equally large supportive and generous audience to
enjoy the culmination of their day’s work.
The performance of the Faure Requiem will take place in Fakenham
Parish Church at 6.00pm on Saturday 28th February, admission is free
and will last about an hour. There will be programmes, a raffle and
donation buckets, all proceeds to Tapping House. Refreshments will
be on sale at the end of the performance for both audience and choir
to enjoy.

production that will make the hairs
on the back of your neck stand up!
Thelma, who admits to being
over 21, plays the part of a cook
in the late Victorian era, but all is
not well in the usually well run
household.
The Mistress lies dead upstairs.
All the servants are in the kitchen
of the tall, dark house. So who is
ringing the bell from the mistress’s room? Guilty consciences prey
on overwrought minds and greed turns previous friendships sour.
Accusations fly and the air is full of recriminations. One thing unites
them, the knowledge that the bell is being rung. But by whom? It can’t
be the Mistress..... can it?
‘Who Calls’ is one of three short plays being performed by the
Sheringham Players at the Sheringham Little Theatre, under the title
of Ménage a Trois. The other two plays are hilarious comedies that
will make your ribs ache with laughter .... a welcome relief from the
suspense of this creepy Victorian tale. The event runs from Thursday
19th to Saturday 21st March.

It astonishes me constantly how many ways there are with the
humble spud, which is good news for the financially challenged.
This dish starts with potatoes and adds a wealth of colours, nutrients
and flavours, to produce a finished dish that is simply delicious.
Smoked paprika adds a wonderful Spanish influence and a sweet
smoky flavour that perfectly compliments the veg, giving a really
sunny feel - just the boost we need at this time of year! Plus, you
are getting a great range of nutrients with the varied and colourful
vegetables, boosting your immune system against nasty bugs. For
dedicated meat eaters, add in some sliced chorizo to really spice
things up! Most of the supermarkets do specials on bags of peppers
and red onions, and aubergines are still around only 50p at Lidl
and feta cheese again has come down in price, making this dish
affordable and delicious. It really needs no accompaniment, but you
could serve this with any cooked meat, or alongside a roast.
Smoky Roast Potato Bake
New potatoes, or waxy old potatoes, cut into chunks
Selection of peppers, deseeded and cut into quarters
Red onions, skinned and cut into quarters
Aubergine, cut into chunks
Sun dried tomatoes, cut in half
Olive oil
Smoked Paprika
A few bay leaves
Small Tomatoes (on the vine if possible), or larger cut into halves
Feta cheese
I have deliberately not put quantities in this recipe; the only thing to
bear in mind is that you want a good tray of colour and texture, with
less sundried tomatoes and not so many fresh that they overwhelm
everything else.
Put potatoes into boiling water, and boil for about 7 minutes, or until
just getting soft on the outside. Drain, and toss in some olive oil and
about a heaped teaspoon of smoked paprika, (you may need more if
you have a large quantity of veg) then add all the other veg except
the fresh tomatoes and ensure they all have a good coating of oil and
paprika. Put into a deep roasting tray, tucking in the bay leaves, in a
hot oven, about 200° and bake for about 20 minutes, then stir around
a little and add the fresh tomatoes sprinkled with a little more oil, and
replace into the oven until the tomatoes are softened and charring a
little (around another 15 minutes). Serve piping hot, scattered with
crumbled feta cheese and some fresh parsley or oregano leaves and
with rustic bread to soak up any juices.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB
Kelling Probus Club held their February lunch meeting at The
Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham on 19th February. Chairman
Tony O’Shea welcomed 27 members including a special
welcome for new member Tom Henshaw.
The guest speaker was Dianne Evans from The Sheringham
Enhancement Group, who outlined the role of this non-political
group in the furthering of projects in the town. She talked about
the work the group put in to the introduction of the new East
promenade toilets, which may never have been built if they had
not pressurised the authorities in to building them.
She talked about the ‘Y’ Station on Beeston Hill (Bump) and
how an information board the group produced and installed
drew attention to the value of this site during World War II.
She then talked about the other minor jobs the group does to
make sure the town remains attractive. She stressed that the
‘eyesores’ in the town were always top of the groups agenda for
improvement.
She was thanked for a very interesting and informative talk
enjoyed by all members.
The Probus Club meets once a month on the third Thursday of
each month at the Dales Hotel and is open to all retired or semiretired business people.

