flyer pride fall 2013 - Norwalk Catholic Schools
As we begin the new school year, we will be saying goodbye to Fr. Frank Kehres. For the last thirteen
years, Fr. Frank has been committed to Catholic education in Norwalk. His strong leadership and
guidance played a major role in the formation of Norwalk Catholic School seven years ago. Fr. Frank
will leave many legacies as he retires with the formation of Norwalk Catholic School as one of his
most significant. Along with Fr. Frank, Deb Welfle and Ruthann Stocker are also completing their terms
as original governing board members. As Fr. Frank, Deb, and Ruthann depart, we are pleased to
welcome Jenifer Naseman, Pat Schwan, and Msgr. Ken Morman as our new governing board
members. We also will be welcoming Fr. Nathan Bockrath as our new school chaplain. In addition to
the changes in our governing board, we also have a change in our administrative team. After an
exemplary career in both public and Catholic education, Cindy McLaughlin is retiring and transitioning
to her new role as grandmother. Matt Fair, from our advancement office, will be moving to the Early
Childhood Center as its new director.
The class of 2013 exemplified the outstanding achievement levels of our students. We are
featuring our seniors in this edition of Flyer Pride. Approximately 91% of our graduates are continuing
their education at the post-secondary level. They
were offered over $3.4 million in scholarship money
and their ACT scores were well above the state
and national averages.
As I begin my third year as president of Norwalk
Catholic School, I am more convinced than ever
that our students receive a first class Catholic
education. Our test scores are among the highest of
any school in the Toledo Diocese while our tuition
remains among the lowest. I am proud of our school
and I am grateful for your support.
Keep me in your prayers,
Wayne Babcanec, Ph.D.

