Grades 1-3
Introduction
April 2016 marks the fifteenth annual Morris County Library Children's Poetry Festival; held
each year during National Poetry Month. This year ninety young people, grades 1-7, submitted
verses. Our festivities wrap up with a Poetry Party at which all participants receive certificates
of recognition. This year we thank the Morris County Library Foundation for their generous
donation of four prizes.
Judging the poems were three of our librarians: Joanne Cronin, Mitch Greenberg, and Miriam
Kornblatt. The Festival was overseen by Supervising Librarian Princess Thomas and Elizabeth
DeVincenzo of Children’s Services. The online Poetry Booklet was designed by Graphic Artist
Marylou Sparano. Thanks to them all.
We particularly appreciate the engagement and strong support of teachers at the Normandy
Park and Peck schools.
Congratulations to all our poets. Keep writing!

The Knight
By Christopher Taoran Fu
Second Grade, 2L, The Peck School
The moon is bright
on a summer night,
with a knight whose armor is shinning
white.
His armor is gleaming,
its like you're dreaming.
He has a sword,
that was given to him by his lord.
His sword is sharp and
as big as a harp.
His helmet looks like a mop
with a feather on top.
He has a horse that is grey and
stays still when told to stay.
It eats any kind of prey.
The knight is fading away,
between night and day.
For I hope you see
Morgan Le Fay.
Empathy
Empathy is a nice thing to do.
Make everyone feel good.
Put yourself in other people’s shoes.
Always care for others.
Take care of other people.
Help other people.
You should never be mean.

May, May
May the skies always be blue
May the world always be true
May the plants and flowers be strong and grow
May the hearts in the family flourish and flow
May the people have food to live
May they be generous and want to give
May the fun and sweet games go on
May the laughter and joy ring like a gong
May our lives be true and healthy ones
May our families have light and love us tons
The Spill

I go to the shop.
When I go to the shop,
I see a mop.
When I come home...
I hear something drop!
OH NO!! It’s my soda pop!
I am glad I bought a mop.

A Poem About A Poem
A poem about a poem,
I wonder what that would be?
Would it be describing words,
like sizzling whizbee?
I love writing stories all day and all night.
But when it’s time to edit…Ouch!
Do you have to do that in poetry?
I guess mostly not,
but sometimes you do.
I guess I burst my bubble,
and probably yours too.
And now without further ado…
Is there a poem called Acrostic too?
I think there is a Cinquain,
and free verse ones too.
So many others,
including Haiku.
Now that we’ve covered some of everything.
I guess we will say, “goodbye” to the poetry game.

My Dog
Cleo is a GREAT Dane
Sometimes such a pain
She is tall and big, sit on your lap
Like a pancake she makes you FLAT!
She likes to run
She loves the sun
Her black fur gets really HOT
When she lays in her favorite sunny spot.
I love my dog, she is my friend
This is my poem
This is THE END.

My Room
My new bedroom is super big
I don’t want to keep it like a pig,
It is super comfy, I love my bed
This is where I snuggle, and lay my head,
My Ipad has a lot of games.
I play it in my room on rainy days,
I have some books I like to read
My favorite one you won’t believe!
Terraria books make my day
It is also my favorite video game
I play terraria with my best friend Benny
He is the best player of any!
A sleep over in my room
I can not wait! I hope SOON!

Rays of light splash on my face
Air like a Mid-Summers Day
As I go laugh and jump and play,
All on a Mid-Summers Day.

Sunny days are here.
Pretty flowers everywhere.
Rain, rain, and more rain.
It means trees are getting their buds.
Nights are getting shorter.
Green is coming back!
I Want To Play!
By Matias Stevenson
I want to play
I want to play
All I want to do is play
Daddy? Joaquin? Mommy?
I want to play
Can I see the video of the doggies playing hockey?
I see them swinging a hockey stick and scoring
What are you doing?
Are you ready to play?
Yes! I finally got to play
My Passion for Soccer
By Joaquin Stevenson
I am getting dressed for the game and am anxious.
I arrive at the field and go towards my team feeling positive and energized
The whistle blows and the game begins
I give it my all and sprint towards the ball
I steal the ball and pass to my teammate
He crosses it and we volley it in for a goal
Halftime whistle blows
Feeling tired, our coach tells us how to win the game
The ref starts the game back up
We make quick passes and shoot from a distance.
We score, it is 2 to nothing
When the end whistle blows, we are overjoyed and panting on the way to the bench
I take a deep breath and smell victory
With my head held up high, I think about the next game.
Summer Storm
By Alec Ratterree
I can’t be out
Because the wind is blowing
But the sun is coming out
So the plants start blooming
The heat was warm
And the birds were singing
But suddenly there was a thunderstorm
And the day was ending
SOCCER

Wonderful Spring
By Angela Yuxin Liu
4-21-2016
On the first day of spring,
The flowers were blooming and bees were buzzing.
I looked up on the trees,
And there were birds chirping “Spring, oh lovely spring is here!”
That day was very lovely with flowers blooming and bees buzzing.
Also some wonderful sounds of birds chirping!
On the second day of spring,
I saw some butterflies flying in our garden.
They were looking for some sweet and juicy nectar to drink.
They would start dancing in the air!
The butterflies were almost as merry as going to a ball and dancing romantically
across the floor!
What a wonderland!
Spring is with flowers and bees and tons to see.
I can’t wait till next SPRING!
Patience
By Emma Nagl
I thought I would be taller
In the mountains
A Queen of green and brown
My realm laid out below me
Neat as the green rug Grandma hooked
One St. Patrick’s Day
I thought I would be braver
In the mountains
Following the fierce paths
Of pumas and grizzlies
Ledge leaper
Crag Climber
Taking nothing for granted
Leaving nothing unexplored
I thought I would be wiser
In the mountains
Reading the history of the rocks
In the old, shimmering rocks and stones
Hearing lectures
In the wind and waterfalls
Stretching my mind
Broader than Grandpa’s tall stories
Multiplied by ten.
I thought I would be taller
Braver
Wiser
In the mountains
And I wasn’t
But I am more patient
In the mountains
And I can wait.
Cows
Cows are big and cows are small
Some are short and some are tall
Spots, or stripes, or nothing at all
Cows are big and cows are small

My Sisters
Just Me
By Lolade Aromire
They refer to me as a Princess and I don’t mind
I enjoy making new friends and treating others kind
Placing a smile on faces always feels right
My favorite treats are Waffles and Snickerdoodle little bites
School is spectacular, and I have the greatest time at recess
Playing tag and Miss Mary Mat is always the best
I love to travel, do Art, and dance with Kidz Praise
and what I know for sure, is that I can be the president
one of these days.
…that’s just me.

Silly, silly, around a bee.
Silly, silly, in your water,

Silly, silly, all around!

Bugs, Bugs, Bugs!
By: Salome Nause
Creepy, crawly,
Love so much.
Red and black,
Lady bug.
As red as rubies, so beautiful.
Lady bug with wings,
Like hearts so nice,
So beautiful, I love it so much.
Long and so little,
But very slow,
Emerald green caterpillar,
Slow, slow, slow.
Slowly eating,
And getting bigger every second.
It is going in a tree,
Brown, chrysalis,
The caterpillar slowly turning into a butterfly!
Flap, flap, flap,
Where did it go?
Flappy, fluttery,
Super lovey.
Flap, flap, flap,
Butterfly.
Pollen, sip, sip, sip.
Yellow and black bumblebee,
Sipping too. Loves the pollen too!
Loves honey, love love love.