The Care Cost Cap ~ the idea of the cap is that it specifies the
MAXIMUM amount an individual will have to pay towards their
care costs. Initially, the Dilnot Commission recommended that
this be £35,000. Sadly, the Government has opted for a higher
amount which is expected to be £72,000.

To make the situation more complex, some of the costs you have to
pay when receiving care do not count towards the £72,000 cap.
For example, if you do not want to be in a care home recommended
by the Local Authority (perhaps costing £30,000 a year) but chose
a more favourable home (say costing £40,000) the extra £10,000 a
year is payable by you in addition to the £72,000 cap.

Deferred Payment Scheme ~ Local Authorities will be obliged
to offer this scheme when you require care. In essence, if you own
a home, you will not be force to sell it in order to raise the cash to
pay for your care. Instead, the Local Authority will pay the costs of
care. But this comes with a sting in the tail in that they will charge
interest for the money that they are paying on your behalf. The final
debt that has rolled up will then have to be repaid upon your death,
usually by the house being sold at that time. It’s a form of lifetime
mortgage really and is expected to come into force in April 2015.
So in summary, Care Cost Planning is something that the vast
majority of us will need to face up to. The key is Planning
…… do take action sooner rather than later. Talk to a suitably
qualified Independent Financial Adviser who can work with you
to understand whether Care Costs will affect you and if so, what
options are best suited to you and your family.

BAYFIELD AND LETHERINGSETT IN 1841

In 1841 the noted gardener and nurseryman, James Grigor, published an account of the country houses, gardens, trees and woods he had most
admired during his travels in Norfolk. This work, in the most beautiful prose, describes the landscapes in Norfolk at the beginning of the reign of
Queen Victoria.
One of his favourite spots was Bayfield, which he described as follows ‘From whatever side you approach this spot it is replete with picturesque
beauty. The road from Wiveton Bridge presents to your view
the ruins of Glandford Church, having its steeple mantled with
ivy, while a clear rippling trout stream flows at its foot: as you
draw still nearer the Saxlingham woods give a rich sylvan
effect to the country in the neighbourhood. The entrance from
the Holt road is yet more striking; indeed had we to select a
landscape throughout the whole of the county, we know not one
more graced by tranquil beauty than that which meets your eye
in the village of Letheringsett, as you turn towards Bayfield.
The parish church on your right, quiet and retired, backed,
too, by a deep range of varied woodland scenery; whilst on
the opposite side, the small brushwood thickets so happily
dispersed, and the single trees dotted around: with the Bayfield
(Hall) grounds, and lake, and house, embedded in woods rising
above woods in the distance, fill up to our ideas a scene of
exceeding loveliness.
.... the Saxlingham wood presents so striking a feature
and blends so completely with the whole scene that it
unquestionably forms one of the chief sources of attraction
here. We may fearlessly assert that in point of beauty that
there is no wood to be compared to it throughout the county. It
stands on broken ground, which swells and falls in easy slopes. In many
parts there are numbers of fine old veteran pollards standing single,
with their huge branches feathering to the ground, with fern, thorns,

and brushwood, luxuriantly growing in the intervening spaces. From

THE ROTARY CLUBS OF BROADLANDS AND
HOLT AND DISTRICT
The North Norfolk heat of the Rotary Young Musician of the Year Competition was held
on Sunday 1st February at Gresham’s School (by kind permission of Douglas Robb, Headmaster).
It was sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Broadlands and Holt and District.
Fourteen young musicians provided an afternoon of excellent music enjoyed by an audience of 80.
Four competitors will progress to the District Final on Sunday 1st March in Cambridge.
They are: Instrumental Section: Winner: Sam Aldersey-Williams (piano), Runner-up: Jimmy
Jefford (clarinet). Vocal Section: Winner: Charles Sheppard, Runner-up: Lucian Morrison.
In addition, Daniel Wilson and George Corson (both pianists) were highly commended for their
playing. Unfortunately Jimmy Jefford will not be available for the District Final and George Corson

Initially the classes will be every Tuesday starting on the 3rd March
at 10.00am with Tai Chi, followed by Seated Exercises at 11.00am
and Nordic Walking at 2.00pm.

you will even get a discount if you come to two classes.

BRISTON CRAFT CIRCLE
February’s meeting was most enjoyable with members
working on their own projects.
The new programme was available and includes
projects such as mosaics, branding and tetrahedrons - plenty to look
forward to.
The next meeting is on Monday 9th March and members will be able
to make a padded card.
They will need to bring small sewing scissors and pins, all other
material will be provided.
Meetings start at 7.30pm on the second Monday of each month and
are held at Briston Congregational Centre.
New members are always very welcome.