On the following pages you will see a variety of statistics which show St. Paul High
School students’ accomplishments during the 2012-2013 school year. These graphs and
numbers capture a part of who these young men and women are becoming. I am
proud of the hard work that our staff and students continue to demonstrate.
Our students continue to grow into the people that God intends them to be. The students are engaging in
religious retreats, including the Senior Kairos experience. The students donated over 4,000 hours this school year
to our parishes, local agencies and other individuals. Projects that students undertook this school year raised
over $8,000 for various charities and individuals. Each week our students donated to mission collections, totaling
over $4,000 for the year. This money was used for many local causes including families with ill members or fire
victims, and many national and global causes such as Catholic Relief Service. Each week we celebrated mass
together and Reconciliation was offered during Advent and Lent.
The 2013-2014 school year will be bringing new opportunities for our students. We will start a world language
lab which will enhance and expand our language offerings. Our teachers and students will continue to pursue
new standards in English, math, science and social studies. The junior high / high school building will have
Wi-Fi hotspots available this year. Our teachers and students will discover new opportunities to assist them in
becoming the enthusiastic learners and awesome disciples that God intends each of us to be.
St. Paul … Pray for US!
All Blessings!
Jim Tokarsky, Principal
With my second year at Norwalk Catholic Schools now in the books, the
counseling department is settling in nicely. During the 2012-2013 school year, we were
able to provide a few new opportunities to our families and students. Last September, at
the annual College Kickoff Meeting, seniors and their parents were able to talk directly
with a panel of college admissions officers about the college application process.
Having these college admissions officers on our campus was beneficial as students and parents were able to
receive answers to their questions from the individuals who are responsible for determining which applications
from our region are worthy to make it to the second round of their selection process.
In January, both the junior high and high school students participated in College Awareness Week. Over 60
colleges and universities supported our efforts by providing various products for our students to win through our
College Knowledge Trivia activity. During the College Game Plan Meeting, parents of juniors received a copy of
The College Handbook, a tool developed as a resource to assist in the college application process.
In April, the class of 2015 had the opportunity to visit two college campuses. This was a very beneficial day
where students learned some of the similarities and differences between private and public colleges. Feedback
received from the students indicated the goal of this trip was achieved. This year the class of 2016 will be
exposed to the idea of attending college and what college life is all about.
In the 2013-2014 school year, we will focus on making our students more aware of the career options available
after high school. OCIS (Ohio Career Information System) is a tool offered through the Ohio Department of
Education that will assist us in making our students aware of the occupations available to them. I am excited to
have the opportunity to continue helping our students prepare for their futures.
Mission
At Norwalk Catholic
School our mission is to
develop Disciples of
Christ, promote academic
excellence and foster
a respectful community.
Every student is empowered
to achieve their full potential
personally, morally,
academically, physically,
and spiritually. Students
are encouraged to live a
life of service and fellowship.
School Overview
St. Paul High School was established in 1906 as a two year
commercial school. It became an established four year high school
in 1921. Today, more than 3,000 alumni located around the world
serve their communities professionally and personally. St. Paul High
School is a co-ed Catholic high school located in northern Ohio.
Our student body consists of families from Huron, Erie, Lorain and
Sandusky counties.
Service
Service is an integral part of student life at St. Paul High School
and an extension of the students’ baptismal call to be Christ to
others. In addition, fulfilling this responsibility/requirement directly
exemplifies the mission of Norwalk Catholic School. All students
are required to complete 10 service hours per semester; for a total
of 80 hours by graduation. In addition to the 80 service hours
required, seniors also complete a Senior Project which is meant for
them to showcase the unique gifts the Spirit has given.
Philosophy of Education
NCS Jr. High and St. Paul High are founded on the Christian
tradition that education is the development of the total person. An
educated person must have a respect for self, a love of fellow man,
a commitment to social responsibilities, and an appreciation of truth
and learning. A Christian education must help a person learn to be
a Christian by conviction, not by mere conformity.
NCS Jr. High and St. Paul High aim to provide an integrated
program to enable young people to live their lives to the fullest
and grow toward Christian adulthood. The school tries to develop a
positive self-image and an inquisitive mind, alive and responsive to
the daily discovery of new knowledge; strives to aid students
in establishing a hierarchy of values that will help them live
as responsible adults in an ever-changing society; endeavors to
prepare them to transform the world into the Kingdom of God.
Curriculum
St. Paul High School’s curriculum is academically challenging and provides solid college
preparation. Students are constantly encouraged to challenge themselves in order to develop their
God-given potential. Teachers are committed to supporting students as they achieve more than they
thought possible. The academic calendar is organized in four, nine (9) week periods.
„ All students must be enrolled in a minimum of seven (7) classes per semester.
„ AP courses in US Government, English Literature and Composition are available to juniors and
seniors.
„ Juniors and seniors may enroll in college courses through Owens Community College
„ Students may participate in the DOLI (Diocesan Online Learning Initiatives) program. This program
allows our students a wider selection of course offerings, particularly advanced courses.

The end of a school year brings the quiet office days when you can spend
some time reviewing the data from the completed year’s work. The data comes
from standardized tests, attendance reports, individual report cards or tests
and academic/discipline violations. This information guides us in planning
for the year ahead: making changes, if needed, to academic or behavior
management programs. The 2012-2013 school year has been a busy and
productive year!

Our standardized test scores from the fifth grade TERRA NOVA
ASSESSMENT indicate that we are in the top 15% in the nation in both math
and reading, once again. These scores qualify us for the Blue Ribbon School
application. There are over 800 schools each year that apply for this
honor with only 50 chosen to receive this national award. I hope to be one
of those 50. Whatever the outcome, I am very proud of our school and our
accomplishments.

Students in our 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades take a nationally standardized
reading assessment called the AIMS WEB. This tool charts a student’s reading
progress in fluency and comprehension through the school year. They take
the test once at the beginning of the year, once mid-year and again at the
end of the year. It is interesting to see how we compare, as an entire
school, to other student averages across the nation. The comprehension
scores are extremely high, with all NCS 3rd grade students scoring
significantly higher than the national average. These 3rd grade scores are
a culmination of work done from preschool through 3rd grade.
It is a great job to work in a school where test scores are high and
more importantly, where the students demonstrate respect for their peers
and the adults who serve them. 68% of our students attended a special
breakfast rewarding those who did not receive an academic or discipline
violation. Beyond that, the entire student population participated in service
projects to benefit their local
and
global communities.
Money, pajamas, canned food,
valentines and coats were just
some of the items gathered to
give to those in need this
school year. Service to others is
a service to God. Our students
understand this important
concept.
The planning for the next year
will include maintaining the
successful program we are
currently offering, as well as
researching latest educational
strategies to enhance that
program.
FAITH
All NCS elementary students took part in retreats, daily religion class, weekly Mass, prayer services, and morning
prayer. First and second grade students participated in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium
program. It is our hope to extend this program to include more lessons and additional grade levels next year.
ACADEMICS
Standardized test scores rank us nationally in the top 15%. Project
learning engages our students in authentic practice of
concepts learned in class. One of our themes this year was
INVENTIONS. Students designed and built their own invention.
Students practiced the physics of motion and energy during our
Science Festival with the Imagination Station from Toledo. Thank you,
PTO for help with volunteers and funding!
SERVICE
“WE LIVE TO SERVE” is more than just a cheer. Students served each other,
the Norwalk community, and our global society through acts of charity,
fundraising, and kindness. From pajamas, coats, cash, canned food,
valentines, letters to veterans, prayers and songs …our students
demonstrated their care for others.
The last school year brought an increase in students in all Early Childhood Center preschool classes.
Our ability to deliver quality sets us apart from other preschool programs in the area. The children’s
academic performances have been enhanced with the addition of more pre-literacy activities in the
preschool classes. The teachers have done a tremendous job preparing the 3 year old preschool children for school success. The work they do in helping the children learn the pre-academic work as well
as how to behave in a school situation is invaluable to our program. With their help, the foundation is set
so the 4/5 year old preschool children are ready for a more rigorous curriculum set forth by the Ohio
Department of Education. This allows our 4 year old teachers to “hit the ground running” as they
continue a program of excellence. Many of the 4/5 year old students were able to read several sight
words at the end of their preschool year; this ability is something that would be typical of kindergarten
students, not preschool.
This success followed the students into kindergarten where their reading skills were enhanced. The
Kindergarten Readiness Assessment for Literacy (KRA-L) scores were outstanding and showed that our
preschool students were well prepared for kindergarten. Throughout the school year, the kindergarten
students were assessed using the AIMS Web literacy testing program. This series allowed the teachers to
identify and implement the proper instruction for each individual student. This enabled us to deliver a
more personalized course for each child.
In addition, there was expansion in the Flyer Clubhouse – the Norwalk Catholic School child care
program. The growth in the Clubhouse caused us to increase our school staff when we added two new
positions in the Flyer Clubhouse. NCS has been an innovator in helping working parents in our school
community by caring for their children. We have been able to keep the Clubhouse prices reasonable
while continuing to provide quality care with educated and caring staff members.
We cannot forget the reason for our school – the religious formation of the children in their faith lives.
We were able to continue with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program for all the students. The
curriculum was expanded to include more presentations as more materials were developed. This
program will continue into the future as the children have shown us just how important time with Jesus
is in their young lives.
As we look forward to the 2013-14 school year we see change on the horizon. I am very happy to
introduce Mr. Matt Fair as the new director of the Early Childhood Center. He is enthusiastic about the
future growth of the program including the ability to participate in the State of Ohio’s Early Learning star
rating system. There are many changes ahead for the world of Early Learning and School Readiness in
Ohio and Mr. Fair will be working hard to keep NCS on the cutting edge of preschool learning in our
community. I cannot wait to see all that can be accomplished with fresh ideas and a new beginning
for the Early Childhood Center.

The Norwalk Catholic School Governing Board is also
experiencing much change this summer! Leaving the board are
charter members Fr. Kehres, Deb Welfle and Ruth Ann Stocker. All 3
of these individuals were instrumental in the design and formation of
Norwalk Catholic School 8 years ago when the steering team was
first formed. New members embracing a 3-year term are Pat Schwan,
Jenifer Naseman and Monsignor Ken Morman. Please continue to
pray for our board members, school leadership, students and their
families. As planned change continues within our board, it allows
us a fresh start each year with new ideas and perspectives for the
continued growth of Catholic education. We have been blessed
with board members who have open minds and innovative
ideas and who are not afraid to make the tough decisions that are
sometimes required.