The successful ‘Get into Golf’ beginner group
coaching sessions return to the Links Golf Club, West
Runton this spring to help more local people to give
golf a try.
Enjoy the health benefits of getting outside and learning something

Golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by everyone whether you are a
junior, senior or anywhere in between. And it doesn’t have to take too
long or cost too much. Golf can fit in with your lifestyle.
The Get into Golf sessions cost only £25 per person and include 6 x
one hour group lessons over a six week period. Golf clubs and balls
are provided.
The last week involves going onto the course to play some holes,
followed by drinks in the clubhouse.
Links Golf Club Professional Dominic Dyer said, ‘Golfers from
previous courses have really enjoyed it and after the course we
provide opportunities for those wishing to continue with golf. Some
have more lessons and many have become members of the club’.
Golf is a very flexible sport. Playing 9 holes need only take 90
minutes and costs just £10. For those who play regularly, membership
offers even better value. You can choose to play 18 holes, but you
could also choose to play 5 holes which would take around an hour.
The clubhouse at the Links is called the Hole-in-One and, like the
golf course, is open to all. It is a great place to meet friends, relax and

HOLT ALLOTMENTS
The Holt D S & S Federation Allotment Association Ltd. has been in
existence since just after the First World War.
It is a large site adjoining Mill Street, Holt with nearly 100 members,
which range from some exceptionally good gardeners to others which
need a gentle nudge to keep on top of things.
It is the time of year one or two members sadly leave for various
reasons, so if you fancy having a go at growing your own, or even
teaching your children where vegetables come from, and how they
grow, then please get in touch with us. It is very rewarding and you
will be surprised at what you can grow with a little investment, time,

BACKGAMMON
The North Norfolk Winter Open, at Gresham Village
Hall, drew 10 players who contested a 4-round Swiss,
matches to 9 points, time limit 1¼ hours per match.
After 2 rounds John Wells (Holt) and Cedric Lytton (Sheringham)
were leading with 2 points, so were paired in Round 3, Cedric
emerging victorious from double match point; Martyn Guest
(Norwich), Colin Sherriff (Langham) and the defending champion
Chris March (Briston)
joined John on 2 points. It
fell to Chris to try to stop
Cedric in the last round, but
again at double match point
Cedric rolled a very lucky
66 to win the bear-off and
the trophy on offer. Martyn
and John tied on 3 apiece,
Martyn winning the runnerup trophy on tie-break, with
Chris collecting fourth prize and
Colin fifth also on tie-break.

BROADLAND CHESS CLUB NEWS
The season continues successfully for Broadland Chess Club.
In the Norfolk League Broadland Bitterns are top of Division 1
on points and Broadland Harnsers are top of Division 2. Broadland’s
two teams in Division 3, the Harriers and the Swallowtails, are both
mid-table.
On 11th February Broadland Cormorants beat King’s Lynn Gold
3½ - ½ in one semi-final of the Williamson Plate and will play Dons
Buccaneers at home in the final on Wednesday 15th April. Broadland’s
team in the other semi-final, the Buzzards, did well to gain 1½ points
against a stronger side from Norwich, the Dons Bucaneers.
Broadland have also reached the Norfolk final of the Norfolk and
Suffolk Cup, in which they will play Norfolk and Norwich at home on
25th February.

BURGLARY
Police are appealing for witnesses following a burglary in
Sheringham which happened between 6.00pm on Wednesday 4th February
and 8.00am on Thursday 5th February at a property on Greenlands Way.
The offender(s) forced entry to the address by breaking the glass in a rear
door, but left without stealing anything.

The link between Blakeney Point and Iraq!
The distinguished local naturalist, Richard Porter, was the guest
speaker at the February meeting of Holt and District Probus Club.
Richard has been reported as saying that one of the reasons he lives
at Cley is to be near Blakeney Point, probably his ‘favourite place in
Britain’. He talked about the Sandwich Terns and the Little Terns - the
Point is an important breeding ground for these, as well as for many
other species. He told of the brown hares which are common on the
Point now, whereas the rabbits have all but gone; and how important it
had become to keep foxes away to protect the terns’ nesting sites.
In stark contrast - Iraq! The Mesopotamian Marshes are a vast
expanse of reeds and open water twice the size of Norfolk, and are the
largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East. They support a number
of species of global conservation concern, for example it supports
the only breeding population of the globally endangered Basra reed
warbler and holds the world’s highest wintering numbers of the
threatened marbled duck.
The charity ‘Nature Iraq’ is doing much to support and nurture the
conservation of wildlife in Iraq, which is recovering somewhat after
the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. Richard has helped by running
training schools for young biologists - which for a time were run in
Syria, but of course that country is now also racked with conflict.

NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT
COUNCIL PROSECUTES BODHAM
MAN FOR FLY-TIPPING
Rodney Drake has, on 18th February, pleaded guilty to
a number of waste offences following an appearance at Norwich
Magistrates Court.
North Norfolk District Council prosecuted Mr Drake following an
investigation by its Environmental Protection Officers after reports
were received from members of the public of a vast quantity of waste,
fly-tipped in a field in Colby. The waste was discovered to have
originated from the clearance of a property in North Walsham which
was undertaken by Mr Drake’s company, ‘Call Rodney’.
Despite the householder paying Mr Drake to legally dispose of the
waste, large quantities of plastics, furniture, textiles, white goods,
electrical items, carpet, glass and crockery were later found dumped.
Mr Drake pleaded guilty to the following waste offences:
(1) transporting waste without being registered as a waste carrier
[Contrary to S1 of the Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989];
(2) knowingly cause controlled waste to be deposited [Section 33 of
the Environmental Protection Act 1990];
(3) failing to comply with Duty of Care to prevent a fly tipping
offense [Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990];
(4) failing to transfer the waste to an authorised person and secure
the transfer of a written description of the waste [Section 34 of the
Environmental Protection Act 1990];
(5) failing to produce a waste transfer notes when required to do so by
the Council [Contrary to Regulation 35 Waste (England and Wales)
Regulations 2011 and Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act
1990].
Mr Drake will be sentenced at Norwich Magistrates Court on
Wednesday 18th March 2015.
North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for the
Environment, Angie-Fitch-Tillett said: “I hope that Mr Drake’s
appearance at court today sends out a strong message that there is
no hiding place for anyone who thinks it is ok to fly-tip. If people
feel they can dispose of their rubbish anywhere they like and
thereby destroy our beautiful area for everyone else, we will seek to
prosecute.”

I love the email exchanges I have with our medical-transcription
trainees from India. They use such beautiful flowery language.
“With God’s grace and you at the helm, I will endeavour to succeed on
the road to perfection,” wrote one man when he sent in his work.
I responded with a thank-you and three pages of corrections, which
elicited another email from him.
“I see the road to perfection is longer than anticipated.”
My father was a GP on a Hebridean island. One day a crofter in his late
eighties came to see him with a mysteriously painful spine.
Dad asked him if he had undertaken any particularly strenuous
activities recently that may have caused the problem.
The old man shook his head for a while, then remembered, “Oh aye, I
suppose it could have been when I had to lift a sack of peat on to the
wife’s back.”

LOCAL LIFEBOAT LUCY LAVERS RETURNS TO DUNKIRK, 75 YEARS ON
Something special is happening this Spring – veteran lifeboat Lucy Lavers is returning to Dunkirk.
Her very first trip as a newly-built lifeboat in May 1940 was helping the evacuation of British and Allied troops stranded in Dunkirk, France.
This Spring will be the first time she’s been back there since ‘Operation Dynamo’. The charity Rescue Wooden Boats is using a Heritage Lottery
Grant to restore Lucy Lavers to her former glory in order to make this commemorative voyage. After years of neglect, by May 2015 she will
look her magnificent best again.
In early May Lucy Lavers will leave Wells-next-the-Sea, calling at
Lowestoft, Aldeburgh, Levington, Harwich, Ramsgate, and finally crossing
the Channel to Dunkirk. The aim is to tell her story in each port and to
encourage people, especially young people, to learn about the Dunkirk
evacuation and maritime history. At each port, visitors can board Lucy
Lavers, experience being on this 1940 lifeboat and feel the enormity of the
events she took part in.
Lucy Lavers’ journey will involve a team of volunteer sailing crews,
onshore coordinators, and a film crew, all working together along her route
to France and back. There will be a programme of linked events onshore,

We’re seeking support, the voyage from Wells-next-the-Sea is 385 nautical miles and will cost £90

voyage. We encourage community participation, volunteers, fundraisers, educational organisations

After her return trip to Dunkirk, Lucy Lavers will live in Wells-next-the-Sea and give educational