I am grateful and excited to be back at St. Paul
High and Norwalk Catholic School. It is truly a
blessing to be working with a great group of people
in the school, with parents and with current and future alumni.
I am grateful that my husband and I grew up with a Catholic education. I
am a 2000 St. Paul High School graduate and my husband is a 1998 alum.
This fall, our daughter, Molly, will be in 3rd grade and our son, Seth, will be in 1st
grade here at Norwalk Catholic School.
My goal in the upcoming year is to get acquainted with all our NCS family.
I would like to utilize the available technology to find the best way to stay in
contact with all constituencies. Most of all I want to communicate with you –
our students, parents, parishioners, alumni and friends. I want to let you know
about our successes, what we are doing, and get feedback from you.
Please keep our office updated on any changes to your status (marriage,
name, address, email, phone, etc). If you do not currently receive NCS
mailings (FlyerPride, MustardSeed), we have incorrect information.
Upcoming events include 2 tailgate parties, Catholic Schools Week, Hall
of Fame, and the Alumni Gathering. We hope to schedule more activities
throughout the year and we want to see you there!
I look forward to getting to know you!

for the Future, over $7.5 million has been raised. You have helped us accomplish these goals:
· Attract strong, talented teachers and build a solid curriculum.
· Keep tuition affordable.
· Maintain a beautiful campus and expand technology.
· Sponsor students who could not have attended school here without your help.
Thank you to our faithful donors, many who have been Friends for the Future supporters for all or most
of these 20 years. We exist and thrive because of the commitment of so many good people. Our
Donors’ List represents the commitment and sacrifice that our community makes to provide excellent

I am pleased to report that Norwalk Catholic School ended the 2012-2013 school
year in good financial standing. While revenue for the 2012-2013 school year was slightly
below expectations, total expenditures were also below the budgeted amount
allowing us to end the year essentially at a break even position. Thanks to your continued investment and
dedication, we had a successful financial year while providing a quality Catholic education. A wonderful
accomplishment!
This past year we were able to…
· Expand on campus security improvements.
· Strengthen the computer network backbone to support future
technology needs.
· Fund $10,000 in handheld tablet purchases for use by teachers at the
Elementary and Early Childhood campuses – Thank You PTO!!
· Purchase tablets for a few teachers in the high school.
· Repave & reline the Convocation Center parking lot - thank you AJ
Riley, Inc & Ogelsby Construction. Your generosity is a blessing!
· Replace the roof on the Monroe St. Gym.
As we continue to implement our overall technology plan and campus
improvement plan, we are…
· Installing data access points in all campus buildings to support wireless
internet access primarily for handheld devices - important as we
develop additional technology based curriculum.
· Continuing the facelift of the Frederick Building (Maintenance
Building) – Thank you to volunteers Jim Wasiniak and crew.
· Addressing additional security needs on all campuses.
The budget for 2013-2014 was developed assuming a relatively stable
enrollment and a 2% salary increase for teachers and staff. A modest
tuition adjustment was made in order to support the wage increase as
well as the day to day NCS operations.
Thank you for your continued support of Norwalk Catholic School. What
we accomplish together is amazing. We are blessed by your generosity
and commitment!

St. Paul exists because of the community that surrounds it. Flyer Alumni are an important part of that
community. When any Flyer accomplishes something great, everyone in our school community benefits.
We have news from around the country and sometimes from around the world. This version of Peeking at
the Paulites is just a small sample of what is going on. Fellow alumni want to share in your success and good
news. You can either mail information to Alumni Director Jenny Ridge (the address is listed at the end of this
section) or you can email her at [email protected]. Please send us your news!

FCEDO/Norwalk Catholic School as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan. There are
many ways to give through life insurance and retirement plans, some of which may have benefits to
donors. Please consult your financial advisor.
Bequest in your will — Give a fixed amount or item (or property). Some donors prefer to designate a
percentage of their estate or donate the residual amount left in the estate after all other bequests are
granted.
Personal property — Personal property such as automobiles, works of art, antiques, coin or stamp
collections, jewelry and other items also may be given to the school.
Life income plans — Life income plans such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder
trusts may be set up. Donors receive a charitable deduction when the gift is made and income
throughout their lifetimes. The remainder goes to FCEDO/Norwalk Catholic School upon the death of
the donor.
